Creative Thinking

By Prasad Mahajan

Page 2: my ED presentation

• What is Creativity? Creativity is the ability to come up with ideas that

are new, surprising, and valuable. To get such ideas, we need a way of looking

at problems or situations from a fresh perspective that suggests unorthodox solutions (which may look unsettling at first) which is called Creative Thinking.

Models of brain and creativity

• Freud’s model• Brian dominance theory• Computational model

Page 5: my ED presentation

Freud’s model of mind • Conscious mind : Does current thinking and object of attention

without long term information storage.• Pre-conscious mind : Stores information for long time.• Sub-conscious mind: It has a will and purpose of its own that cannot

be known to the conscious mind, and responsible for wishes or desires, traumatic memories, and painful emotions.

Brain dominance theory

• Gives relationship between right hemisphere and left hemisphere

• Left hemisphere handles information in analytical, rational, logical, sequential way.

• Right hemisphere function by recognize relationships, observing information in intuitive way.

• Best creativity is achieved with good communication between these two.

Page 7: my ED presentation

Computational model• Comparison is done between computer’s power vs brain

power on how well to process information.• Computers:

– More information processing capacity– Comparative low storage of information

• Human mind:– Low information processing capacity– Vast subliminal store of information– Superior in aspect of cognition– More input devise which are processed constantly– Can make more associations

Steps to enhance creative thinking

• Develop an creative attitude• Unlock your imagination• Be persistent• Develop an open mind• Suspend your judgment• Set problem boundaries

Barriers to creative thinking(mental block)

• J.L.ADAM’s Mental Blocks:– Perpetual block– Emotional block– Cultural block– Intellectual block– Environmental block

Page 10: my ED presentation

J.L.ADAM’s Mental Blocks:1. Perpetual block: – Stereotyping– Information overload– Limiting problem unnecessarily– Fixation– Provision of cues

2. Emotional block:– Fear of risk taking– Unease with chaos– Unwilling to incubate– motivation

J.L.ADAM’s Mental Blocks:

3. Cultural block:4. Intellectual block:– Poor choice of problem solving language– Memory block– Insufficient knowledge

5.Enviromental block:– Physical environment– Criticism

Page 12: my ED presentation

Von Oech’s Ten Mental Blocks:

1. The right answer2. That’s not logical3. Follow the rules4. Be practical5. Play is frivolous6. That’s not my area7. Don’t be foolish8. Avoid ambiguity9. To err is wrong10. I’m not creative
