• With an ambitious target set for 2022, Renewable energy sources

will inject large amounts of power into the grid.

• This shift in generation portfolios will have profound effects on

the operation of the grid, which will in turn affect the operation

of Renewable Energy resources themselves as well as the

operation of other resources and equipment connected to the

grid.

175 GW

Wind and solar generation both experience intermittency, a combination of non-controllable

variability and partial unpredictability, and depend on resources that are location-dependent:

Introduction: Requirement

Introduction: Requirement Pure Grid Tie Inverters: Is it time to ease up?

1. Inverter Shuts down when grid is out: This occurs due to anti-islanding feature

of all grid tied inverters. In a power deficient country like India where the Grid is unreliable and power outages are frequent, Grid-Tie Inverter will not work to give electricity even when the sun is shining.

2. Cannot Guarantee 24x7 Electricity: As there is no storage, it can only be useful

during the daytime and the consumer will be powerless during a brownout if there is no DG Set.

3. NO SAVINGS ON DIESEL: DG SETS need to be run daily ; same as before , so no savings

on diesel costs and pollution too.

4. Poor DG utilisation:Running on lesser loads results in carbon buildup and internal glazing

within the DG set and greatly reduces its life and performance

5. Puts Pressure on DISCOMs: DISCOMs are forced to sign a PPA to buy the units that

the consumer is selling on the DISCOMs infrastructure

• Variability in the context of wind and

solar resources refers to the fact that

their output is not constant.

• As can be seen from the two graphs

shown here, the values fluctuate

wildly very high level of predictability

is required to prepare the

conventional source of power

accordingly.

Introduction: Requirement

• Frequency Regulation

• Spinning Reserves

• Black-start Capacity

• Tracking Loads

• Voltage/VAR Control And Regulation

• Fault Ride-through

• Active Power Control, Ramping And Curtailment

• Primary Frequency Regulation

• Load Shifting

• Demand-side Balancing Services

A system that integrates renewable energy sources into the grid should require some characteristics to regulate the power as required

Page 14: My Electricity, Smart Electricity: A local approach · © 2016 Statcon Energiaa | CONFIDENTIAL 1 Statcon Energiaa: Rooftop solar solutions My Electricity, Smart Electricity: A local

14 © 2016 Statcon Energiaa | CONFIDENTIAL Statcon Energiaa: Rooftop solar solutions

• Energy storage, due to its tremendous range of uses and configurations, may assist RE integration in any number of ways. In India, the more popular form of energy storage medium is the electrical Battery

• Now we have established that the grid integration of renewable storage is an absolute must:

Question remains whether storage will be centralised or

distributed?

Introduction: Requirement

• The current favoured solution to all the requirements mentioned previously, is the Electrical Energy Storage solution or the EES as it is more commonly referred.

PROS:

1. Single party owned renewable energy storage based container solution

2. The same party will take care of its operation and maintenance

3. Easier billing as only two parties will be majorly involved. One net meter to measure the

incoming and outgoing units out of the container system.

4. Can be strategically placed throughout the smart cities: for e.g.: Each sector can have

one, each major market area, apartment clusters, industrial areas etc.

Centralised Storage

Centralized storage systems tend to be larger units, in a smaller number, and connected to the transmission network at strategic points.

CONS

1. Large initial CAPEX leading to the question of Who will pay the huge initial capital

expenditure required for the battery container system, Power electronics as well as the Solar

PV System(or any other renewables)

2. Life of battery will not be as much as claimed by the manufacturers, due to frequent

charge/discharge cycles through the day.

3. The container system will not be useful in case of a power blackout. Neither the power nor

the battery backup will be sufficient to power the requirements of the whole intended area.

4. DISCOM will have to sign a power purchase agreement or PPA guaranteeing purchase of a

minimum number of units per month even if the requirement arises or not. Otherwise the

installer may never be able to fully recover their costs profitably

Distributed Storage

• Distributed ESSs can be described as numerous small on-site storage systems, connected to the edge of the network.

• Decentralised or distributed energy storage refers to such systems connected to the low or medium voltage grid. They are installed close to load centres, renewable generation sources, on distribution feeder circuits or at consumer premises behind the meter.

Energiaa HBD Inverter: Distributed ESS

PROS:

1. Ownership of the System will be with the small end user directly, usually between the

range of 5KWH to 200KWH

2. DISCOMs will not be needed to guarantee the number of units purchased. They will

instead communicate to the system directly when to charge and when to discharge from

the grid dynamically and PPA will be signed accordingly.

3. Individual rooftops will be owned by the user themselves thus space issue is resolved. My

Electricity, my house.

4. Hybrid Inverter technology nowadays readily available which will communicate with the

DISCOMs like BSES in Delhi and use the home’s battery system to regulate the grid.

Load Levelling

CONS:

Major Issue with this type of system would be the complicated Power purchase agreements with dynamic pricing, energy markets, discounts, load management and to educate the large population regarding this.

Conclusion: Meri Bijli Mere Ghar

Following the trend of utilities in countries which have already gone through these challenges, let us

prepare ourselves for what we know is inevitable and help the Government form a policy with the

industry regarding the Storage based grid integration of Renewables.
