My Culture Cajun

FoodCajuns are known for our spicy hot food like
gumbo, my favorite, and jambalaya.

Music
Cajun music is different from any other. Cajun music is upbeat and the focus is on the accordion.
“Let the Good Times Roll”
Language My family speaks English and a little French,
while my grandparents speak both languages. Our older generations spoke mainly Cajun French.
ClothingI wear regular name brands like Under
Amour, Hurley, and Hollister.
HolidaysCajuns celebrate Mardi Gras which means
Fat Tuesday. It’s a day full of parades, music, and festivities to start off our Lenten season.
HousingWe live in a single story house with a Country
French style. It is filled with bits and pieces of our Louisiana life style.
ArtPaul Rodrique’s Blue Dog paintings are
famous to our Cajun culture.
LiteratureMy sister, who lives in Plano, is trying to get
her children's books published. The books are about an alligator named Chompston living in a Cajun swamp with his friends.
ReligionThe majority of Cajuns, including my family
are Catholic.
Ethic/Racial BackgroundMy family is Cajun-French and American.
Daily life/RoutineI go to school, eat supper, watch TV, and go
to bed.
Family HistoryMy ancestors came from the south
of France. The Broussard families of Louisiana
trace their ancestry to two Acadian brothers, Joseph and Alexandre, also called Beausoleil, who arrived in New Orleans in 1765.
In Louisiana, we learned how to live off the land by fishing and hunting.
GovernmentUnlike all other states, Louisiana has
Parishes instead of counties. There is one President for each Parish.
Family TraditionsEvery Christmas Eve, my
family reads “The Cajun Night Before Christmas.”
