I saw a notice in Calvary Church’s bulletin that Landis Homes was seeking volunteers. Since I live in Lititz, I called Sue Shirk, Director of Volunteer Services, to inquire about becoming a volunteer and the adventure began. I found out there were many ways I could serve. My first volunteer assignment was shopping at Oregon Dairy. My shopping partner has always been resident volunteer, Mim Noll, and we became, in our minds, “The Dream Team.” Later that year, I suggested to my husband, Ken, that maybe we could help at Fellowship Day. Because of a tropical storm that year and a week’s postponement, there were lots of ways we could serve for two days. We helped with packaging rolls and cookies and spent the day of the event helping set up and running errands wherever needed. We were sent many places to fill in gaps. Those nights we were exhausted, but it felt so good to feel needed and useful. Ken continues to volunteer on weekends escorting residents by wheelchair to special events in the chapel, at subsequent Fellowship Days, and at the annual Corn Pickin’ 5K run. I have since become a manager in the General Store and the card and gift buyer for both the Dogwood Gift Shoppe and the General Store. I have driven shuttle, escorted residents and helped in the mailroom and at book sales. Ken and I power shop once a month at Costco to buy mostly candy for all the sweet-toothed people of Landis Homes. We never leave Costco without someone commenting about the amount of sweets we are buying. We smile and say it is for some friends. Often I have wondered if I am really serving. Then a resident will come into the store and be very appreciative that the stores provide an opportunity to shop even when it might be difficult to go off campus. I love to decorate the store windows which residents walk by, especially when they knock on the window and give me a thumbs up. Having retired from my retail job, I can spend more time volunteering at Landis Homes. My first day of driving shuttle was disastrous. Fortunately, my rider had a terrific sense of humor and we both just laughed at my struggles. Eventually, I got her to her destination. It was fun to do all these different things but I could not do everything, so I have settled in at the General Store and shopping. I enjoy meeting and getting to know our customers. They have become friends. Ken and I look forward to his retirement so we can both be involved with Landis Homes. We have different volunteer opportunities in mind but we love serving here. My Volunteer JourneyBy Deb Lakeman

In 2010, I was looking for a place and a way I could be of service.

My shopping partner has always been resident volunteer, Mim Noll, and we became, in our minds, “The Dream Team.”

Later that year, I suggested to my husband, Ken, that maybe we could help at Fellowship Day.

I have driven shuttle, escorted residents and helped

in the mailroom and at book sales.

2 Landis Homes • Spring 2017

Landis Homes employs more than 530 people. As a team, all are working to serve the residents and clients who call this community their home as well as those who come to the Adult Day Services program and those in the wider community who are cared for by Landis at Home. This month I am interviewing Allen Heinly, who serves as Vice President of Human Resources, about the ways Landis Homes works to stay connected with this group of wonderful team members and how the organization is constantly listening and learning from them.

Why does Landis Homes spend time and resources seeking input from team members about their experiences? We are blessed with a very committed group of team members who closely align with the organizational values and goals. Each individual brings a unique perspective and valuable experience and skills. Listening to their thoughts and stories gives us insight into their affirmations, concerns, needs and ideas which assists us in improving our service to residents, clients and families, as well as making sure team members feel supported and honored for their efforts. The investment we make to receive this feedback is repaid many times over by the learnings and resulting improvements.

How does Landis Homes get this information? There are a number of ways we gather this information through both formal and informal methods. Every other year we utilize an outside organization which conducts a formal survey, gathering input from the vast majority of team members. The feedback received is then tabulated and shared widely across the organization. It provides a “big picture” view of areas where we excel and where there is room for improvement. We as a Human Resources team take this information very seriously, as does the Leadership Team and all Supervisory staff. Another method of gaining information is via “Conversation Times with the President.” These informal small group discussions are held every 1-2 years. They offer team members opportunity to come hear from Larry Zook and others on the Leadership Team, ask any questions they may have about the direction and goals of the organization, and offer input for improvement and future development.

Do you have an example of something learned via this process? Recent surveys and discussion showed there was much room for improvement in the performance evaluation process. Supervisors were finding it difficult to get through the formal process in a timely manner and many team members felt it was not a process that was very helpful to their work. This led to the creation of an inter-disciplinary team that guided

a complete overhaul of the system to create an informal process, titled “One 2 One Conversations.” We anticipate this being more in line with what team members reported would be meaningful and also more effective in team member engagement and development.

Landis Homes has team members from 4 different age groups. How does that affect how we gather and respond to their input? Writer Ron Zemke notes, “We have four generations working side-by-side for the first time in history. All have unique experiences and attributes which influence their attitudes towards work.” Our team profile bears this out. This means we are moving to processes of gathering and responding more quickly and more informally to connect with the generations who appreciate that model. We also continue to explore ways to share information with our team members electronically while remembering some still prefer more formal relationship pathways.

Gratitude for a Job Well DoneBy Allen Heinly, Vice President of Human Resources

Change is coming to the Volunteer Services department. Since November 2004, Sue Shirk has guided this important work. She is planning to retire in June of this year. The scale of volunteers who enhance services at Landis Homes is impressive. In the past fiscal year, there were nearly 430 volunteers who served, with more than 310 of them being resident volunteers. Previous to working here, Sue worked at MTS Travel as an international travel consultant, and in 2003 coordinated travel arrangements for Mennonite World Conference Assembly which was held in Zimbabwe, Africa. Prior to MTS Travel, she worked at Mennonite Central Committee.

During Sue’s time at Landis Homes, she gave oversight to recruitment and coordination of volunteers through a number of important changes and new initiatives. One change was in the growth of the campus. During this time, resident numbers increased from 600 to more than 800. The all-volunteer mail team of approximately 75 volunteers transitioned to become a combination of paid staff and volunteers, and the all-volunteer bus driver team shifted to paid staff.

Another new effort was the development of the Star Comforter program. Star Comforter volunteers provide calming and supportive end of-life companionship to residents until family can arrive, or as a brief respite for the family who are there. Small comforters, knotted by residents and team members in personal care and healthcare households, are displayed at the resident’s room door for a few days following a death, as a way to honor their life and offer comfort to former neighbors and staff caregivers. This program won a LeadingAge PA award for Volunteer Group in 2007 and has served over 100 residents and their family members.

We wish Sue the best in her retirement. Soon she will have more time to watch her beloved Philadelphia Flyers hockey team and travel. She will still be seen at Landis Homes since she recently moved into a cottage on campus. We are grateful for all of Sue’s time and attention that has been a great benefit and support to both the residents and the volunteers.

Sue Shirk

Volunteer Group Cares for CampusIn 2016, a volunteer group of residents formed, naming

themselves the Friends of the Woods and Wetlands. They volunteer time, talent and expertise on behalf of the flora and fauna on the Landis Homes campus.

The group sees its mission as nurturing a diversity of native plants to support the ecosystems of Leaman Woods, Kurtz Run and the connecting wetlands. The group also spends time studying relevant environmental issues and makes recommendations of practices consistent with good stewardship of the natural world on campus and beyond.

The Friends of the Woods & Wetlands has several working groups:

Birding Group – maintain birdhouses and track bird sightings

Butterfly Group – encourage use of plants that attract and support butterflies

Flora Group – nurture and diversify native plants

Fauna Group – introduce and monitor frogs, tadpoles and minnows in ponds and wetland pockets

Invader Group – control invasive plants

Mapping Group – map trees and birdhouses by latitude and longitude markings

Friends of Woods and Wetlands inspect bluebird box installed at edge of wetlands

Campus UpdatesLearning & Wellness Center with Crossings Apartments

• Construction is well underway for the new Learning & Wellness Center with 22 Crossings apartments. Work includes pouring concrete footings and foundation walls, laying block for stair towers and elevator shaft, as well as installing storm water controls and other underground utilities. Setting steel columns and beams for the floor deck over the parking garage is scheduled the last week of April.

• The projected completion is the end of March 2018 for the 22 apartments and Learning & Wellness Center making up Phase 1 of the expansion. All apartments in Phase 1 have been reserved by individuals who joined the Priority Program. The Residency Planning team continues to accept refundable $2,000 priority deposits for the 33 apartments in Phase 2a and 24 apartments in Phase 2b.

• Construction on Phase 2a is scheduled to begin in September 2017 with completion projected for September 2018. The 33 apartments in Phase 2a include six larger, two bedroom/two bath with a den homes that have approximately 1600 square feet of living space. Finalized pricing and floor plans for Phase 2a will be available in early summer. To learn more about the new Crossings apartments, please contact Sarah Short, Director of Residency Planning, at [email protected], or (717) 381-3549.

Another milestone for the Connections Campaign for the Learning & Wellness Center was reached in early March. Steering Committee co-chair, J. Elvin Kraybill, right, and Communications Committee member, Anna Grace Martin, placed the new $2.75 million panel on the sign located near Harvest View.

Thank you for the many gifts of all sizes which are an important part of this campaign as we strive to exceed our goal of $3.2 million. Please contact Beth Trout, Vice President of Advancement, at [email protected] or 717-381-3544 with any questions or to discuss participation.

Hats off to our Dining Team

Four dining team members spent part of their weekend recently creating some delicious food samplings to help support The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon. The council worked with 900 individuals in the past year promoting educational and work skills. Our dining team spent hours preparing hundreds of samples of Yellow Fin Tuna, Yam Pavé and Mousse Cups. They received rave reviews for their menu with almost every bite consumed by the end of the event.

New Director of Life Enrichment BeginsMichele Stipe began as the Director of Life Enrichment in April. In this role she is

responsible for oversight and coordination of the total resident wellness programming including physical, social, spiritual, intellectual, and vocational wellness and the general activities program at Landis Homes.

She will also collaborate with the Children’s Learning Center on campus for intergenerational events and will be a key player in the new programing for the Learning & Wellness Center which will open in the Spring of 2018.

Stipe comes with much experience in this field. She was most recently employed as Wellness Manager at Mennonite Home and has prior experience as a Wellness Director at Brethren Village.

She is a graduate of Gettysburg College with a degree in business administration and is currently attending California University of Pennsylvania to obtain her master’s degree later this year in Exercise Science and Health Promotion.

Michele, who is originally from Maryland, lives with her husband in Lititz, PA. They are the parents of four young adult children, the youngest of which is a senior in high school. She serves as a Life Group Leader at the LCBC Church. In her spare time she enjoys exercise, jogging, watching movies, reading, spending time with her family and attending her youngest son’s soccer games.

She said, “I have a dog, Jingles, a Bichon, who is 11 years old and is my best buddy!”

Stipe went on to say, “When I shared with people about my new position, I heard nothing but wonderful comments about what a great place Landis Homes is to work and live. I’m excited to be here and look forward to getting to know other team members and residents.”

Pictured left to right at the Marriot in Lancaster are Executive Chef & Manager Fernando Garcia, Sous Chef Jonah Marconi, Executive Chef & Manager John Marconi and Assistant Catering Manager Devon Fenimore.

Celebrates 10th AnniversaryRecently, Landis at Home clients, friends and current and former team

members gathered to celebrate their 10th Anniversary of providing support services to persons choosing to remain in their own homes.

“I remember those early days when we were starting out and were learning as the program grew,” said Faith Hoover, who served as the first director of the program from 2007-2012.

One of the most popular services is transportation to medical appointments, shopping or personal events. Hoover recalled a time when a team member drove to

Philadelphia airport to pick up a client returning from out of state during the winter holidays. She said, “The weather turned so bad, the team member just booked a hotel room near the airport, spent the night with the client and returned her safely home the next day.”

Current Landis at Home Director Michele Sipel shared a recent example of the dedication of team members when three caregivers spent the night at Landis Homes in a bad weather, in order to give early morning services to their clients on campus.

Sipel noted, “We continue to raise the bar in going above and beyond in serving our clients.”

In addition to providing services to clients who are Landis Homes residents, support services also extend to persons living in their own homes in the surrounding community within a 15-mile radius of the campus.

Landis at Home received a home-care license on May 1, 2010. All services are provided under the oversight of a registered nurse. In addition to transportation, staff persons provide companionship, light housekeeping services, assistance with personal care needs and sometimes, even pet care.

Landis at Home has grown in services, employees and clients. In the past fiscal year, almost 50 team members logged over 23,000 hours of services to more than 300 clients. Find out more at www.LandisatHome.org.

Pictured left to right are first Landis at Home Director, Faith Hoover, and current Director Michele Sipel.

Alex Knox, front, and Damaris Melo-Smucker enjoy the celebration.

Art Reception Features Local Artist

A spring art reception will be held on May 2 with a display of the most recent works of Larry Hostetter. This will be the first time Hostetter, who lives in Lancaster, will exhibit his work at Landis Homes.

Hostetter studied portrait painting for approximately 15 years under the instruction of Dr. Ronald Sykes at the Lancaster County Art Association. When Larry started painting, he used oil paints. In recent years he also works with acrylics. As a hobby, he paints scenes and people from photographs and has also experimented with clay sculptures of people and animals. Some woodcarving art pieces that represent the natural world will also be part of the exhibit.

The opening reception, to which the public is welcome, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, in the Harvest View lobby and galleries. Live music will be provided by Janet Eberly. The works will continue to be on display through July. For more information, call Landis Homes at 717-381-3550.

Earth Day 2017 Focus Sun Energy

As this issue of Horizons was being printed, Earth Day, which promotes the importance of environmental issues around the world, was celebrated on April 25.

Plans for the day include a bus tour to Mennonite Disaster Services headquarters on Airport Road, Lititz, to learn about solar energy in a practical way. Solar power can be used to generate electricity or to heat water. Widespread use of solar panels reduces dependence on fossil fuels. At the Mennonite Disaster Service office and warehouse, 80-85% of the electricity is provided by rooftop solar panels.

In the evening, a vegetarian and vegan meal was planned in the Azalea Room to be enjoyed by residents and off campus guests. The menu included an assortment of healthy vegetarian as well as vegan foods prepared by the dining services team.

What is a CCRC?A Continuing Care Retirement Community, or CCRC, is a distinct type of retirement community that offers multiple care options at one location. Having several levels of care is an incredible benefit as it provides individuals with the security of knowing that if they ever need personal care, memory support, rehabilitation care or skilled nursing care – it’s all right there in one community.

CCRC levels of care: • Residential Living

• Personal Care

• Memory Support

• Skilled Nursing

• Rehabilitation Care

In addition, several communities also offer adult day services, home health services and child care on-site.

For the 7th annual “Explore Retirement Living” Open House, your neighborhood non-profit retirement communities are joining together to open our doors and celebrate the many qualities that make us each unique.

Our goal is to provide a day of information-sharing where you can stop by with your friends and family, meet current residents and casually explore the communities that interest you most.

What Can You Expect? On this special day, you will be treated to:

• A warm welcome – so feel free to bring your entire family!

• Light refreshments

• A look at many living options

• Information about each community
