AUGUSTA, ME – Of Maine’s12,000 public high school studentswho receive their diplomas thismonth, 61 percent are expected toenroll in college. Yet, by the time theyreach their mid-twenties, barely 38percent will have earned a collegedegree.

In February 2011 the Pathways toProsperity Project at the HarvardGraduate School of Education(HGSE) released a report challengingour country’s excessive focus on theidea that a four-year degree is the

only pathway to success in theworkforce. The report argues that weneed to create additional pathwaysthat combine rigorous academics withstrong technical education to equipthe majority of young people with theskills and credentials to succeed in ourincreasingly challenging labormarket. Pathways to Prosperity:Meeting the Challenge of PreparingYoung Americans for the 21st Centuryhit a nerve among employers, educators, and state officialsstruggling with high unemploymentrates, perceived skills mismatches,

and the devastating effect of thefinancial crisis on young people.

The enormous interest generated bythe Pathways report has led to thelaunch of the Pathways to ProsperityNetwork, a collaboration betweenHGSE, Jobs for the Future (JFF) andseven states—including Maine. Thisnetwork is committed to ensuring thatmany more young people completehigh school, attain a valuablepostsecondary credential, and begina career while leaving open theprospect of further education.

Maine Governor Paul LePage said,“In shaping a responsive workforcedevelopment system, I remainconvinced that well-defined careerpathways for all young people areessential to building a qualifiedworkforce for all Maine industries.”

To accomplish this goal in Maine,Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG) willlead a coalition of key public andprivate sector leaders, includingemployers and educators, who arecommitted to building a variety ofcareer pathways that will link high

Craig Larrabee, President& CEO ofJMG said, “There is no single entity –not the public school system, nor thebusiness community that can do thiswork alone. By combining theresources of everyone who has astake in the future of Maine’s studentsand Maine’s economy, we can ensurethat our young people are preparedto meet the demands of today’s jobmarket.”

The work will initially focus on themanufacturing labor market in Maine, however, the long-term goal is tocreate a statewide system of careerpathways that can serve a majority ofstudents. After years of decline, jobsin the manufacturing industry in Maineare on the rise. Lisa Martin, ExecutiveDirector of the ManufacturersAssociation of Maine, says, “We arethrilled to be partnering with such agreat program as JMG! The Pathwaysto Prosperity program will increaseour outreach to young people foropportunities in manufacturing andwill assist in our efforts to market andplace students in great careers.”

How to evaluate your resume’s spelling and grammar By Stephanie Clark

Resume blunders abound! A quickinternet search reveals funniestbloopers such as "renovating a horse"and having an affinity for "cookingChinese and Italians"! Although thesemight tickle funny bones in a comedyact, they are unlikely to impress arecruiter. He or she will simply go onto the next applicant - there simplyisn't the time to give thisunprofessional resume a secondthought! Nor is there the need; afterall, there are many more to choosefrom.

Such errors would never have beenfound by spell-check as these do notinclude spelling mistakes. These errorsindicate the need to proof-read.

Here are a few ideas for perfectingresume-specific spelling andgrammar.

SpellingThere is no excuse for spelling"director" as "dirctor," as spell-checkwill catch this typo with a squiggly redunderline.

But do watch words such as"manager," which is often typed"manger," and would not be caughtby spell-check.

• Read your resume through, word

by word, out loud, or from end tobeginning, to catch words such asmold-mould, than-then, premier-premiere, manager-manger, etc.

NumbersIn proper writing, numbers from zeroto nine are written out, and from 10on up, are in numerical form. However, in resumes you may chooseto use numbers from "0" and on, inorder to save space.

Whichever you choose, stick to oneformat throughout your document.

There's one more reason to use theactual numbers: these pop off thepage for quick reading, and alsosave a bit of space, an importantconsideration when making the mostof valuable resume "real-estate."

CapitalizationCapitalization rules are complex, and thus this is an area of confusion.A few common rules to follow:

• Capitalize the first word in asentence.

• Capitalize proper nouns, i.e.names of people, places, months, and famous buildings.

• Capitalize terms that are importantto you and your audience. In a cover

letter you might write "ABC's searchfor an Administrative Assistant cameto my attention at last night'sAdministrative Professional networkingmeeting," and in an email you mightwrite "hey mom, I'm interested in theadministrative assistant position withABC."

• Do not capitalize most titles. Forexample, "I worked closely with thecompany's vice president ofmarketing... " although you wouldwrite "I spoke with the President of theUnited States on occasion." And thePresident's title is the only one youmust capitalize.

• DON'T CAPITALIZE EVERYTHING.It means you are shouting, and if usedextensively, is difficult to read.

PunctuationWriting in bullets does not yet havehard and fast rules. I like to stick to thisformat:

• when launching a bullet in lowercase letter, I refrain from addingpunctuation at the end

• When launching the bullet with acapitalization, I add a period at theend.

Leave the semi-colons and colons forexperts, and stick to commas andperiods only. And there is no need forexclamation marks in your resume!!!!as although they do "scream," they donot scream "professionalism."

ParallelismThink of parallelism as deliberaterepetition, as in bulleted formats, apredictable mix of paragraph andbullets, the use of one font for allheadings and another for content, and so on.

Parallelism also refers to the use ofverbs to launch bullets. Using a stringof strong verbs makes it easier foryour reader to skim through. That'sbecause the brain expects, and is

therefore prepared for a certainstructure.

Another aspect of parallelism relatesto sentence structured. Here is anexample:

Incorrect:

Composed committee meetingminutes and distributing them tocommittee members.

Correct:

Composed minutes for two corporate-level committee meetings, anddistributed minutes to executive-levelmembers. Also, posted minutes oncorporate intranet.

The second version has a strongermessage as well! I couldn't resistfixing it up beyond the grammar.

And that's a good point to note:spelling and grammar are but humblebeginnings for a resume that hasinfluence. At the very least it will stopyour reader from tossing your resumeinto the "absolutely not" pile! But tomake it to the "without a doubt" short-list, will take much more than perfectspelling and good grammar.

Equal Opportunity Employer

(ARA) – Registered nursing - alreadythe largest health care occupationwith 2.7 million jobs - is on a massivegrowth trajectory. Employment ofregistered nurses (RNs) is expected toincrease by 26 percent by 2020 andnursing was recently ranked No. 1 inthe U.S. News and World Report's"Best Jobs" list for 2012.

Stephanie Augustin, 27, of Miramar,Fla., can attest to the nursingprofession's appeal. After earning abachelor's degree in biology and a

master's degree in reading education,Augustin worked as a fifth-gradescience teacher. But various factorsmade her question her job stability asa new teacher, including her school'sbudget cuts and new salaryregulations.

Deciding to seek a new careeropportunity, Augustin left her positionas an elementary teacher to pursuenursing, enrolling in the Bachelor ofScience in Nursing (BSN) degreeprogram at Chamberlain College ofNursing. As a full-time student,Augustin will take three years tocomplete the program, with flexibleonline classes, which allow her towork as a tutor while enrolled inschool.

"I'm confident in my decision totransition to a more in-demandcareer," says Augustin. "Nursingprovides an opportunity for me torenew each patient's sense of hopeand trust in the health care process, allowing me to feel better as anindividual by lending a helping handduring my patient's time of need.

"It's still in my heart to teach," sheadds, "but I'd rather teach people

how to stay healthy."

The nursing profession can offermany qualities that job-seekers andcareer-changers find attractive, suchas job stability, flexibility and careeradvancement opportunities.Additionally, nursing is a well-respected field and has been namedthe most trusted profession for 11 ofthe last 12 years, according to theannual Gallup Poll survey.

"Many job-seekers and career-changers are looking for a professionthat is not only ripe with opportunitybut also a personally rewardinglivelihood," says Michelle Mercurio, national manager of career servicesat Chamberlain College of Nursing."Although nursing can bechallenging, nurses have theopportunity to really make a positiveimpact in a patient's life, allowing thenurses to give personally and feelsatisfied at the end of the day -knowing they made a difference."

Several different academic paths canlead to a nursing career, but manyemployers prefer to hire nurses whohave a BSN degree rather than anassociate degree in nursing. Research

shows that more positive patientoutcomes occur when nurses areprepared at the baccalaureate level. One group of researchers found thatevery 10 percent increase in theproportion of BSN nurses on thehospital staff was associated with a 4percent decrease in the risk of death.

Recognizing the increased need formore highly educated nurses, manynursing schools now offer acceleratedBSN degree programs.

Chamberlain, for example, enablesstudents like Augustin to earn theirBSN degree in as few as three yearsof year-round study, allowing them toenter the workforce sooner than theirpeers. In addition, students can earnadvanced degrees, including amaster of science in nursing with aspecialization in the in-demand areasof nursing education, executiveleadership or the high-tech disciplineof nursing informatics.

The high level of fulfillment providedby the nursing profession, combinedwith job stability, flexibility andemployment and advancementopportunities, make it a rewardinglifelong career.
