MY EVALUATION OF APPEALING TO SOCIAL GROUPS

Page 2: My Evaluation of Appealing to Social Groups

My opening sequence represents members of the police force as well as

criminal’s and gangs. The representation of gang members in my opening

sequence is minimal as the audience don’t meet the members or head of the

gang until halfway through the narrative. This means that I will not target social groups lower down the socio economic

scale directly through my casting of characters. Although I will mainly be

targeting and appealing to my audience through their interests. For example my targeted audience is mixed of both male and female, therefore I am targeting a

male audience through my use of violence and darker themes whilst my

female audience are being attracted by the independent female character. My

main character is represented as a strong willed woman who used to work with the police. This therefore means

that through the casting of my character and development of the narrative I have created a positive representation that my female audience can use as a role

model.

The way working women are portrayed is done in order to help my female audience associate with the feelings and thoughts of my main character. Sarah is made to

look tired and deflated before she hears a thud at which point she becomes alert and on-point. Her

movements almost become bionic as she makes her way upstairs in the hope of catching the intruder. At

this point in my opening sequence my female audience should feel a sense of pride in the knowledge that

Sarah shows no fear in facing the intruder, It is clear she is trying to be discreet although not timid as she

searches the bedroom. This representation I have created through casting my characters only helps to enhance my film’s reputation as my female audience are satisfied with the way women are represented.I have also targeted a mainstream audience which

means my methods of distribution must conform to the traditional value chain of distribution. For example

many mainstream films are first released in cinema’s then after a few months to online sites like Netflix

where my audience can pay for membership in order to consume my media products, by which point my film would have been introduced to the DVD platform. My targeted audience follow this mainstream method and

as a result when choosing my distributor I had to ensure I chose an institution that understood the

method and how I can appeal to my audience effectively. Therefore the way I will distribute my

product will also affect how it appeals to my targeted audience as the majority of my audience will consume

film products through the cinema.

Finally I have used aspects of Mise En Scene in order to appeal to my

audience. Using aspects like Lighting I have effectively managed to capture

my audience’s attentions and make my opening sequence realistic. Low Key Lighting has helped me to reduce my audience’s field of vision and make them feel helpless in their position.

This therefore has proved effective as my audience feel involved in the search

for the intruder. Sound has also been used in order to ensure my audience don’t lose interest at crucial points during my opening sequence, for

example in the kitchen as Sarah grabs a knife and begins to walk out of the

shot. This means that my audience are attracted by the haunting prospect that

they feel as though they are in the house alongside my main character.

Using editing techniques I have managed to build on tension within my

film which means that my audience move with my main character through

the house and consequently feel tangled within the narrative alongside

Sarah.
