What is Global

Warming ?

A slow but sure escalation inthe overall temperature of theEarth's atmosphere generallyattributed to the g r e e n h o u s ee f f e c t caused by increasedlevels of carbon dioxide,CFCs, and other pollutants iscalled G l o b a l W a r m i n g .

When greenhouse gaseslike carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbon(CFC’s) etc.trap the outgoing solarradiations of the sunreflected by the surface ofthe earth and do not allow theheat to escape then this isknown as greenhouse effectwhich causes GLOBAL

WARMING.

Effects

Global Warming has numerousharsh effects which arerepresented by these pictures:

15IPCC

The frequency of heavy precipitation events has

increased over most land areas

- Rainfall in Mumbai (India), 2005:

1 million people lost their homes

Page 16: My presentation

16IPCC

Intense tropical cyclone activity has increased

in the North Atlantic since about 1970

- Hurricane Katrina, 2005: up to $200 billion cost estimate

Page 17: My presentation

17IPCC

More intense and longer droughts have been observed over wider areas

since the 1970s, particularly in the tropics and subtropics

What can be done ?

"As a society, we can bluntthe worsening of global warming byimmediately cutting back on ourwasteful energy usage. If we donothing, the effects will be muchworse."
