There’s a Freedom WiThin all oF Us

When Phoenix cooking-school owner, Barbara Fenzl recently paired with celebrity French chef, Jacques Pepin on local broadcast KAET to create some mouth-watering dishes and raise monetary support for public television, it sparked the interest of a great friend of mine, Lynn, who also happens to be a great cook.

Lynn gathered a small group of us, invit-ing us into her home for a viewing party of the broadcast, where we dined on delicious recipes that she prepared utilizing one of her favorite cookbooks, Seasonal Southwest Cooking, by Barbara Fenzl. (We’re providing recipes for a dinner menu of your own inside these pages!)

The experience was a new one for me, and most definitely one of the most unan-ticipated pleasurable evenings I’ve spent recently. Watching the chefs as they created tasty, unique dishes, as we smelled the aromas of our own specially prepared three-course meal, was mesmerizing. I gained a new appreciation for cooking techniques that evening, as it became evident of the talent-filled expression that goes into creative cooking; if it isn’t already, it should truly be defined as an art.

Along with the recent knowledge gained in cuisine, I had the pleasure of meeting some independent indi-viduals in our community as I gathered articles for our

community news section; Americans like, Tane Urrea, featured in our cover story, who has put the liberties of her own freedom to work, by shrinking the gap between two cultures through foreign exchange. Read

about the opportunities she gained by stepping outside the boundaries of her own comfort

zone and how she is helping encourage others to do the same.

As you take a break from defined sched-ules during this relaxed season of summer, I hope you’ll enjoy reading the summer safety tips we’ve provided to keep you aware of water danger, during a month where swim-ming is an important part of our activity.

I’ve found several indicators of freedom to share with you this month. There’s a relax-ing freedom that surrounds great chefs when

they are creating their edible masterpieces. I was front-row in witnessing that artistry of skill and the calmness in the preparations and ‘breaking of the bread’ as we savored great food and conversation. Above all, I’ve learned that expression of our freedom creates a unique excitement within each of us. It’s excitement that is just waiting to be transpired into a new form of greatness. I’m merely scratching the surface of finding new ways that people in our community are expressing that independence.

Experiencing the Freedom of Cultural Exchange

Local resident, Tane Urrea, shares her positive experience of how one person, teamed with one host family, can make a gigantic difference in our cultural gap. The wisdom and enlightenment that she gained through the freedom of her choices to study abroad culturally, helped her gain a wealth of opportunities back in the USA, where she works as a spokesperson for the American Institute of Foreign Study and as a translator for local law enforcement. More important, her personal exchange experience has pro-vided her with unique cultural involvement and family that she will never forget.

Her story:When Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru said, “Culture is the

widening of the mind and of the spirit,” it was as if he was speaking directly to me about my foreign exchange experience. With my high school years and my unanticipated exchange trip a few years behind me, the new opportuni-ties that the experience continue to afford me are continuing and blossom-ing along with my bright future. I have grown culturally in ways that I’d never before imagined.

Here’s how it all began. It was during my junior year of high school, I was given

the opportunity to travel to Toledo, Spain for a semester with a foreign exchange program through my high school in Wisconsin, where I lived with my family. My parents were reluctant to allow me to go, as it was worlds away from the simplicity of my hometown in Wisconsin. Looking back on my exchange experience and seeing what it has done for my future, they realized what a priceless experience it was.

I arrived at the Madrid airport July 16, 2000. On my bus ride from Madrid to Toledo I felt anxious, nervous and frankly, out of place. Having only taken three years of Spanish in high school, I thought, “How am I going to make it through this?” But as my bus came to a stop and my new Spanish family was waiting outside those doors, my nervous-ness disappeared and a new sense of excitement came over me. “I can do this,” I remembered thinking. “It might not be perfect, but I’m going to give it a shot.” My family Maria and Jesus, mamá and papá and my her-mana Cecilia were excited to be welcoming foreign exchange student num-ber seven, me, into their home. They treated me as a member of their own family from my first steps off the bus. At first, conversation was slow and I depended heavily on my Spanish/English dictionary. Yet, day after day, we got along very well which made my experience that much more enriching. During my time in Spain, not only did I go to school, but my family shared their beautiful country and culture with me. We went to Sevilla, Cordoba, Granda, and even across the strait of Gibraltar into Morocco! I saw works of

art by Picasso, old Mosques and even a concert in the park by Maná. I was also able to share some of my culture with them through our conversation exchanges in the days that we spent together. I brought cheese from Wisconsin, travel books from the United States, and even made “American style” lunches for them once per week. My host family loved meatloaf! That semester ended too quickly. As my time with this beautiful family came to a close, I could not believe it had gone by so fast. It was a tearful goodbye, with

promises that we would keep in touch, despite the distance of our cultures and neighborhoods. I thanked them for the amazing gift they had given me, letting me join their family and learn such a great deal about their culture.

When I returned to the United States, my love for the Spanish language grew even stronger. I started working at a literacy center for Spanish-speaking immigrants and spent a summer as a camp counselor in a Spanish-speaking neighborhood. I had a focus for a major, Spanish, and pursued it at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During my junior year in college, I attended the University of Puerto Rico. It solidified my love of learning about new cultures and excited me about being bilingual.

Upon college graduation, I was accepted into a program, Teach for America – an AmeriCorps program which places college graduates to states that need teachers. This is how I landed in Phoenix, Arizona as a dual lan-guage kindergarten teacher. Sharing my passion for different cultures with my students for the last four years has been an amazing experience. I hope that someday my young scholars will have incredible opportunities, like I have had, to explore the world and meet amazing people who will touch their lives forever.

After meeting my husband and having our first (bilingual) child in Arizona, I took a break from the classroom and worked with a non-profit organization called Academic Year in America. This organization helps students experience different cultures and languages, first hand, by foreign exchange. Having lived in Arizona for six years now, I am aware of the stigma associated with our state’s relationship with foreigners. Through Academic Year in America, it is possible to welcome foreign students into our homes for a semester, or even a year, to show them our state and allow them to appreciate the cultural diversity of our own families’ offerings. It can give other students a chance to experience a great opportunity, like the one that I experienced in Spain.

Hello all! I want to let you know that my Revelation Fitness classes are up and running. Opening day was Friday, June 1, at 9am. I am currently accepting interested participants. We will be meeting at the Vineyard Church on the SE corner of Litchfield and Van Buren. Class will be an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes in length. We will do cardio, strength training and lots of great stretching and core work. All levels of physical ability welcome - it will be self-paced, and I will give lots of modi-fications! Most of all, it is all focused on Jesus, on worshiping Him with these bodies we have been given, and bringing our fitness to Him instead of just adding Jesus into our fitness routine. Classes will be donation based, with a suggested $5 donation. Childcare will be provided by Ruth, who does the MOPS childcare at Estrella Mtn Church. Childcare is $2/child or $5/family. NOTE: If you have kids that are really too old for childcare off for the summer, please bring them! They can join us or quietly play in the child care room. I would love to have them join in.

the importance of helmet safety hits home“It’s the telephone call you

never want to receive,” recalls Gayle Hassman as she remem-bers being informed that her son had been struck by a van traveling approximately 30 mph. while walking his bicycle across the street, on his way to school, back in August 2010. Her son, J.P., was being air lifted by medi-cal transport helicopter to St. Joseph’s hospital, she was told that fateful morning. After discussing the events of the acci-dent with doctors, J.P. Hassman’s parents were told that his bicycle helmet had taken the brunt of the crash. J.P., an elementary school fourth grader at the time, also suffered a fractured knee along with some bruising and

abrasions. Although he had a few months of recovery to endure, both physically and emotionally, J.P. was going to be okay. Gale remembers J.P.’s doctor at St. Joseph’s telling both her and her husband, that if J.P. had not been wearing a helmet that morning, then the conversation they were having would be a very different one.

As you might imagine, fear of riding a bicycle set in quickly following the traumatic accident. Not only was it hard for J.P. to sleep at night, he also suffered headaches and he had fears of additional collisions. At that point, had it been up to J.P., he wouldn’t get back on a bike. It was encour-agement from his parents along with a period of counseling sessions, where he was able to work through those fears.

It seems J.P. has made safety a personal obligation, as he continually encourages others to wear a helmet at all times when riding a bicycle. The Hassman family has supported him in his efforts. J.P. knows that if he makes even a handful of his classmates aware of helmet safety each time he rides his own bike, then the reason for his accident has meaning and offers direction for him. A reminder of his pursuit for safety is written on his new bicycle helmet, which reads “JP-1, Van-0.”

Unfortunately, occurrences like J.P.’s happen at times most unlikely and most always unexpected. An accident can happen during the school year, during summer vacation, along a paved bicycle path, side-

walk or trail. Thankfully, local organizations, such as Arizona in ACTION, have stepped in to help raise aware-ness of the needs for helmets for kids who bike, skateboard or rollerblade. You may have read about the Lids For Kids helmet safety program in recent issues of My Hometown Estrella. Earlier this spring,

Arizona in ACTION reported that the “Lids on Arizona Kids’ campaign has increased helmet usage by 542 percent at Estrella’s local elementary schools by bringing awareness to students about the need for safety.” J.P. Hassman’s story is a very personable, local example as well.

Make sure the helmet Fits...

Are you concerned that your child’s hel-met is properly fitted for safety? The First rule of Proper Fit: A bicycle helmet cannot protect what it doesn’t cover!

For Starters- A Simple Test

Check your helmet position and fit by looking in a mirror. Gently rotate the helmet on your head, front to back, and side to side, noticing the skin in your brow area. If the fit is comfort-able, and the skin moves with the helmet, you have a proper fit. If not, your helmet is too loose.

make sure the helmet sits level on top of the head. If it’s tilted back too far, the forehead is exposed. If it is tilted too far for-ward, then the back of the head is exposed.

The facts are in:

• Bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85%.

• Bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of brain injury by as much as 88%.

• It is estimated that 75% of bicycle-related deaths among chil-dren could be prevented with a bicycle helmet.

• Universal usage of helmets by children ages 4 to 15 could prevent as much as 155 deaths and 45,000 head injuries per year in the united States.


Jeordie to Perform July 4 at CantaMia

CantaMia will be celebrating Independence Day with an afternoon of fun live music, and red, white and blue pie. The event is Wednesday, July 4 from 1 to 4pm. at the CantaMia Village Center, 17700 West Star Point Drive, Goodyear. It is free and open to the public.

Taking the stage will be Jeordie Schekeryk, daughter of 1960’s musical artist Melanie (“Brand New Key”, “Lay Down” and “Beautiful People”). Cook-off that will take place July 6 in Holbrook, AZ. They have also

recently competed for the chance of being named the grilling

champion of The Food network hit show Chopped. Chopped is

a cooking competition show that’s all about skill, speed and inge-

nuity where four up-and-coming chefs compete before a panel

of three expert judges and take everyday items and

turn them into an extraordinary three-course meal.

Course by course, the chefs will be “chopped” from

the competition until only one winner remains. The

challenge…? They have seconds to plan and 30 min-

utes to cook an amazing course with the basket of

mystery ingredients given to them moments before

the clock starts ticking! And the pressure doesn’t

stop there. once they’ve completed their dish, they

have to survive the Chopping block where our three

judges are waiting to be wowed and not shy about

voicing their culinary criticisms! The host, Ted Allen,

leads this high energy, high-pressure show which

will have viewers rooting for a winner and cheer-

ing for the losers. CHoPPed is a game of passion,

expertise and skill - and in the end, only one chef will survive the

chopping block. Tune in to the Food network Channel on July 22

ranch bbQ was able to make the cut! The lifestyle director, Holly

Aguilar, is excited, about the event and stated, “We are honored to

This summer the teens of estrella are in for a challenge. don’t

lay around on the couch all summer…get together with your

friends and come out and compete. on June 3 we held the first

of this summer’s teen challenges. The estrella Teen Survivor Island

Challenge was a huge success. over 40 teens competed in the

event which included putting live crickets and worms on their

teammate’s face, working as a team to conquer the balance beam,

and shooting straight to complete the

basketball challenge. Teams received

points for each of the 12 challenges they

completed successfully. It was a close

race, but the “Killer Café” challenge was

the game changer. Competitors were

asked to stomach some crazy menu

options for big points. menu options

included pig’s feet, whole sardines, and

chocolate covered ants, among many

others. In the end, the orange Team

and the dark blue Team tied with over

50 points from the Killer Café challenge.

This month on July 13 we are holding the next teen challenge.

Traveling to new and excit-ing places has become a lifestyle for Norm and Judy Gaede. The two have visited a lengthy list of places near and far, mak-ing them knowledgeable, sea-soned travelers. The Gaedes, along with their friend Carl, are founding members of the Estrella Travel Club, which has been in existence now for just over three years. Norm and Judy, along with the growing number of resident travel club members, are continually seeking new destinations near and far to add to their ‘places to see and experience’ list. As with life, the excitement of traveling is in the memory-making jour-neys, not just the satisfaction of reaching the next destination.

Prior to moving to Arizona, the couple had retired in Vernal, Utah and would often visit their daughter, who lives in the Estrella community. They were going to be ‘Snowbirds,’ but eventually left the -26 degree temperatures of Utah winters, to become permanent Estrella residents. “We’ve been here seven years now, as permanent residents, and we love it,” said Judy.

Norm and Judy kicked off the summer of 2012 with a cruise to Alaska, which started in Vancouver and ended in Fairbanks. “When we ported in Ketchikan, Alaska, it was 70 degrees, so the bears wouldn’t come out to play. That day ended with a dinner of all-you-can-eat Alaskan crab,” recalls Judy. Other excursions on the Alaskan tour included a visit to The Glacier Bay

National Park and the ride on the Denali train with an overnight stay at the Princess Wilderness Lodge. “A highlight to the trip was panning for gold and getting 9.5 grams ($57.00 worth),” remembers Judy. “Norm had the gold made into a locket for me.”

The Gaedes are full of stories recollecting interesting places to experi-ence. Recently, as part of the Estrella Travel Club, the Gaedes visited some unique places in Arizona, including a Verde Canyon Railroad adventure, which consisted of a trip to the Blazin’ M Ranch, complete with an authen-tic barbeque and dinner show. They’ve experienced an Arizona Theatre production, been entertained while dining on pizza at Organ Stop Pizza, home of the largest Wurlitzer theater organ and relished the colorful lights at Phoenix Zoo lights during the holiday season. This month, Norm and Judy are working closely with members of the travel club and the Grand Canyon Tour Company to finalize a trip from Williams to the Yavapai Lodge at the Grand Canyon.

When Judy isn’t packing or unpacking a suitcase, you might spot her bowling, playing a round of Bunco or participating in a sewing group that meets regularly at the Starpointe Residents Club. She enjoys sewing pil-lowcases for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and gets involved with crafty groups on occasion. Norm relishes in ‘name your own’ card games of Poker at the Resident’s Club each Wednesday with a small group of friends. And when they’re grounded in Estrella, the Gaede’s jump into the pool for water aerobics classes.

With the Monsoon season upon us, and already one Haboob (wind storm) event to date, we wanted to provide the Estrella Community with Standard Operating Procedures that explain how the damage and clean-up will be addressed. Four Peaks will systematically move through the com-munity as follows:

1. We will immediately begin to assess the community and compile a list of damage.

2. Our primary concern will be addressing any trees or branches that pose a threat to people or property. If there is sustained damage at your residence that poses this level of concern, please contact the CCMC office immediately at 623-386-1112.

3. During our initial review we will also assess and clear any main arterial roads or sidewalks that have been obstructed from damaged landscape.

4. After ensuring all safety concerns are addressed, we will then begin to work through the neighborhood from north to south to ensure that no issues are missed.

5. Depending on the severity of the storm and damage, storm clean up may take as long as 10 working days. This time will allow for the removal of trees and grind and/or remove the remaining trunk where applicable.

6. After 10 working days following the storm, we encourage all resi-dents to report any issues that were unidentified during the initial evaluation at www.lifeinestrella.com.

Storm Clean Up Procedures at EstrellaTree Pruning to Prevent Storm Damage

There are several reasons to prune your trees, overall health, aesthetics, or just to make it grow where you want it to. The most impor-tant reason to trim your trees is safety. Heavy, over-grown trees are eyesores, but they can also be dangerous to you and your property.

Improper pruning or no pruning at all can cause a variety of problems. Trees left unpruned will be more susceptible to disease and pests. These problems can lead to defects and damage which can ultimately lead to damage to your surrounding property. Another more immediate risk here in Arizona is monsoon damage. The monsoons hit here just as our trees are growing most vigorously and are as dense as they are all year. It is very important to make sure that all of your trees are ready for the monsoons.

Pruning is a simple process and can be completed with basic, inexpen-sive tools. All you will need is a pair of bypass pruners and a pruning saw. When you prune a tree, your goals should be to:

• Remove dead or damaged material.

• Thin canopy to allow wind to pass through and sunlight to enter.

• Trim in a way that is aesthetically pleasing.

The proper way to prune a tree is to perform what arborists call thin-ning cuts. When you make a thinning cut you want to either cut off the branch at its origin or at a bisecting branch that is large enough to act as the main branch. These cuts should be made as close as possible to the branch’s collar at the main trunk, as this type of wound will heal most efficiently. This type of pruning allows the tree to grow in a healthy manner while maintaining its natural shape.

Though pruning your tree to improve your landscape can be satisfying work, it is extremely important to know your limits. If your trees are near power lines, close to property that may be damaged, or just too large you should always consult a professional.

The sun drenches us with UVA and UVB radiation, which could give you sunburn, causing skin damage. The heat, on the other hand, is an issue when it gets above our normal body temperature of 98.6. Here’s how to help protect yourself.

Protection from the sun’s radiation:

If you’re going to be out in the sun, take all necessary cautions. As goofy as it may look, a wide brim, light weight hat is ideal. It protects your scalp, back of your neck, shoulders, face and your ears. Ball caps are far less effective and leave your neck and ears susceptible to damage. Since UVA and UVB radiation can damage your eyes, be sure that your sunglasses are rated to protect you.

Even if you wear the goofy hat, you still need a water proof SPF 45, UVA & UVB sunblock on all exposed skin from the bald spot on top your head to the V-neck of your shirt, both arms and the tops of your feet. UVB is known to affect the outer layers of the skin. UVA radiation is less intense than UVB, but is more likely to reach deeper layers of tissue and cause damage. Remember UV radiation is not stopped by clouds and is easily reflected off of water. It can get you when you’re not expecting it. Be sure your children are well protected at all times. If you use a spray on sunblock, do not inhale during application.

Protection from the heat:

Don’t stand in the sun unless it’s necessary, because it is 10° to 15° hotter in the sun than in the shade. The low humidity in Arizona for most of the year makes our sweat process for cooling the body very effective. As a result, we don’t necessarily realize how much water we are losing. The key to safety and surviving the heat is hydration. Water makes up 60% of a person’s body weight. For me at 190 pounds that comes to 13.7 gallons of water. It may sound like a lot but don’t get overly confident. If hiking at a normal pace on level ground on a 100° day, you will lose 1.0 to 1.5 liters of water an hour. You only need to lose 2% of your water weight to start feeling symptoms of dehydration. If you feel thirsty, dehydration has started. At a loss of 5% the symptoms become severe and with a 10% loss the outcome could be fatal.

Water is the key. Consuming alcoholic or caffeinated beverages will only worsen the dehydration. Non-caffeinated sports drinks are a good choice, because they will help replace electrolytes lost through perspiration.

Southwestern Dinner Party Recipes

white Bean dip with Cumin tortilla Chips

makes approximately 1 ½ cups dip

1 clove fresh garlic, peeled

1 (15 oz) can Great northern beans, rinsed and drained

¼ cup chopped fresh cilan-tro

1 Tbs. fresh lime juice

½ tsp. olive oil

½ tsp. chili powder

½ tsp. ground cumin

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. chopped Serrano chile

Cumin Tortilla Chips

5 (8-inch) flour tortillas

Vegetable oil cooking spray

1 Tbs. cumin seeds

2 tsp. kosher salt

To prepare dip: With food processing machine running, add garlic through feed tube. Remove top and add remaining ingredients. Puree until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

To prepare chips: Preheat oven - 400 degrees. Stack tortillas, then using sharp knife, cut the stack into 12 wedges. Spread on baking sheet and spray with vegetable spray. Bake 6 min until light brown. Meanwhile, in a dry skillet, toast the cumin seeds (about 3 minutes). Sprinkle, along with salt, on top of baked tortilla chips. Cool slightly and serve with dip.

Chicken Breasts with red Bell Peppers and Poblano sauce

4 servings

4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves

1Tbs. olive oil, 1 Tbs. butter,

2 red bell peppers, roasted, peeled and seeded

1 c. grated Cotija cheese, salt and pepper to taste

Poblano Sauce:

½ c. chopped yellow onion

2 poblano chilies, roasted, peeled, seeded and diced

1 c. chicken stock

¼ c. heavy cream

Turn oven to Broil. Remove any fat from chicken breasts, lay them on board and cover with plastic wrap or waxed paper, pound them until they are ¼” thick. Heat medium-heated skillet, add olive oil, butter. Add chicken to hot pan, season with salt and pepper. Lower heat, cook until browned (3-4 min each side).

To prepare sauce:

Add onion and chiles to hot pan in which chicken was cooked, sauté until onions are translucent (about 5-7 minutes). Add chicken stock and cook over medium until reduced to ¾ cup. Transfer mixture to blender and puree. Add the sauce back to the pan and add the cream. Cook until warmed.

Transfer cooked chicken to baking sheet. Put single layer of peppers and top each piece evenly with Cotija cheese. Broil approx. 3-5 minutes, at 4” below heat, until cheese is lightly browned. Put chicken on serving plates and top with Poblano sauce. Serve immediately.

Polenta

Yield 6 servings

5 cups water, 1/4 cup heavy cream

2 T extra virgin olive oil, Freshly ground black pepper to taste

1 Cup polenta or stone ground cornmeal (polenta and cornmeal are the same)

4 oz cream cheese

In a large heavy saucepan bring salted water to boil. Add olive oil, cream, salt and pepper. Whisk constantly and pour the polenta into the water in steady stream until all is combined. Continue to whisk until you are sure there are no lumps. Reduce heat to low and cook 20 minutes, uncovering frequently to stir.

Stir in the cream cheese until creamy. Can add grated pecorino cheese, if desired.

1.) Walk your dog early in the morning or late at night. Since these are the cooler parts of the day, this will make the exercise more comfort-able for both you and your dog. I’m a believer in vigorous exercise for healthy dogs, but this is the time of year to back off on exercise intensity.

2.) Watch for signs of dehydration. Dogs can’t sweat. They cool off by panting, so an overheated dog will drool excessively. It will become lethargic, its eyes will be bloodshot, and it may appear a little pale.

3.) Keep your dog hydrated! Different dogs have different needs when battling the heat. Keep in mind that darker coats absorb more heat than lighter coats. Also, overweight dogs are at higher risk for dehy-dration. Carry a bottle of water when going on a walk with your dog. Better yet have your dog carry it for you in a backpack or a vest! The water in the bottles will keep the dog cooler and also give the dog a sense of purpose.

4.) Find innovative ways to cool your dog. Find a spot in the shade and set up a kiddie’s pool. Lay down a wet towel for your dog to lie on. Or simply set up a fan in front of a pan of ice. Dogs cool from the bottom up. Make sure to spray the paws and stomach, not just the top of the dog, when spraying it with water. A wet towel does more good on the bottom of your dog than when laid on the top of its coat.

5.) Let your dog dig! Your dog may resort to finding his own way to avoid the heat. Dogs in nature dig their dens not out of frustration but to find food, hide, give birth--or keep cool! If it’s possible, locate a shady area where it’s okay for your dog to dig.

6.) Let your dog check the weather. Dogs don’t have the Weather Channel, so they don’t know why they are being denied a long walk for the day. Allow your dog to step outside and feel for itself that it is too hot, too wet, or too cold to go on a long walk. Instinctually, the dog will understand that it has to shorten its walk, or simply come back inside where it’s safe.

7.) Never leave your dog in a parked car. The car retains more heat than an open area, even if it is in the shade. Plus, a dog may get overexcited in the car due to passersby or panic from claustrophobia, making dehydration more likely. On longer trips, make sure you have water for the dog and keep the AC running.

8.) Use hot weather as an excuse to swim more often! The best activity you can do in hot weather is swimming. Instead of walking the dog, take the dog on a swim! If you hold on and allow your dog to take you around the pool, it becomes a powerful bonding experience.

With record temperatures in Arizona, it is important to keep your dogs in mind when it comes to keeping cool.

You’ve probably heard about the importance of watching our kids around water at least once or twice, maybe even a hundred times. But statistics of drowning each year in our state war-rants the need for consistent reminders of ways to remain safe when enjoying one of summer’s greatest activities, swimming. If you’re plan-ning an outing around the pool, or a nearby lake this summer, you’ll want to keep the following tips in mind.

• Obtain swimming lessons for children at an early age. Swimming skills are essential for Arizona children who plan to spend hot sum-mer days in the pool. Besides learning to float, tread water and exit the water properly, swim students will build physical strength, gain good mental judgment and emergency reaction skills necessary to help them remain safe during a swim.

• Never, ever leave children unattended. Even if they’re swimming like a fish after a series of lessons, it’s not enough to rely simply on skills children learned in swimming classes. Even if submersion is just in a wading pool, an adult should always be no more than an arm’s length away from young toddlers and children. It only takes one major gulp of water to permanently injure an infant or toddler.

• Use adequate safety devices. Life jackets or PFD (personal floatation device) are essential for children and parents when riding in boats, especially in swift moving water. Begin utilizing PFD’s on toddlers playing around water at a very young age. The earlier in life that a child is introduced to safety devices, the easier it will be for them to accept the concept throughout childhood and into adulthood. Parents can set an example for their children by wearing the PFD equipment with boat and water usage, especially in and around bodies of water that are swift moving or contain sudden drop offs, rocks or debris. In other words, don’t just enforce the fact that the devices help protect children-show them why PFD’s are needed for adults too.

Adequate PFd (Personal Floatation devices):

Blow-up floaties and arm water wings are not adequate to save a child’s life in a true emergency. A properly fitted PFD or life jacket should contain chest and leg straps, along with a head support. Manufacturers make PFDs according to a person’s size and weight, so, when it is fitted properly it will help to keep your head above water. If it’s too large, the life jacket will ride up around your face when you are in the water. If it is too small, it will not have enough flotation to keep you afloat.

What does drowning look like?

Unlike what you may have seen in the movies, you won’t see an actual drowning victim splashing, nor will you see flying arms or hear yells for help from someone who is truly drowning. Those indicators are a sure sign of someone in need of immedi-ate assistance. This stage of stress is called aquatic stress. However, a real drowning person would appear calm, eerily calm. If you’ve spotted a child, or adult, that is experiencing aquatic stress, make sure you call out for help, before jumping in after them.

Remember:

• A drowning person is physiologically unable to call out for help.

• Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces a victim to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water’s surface, in order to leverage their bodies to lift their mouths to the water’s surface.

• Someone who is drowning cannot voluntarily control their arm movements, which includes waving or reaching out for a piece of rescue equipment.

• Generally, someone drowning can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20-60 seconds before submersion occurs.

• If you are not moving certain items, or only want certain

items moved, identify these items with a piece of blue

painters tape.

• With blue painters tape, identify where the large items of

furniture are to be placed, and where the open areas are

where the movers can place the boxes.

• Identify rooms by writing on blue painters tape: Master

bedroom, Guest room, Girls room, etc.

• Keep necessary items such as prescription pills, purses,

wallets, jewelry, fire arms, and valuables locked in your

care during the move.

Every parent knows the dreaded summertime chant, “I’m so bored!” Families at Estrella can breathe a little easier since there’s always fun to be had at the Youth Club at Starpointe. The club offers children ages ten and up a cool place to hangout – and of course younger children are welcome; just make sure they are accompanied by an adult. Fully equipped with pool tables, air hockey, foosball, ping pong, karaoke, PS3, Xbox and Wii, as well as full size arcade games, it’s a great place for our younger residents to play and meet other kids…free of charge! The club also features a lounge area and “happening” disco ball. Residents should be on the lookout for special events being held at the Youth Club such as dances and video game tournaments.

High Schoolers can get involved by participating on the new Estrella Teen Council. This committee will help determine what the younger generation wants out of their community and Youth Club, and will host events and fundraisers throughout the summer and school year. SOJOURNER CENTER BENEFITS FROM RESIDENTS’ GENEROSITY

Estrella residents demonstrated their ongoing dedication to make a difference, and help those in need, with the “Supplies for Sojourner Center” drive. The partnership with Sojourner Center was part of Estrella’s continued support of HomeAid America. The drive kicked off the first project of its newest program, HomeAid on Wheels (HOW). HomeAid is the nation’s largest provider of temporary housing for the homeless. HOW provides a vehicle for HomeAid to expand its reach by assisting nonprofits in communities not served by a local HomeAid chapter. The Sojourner Center is the largest domestic violence shelter in the United States, and serves more than 2,900 women and children annually. Estrella residents were able to meet a need within the organization by providing items that are necessary for Sojourner residents during the summer such as sunscreen, towels and flip-flops. In addition, residents included a blanket drive in their efforts after learning that upon entering the facility each family receives four twin blankets, and Sojourner Center had very few blankets left in stock. Newland is a longtime supporter of HomeAid, donating more than $600,000 in the past five years. Estrella and its residents are just as committed to giving back and funds raised from past Pumpkin Festivals made it possible to donate $15,000 to Sojourner Center.
