Did you know you have more than 600 muscles in your body? They do everything from pumping blood throughout your body to helping you lift your heavy backpack. You control some of your muscles, while others — like your heart — do their jobs without you thinking about them at all.

Playing Makes MusclesIt sounds too simple, but it's true. Playing, running, jumping, and riding your bike can make your muscles stronger. Any physical activity you like to do - from dancing to playing football - can make you stronger. Why? Because you're using your muscles when you do it.Eat StrongWhat should you eat if you want strong muscles? You might think you need a lot of foods that contain protein(such as meat and eggs) or foods that contain iron. But there's no one magical food that helps build muscles. Your muscles - and your entire body - will be strong and healthy if you eat a variety of nutritious foods

Your heart is located a little to the left of the middle of your chest, and it's about the size of your fist.

Your heart is sort of like a pump, or two pumps in one. The right side of your heart receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side of the heart does the exact opposite: It receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out to the body. The heart sends blood around your body. The blood provides your body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs.

Before each beat, your heart fills with blood. Then its muscle contracts to squirt the blood along. When the heart contracts, it squeezes — try squeezing your hand into a fist. That's sort of like what your heart does so it can squirt out the blood. Your heart does this all day and all night, all the time. The heart is one hard worker!

How Does the Heart Beat?

Keep Your Heart Happy

Remember that your heart is a muscle. If you want it to be strong, you need to exercise it. Be active in a way that gets you huffing and puffing, like jumping rope, dancing, or playing basketball. Try to be active every day for at least 30 minutes to an hour a

•Eat a variety of healthy foods and avoid foods high in unhealthy fats, such as saturated fats and trans fats (reading the labels on foods can help you figure out if your favorite snacks contain these unhealthy ingredients).•Try to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day.•Avoid sugary soft drinks and fruit drinks.•Don't smoke. It can damage the heart and blood vessels.

Every single person has a skeleton made up of many bones. These bones give your body structure, let you move in many ways, protect your internal organs, and more. It's time to look at all your bones — A baby's body has about 300 bones at birth. These eventually fuse (grow together) to form the 206 bones that adults have.

How can I build strong bones?•Get a lot of physical activity, especially stuff like jumping and running.

•Feed your bones the calcium and vitamin D they need to stay strong. That means getting your share of milk and other calcium-rich foods and drinks, such as broccoli and calcium-fortified orange juice.

Between your wrists, hands, and all your fingers, you've got a grand total of 54 bones — all ready to help you grasp things, write your name, pick up the phone, or throw a softball!

Your brain is made up of 5 parts…

How do you remember the way to your friend's house? Why do your eyes blink without you ever thinking about it? Where do dreams come from? Your brain is in charge of these things and a lot more.In fact, your brain is the boss of your body. It runs the show and controls just about everything you do, even when you're asleep. Not bad for something that looks like a big, wrinkly, gray sponge.

1. Cerebrum or Forebrain (say: suh-ree-brum)

2. cerebellum (say: sair-uh-bell-um)3. brain stem4. pituitary gland (say: puh-too-uh-ter-ee

gland)5. hypothalamus (say: hy-po-thal-uh-mus

Be Good to Your Brain

•Eat healthy foods. They contain potassium and calcium, two minerals that are important for the nervous system.

•Get a lot of playtime (exercise).

•Wear a helmet when you ride your bike or play other sports that require head protection.

•Don't drink alcohol, take drugs, or use tobacco.

•Use your brain by doing challenging activities, such as puzzles, reading, playing music, making art, or anything else that gives your brain a workout!

Sleep gives your body a rest and allows it to prepare for the next day. It's like giving your body a mini-vacation. Sleep also gives your brain a chance to sort things out. Scientists aren't exactly sure what kinds of organizing your brain does while you sleep, but they think that sleep may be the time when the brain sorts and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems.

• The eye is about as big as a ping-pong ball and sits in a little hollow area (the eye socket) in the skull.

• Your eyes are at work from the moment you wake up to the moment you close them to go to sleep. They take in tons of information about the world around you — shapes, colors, movements, and more. Then they send the information to your brain for processing so the brain knows what's going on outside of your body.

• You can see that the eye's pretty amazing. So, come on —take a look at its many parts.

The eyes you have will be yours forever — treat them right and they'll never be out of sight

• The white part of the eyeball is called the sclera (say: sklair-uh). The sclera is made of a tough material and has the important job of covering most of the eyeball. Think of the sclera as your eyeball's outer coat. Look very closely at the white of the eye, and you'll see lines that look like tiny pink threads. These are blood vessels, the tiny tubes that deliver blood, to the sclera.

The cornea (say: kor-nee-uh), a transparent dome, sits in front of the colored part of the eye. The cornea helps the eye focus as light makes its way through. It is a very important part of the eye, but you can hardly see it because it's made of clear tissue. Like clear glass, the cornea gives your eye a clear window to view the world through.

The Iris Is The Colorful PartBehind the cornea are the iris, the pupil, and the anterior chamber. The iris (say: eye-riss) is the colorful part of the eye. When we say a person has blue eyes, we really mean the person has blue irises! The iris has muscles attached to it that change its shape. This allows the iris to control how much light goes through the pupil.

The pupil is the black circle in the center of the iris, which is really an opening in the iris, and it lets light enter the eye. To see how this works, use a small flashlight to see how your eyes or a friend's eyes respond to changes in brightness. The pupils will get smaller when the light shines near them and they'll open wider when the light is gone.

How You Can Keep Your Teeth Healthy

• Brush at least twice a day — after breakfast and before bedtime. Brushing properly breaks down plaque.Brush all of your teeth, not just the front ones.

• Take your time while brushing. Spend at least 2 or 3 minutes each time you brush. If you have trouble keeping track of the time, use a timer or play a recording of a song you like to help pass the time.

• Be sure your toothbrush has soft bristles (the package will tell you if they're soft). Ask your parent to help you get a new toothbrush every 3 months.

• Learn how to floss your teeth, which is a very important way to keep them healthy. It feels weird the first few times you do it, but pretty soon you'll be a pro. The floss gets rid of food that's hidden where your toothbrush can't get it, no matter how well you brush.

• You can also brush your tongue to help keep your breath fresh!

• Be careful about what you eat and drink. Remember, the plaque on your teeth is just waiting for that sugar to arrive. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink water instead of soda. And don't forget to smile!

• It's also important to visit the dentist twice a year. Besides checking for signs of cavities or gum disease, the dentist will help keep your teeth extra clean and can help you learn the best way to brush and floss.

Why Be Nice to Your Skin?Like the heart, and brain, your brain is an organ. In fact, it's the largest organ in your body, but it's still easy to take skin for granted. Skin has an important job to do.Your skin is constantly protecting you. Your skin keeps infections out of your body and keeps you from getting sick. When you take care of your skin, you're helping your skin do its job. And taking care of your skin today will help prevent future problems, like wrinkles and even skin cancer.

Clean Skin Is Happy SkinOne simple way to take care of your skin is to keep it clean. Showering and bathing daily or every other day is a good idea.Keeping your hands clean is especially important because your hands can spread germs to the skin on other parts of your body.
