METRO GRR RAPHICS

E veryone forgets things from time to time. Periodically forgetting where you left

your keys is likely not indicative of a bad memory. But some people find

themselves forgetting things more frequently, a troubling development for

those who can't explain their sudden

loss of memory.Memory loss is often considered to

go hand-in-hand with aging. As a person ages, conventional wisdom sug-

gests memory will begin to fade. But

sometimes memory loss has nothing

to do with aging, and a lot to do with

a brain that isn't sharp because of an

unhealthy lifestyle. The following are a

few ways men and women can improve

their memory.Get some sleep. Men and women

who aren't getting enough sleep can al-

most certainly blame that lack of shut-

eye for at least some of their memory

loss. When you don't get enough sleep,

your brain's ability to think critically,

solve problems and even be creative is compromised considerably. In addi-

tion, research has shown that memory-

enhancing activities occur during the deepest stages of sleep, further

highlighting the importance of getting

a full night of interruption-free rest.Hit the gym. Exercise is another

activity that can improve memory. Daily physical exercise increases the

amount of oxygen that gets to your brain while reducing the risk for cer-rr

tain disorders, including diabetes and

cardiovascular disease, both of which

can lead to memory loss.

Peachtree City, Georgia — The debilitating symptoms of peripheral neuropathy (PN) are numerous and the misery neuropathy brings to its sufferers is well docu-mented. But there are now doctors in the Atlanta area turning peripheral neuropathy on its head and offering many patients NEW HOPE where there was little to be had. How Do You Know You Have (PN) Peripheral Neuropathy Or If You Can Be Helped By This Exclusive New Treatment Protocol?

Numbness Tingling Burning Swelling/Edema Cramping Sharp stinging or stabbing pain Pain when walking Difficulty balancing because of numbness or pain Trouble sleeping because of leg & foot pain/

discomfort Restless legs

Why ‘Modification’ Type Treatments Often Times Work Well For Neuropathy Patients… The TRUTH is this… neuropathy is most commonly not ONE problem but a “collection” of problems often made worse by certain lifestyle behavior. When combined with advanced technologies, lifestyle and or ‘Modification Type Treatments’ can significantly reduce or even eliminate pain and numbness. And THIS is why the neuropathy solutions that Dr. Matthew Dunn, D.C has assembled have become so “in-demand” for so many Atlanta area chronic pain & neuropathy (PN) sufferers. Because smart Doctors and patients know… if you can ELIMINATE the swelling, pain, and discomfort ...

“FDA cleared technologies combined with a little good old fashioned ingenuity has even given some who considered themselves ‘hopeless

cases’… relief from the pain and numbness of neuropathy” Especially for those who have diabetes, this isn’t a matter of improving lifestyle or just feeling better. This becomes a matter of QUALITY of LIFE. Neuropathy Doesn’t Have To Be a Life Sentence… Neuropathy Doesn’t Have To Mean Chronic Pain, Numbness, or Loss of Function… For years many foot/leg pain and numbness sufferers had only a few options: Live with it Take medications for the rest of your life Get injections that may give only temporary relief

None of the above options address the “real” issues such as poor circulation, inflammation, muscle weakness and poor balance. Using a combination of extremely advanced drugless treatment procedures along with recently developed non-invasive FDA cleared technology matched with closely monitored and tested modification type treatments and the oversight of a few of Atlanta’s most respected health care providers… Neuropathy sufferers find themselves quite literally JUMPING for JOY with the revelation that there is a treatment system that has the potential to provide pain relief, restore their health, improve function, well-being and confidence in their ability to live their life pain free. The good news is… treatments are gentle, safe, and comfortable. Best of all: no drugs, surgery or any injections.

AND ELIMINATE or reduce the need for pain medication… you also RADICALLY decrease the dangers of wounds and ulcers that won’t heal on the legs and feet and the increased risk of FALLS leading to severe injuries.

Comprehensive Neuropathy Evaluation — Only $47.00

Comprehensive Evaluation includes: Neuropathy involvement, Pain Fibers, Foot & Leg Circulation, Nerve Sensitivity, Thermal Receptor, Pressure Receptors, Sub-Zero Sensation, Light Touch Sensitivity, Pain Fiber Receptivity and Balance Testing.

An evaluation that’s valued at over $200 is YOURS for only $47, if you’re one of the first 21 qualified callers. (Offer ends 5/17/2013) Find out if you are a candidate for this new painless and effective treatment.

Breakthrough Treatment HelpsMany Patients Reduce or Eliminate Sharp, Burning, Leg & Foot Pain,

Numbness & Tingling

We recently had our annu-al spring campout with the Mighty Men of Pack 47.

B i t t e r s we e t i n a w a y. Youngest SON of Thunder will be moving up to Troop 47 this fall. So the last official cam-pout with the younger titans.

There are rather large differ-ences between what is known as “car camping” and back-packing. That’s mainly in the stuff one totes. Backpacking, by its very name, suggests everything you bring is carried on your back. The old adage that ounces equals pounds and pounds equals pain holds true when it’s on your back.

Car camping means there are no weight limits. And for some reason, it takes twice as long to pack for an overnight car camping trip than it does for a three-day backpacking one. Go figure.

It’s all about weight; or not at all. The SONs’ backpacking tents weigh about two pounds. Our car camping tent, which can house a small vil lage, requires a forklift to move. The Little Black Dress calls it the condo. I’ve stayed in beach houses smaller than the condo.

There are two key advantag-es to car camping: a plethora of ice, as much as you want. And when nature calls, you don’t have to be one with nature, but can actually use something that flushes.

It is not until you can’t have something that you realize how much you need it. Or at least appreciate it. Ice is a won-der. So is sitting down when needed. Let’s celebrate the small stuff.

I think there need to be cer-tain rules. For example, if you are camping — regardless of the type of said camping — I think you should camp.

And so, after observing both kids and adults, a few final thoughts on car camping. You will probably figure out which are for the older generation.

1. You may not bring a gen-erator. End of discussion.

2. You may not go get into your car at 4 a.m. and run your heater because you are cold. Be prepared, as the Scouts say. Bring warm clothes. And since everyone else is trying to sleep, a nearby running car does not help.

3. If you have to lift off a 30-pound Dutch oven and a bag of groceries off the ice chest to get a drink, let me assure you that is not part of the “commu-nity chest.” Bring your own.

4. Bringing one of those guest-type air mattresses that require an electric pump, or a large foot pump at minimum, does not fall under the catego-ry of camping. Nor do designer sheets.

5. Bringing your microwave, BOSE surround sound stereo, hair dryer and other accoutre-ments is not camping. See No. 1 above.

6. You are more than wel-come to sit in my camp chair. If I am around, at least ask. When I come back and say I’d like to sit in my chair, don’t say “I had it first.”

7. You are also free to try out my hammock. But it’s also where I sleep so please ask first. And no, you may not “keep-bor-row” it. I want it back.

8. If you are coming to camp, please stay to camp. The only exception is an actual tornado. Said tornado must be within throwing distance. I say this because someone decided to take down their condo about 4 in the morning. This was fol-lowed by dragging all their ice coolers filled with ice, sloshing around. I thought it was a freak-ing tornado.

9. You are in the wilderness. That bear in camp will even-tually leave. The only worry about bears is to be sure there is at least one person slower than you.

10. When you are asked to bring your own plates, water bottles, utensils, etc. — do it. I am not the kitchen. Re-read that whole “Be Prepared” thing. Someone went to the trouble of making a list of who is doing what and what to bring. Read it.

Obey it. 11. You are more than wel-

come to borrow my phone to call your mother. Do not return in an hour and tell me my phone is dead.

12. Do not poke me in the eye with that stick you just sharpened.

13. Do not throw things in the fire that won’t burn easily. Do not throw things in the fire that will explode.

14. I will be more than happy to help you set up your tent. The emphasis is on “help.” You don’t get to walk away to eat a hotdog.

15. Say thank you when some-one cooks your dinner or yanks that tick off of you.

16. The White Monkey always goes camping with me. You are free to say hi to him. Please do not touch him — he bites. And no, you may not sleep with him because you forgot your own special blanket/stuffed animal/whatever. I get scared at night too. He keeps me safe.

17. Tell ghost stories at your own risk. Just don’t keep me up all night with all the lights on because you are now scared. That goes for the kids too.

18. You are outdoors. Enjoy it. Do not rush. Relax and have fun.

Wise words on campingCommunity Connection

Everybody loves a vacation. There is nothing like a few days off to recharge the batteries, adjust the attitude and, most of all, escape the stress.

The problem is, vacations end and we drag ourselves away from fun-filled frolics to face another stretch of hard time filled with personal anxiety, job woes, insolent children, undis-ciplined pets and septic tank backups.

If you escape those per-ils, you’re still at risk from America’s three greatest public health threats, which, according to the CDC, are obesity, hand-guns and Republicans.

How many times have you wished you could go on vaca-tion and never come back? To leave the stress and strain of daily life behind forever. Well, according to a brand new Gallup poll, you can. And you don’t even have to leave home. At least if “home” is in the right state.

The Gallup organization just released its latest rankings of states whose residents are the “most stressed” and “least stressed” in the entire USA.

To no one’s surprise, Hawaii was named the most “stress free” state. Hawaii has taken top honors in low stress every year since the poll began in 2008. It’s easy to see why.

H ow c o u l d a n yo n e b e stressed in Hawaii? Gorgeous weather, beautiful beaches, erupting volcanoes, hula danc-es, luaus, pineapple planta-tions, surfing, hordes of tour-

ists. What’s not to love? Hawaii doesn’t even have mosquitoes.

It’s not perfect. A favorite food is fried Spam—which is even served at McDonald’s—but aside from occasional bouts of turmoil (see Pearl Harbor), life doesn’t get any mellower than it does in the Aloha state.

Paradise does, however, have its price. Hawaii also boasts the nation’s highest cost of living.

According to Gallup, the five most stress-free states are Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Iowa and Wyoming.

Hawai i i s a no-bra iner. Louisiana? Easy. Spend a week in Cajun country and you’ll wonder why anyone would live anywhere else. Louisiana is low-stress because natives—includ-ing me—learn at their mama’s knee that there’s no excuse for not having a good time. When I called New Orleans home, people actually threw hurri-cane parties when the weather turned treacherous.

I can also understand how Iowa can be a low-stress loca-tion. It’s a beautiful place full

of wonderful people, but there’s nothing in Iowa to get stressed about unless you’re Orville Redenbacher and the corn crop is failing.

W y o m i n g i s h o m e t o Yellowstone, Jackson Hole and downtown Casper. Nothing there to raise a blood pressure. The only recorded incident of civil unrest in Wyoming hap-pened when the price of f ly-fishing licenses went up.

Those four make sense. But Mississippi? I’ve lived next door or nearby half my life and have visited a couple of times in the past year. Great scenery, colorful history, the Delta is a delight, Oxford abounds with charm and the fried catfish at the Taylor Grocery is the best you ever slid between two lips.

T he ev idence —at lea s t according to Gallup— seems to indicate that those things alone are enough to chase that stress right out of your life. Ironically, Mississippi also ranks among the nation’s poorest states by population. Guess that proves that money can’t buy happiness.

Some Southerners still say “Thank God for Mississippi” when they need to convince themselves that things are always worse somewhere else. Namely, Mississippi.

The Magnolia state may not measure up to its neighbors in every category, but the lat-est evidence shows that when it comes to la id-back l i fe-styles, God has already blessed Mississippi beyond measure.

Chill, y’all

The Newnan Times-Herald won nine awards in the 2013 Better Newspaper Advertising Contest, announced at the Georgia Press Association’s recent annual Advertising Conference.

The awards were in the division C for smaller daily newspapers in Georgia.

Funds set up to assist family with expenses

from deadly fire

Photo by Jeffrey LeoA makeshift memorial in front of the charred remains of the Midland Park Lane residence where a deadly house fire killed five people.

The 11th annual Lindsey Riggs Foundation golf tournament will be held May 10 at Orchard Hills on Georgia Highway 16 south of Newnan.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The four-person scramble will be $65 per player, $260 per team, and includes green fees, cart, range balls, lunch and prizes.

There will be a chance to win a 2013 Buick for a hole -in-one.

All proceeds benefit the Lindsey Riggs Foundation and are tax deductible, organizers said.

The memorial fund foundation was created to benefit children with special needs and to assist students pursuing higher education. The purpose is to “promote Lindsey’s core values including a love for God, a passion for people, a joy of giving and a dedication to learning,” according to foundation members.

Glove of the game

McCarthy started playing ball, Cochran repaired gloves for his son and teammates at Newnan High and later at Georgia Southwestern, where Patrick played college ball.

Cochran’s reputation spread and he began to get inquiries — and jobs — from total strangers.

He eventually opened a website and business picked up even more. Debbie did a “before and after” video showing how Deland could bring a glove back to life and posted it on YouTube, and the business soared. Soon, orders were coming in from across the nation.

Eventually, Cochran’s fame spread all the way to Hollywood.

Last year, totally out of the blue, Cochran got a call from a Hollywood prop manager saying he was working on a new movie about Jackie Robinson called “42.” He said the film would be using 1947-era gloves. The prop manager had found some gloves but they needed to be repaired and restored for the film. He asked if Cochran could do the work.

Cochran said “sure” and, for two months, never heard another word.

Then the man called back, the deal was made and Cochran found himself with a pile of old gloves needing lots of TLC and,

in some cases, replacement parts that aren’t available anymore.

“The guy said he had a bunch of gloves he needed to break in,” Cochran says. “They were really in bad shape. They were dry and stiff and had dry rot and were missing pieces or parts.”

Cochran didn’t throw up his hands. He got busy oiling and massaging and repairing those gloves back to the same condition they might have been in 1947, when the movie story takes place.

“They couldn’t look brand new,” Cochran says, “because players don’t use a glove in a game until it’s broken in.”

“But they had to look as good as they would have when they were being used,” he said.

Cochran f inished his work on sched-ule. The gloves were perfect, the movie is a hit and now Deland Cochran can add “Hollywood baseball movie glove expert” to his resume. But he probably won’t.

Cochran loves baseball, but says his work is not about becoming rich and famous.

“I do this because I love it,” he says. “I still enjoy helping people keep their

favorite glove on the field.”

Deland Cochran gets busy removing the laces from a baseball glove he will repair.

Friends and family of the vic-tims in a recent fatal fire that killed five people, including four children, are setting up accounts to help defray funer-al costs and support the sole survivor.

Alonna McCrary, 28, two of her children and two stepchil-dren perished in the fire that broke out about 1 a.m. The sole survivor, an 11-year-old daugh-ter, escaped through a window with the help of a passerby.

Besides the mother, those who died were Erial McCrary, 5; Messi’ah White, 3; Nikkiah W h ite , 2 ; a nd M a K i n z ie Florence, 1 . Eriel and Nikia were daughters of McCrary and the other two were stepdaugh-ters. Eleven-year-old Nautica “Molly” McCrary was taken to the hospital after the accident, but was back at the residence later Saturday.

T h e A l o n n a M c C r a r y Memorial Fund has been set up through Wells Fargo Bank,

according to lead teller Gloria Wilson.

“Donations may be dropped off at any Wells Fargo branch,” she said, adding the funds will be used to help the family expenses.

Another fund, to cover the funeral expenses for 1-year-old MaKinzie, was set up at United Bank, 61 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan, according to President Steve Stripling.

Molly McCrary said in an interview with The Newnan Times-Herald that she woke up and was unable to breath. She went to find her mother but she was not in her room. Molly said her mother was outside and came back in, but Molly never saw her again. Molly escaped through a window.

The state fire marshal deter-mined the f ire started in a breaker box and was electrical in nature, authorities said. The house was fully involved by the time firefighters arrived.

The children were staying for a sleepover, according to relatives.
