President’s Message

Friends and Members, 2011 was a very good year for the Metropolitan YMCA, but I will quote Charles Dickens in ‘A Tale of Two Cities’:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times;it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity,it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…

It is said that change comes in waves. The Metropolitan YMCA was set up at the start of the “baby boomer” years. We saw succeeding generations join as members, support us as donors and volunteers, grow as staff or serve with the Board – to fulfill the vision of extending God’s love and domain through service.

As we celebrated our 65th Anniversary last year, we made a commitment to renew and rejuvenate. For baby boomers like myself, the fast-changing environment is challenging. The Millennials, or Generation Y’ers, are now a significant part of workforce. They are characterised as being “very global, civic minded, entrepreneurial”. They live online in a hyper-connected world. They seek to express their creativity, and want to be part of the solution.

So we see the building up of a strong, enthusiastic and younger team, especially with COO Grace Chan, in the management of our hospitality and building services, and through programmes. One of our core services, providing a safe and nurturing environment for young children, is being completely refreshed and rebranded as MY World. Interactive classroom technology is introduced, and children take to tech like fish to water. Young parents blog about their children’s development, and post pictures of the new environment on Facebook. Young qualilfied educators are excited about the cool changes in our child care services, and say, “Count me in!”

The aesthetics, methodology and programme ideas may change, but some things at the core will continue to anchor the work of the Metropolitan YMCA. The YMCA worldwide has huge potential for touching lives. Indeed many heartwarming stories have emerged over the decades about those whose lives have been saved, put back together, supported and transformed. We are called to serve through the love of Christ, and we will continue to invite big-hearted people to join us in this awesome work.

I want to thank all donors, and the volunteers who have given freely of themselves in our community service, especially– young people who mentor primary school children in their studies and character building through MY MP3;– youths who help to clean up scores of flats for the needy through MY Big Sweep;– the individuals who pack and distribute provisions through MY Manna;– those who help recycle and generate funds for community service in MY Green Shop; and many more who help out in myriad ways.

I would like to commend the staff and management team led by CEO Phyllis Tan for their skill, commitment and passion for excellence.

Finally I would like to thank my fellow officers and Board Directors for their voluntary contribution and unstinting support. We remember the late Dr Michael Kwok who has served on the board with the highest integrity and amazing generosity. I thank God for our President Emeritus Rev Lim Kay Kok who has mentored and encouraged countless young staff and directors.

We are poised for another leap forward. The Metropolitan YMCA will continue to develop and empower young leaders at every level. In this season of change, may God continue to bless the work of our hands and multiply the fruit of our labour!

CEO’s Message

Metropolitan YMCA commemorated 65 years ‘In the People Business’ with a thanksgiving dinner on 10 April, the date on which Dr Chen Su Lan convened the first pro-tem committee of the Chinese YMCA in 1946. Board members together with some 270 staff and friends recalled our heritage and renewed our commitment to serve.

Mr Ho Kok Choy retired after 50 years of faithful service. He had joined the Chinese YMCA in Palmer Road as a young man of 20, and had worked under Founder President Dr Chen Su Lan as well as seven successive Executive Directors / CEOs.

We bade farewell to Dr Michael Kwok, who went home to the Lord at age 92 on 30 July 2011. Dr Kwok had served on the Board of Directors for a combined period of 41 years since 1966, and was President from 1990 to 1994. He will be remembered for his kind generosity and unfailing support for the work of the Metropolitan YMCA.

With the need to strengthen the leadership team, we are glad to welcome back Ms Grace Chan as Chief Operating Officer. Ms Chan was a key executive for 11 years, and had left in 2004 for further studies and an overseas hotel posting. Other key additions to management included Ms Dorcas Yu for building services and Ms Shirley Wong for HR.

Child Care services will undergo a progressive makeover in tandem with cyclical maintenance. This includes rolling out a process to rebrand the service from Metro-Y Child Care to MY World, and extensive renovations to facilities. Two centres (Stevens and Tampines Central) were refurbished as pilot projects in late 2011, and feedback received from parents, teachers and children have been enthusiastic.

We thank God for a healthy surplus achieved through our social enterprise services in hospitality and child care. Together with members’ and public support through donations and volunteer efforts, we hope to expand our service through community and youth outreach renamed as Active Community Transformation Services (ACTS).

We had the privilege to host YMCA friends from the Six YMCAs Conference and the APAY Leaders’ Quadrennial Roundtable. The YMCA around the world is heeding the call to empower youth and be responsible as global citizens.

It is the Lord who “builds the house”. The demands of a changing world today call for very different skill sets and responses. We pray that the Metropolitan YMCA will continue to be true to our Christian mission in serving the community as well as building up the generation of youth today. In our on-going effort and service I would like to thank the President and Board of Directors for their leadership and encouragement. I would also like to thank “ Uncle Lim”, our President Emeritus, whose counsel is highly regarded.

We will press on in service to the community, and look forward to the continued support of our volunteers, donors and friends.

Phyllis Tan

Celebrating our 65th Anniversary

2011 marked yet another milestone for the Metropolitan

YMCA as we celebrated our 65th Anniversary. Based on the

theme, “In the People Business” and revolving around the

Association’s goals to “Renew and Rejuvenate”, 270 staff and

overseas guests from Chinese YMCA Hong Kong, Honolulu

YMCA, Seoul YMCA, Osaka YMCA and Taipei YMCA flew

in from across the Asia Pacific Region to commemorate this

special day.

A dinner was held on 10 April 2011 at the YWCA Fort Canning Lodge where we gave thanks for the past 65 good years and showed our appreciation for the long service staff and board members acknowledging their contribution towards the Association’s growth.

Did you know? That we were first known as the Chinese YMCA and was founded by Dr Chen Su Lan in 1946. A physician by training, he was also an anti-opium fighter and social reformer.

Did you know? That we’ve had three headquarters since we were first founded in 1946. Starting at Selegie Road, we moved on to our second home on Palmer Road which was “the biggest YMCA building in Malaya” before we finally moved to our current premise on Stevens Road today.

Our First Steps towards Renewal…

Metro-Y child care took our first step towards Renewal and Rejuvenation and underwent a progressive makeover together with the cyclical maintenance. The newly rebranded child care will now be called “MY World” and a whole new world will unfold in the upcoming year ahead.

At the same time, our programmes department underwent a revamp of their image and launched a series of new logos for their core programmes and camps.

One of the Association’s main mission is to nurture and develop young ones, guiding them on the right path. Over the years, the Association has steadily increased its number of child care branches across the island and now has 12 Child Care Branches and 1 Student Care spread all over Singapore which serves the community daily.

In order to keep abreast with the learning environment, Metro-Y Child Care took a big step forward to launch our newly re-branded child care, “MY World”. Together with our teaching methods based on core values, coupled with state-of-the-art technology inculcated, the newly re-branded child care hopes to create a world where children can be developed to their fullest potential. We also recognise the need for holistic development based on our mission, “To Grow in Body, Mind and Spirit” and believe in creating such opportunities for our students by providing them with special enhancement programmes such as Swimming, Music and Gymnastics. In addition, they are also constantly involved in various activities throughout the year such as outdoor sports as well as speech and drama.

Thanks to the leadership of our Principals and consistent effort of our Educators, Carers and ‘aunties’ who assist with the cooking and cleaning, all centres secured the maximum 24-month license and achieved an enrolment of 88%, higher than the national average of 86.5%.

Learning Together…

We also recognise that our Educators and Carers are equally important as our children for they are the first point of contact with vulnerable young minds. Hence, we believe in steering them on the right course and providing them with platforms to exchange ideas and workshops to further enhance their professionalism.

One such workshop was “How Teachers Can Support Children’s Holistic Development”. Held on 25th March 2011, it was attended by 120 of our child care teachers and participants.

Multiple training sessions are also conducted yearly to ensure the skills of our teachers and to allow senior educators to mentor and guide new teachers in planning holistic activities for the children.

Playing Together…

It’s not all work and no play at MY World! With a mission centred on holistic development in body, mind and spirit, the Metro-Y encourages healthy living from young to old and believes in strengthening family bonds through various activities such as our Combined Sports Meet. Each year, our child care students together with our MY First Club members will come together for a Combined Sports Meet on 18 March 2011 where parents, child care children and alumni of MY World gather for a day of fun sports activities where they get to pit their hand-eye co-ordination skills against one another. The event ended with a lunch at Sembawang Park where all had the opportunity to catch-up and relate past stories of their time as students of our child care.

Among the many other family bonding events held throughout the year was the Family Fiesta/Open House held on 2 April at our Tampines Changkat Branch. It was a splendid opportunity to showcase our services and contribution to the community. We were extremely pleased to have Ms Irene Ng (MP for Tampines GRC) visit the branch as our Guest-of-Honour and interact with both our parents and children. Families were treated to a drawing contest, balloon sculpting lessons, jumble sales, henna hand painting and a performance by the children amongst the many other games. It was an enjoyable afternoon indeed for all!

Celebrating Together…

To commemorate the hard work of our child care students, we held our annual K2 Combined Graduation Ceremony on 12 October 2011. This marked the end of a very important chapter in the lives of our child care students as they moved on to yet another important phase, entering primary school.

At the graduation ceremony, we also took the opportunity to present the MY First Club Book Prizes to 12 of our outstanding alumni members. Dr. Alice Seng, Associate Professor (NIE) and Chairman of Metro-Y Child Care Committee kindly graced the joyful occasion with her presence and gladly handed out book prizes which were based on an individual’s outstanding achievement in academics, sports, music, arts and character development.

Revolving around the theme of “Let’s Celebrate”, the event ended with a colourful kaleidoscope of dance and music performed by our children from each of the 12 branches.

Metro-Y not only celebrated the graduation of their child care students but also for their five outstanding Principals who successfully completed their degree courses and were conferred the “Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Early Childhood Education”.

Did you know? Our 12 Child Care Centres nurtured close to 1,000 childrenin 2011.

Throughout the year, the Association constantly seeks new and innovative ways to engage our members whether it is through our wide array or programmes, workshops, talks or trips.

Both our Aquatic Education Programme and Ballet Programme took a huge leap forward as they held their 5th Cross Culture Swim Meet and Ballet Concert titled, “One Day…”.

The Sports & Recreation Division brought about numerous changes and achieved even greater heights by anchoring the Metro-Y Basketball Club, the Metro-Y Swim Club and the Metro-Y Soccer Club.

Aquatic Education Programme

The Aquatic Team reviews their curriculum annually and is always on the lookout for areas of improvement. In 2011, the SwimSafer certification programme was incorporated into the revised Aquatic Education Programme. SwimSafer was officially launched by the National Water Safety Council (NWSC) in collaboration with the Singapore Sports Council in October 2010 with the aim of equipping children with the necessary water safety knowledge, wider range of personal survival skills and basic rescue skills to safeguard against drowning.

In addition, the Metro-Y AEP also introduced a new “Swimming Skills Proficiency and Performance Progress Book” for teachers to officially record each student’s progress and performance. With this in place, aquatic teachers can now work better with parents to further improve the skills of each participant.

An Extract from a Parent’s Letter of Appreciation:

“… I am delighted to discover a revamped Metro-Y! …I see new teaching and assessment methods and overall a richer program. I see the profound effect on my daughter – she is motivated, enjoys her lessons dearly and has a great rapport with her teacher… I know I can now count on Metro-Y and no longer need to shop around for good swimming schools…”

Metro-Y Swim Club

The Metro-Y Swim Club has grown significantly throughout the year with both the Pre-Squad and Competitive Squad continuously training to develop strength, stamina and endurance. Elite Swimmers were also given the opportunity to participate in swim meets over the year.

Page 17: MYMCA Annual Report 2011

MYMCA ANNUAL REPORT 2011 • 15

One of our Swim Club members, Ms Moe Yonezawa, 10-yrs-old went on to challenge herself in a Triathlon organised by Milo and the Ministry of Education (MOE) on 5 March 2011. Well done, Moe!

The Metro-Y Swim Club also emerged victorious in two other friendly matches with St. Joseph’s Institute International on 20 April 2011 and again at yet another friendly match with Chatsworth International School on 12 October 2011, despite being outnumbered with only 18 Metro-Y Swim Club Members against 30 swimmers from Chatsworth International School!

5th Cross Culture Swim Meet

Another annual event that took place was the 5th Cross Culture Swim Meet whereby swimmers from different nationalities of diverse cultures came together for an afternoon of friendly matches. Held on 29 October 2011, the event attracted over 50 participants from Korea, Japan, Singapore and other countries around the region. Greatly supported by parents of the Metro-Y Swim Club, the successful event ended with local delicacies prepared by them, displaying the true spirit of a cross culture meet!

Metro-Y Basketball Club

The Metro-Y Basketball Club was also actively involved in friendly matches last year. Playing against the Excelsior International School on 16 March 2011, the opposing team was caught off guard by the swift moves displayed by our girls’ team (16-yrs-old and under) who won with a score of 36 against 12.

It was another celebration when the boy’s team (16-yrs-old and under) clinched the title of overall champion in the 3-on-3 basketball match hosted by Fastbreak Basketball Club on 29 May 2011.

Did you know?Basketball was a YMCA invention by a physical education instructor, James Naismith in 1891.

Metro-Y Ballet

Based on the theme of a child’s ambitions, we held our biennial ballet concert entitled, “One Day…” to trace the dreams and aspiration of every child and allowing adults to revisit their childhood dreams at the same time.

Held over two days from 9 – 10 September 2011 at Lasalle College of the Arts, the concert was a showcase of the immense training and long hours of dedication by both teachers and students as our little performers entertained the audience with delicate and graceful ballet movements. Dance items ranged from dancing doctors, firemen, artists, chefs and musicians to hip-hop and jazz, leaving the audience mesmerized long after the concert ended.

Metro-Y Holiday Camps

Every June and December holidays are when little campers participate in our array of Adventure and Enrichment Camps! Last year, over 100 little campers in each season experienced the Metro-Y Camp which was not just based on skills imparted but also cultivating sound values. Signature camps which were back by “popular demand” included the “Commanders Camp” and the “Adventure at Heart Camp”. New camps/workshops such as snorkelling were also introduced and were well-received.

Membership

Membership at the Metro-Y has always been more than just organising activities for members. Rather it has been a platform for service and fellowship geared towards our outreach and volunteerism.

We hope that members can actively participate in our various outreach efforts aside from membership activities and see themselves as a part of the Association too. Members can become active volunteers through our community outreach initiatives and regular volunteers are offered complimentary associate membership.

Members are kept updated through e-blasts throughout the year on upcoming membership programmes, day tours, workshops on topics of interests and health talks, attracting a good mix of both teens and adults.

Did you know? Today, we have over 2,202 children, youth and adults enrolled in our various programmes such as child care, swimming, ballet, outdoor adventure and camp programmes each month.

Engaging our Members

In 2011, the membership division organised a series of activities for a younger and more vibrant crowd. These activities included a day tour to Kukup, a make-up workshop, a teddy bear making workshop, a health talk on common skin problems and basic balloon sculpting were the most popular ones amongst the many others organised.

Members in Fellowship

The Metro-Y also hosted a lunch fellowship on 17 November 2011 which generated 134 attendees during the World Week of Prayer and Fellowship held from 14 – 18 November 2011 organised by the three Ys. The theme for this year was “Young People: A Voice to Influence, A Generation to Treasure”.

In addition, members had the opportunity to attend classes by Precept Ministries from January to October and a special Ukulele class led by Reverend Tony Tan from Revival Centre Church.

Regular fellowships were also held throughout the year on a weekly and monthly basis in both English and Mandarin gathering members and staff for a time of sharing.

Our Members Reach Out

Held on 1 February 2011, the enthusiastic staff and members of Metro-Y volunteered in “Gifts from the Heart” or more fondly known as “Chicken Run” whereby volunteers delivered piping hot roast chickens and other new year goodies to 68 needy families.

Members and staff also actively volunteered at our “MY Christmas Blessings” on 3 December 2011. Known as Flag Day conventionally, the event garnered volunteers from Beta Y’s men, child care parents and foreign student volunteers from Shelton College. It was a most heart-warming sight as our volunteers combed the streets together to raise almost $70,000 including the pledge cards distributed earlier.

The Metro-Y has always been blessed to receive the much needed assistance of volunteers from all around. In 2011, we managed to mobilise 310 volunteers each month to serve in our various outreach programmes:

MY MP3, Empowering through MentoringThe MY MP3 is a mentoring programme for under-achieving primary school students. Mentors would spend time at different schools and provide guidance in school work to these students. Volunteers in turn learn to communicate with children and be a good role model.

MY Toy Library & Mobile Toy Library, Let’s Play! This was a programme initiated by a group of Japanese housewives in which they sew hand-made toys and organise regular visits to special schools and pediatric rehabilitation centres.

MY Big Sweep, Clean & Paint with LoveThis programme engages volunteers to help clean up and repaint the homes of the destitute elderly and our beneficiaries. Volunteers learn to cherish their surroundings and home environment as they witness the conditions of which some of our beneficiaries live in.

MY Manna, Provision with a MissionThis programme provides daily food essentials to approximately 100 families/households. Beneficiaries either come down to collect the provisions or in cases where they are unable to self collect, volunteers will deliver it to their door step.

MY Green Shop, Give/Buy, Onsite/OnlineThis programme allows you to recycle. Unused items which are still in good condition are donated to the Green Shop. After which, volunteers will come in to clean, categorize, arrange and sell these donated items to raise funds for our outreach programmes. Volunteers experience a change in themselves as they learn to be more frugal in the process.

During the past year, the Metro-Y collaborated with 22 schools, corporations and NPOs for our outreach programmes and fund raising activities. We also activated 410 ad hoc volunteers comprising of staff, child care parents and children, youths, foreign students, Beta Y’s Men Club and friends from all around.

We were also extremely pleased and thankful for the partnership with Jean Yip Salon Pte Ltd to provide free haircut services to the elderly.

Youth Volunteers and Us

As part of many schools’ Community Involvement Programme (CIP) and Service Learning (SL) requirements, students are constantly at our doorstep seeking meaningful avenues to serve the community. They start with different outlooks.

Despite the mixed beginnings, one thing happens without fail. At the end of each project, a transformation takes place. It happens because at some point, the youths chose to make the most out of their CIP/SL projects. It happens because the youths become open to the challenges, and something about serving others who are less fortunate touches them deep in their spirit.

The beneficiaries whose lives they have touched and helped experience a change, but in so many ways, those who gave found themselves more blessed than those who received.

Here at Metro-Y, we believe that volunteerism is not a one-off encounter but a life long service to our community which is why we often extend our volunteering efforts both ways. To reach out to the community and at the same time develop our volunteers through workshops, camps and events.

One such event was the “World Play Day” cum “Family Day” held on 28 May 2011 which was initiated, planned and conducted by our youths to showcase their considerable skills and multifaceted talents!

What our Youths say…

“I remember the last session best because it screamed of success. Success not because I’d went through the entire journey. Success wasn’t shown on a piece of paper for me. No, success came for me on their faces. A smile. I find that was all the reward I really needed for my experience. A smile!

Media Coverage

We would like to thank the media for support and coverage of various activities, including an outreach effort called “MY Big Sweep” in which chairman of community outreach Dr Samuel Yeak and CEO Phyllis Tan joined a group of RI students to clean the bug-infested home of a beneficiary on 23 July 2011.

Lianhe Wanbao also featured the Metro-Y Lunch Health Talk on 12 August 2011.

Reflections from a volunteer on MY Big Sweepon 23 July 2011:

“Personally, this was the first clean-up for MY Big Sweep that I participated in, as well as other fellow students, thus, this experience was an eye-opener and gave us an opportunity to help the community directly in a meaningful way.

Together with a NTUC eldercare volunteer and 2 RJC Ensemble club members, we made our way to the house and commenced cleaning. It took us more than 2 hours to clean the two bedrooms, storage room, kitchen, living room and two toilets as the floors caked with black dirt and the entire house also required much packing aside from cleaning.

After 2 hours, the house was in much better condition, the rooms, sinks and toilets were rid of black dirt and the things in the kitchen (sink etc.). It was symbolic for me as I mopped the last of the living room and finished the final act of cleaning the house.

A clean floor after a half an hour’s work was a welcomed sight, and spurred the group on to continue the cleaning process with a renewed effort and spirit, all working towards a common goal as we walked away from the unit with a tangible sense of achievement in the air. It reminded us of why we signed up for the activity in the first place – to directly impact the community by providing aid to people, cleaning one house at a time.”

Building bonds with other YMCAs around the region has always been a long term goal of every YMCA. After all, the YMCA is known to be a world wide movement. Throughout the year, the Asia & Pacific Alliance of YMCAs will meet at exchange programmes, workshops, conferences and events to strengthen our international bonds through cross-cultural interactions.

It is through these bonds forged that we are now able to have a Korean Section and Japanese Section led by native staff of Seoul YMCA and Kyoto YMCA. Sports programmes and camps are conducted in both Korean and Japanese to serve both the increasing Korean and Japanese community in Singapore. This also opened an avenue for us to participate in the “Kids’ World Cup 2011” held in Korea.

Did you know? Our Japanese Section first started in 1980, and made a welcome difference to families integrating into Singapore lifestyle and culture.

Celebrating YMCA AnniversariesWe would like to extend our deepest congratulations to the following YMCAs:

• Sibu YMCA for celebrating their 40th Anniversary in 2011• Wuhan YMCA for celebrating their 100th Anniversary in 2011• Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong for celebrating their 110th Anniversary in 2011

We also like to thank the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong for inviting our board member, Dr. Robbie Goh to deliver a paper at the symposium on YMCA work among Chinese Communities in Asia.

Network & Training With our extensive international network and worldwide family in over 130 countries, YMCAs around the world meet regularly to review our mission, discuss business matters and create networking opportunities for both staff and volunteers.

17th Six YMCAs ConferenceThe Metro-Y hosted the 17th Six YMCAs Conference from 7 – 11 April 2011. The theme of the conference was “Youths and the use of Social Media for Causes” whereby the participating YMCAs (Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, Honolulu, Hong Kong Chinese YMCA & Metropolitan YMCA Singapore) did a report and presentation on the above topic. The conference took on a more casual style of discussion and adopted the “World Café” set-up.

Hospitality with a Heart…

The YMCA in many parts of the world is known for providing hospitality at great value for a cause: giving tired travellers a “home away from home” – a safe, clean and friendly place to rest, and hearty meals in a cosy environment. The revenue generated goes towards sustaining our community outreach effort and organisation development.

Located along Stevens Road in serene surroundings amidst lush greenery, the Metropolitan Y (Hostel) has 92 fully furnished guest rooms. With close proximity to the Orchard shopping district, the Hostel and Serviced Apartments provide affordable accommodation that offers the best option for travellers. Long-term guests and families needing the extra space can opt for one of the 27 Metro-Y Apartment suites that come with kitchen, dining and laundry facilities.
