Dear Friends and Neighbors, Your commitment and support during the last three-quarters of a century has

led to this year’s 75th birthday celebration of Betsy Johnson Hospital. What a momentous event in the history of Dunn, Harnett County and the surrounding areas. The hospital board of trustees, the physicians and staff, and I all thank you for your ongoing support as we work to bring you quality health services with compassionate care.

We also want to thank the extended Johnson Family for their 75 years of constant and invaluable involvement with the hospital. Since day one, when Nathan M. Johnson, Sr. made a generous donation to start the first hospital in Dunn, the Johnson Family has been part of the picture in many ways working on committees and boards, providing financial support, and being a positive voice for the hospital in the community.

Their unbroken support is a testament to their devotion to providing quality healthcare to area citizens honoring the legacy started by Nathan M. Johnson, Sr. His desire to honor his mother, Betsy Johnson, is the reason for the name of the hospital today.

Genuine thanks also go to all past and present board chairs, trustees, Friends Fighting Cancer, volunteers, foundation board members and many supportive community leaders. These talented and dedicated people have given countless hours of work to better the hospital. They provide services which would otherwise cost thousands of dollars, but more importantly, they add even more compassion and warmth to the hospital environment. We recognize them as vital members of the healthcare team.

As the anchor for Harnett Health System, Betsy Johnson Hospital’s 75th birthday shines a spotlight on healthcare in our area. Harnett County is an underserved area for healthcare, and there is a great need for more access to quality healthcare for our citizens. Harnett Health System has taken on the challenge to provide additional access to quality healthcare for our friends and neighbors.

We are excited to announce the Central Harnett Hospital will open its doors as a full service hospital near Lillington on January 18, 2013. This $56 million hospital will provide access to healthcare as well to Western and Northern Harnett County addressing the rapidly growing population in the area.

Harnett Health System is making great efforts to assure you easy access to quality family physicians or specialists for your primary and secondary healthcare needs. Building on the 137 physicians we have today, HHS is implementing its plans to recruit 48 more primary and specialty physicians. In addition to the five locations for physician offices today, Harnett Health will locate these new physicians throughout the area so you will have quick access to many specialities in their offices near your homes.

Please join us on Saturday, September 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate the cornerstone of our community, Betsy Johnson Hospital. We’ll have entertainment, health screenings, tours of the hospital and more! Everyone is welcome. I look forward to seeing you on the 29th. Happy Birthday Betsy Johnson Hospital, and we wish you many more!

Remembering Our PastBetsy Johnson Hospital is celebrating a 75-year tradition of compassion, care

and community support. Founded in 1937, the hospital was made possible by an

anonymous donation from a Dunn citizen who had a vision for local healthcare.

The donor wanted quality care for people regardless of race, creed, color or

ability to pay.

The original three-story facility named Dunn Hospital, Inc. was built on North Ellis Avenue. The hospital grew

to 85 beds, and by 1956 an expansion was greatly needed. The original anonymous donor once again made

a contribution for the expansion project and was convinced by hospital board members that Dunn Hospital’s

name should be changed and the donor’s identity

be made known. In December 1956, the hospital’s

name was changed to Betsy Johnson Memorial

Hospital in memory of the mother of the sole

donor – Nathan M. Johnson, Sr., a prominent Dunn

businessman. Throughout the hospital’s journey, the

Johnson Family has been a constant source of highly

appreciated support.

By the early 1960s more beds were needed, and the

decision was made to build a new 115-bed facility on

a 35-acre tract of land. The new hospital opened

in 1968 on Tilghman Drive. During the 1970s and

1980s the hospital aggressively recruited physicians and updated its

services including physical therapy and respiratory therapy and added a day-surgery department, a CT scanner,

a mammography unit, ultrasound services, stress testing and echocardiography services. In 1996, Betsy Johnson

Memorial Hospital was transferred to a private, not-for-profit organization and placed under the authority of

a board of trustees to allow for expanded services, and the name was changed to Betsy Johnson Regional

Hospital. Nine years later, the hospital entered into a management agreement with WakeMed Health & Hospitals,

creating “Harnett Health System.” The new not-for-profit health system would allow expanded access to care

in Harnett County and would be locally-owned, operated and directed by a 13-member board with citizen

representation from across Harnett County.

Building Our Future

Today, Harnett Health System (HHS) has more than 750 employees and 140 physicians on the medical staff in

14 specialties. To expand access to care, the system employs 11 physicians and 6 physician assistants (PA-C)

and licensed nurse practitioners (LPN) working in five medical practices: Angier Medical Services, Dunn Medical

Services, Lillington Medical Services, Harnett OB/GYN and Premiere Pediatrics. In addition to Betsy Johnson

Hospital, Harnett Health System has a breast care center, cardiac rehabilitation, and rehab/wellness facilities.

Since 2005, Harnett Health System has invested $63 million in a new five-story inpatient tower, an expanded

emergency department, new operating rooms, a renovated pediatric wing, new heart monitoring technology,

new MRI and CT scanner, electronic medical records system and the addition of 200 positions. Building upon

a great history of growing services, Harnett Health System is forging ahead with the building of the $56 million

Central Harnett Hospital, a full-service, 50-bed hospital in the Brightwater Park outside Lillington, N.C. that will

open in January 2013.

The new facility will increase economic development and

access to healthcare in Harnett County. The two-story,

122,500 square-foot hospital is the single largest capital

project in the county’s history. Central Harnett Hospital

will include a 24-hour emergency department, three

surgery suites, minor procedure room, telemetry beds,

imaging, MRI, and cardiovascular diagnostics. Harnett

Health System is finishing the recruitment of additional

physicians in multiple specialties including Orthopedics,

Cardiology, ENT, General Surgery, OB/GYN, Radiology,

ER, Hospitalists, Urology, Family Practice, Internal

Medicine, and Pathology.

“Betsy Johnson Hospital is committed to being the acute care facility in our region where services are provided

in a caring environment and in a manner that reflects quality, innovation and value,” said Harnett Health System

President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Bryan. “Every day our employees provide highly personalized

healthcare with respect and compassion. We want to be the area’s hospital of choice for primary and secondary

healthcare services. As we celebrate the 75th birthday of Betsy Johnson Hospital, we also look forward to many

more years of compassion, care and community support.”

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” - Mother TeresaFor most, the reason for giving begins at home. We want outstanding care for our loved ones. Most of us, or someone we love, have been cared for by our local hospital. Through the Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital Foundation, a part of Harnett Health System, you can invest to ensure outstanding care is available to all who live, work, and visit our area.

You might ask, “Why does the Foundation exist?” Funding from government and private insurance programs provides essential health services but it cannot pay for everything. The Foundation’s role is to fill the gap, to provide a personal touch for patients with extraordinary need and to expand access to care.

The Foundation has continued to inform the citizens of Harnett County of its mission. Chairman T.C. Godwin reflects, “It’s not so much about the money, but where the money goes and how it’s used to treat patients. I take pride in the work the Foundation has done to better healthcare in our area.”

The Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital Foundation continues to support and encourage compassionate patient care by helping purchase advanced technologies and equipment in its facilities.

Harnett Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Bryan added, “We continue the mandate set by Nathan M. Johnson, Sr. when he gave the first donation to start the hospital – to provide quality care for people regardless of race, creed, color, or ability to pay. Seventeen percent of the care provided at Betsy Johnson Hospital is free to residents who need it. We are a safety net for people in our area, and we need your support to be able to meet Mr. Johnson’s vision and to continue to provide healthcare for you and all area residents.”

The Foundation provides various ways to make a donation and will work with donors to offer the best alternative including the options of one-time donations and multi-year pledges for specific projects or equipment purchases, and/or the establishment of scholarships.

Harnett Health System employees at Betsy Johnson Hospital, Central Harnett Hospital, our physician practices, and our cardiac rehabilitation center are committed to serving you. By making a generous donation to the Annual Benefit Weekend, you will be helping to improve the quality of healthcare for our children and our families for generations to come.

The Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, and all contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law. Consult your tax advisor for more information.
