About Us

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib was established in 1993 by Baba Banda Singh Bahadur

Education Trust formed under the patronage of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee with the approval of the Govt. of

Punjab.

The college is approved by A.I.C.T.E., New Delhi, Ministry of H.R.D., Govt. of India and is affiliated to Punjab Technical

University, Jalandhar. The college has earned accreditation by AICTE for various programmes. The college started with

B.Tech. programs in Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Mechanical

Engineering with an intake of 30 students in each. Presently, college runs five B.Tech. Programs and one M.Tech. program

with the total intake of 498.

The college is situated in an environment conducive to academics. It is housed in a sprawling pollution free campus of 175

acres and is located in the sacred surroundings of historic Gurdwaras of Fatehgarh Sahib. The college is named after Baba

Banda Singh Bahadur, a great saint and a warrior, who conquered the Sirhind fort and laid to rest the tyranny of Mughal

Empire.

BBSBEC has also been accredited by IEI. It is one of the leading Institutions in Engineering & Technology and is the most

sought after for admission by the students. The college has been adding a few B.Tech. programs every academic session.

BBSBEC has made a significant presence in the Techno-Educational field at international level.

More than Rupees 50 crores have been spent on buildings and equipment alone of this gigantic project. The Governing Body

of the institute, constituted as per the model constitution of AICTE, has nominees of the college Trust, AICTE, State

Government (Directorate of Technical Education) and Punjab Technical University. The President Trust & SGPC is the

Chairman (ex-officio) of the Governing Body .

The college has a sprawling pollution free campus spread over 175 acres of land in the heart of Fatehgarh Sahib. Fatehgarh Sahib has an ideal geographical location with the proximity to three important cities of the region i.e. Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Patiala. The college is located at 5 kilometres from Sirhind Railway Station, 42 kilometres from Chandigarh, 65 kilometres from Ludhiana, 40 kilometres from Roopnagar and 35 Kilometres from Patiala.

The college has two beautiful and magnificent Administrative Blocks namely Panth Ratan Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Block, which houses well-designed airy lecture halls, library, tutorials rooms, well-furnished seminar halls, laboratories, computer centre, drawing halls and administrative offices.

The workshop block, which is really an architectural marvel, has 1500 square meters of covered area. All the requisite shops, as per the degree requirements, for all the streams of engineering, are available and are equipped with modern equipments. The workshop block houses: Machine Shop, Welding Shop, Carpentry Shop, Fitting Shop, Foundry Shop and Smithy Shop.

A centrally Air-Conditioned marvelous and state-of-art auditorium is constructed with seating capacity of 750 persons. It is named after the great Sikh Scholar Giani Dit Singh Ji. It provides ideal environment to conduct extracurricular activities in the college. Auditorium is equipped with 6000 lumens multimedia projector and theater grade audio system for screening of movies and for organization of cultural programs and concerts.

The college has five well-designed and well-equipped air-conditioned seminar halls. These seminar halls serve as a platform for conducting various lectures/seminars of prominent personalities from industrial as well as academic background. The seminar halls are equipped with multimedia projectors, high quality sound systems, over head projectors, computers and internet access.

Sufficient accommodation for faculty as well as staff is available in the form of 12 A-class, 24 B-Class , 32 C-Class and 8 D-Class flats.

To improve the pedagogy, college has recently set up twelve digital classrooms. These classrooms are equipped with multimedia projectors, computer and internet connectivity. Faculty makes use of power point presentations, electronic boards, audio and video clips for making the teaching and learning more effective and contemporary.

The College has its own Electrical Sub Station of 500KVA. In order to ensure uninterrupted power supply, college has two diesel generators with capacity of 150 KVA and 320 KVA.

The college has one well equipped dispensary to provide medical facility to students and staff.

A state-of-art Student Center, provides students with a place to interact with during off hours. It comprises a spacious Canteen, a Fruit Shop, a PCO and a Cyber Café. The Student Center is an architectural marvel and an icon building in the college.

A beautiful Guest House with all the modern facilities is available in the college campus. Guest House has eight well furnished rooms, a dining hall and beautiful lawns. Wireless network facility is also available in the Guest House.

To provide facility of indoor games like Chess, Table Tennis and Badminton to the students, an international standard gymnasium named after Nawab Sher Mohammad Khan has been constructed, wherein modern equipment/machines for physical exercise have been installed, in addition to different play courts. For outdoor games, college sports complex comprises various grounds viz. Football, Volleyball, Cricket, Hockey, Kabaddi, Lawn Tennis, Basketball, Handball ground and a 400-meter Athletic Track.

An international standard in door swimming pool is nearing completion and is likely to be completed by July 2008.

To provide better sports facilities to the players and seating facility to the spectators for watching sports events comfortably, a beautiful sports stadium has been built in the college campus.

The college has sufficient arrangement for residential students with three hostels for boys namely Baba Baaz Singh Hostel, Baba Binod Singh Hostel and Baba Ajay Singh Hostel having capacity to accommodate 625 students. All the hostels have been provided with wireless internet access.

100% hostel accommodation is available for the girl students in the two girls hostels viz. Mata Sahib Kaur Hostel and Bibi Bhani Hostel with a capacity of 250 students each. Internet facility has been provided to the girl students through campus wireless access network.

Academic Programs

Students are admitted to the college on the basis of CET merit for the 85% Punjab State Quota and on the basis of AIEEE merit for the 15% other State Quota. 80% of the total seats are filled through the central counseling conducted by PTU, while 20% management quota seats are filled by the college. In addition to the statutory reservations made by the state government, the college has reservation for rural area candidates as well as for Sikh minority community students. The statutory reservations are given in detail in the PTU Information Brochure.

70% of the state quota seats shall be filled by the students hailing from rural area in Punjab. Rural area means area located outside the limits of Municipal Corporation, Municipal Committee, notified area committee, Cantonment Board, Township & University campus. A student hailing from rural area means:I) His/ her parents are permanently residing in the rural area as defined above.II) He/ she has studied for a minimum period of 5 years from a recognized/affiliated school located in rural area.III) He/ she has passed 5/8/10 or 10+2 from a school/ college located in rural area. Sons/Daughters of Defence Personnel/ Ex-

Defence personnel residing permanently in rural area exempted from clause (ii) & (iii)The reservation policy of Punjab Government shall apply to this category as well. Students not claiming Rural Area and without the prescribed certificate shall be considered only under Urban Area.

As per the Government of Punjab Notification No.13/129/2003-1TE2/1030 dated 5.4.2004, there is “Management Quota” to the tune of 33-1/3% (one third of the total seats). Out of the “Management Quota” a maximum of 5% of the total sanctioned seats shall be filled from amongst Non-Residing Indian (NRI)/ persons of Indian Origin (PIO)/ Foreign National Students and other related categories, in accordance with the procedure stipulated in the PTU Information Brochure. The Trust has however decided to fill only 20% of seats through Management Quota admission process and admission to the rest of the seats shall be through central counseling conducted by PTU, Jalandhar. The Management shall fill these seats purely on merit in accordance with the following order of preference:i) Merit in Common Entrance Test-2008ii) Merit in All India Engineering Entrance Examination-2008iii) Marks secured in the qualifying examination (PCM)

Schedule of counseling for admission to these seats an advertisement will be published in leading newspapers (English and Punjabi). The fee for “Management Quota” seats shall be the same as for ”State Quota” seats.

The institute has reservation under Sikh Minority Quota for 50% of the seats. This reservation is for the candidates appearing in CET-2008 conducted by Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar or AIEEE or Qualifying exam and wish to take admission in this college under this category. However they are required to pass an examination on Sikh Religion to be held on June 15, 2008 (Sunday) at the following three Centers:

A candidate will be eligible for admission by securing minimum 36% marks in the religious test. Admission will however be made on the basis of CET-2008/AIEEE-2008/Qualifying exam merit. Candidate desirous of appearing in this test must report at BBSB Engg. College, Fatehgarh Sahib with the following documents during any working day from 2-6-2008 to 13-6-2008. Roll numbers will be issued on the spot:

A) Affidavit under personal oath mentioning that “I belong to Sikh religion, abide by principles of Sikhism, have faith in Ten Sikh Gurus and Sri Guru Granth Sahib, maintain complete Sikh appearance (“Sikh Saroop”) wear Turban (only for male candidates), do not cut hair, do have word Singh/Kaur suffixed with the name and do not believe in any other Sect”, should be duly attested by Judicial Magistrate/Oath Commissioner.

B) Photocopy of Admit Card of CET /AIEEE/result of qualifying examC) Three photographs.D) Cash/DD of Rs. 400/- in favor of Coordinator (SRE) payable at Fatehgarh Sahib/ Sirhind.

In case the name of the candidate does not include “Singh/Kaur”, the candidate will have to submit the cutting of the Newspaper carrying the advertisement for the change of the name.The rules and regulations regarding admission and reservation are as per Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar instructions. The students can refer to CET-2008 Admission Brochure published by Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar for admission and detailed reservation policy of the college.

The duration of Bachelor of Technology course will be four years, divided into eight semesters. The duration of each semester will be 18 weeks, according to the following schedule:-

The eligibility criteria is 55% marks in B.Tech. from PTU or its equivalent in Mechanical/ Industrial/ Production/ Manufacturing/ Welding/ Material Science/ Metallurgy. The admission will be based on merit of average marks of 8 semesters of B.Tech. degree. The GATE qualified candidates will get preference. The distribution of seats is as under:General : 10Sponsored : 05SC/ST : 03The candidate seeking admission to sponsored category must submit a sponsorship certificate from his/ her employer. All candidates must attach a character certificate from the institution last attended, photocopies of B.Tech. Degree/ DMCs and three passport-size photographs. The fee and other charges are as prescribed by PTU and as applicable from time to time. The fee and other charges once deposited are not refundable/ transferable.

The University examination shall be held, at the end of each semester, as per the prescribed scheme of examination for each discipline and date sheet notified by the University.

Classes are held for a minimum of 90 days in each semester. Classes may be arranged on Saturday/ Sunday or other holidays to make 90 days if it is not otherwise possible to meet the requirement. Each candidate is required to attend a minimum of 75% of the scheduled lectures/ tutorials/ practicals to be eligible to appear in examination of the subject. If a candidate fails to meet the requirements he/ she will be detained from appearing in the university examination(s) of that subject(s).

In case of theory courses, 60% evaluation is external (by the university) and 40% of awards are based on continuous evaluation. The external evaluation forms the End Semester University Examinations. Question papers of the university examinations are set by an external paper setter and the answer books/scripts are evaluated at university level. Internal evaluation is conducted by the subject teacher on basis of continuous evaluation of the student through class tests, seminars, home assignments and class work/ tutorials. A total of three Mid Semester Tests (MST) are conducted centrally by the college during each semester. Out of these, student performance in the best two tests is considered for award of internal/sessional marks. The distribution of internal awards is as follows.* 24 marks are assigned to class tests (best two out of three) * 10 marks are assigned to assignments and tutorial sheets * 6 marks are based on attendance.

In case of Practicals, 40% weightage is given to the end semester university examination and 60% to internal evaluation. The end semester practical examination is conducted by a board comprising one internal and one external examiner.

Students participation in various sports and cultural / literary activities is encouraged. Towards this the institute has policy of bearing the following costs :

All the students are required to dress up smartly while attending the college. Girl students are required to wear salwar, kameez with dupatta during the college hours. On special occasions and functions all students must wear the prescribed college blazer. Whenever the students go out to other colleges/universities to participate in any co-curricular or extra-curricular activity, or on placement interviews they must be in the prescribed college uniform, and must carry their identity card with them.

Student standing first/ second in their respective class are honoured at the Annual Convocation by awarding merit certificates and medals/ prizes. Only those students who pass in first attempt securing more than 70% marks are considered for merit certificates. Certificates/medals are also awarded to the students who excel in various sports and extra curricular activities.

The students, who bring name & fame to the institution at national and international level, are presented with Panth Rattan Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Award at the college convocation.

Half Tuition fee concession is given to the second one admitted of two real brothers/ sisters studying in the college. This is available as long as both are studying. The concession may be in the drawn in cases of indiscipline / being detained in more than one subject by either of the siblings. The students taking advantage of the fee concession will have to pass their all examinations in first attempt failing which he/ she will not be entitled for fee concession.

BBSBEC is proud to have as its alumni a group of over 5000 engineers, technologists, scientists, managers and entrepreneurs. The Institute, in its endeavour to strengthen the link with the alumni, has set an Alumni Office consisting of a dedicated team of staff members headed by Prof. Manpeet Kaur. The Alumni Office is further assisted by the Alumni Affaris Advisory Committee consisting of faculty members from each Deptt. / Centres and students. The Alumni Affairs Office at the college extends several facilities and services to the Alumni to continue and enhance their pleasant association with the Institute. Some of these are :

Industrial training is conducted as per the curriculum of the university during summer break every year. Six month industrial training is conducted as per PTU course study scheme. Industrial training and visits are organized by the Training & Placement Cell. Various banks have different schemes for providing loans to students for pursuing their studies. The students are advised to contact the following for details. Oriental Bank of Commerce, State Bank of India, State Bank of Patiala & Punjab National Bank, ICICI, HDFC, Punjab & Sind Bank.

Hard plastic identity cards are issued to the students after their admission. In case of loss of Identity card during the period of studies, a student is re-issued the identity card only on submission of copy of FIR registered in Police Station, along with a payment of Rs.100/-. All the students are required to wear their identity cards in a line yard printed with BBSBEC logo when ever they visit academic area, library and college functions. They are also required to wear their cards during placement drives and when representing the college in various competitions.

The Department of Applied Sciences is responsible for strengthening the fundamental aspects and developing the overall

personality of the aspiring engineers. The department can boast of its highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty. It is

well equipped with latest equipments/ instruments in its various laboratories.

The Institute can boast of well equipped fully air-conditioned communication skills lab, first of its kind in the colleges affiliated to

Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar. In the age of Information Technology, language forms the basis in science,

technology and management studies. Science can be learnt as a subject, whereas the art of communication should be

practiced, as a skill. So, a communication skills lab is a must in every institution.

Even brilliant students miss some of the best chances due to lack of good communication skills. So, Knowledge and

communication form the two sides of career, development and one’s fortune at large. Hence, good communication skills mean

good FORTUNE.

The communications skills lab is designed for listening and spoken practice and consists of individual booths for individual

students. The teacher can assess the students either individually, selectively or collectively through the teacher’s console. The

lab aims at improving the student’s oral abilities and imparts interview and discussion skills. Here, they can assess their own

performance with the help of audio recordings. This learning is supplemented by multimedia presentations using computers,

LCD, OHP and other audio visual aids.

This laboratory started functioning right from the beginning of the college. The laboratory is equipped with latest instruments

and peripherals are made freely available to the students. Apart from the basic experiments, Engineering Physics Lab has

separate Dark room for performing Holography and other laser optics related experiments.

The college has a spacious chemistry lab. The objective of the lab is to expose the students of I and II semester to the basic

fundamentals of Engineering Chemistry. This lab is well equipped with various types of digital instruments like colorimeter;

conduct meter, PH meter, electrical balance etc. The lab has a distillation plant, electric furnace, bomb calorimeter, electric

ovens etc. That is much more than required to meet the demand according to P.T.U. Syllabus.

Department has a fully air conditioned, state-of-art Numerical

Analysis lab, which is equipped with twenty computers and

software of MATLAB and MATHEMATICA. It provides the

students with all the necessary tools and means to acquire

mastery in the field of Numerical Analysis. Students do their

programming related to Engineering Mathematics in C and

C++ in this lab.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering was established in the year 1993. The department right from the inception has the privilege of getting ample funds for setting up the laboratories and other infrastructure. There has been a rapid growth in the infrastructure of the department since 1993 and since then there has been no looking back. Today, department can boast of one of the best computing facility in the region. The department of CSE & IT is ISO 9001:2000 certified and is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and Institute of Engineers(IEI). The whole team of Computer Science and Engineering & Information Technology Department is working with a sense of responsibility and dedication to excel and achieve success in this era of Computer Science. The department of CSE & IT offers a comprehensive curriculum from introductory level courses to graduate seminars and projects focusing on critical research areas. Apart from imparting conventional technical education and rich learning environment, emphasis is laid on co-curricular activities such as seminars, workshops, debates and quizzes to prepare students for highly competitive job market. The objective of the department is to provide knowledge of modern computing systems as well as sound theoretical background to meet evolving needs of students. Also the department aims at establishing strong relationship with the industry so as to bridge the gap between the academia and corporate sector. The department is committed to insure life long learning attitude among its students. The overall objective of the department is to make students understand their professional as well as ethical values. Department feels proud of its alumni employed in Public, Private and Educational sectors bringing good name to their alma mater. Department is also running M.Tech(CSE) part- time course with an intake of 25 students.

A state of the art, fully air-conditioned computer center has been established at an approximate cost of Rs.7 crores. College has its own mail server, web server, storage server hosted in the campus running on latest dual processors in Dell/IBM/HP servers. We have 300+ latest computers on Local Area Network. Computer center is equipped with two 80 KVA APC UPS to provide uninterrupted computing environment to the students and faculty. Computing infrastructure and facilities in the department are rated, to be best in the region. Following are some of the facilities/infrastructure available in the department.

To meet the storage requirements of the staff and students, Department of CSE and IT has setup data storage center with storage capacity of 5 Terabytes (TB) extendable to 20 TB. This Data storage center is equipped with latest Network Attached Storage Servers (NAS) from HP.

College has its own mail server and mail accounts are given to all the student and faculty. College maintains its own website which is hosted in the college itself. Two high end dual processor based dell servers are totally dedicated to these services.

To provide access to the central computing facilities and Internet throughout the campus, optical fiber based gigabit backbone campus wide area network has been implemented in the college. This network connects all the departments, hostels and faculty residences. Latest managed layer-3 and layer-2 switches and optical fiber physical medium has been used to implement this project which currently serves some 500+ nodes in the college. Wired network has been overlaid with the extensive wireless network consisting of 200 + 802.11b/g wireless access points.

College is connected to Internet through 5 Mbps (1:1) Full Duplex optical fiber leased line and this service is distributed throughout the campus through campus wide network.

College is member of the AICTE - INDEST program through which our students and faculty members can access around 120 reputed journals in various branches of engineering through web portal of IEEE i.e., w w w . i e e e x p l o r e . i e e e . o r g . Department has access to all the journals of the Science Direct as well.

Department has around 420+ branded desktop computers having latest configurations to satisfy the computing requirements for various laboratories and project work of students. High end workstations and servers have been made available for special applications like simulations and central computing in the department.

Almost all the major software required by students and researchers has been made available in the department. These includes all the major servers and desktop operating systems, databases, application software, MATLAB, CASE tools like Rational Rose and software development platforms. College is member of MSDN Academic Alliance program of Microsoft.

Apart from the central library, department of CSE and IT has set up a separate departmental library which houses advanced reference books to be used by the students and faculty members for project and research work. Previous project and training reports are also placed in this library for ready reference of the students. Some of the research work which doesn't infringe the copyright act has also been digitized and made available in this library.

Department of CSE and IT has tie up with Redhat India and Microsoft Corporation. Redhat India has promised to setup center of excellence in the department apart from training the faculty and students on Redhat technologies. Department has already tied up with CISCO to set up CCNA and Wireless Academy.

This center has been recently established with the purpose of in-house assembly of PC's and other equipment needed for computer center. This center also looks after the maintenance of the server farm, desktop machines, campus wide network and planning and implementation of new projects. This provides students with a unique opportunity of training in handling and assembling of computers and also troubleshooting of other problems. It also undertakes various software development projects.

The lab provides the students with a fairly good concept of the fundamentals of data structures and commonly occurring algorithms. It presents the general approach towards analyzing and evaluating and implementing the database algorithms.

This lab provides the exposure to use databases and build an RDBMS. For this, they are provided with the server based ORACLE software. To make them learn more effectively, students are given projects for implementation.

In this lab, students are trained in various networking technologies and given fair amount of exposure in design and implementation of networks. Extensive campus wide network provides real time experiment test bed for students to learn. Students are taught to design, implement, secure analysis and manage networks.

This lab makes the students understand the fundamental graphical operations and the implementation of algorithms behind computer graphics, including the operation on image processing. They also get a glimpse of recent advances in computer graphics.

This lab provides exposure to the students in various progamming languages like C, C++, Java and Prolog. Students get sufficient hands on practice to develop their programming skills.

This lab provides the basic knowledge of digital hardware components and trains the students in digital design and making them familiar with the CAD tools in digital system design.

The students are acquainted with the tools and techniques of Modelling Language (UML) and the approach being used in industry for software development with Rational Rose software.

This lab provides students with in-depth knowledge of data communication technologies. The Lab is equipped with latest data communication trainers, LAN trainers, simulators and test & measurement equipment.

Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering

Electronics & Communication Engineering Department was established in 1993 i.e. from the date of inception of the college, with an intake of 30 students. Within four years, the intake to this discipline grew to 60. Due to the excellent infrastructure, 30 more seats were sanctioned by AICTE in 2000 to increase the intake to 90. In 2006 the intake was further increased to 120. Apart from offering undergraduate programmes in Electronics & Communication Engineering, the Department is also running part time M.Tech. ( Electronics & Communication Engineering). The department has well-established laboratories with latest facilities. A number of Short Training programmes, Seminars and conferences have been conducted in the past. The department obtained ISO 9001-2000 certification in the year 2000.

The department is determined to make its students practically sound and sincere efforts have been made to achieve this goal. Experts from industry have been involved to guide the students in their project work. To

facilitate the students a PCB Design & Manufacturing Lab and a Project Lab have been set up. Students can work in these labs after the college hours and even on weekends.

The department has been continuously growing since its establishment. At present the department has got infrastructure and facilities unmatched by any Engineering College under P.T.U. Following are some of the details about the department:

Accreditations: The department of ECE* was accredited by The Institute of Engineers (India) in 2003* got accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in 2004 and was reaccredited in 2008.

In addition to the central computer centre, the department has its own dedicated computer labs with 85 workstations (desktops & laptops) having latest configurations to fulfill the needs of design and simulation software used in the field of electronics. Computer labs are connected to internet through 5Mbps (1:1) full duplex optical fiber leased line. Wireless internet connectivity is also available at every place in the department. To provide uninterrupted power supply in these labs, the department has two high quality UPS (20KVA and 60KVA of APC). Access of around 120 reputed journals in various branches of engineering through web portal of IEEE i.e. www.ieeexplore.ieee.org is available for the use of students and faculty. The department has its own website www.ece.bbsbec.ac.in for providing information about the department.

The department is well equipped with software required for the design and simulation of electronic and electrical systems. These softwares include Orcad 9.1, Matlab and Simulink, Proteus VSM 6.0, VLSI Design Tool Set: Active HDL simulation & Implementation Software, Synplify Synthesizer, Xilinx, Modelsim, Keil Ccompiler.

In addition to the central library, the department has its own library which has reference books, journals and old question papers for the reference of the students and staff members. Previous project and training reports are also placed in this library for ready reference of the students.

The department has its own PCB lab in which students can design and fabricate PCBs as per the requirements of their projects. This lab is not specified in the university curricula but has been set up to enhance the practical knowledge of students and to remove the barrier in project design and development.

The lab provides the foundation of electronics engineering. This lab aims at providing students the knowledge about various electronic devices. Students are made familiar with electronic circuits and their intended use in various applications.

This is the era of programmable devices. To develop the programming skills of students, this lab has been established. In this lab students master programming techniques based on the object oriented approach.

Digital Signal Processing is the buzzword today. All the electronic equipment we use these days is fitted with DSP ICs to improve the signal quality. The lab aims at helping the students design and simulate DSP circuits.

The purpose of this lab is to provide an insight into the control applications. The lab is so designed as to make the students understand and visualize how the output of a system can be controlled by varying certain parameters. The lab is fully equipped to demonstrate various control principles such as how the speed of ac & dc motors can be controlled, how the angle of a shaft can be varied from a remote end, how the load current can be controlled by a small control current and still maintaining the isolation etc.

Communication is the process of exchanging information. Communication is the leading and emerging subject and communication lab aims to provide quality and reliable education to students witch includes practicals related to digital communication, analog communication, fiber optics, telecommunications etc..

Communication nowadays is mainly wireless and through satellites. For this type of communication, microwaves are the only solution as these can penetrate the ionosphere. These waves being of very small wavelength require special devices to generate and amplify them. To show the student the amazing properties of the microwaves, this lab has been set up. The lab overviews different generators, their working and emphasizes on applications of microwaves.

The lab is designed to cover the course contents in which the principles of operation and services are emphasized. The experiments have been prepared to provide an insight into both monochrome and colour TV systems. The testing and troubleshooting techniques are also included.

Power electronics is interdisciplinary in nature and is used in a variety of industries. To make students familiar witch the various devices used in the industry, this lab is of great help. The lab provides opportunity to explore the characteristics of various devices and learn their use in sophisticated devices.

This lab intended to explore the properties of digital circuits, including noise margins, propagation delay times, and aspects of integrated circuit realization.

In order to mould youth into world class technocrats of tomorrow, this lab provides the excellent practical knowledge to the students regarding the basics of electronics.

The idea behind this lab is to provide at a single place all that the students need for the development of a project. This lab is equipped with all the software, hardware, testing & measuring equipment and literature required for the purpose which include high end work stations, mixed signed oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers etc.

Department of Electrical Engineering

The Electrical Engineering department was established in 2002 and is active in teaching and research. The department has academic programmes with about 280 undergraduate and 30 Postgraduate students on roll. The department is equipped with the latest experimental and computational facilities for the development of the students. The major emphasis of the department is to impart technical training to encourage curiosity and innovativeness among the students and lay a foundation from where they can acquire quick learning ability and adapt to the fast changing needs of the industry. The department has well-established laboratories with the latest facilities. A number of short term training programmes, seminars and conferences have been conducted in the past.

The department has state of art infrastructure and laboratories for training students to meet the needs and requirements of the industry.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 1993 with the inception of the college. The department is ISO 9001:2000 certified and accredited by The Institution of Engineers India. Recently, it has been re-accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for further five years. Apart from conducting undergraduate programme B.Tech. (Mechanical Engineering) with an intake of 120 students, the department is running a full time post graduate course M.Tech. in CAD/CAM approved by AICTE. A Regional Center of Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar has been established for imparting part-time M. Tech. (Machine Design). Professionally qualified and well trained faculty of the department work with full dedication and commitment. They are actively engaged in research and publish good amount of research papers every year. Two faculty members are Ph.D. and eleven are pursuing Ph.D. Short term training programs in the related fields are conducted for faculty in the department. Faculty is always encouraged to attend advanced short term courses/trainings for upgradation of their knowledge in other reputed institutions. Some of the faculty members are also sponsored for pursuing higher education under QIP scheme of M.H.R.D India. All of the faculty members of the department have inculcated effective use of LCD projectors, Video cassettes and CDs in their teaching. Teachers use internet for delivery of instructions, tutorial sheets, and results of internal evaluation.The undergraduate program in the mechanical engineering has evolved over the past fifteen years into one that builds up on the fundamental knowledge of the students, permitting them to explore their interests to a greater depth. Admitted to the course on the basis of a rigorous admission procedure, they learn the nuances of mechanical engineering. The assignments and projects help develop in them a team-spirit, working for individual betterment. The continued input available from the industry ensures that the focus is on the latest developments while having a firm foothold on the fundamentals. The objective of this lab is to provide basic knowledge of application of computers in various stages of design, analysis and manufacturing of components. This lab is equipped with advanced software and hardware. The students practice the designing of the 3-D models using Pro-Engineer various mechanical softwares like Autodesk Inventor, Visual Solid, MatLab and Stardyne etc, with actual machining on various CNC machines available in the lab. A Flexible Manufacturing systems including AS/RS procured at the cost of Rs. 30 lacs is the recent addition to this lab.

This lab exposes students to the basic fundamentals of Computer Graphics and is equipped with latest Pantium IV Dell Machines and AutoCAD Solution Set. First year students of all the branches come to this lab for learning and practice in AutoCAD.

This lab provides exposure to various aspects of Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning. The objective of this lab is to perform experiments on various uses of refrigeration in our day to day life like AC, Refrigerator, Water cooler, Ice plant etc. Air washer and an Imported Electrolux Refrigerator in this lab demonstrate non-conventional Cooling.

In this lab students perform various experiments to clear their basic fundamentals of vibrations. This lab is equipped with universal vibration apparatus which is used to perform various experiments of vibration analysis. Students from other engineering colleges also come to conduct experiments in this lab.

This lab gives exposure from the basic to complex measuring and inspection instruments that are used in industries at various levels. In this lab students learn to operate various digital and analog instruments. Lab is equipped with the precision instruments like Telesuf, 3D-CMM, Profile Projector, Tool maker microscope etc. and many students pursuing higher studies & research make use of his lab.

Objective of this lab is to strengthen the practical fundamentals of students in the field of hydraulic & pneumatic robotics applications in Industrial Automation. Advanced training kits on electro pneumatic/ PLC/ Robotics & software related to this field are latest addition to this lab.

Students are made conversant with the fundamentals and applications of various aspects of Industrial Engg. The various equipments in the lab include TMT equipment, ergometer, sound level meter, lusmeter, ECG machine, Anthropometer. Various work study techniques are used by the students for studying and for increasing productivity and effectiveness of the manufacturing system. The equipment of the lab is being widely put into use by students for their project and research work. This lab provides the students a platform where they can gain experience about the scenario of the industrial environment.

The objective of this lab is to provide practical knowledge to the students in the field of automobile engineering. The lab is well equipped with various types of cut-section models of Gear Box, steering gear unit, and dynamic etc. The lab is also equipped with air-brake system and electrical system of petrol car. The open chassis of car in the lab provides a complete exposure of all inner details to the students where they can strengthen their theoretical knowledge through actual practical work.

This lab is developed to give the students an opportunity to explore & gain the practical knowledge of various aspects of Heat Transfer viz. conduction, convection and radiation. Lab is fully equipped with latest and sophisticated equipment including Heat exchangers, Natural and forced convection equipment, emissivity & other radiation and conduction based equipment. Research work is also being carried by the students in the lab in this upcoming & growing field.

This lab helps students in understanding the fundamentals of fluid mechanics. This is equipped with various flow measurement devices including orifice meter, venturi meter, pitot tube, and notches etc.

The purpose of this lab is to acquaint students with different types of IC engines like single and multi-cylinder Petrol engines and diesel engines. In addition, the students study performance of different air compressors i.e. reciprocating, centrifugal and axial flow compressors.

This lab provides the students the knowledge about working of different types of governors and gear mechanisms. Cam profile analysis is made with different cam and follower attachments. The students conduct experiment of whirling of shafts, determination of gyroscopic couple, study of pressure distribution in a full journal bearing, etc. Various models of links and mechanisms help students in understanding the Kinematics.

This lab provides Practical Knowledge of Heat Treatment process such as annealing, hardening, normalizing and tempering using digital Heat Treatment Furnace. The students also prepare steel specimen to study their micro-structure using metallurgical microscope after polishing on double disc polishing machine. This lab is extensively used by researchers in field of metallurgy for their experiments.

This lab is equipped with Erosion Testing Machine and Wear Testing Machine. This lab is also extensively used by researchers for testing purposes.

College is having very spacious central workshops, in which basic training satisfies the degree requirement for all streams of engineering. This training develops skills in the use of precision measuring instruments and the operation of the various machines. After completion of practical training students become capable to use the facilities in the central workshops for fabrication of lab/research projects in order to enhance learning experience.

This shop is designed to provide undergraduates and technical staff with hands-on experience in safe operating practices in the machine shop. The students learn to operate the most versatile and most commonly used machines in the industry today. It is equipped with lathes, shapers, milling machines, planer, Slotter, capstan lathe, production lathe, cylindrical grinder, surface grinder, broaching machine and honing machine.

This shop is designed for the beginner with little or no experience in welding. A training in general welding includes both oxyacetylene and arc welding on ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys. Repair welding, welding symbols, trade terminology, care and use of various types of welding equipment and safety procedures are taught in this shop. The training consists of the basic techniques required to deposit sound welds on plain carbon steel plate. The exercises involve various joint designs in all positions on plates. Several electrode types and sizes are used on both AC and DC welding machines. A program of theory sessions involving welding safety, proper machine setting adjustments, basic metal knowledge and welding symbols is also conducted. Various types of arc welding sets, resistance welding sets, oxy acetylene sets are available.

This shop imparts an introductory training in carpentry. Students will acquire skills in using both power and hand tools and general information regarding building materials and construction methods. Safe working practices are explained and expected from students at all times. Classroom work includes substantial trade related mathematics.

This shop is an introductory training in fitting. Students acquire skills in using tools and basic fitting equipment in a safe shop environment. Also included is an introduction to basic metals, equipment, theory, and jobs in fitting practice.

This shop gives valuable training for foundry shop majors. Students learn the processes of hot metal casting and how they interface with other production methods. Generally training in this shop will provide a history of casting methods which have been used for centuries and covers the technology of sand casting for part production and the creation of artistic pieces. It includes industrial pattern making techniques and foundry methods.

Demonstration and detailed explanation of tools and equipment are used in this shop also practice of Forging operations are performed here. Technical know how is imparted on Blowers, pressure blowers (hand and power operated) upsetting operation, description and specification of anvils, swage blocks, power hammers and hammers etc.

College has a well stocked library having separate stacking and reading area. It has 27854 text books as well as 5943 titles. It has more than 853 books on general topics. It subscribes 25 international journals and 20 national journals. The study room of library is centrally air-conditioned. The library is fully automated. The SOUL software is used for the issue and return of books. A multimedia lab is attached to the library for screening of audio-video courses. The facility of networking is available in the library. The students and staff members can access online journals.

To update their knowledge at international level, the students and staff have been provided this facility to access I) 486 online IEEE INTERNATIONAL JOURNALS on http://ieeexplore.ieee.orgii) Online science direct journals. We procured it from INDEST-AICTE.III)We are in the processing of linking our college under EDUSAT.

This section consists of around 1950 reference books along with 2144 CDs and 532 video cassettes etc.Here students can view these CDs in reading room. The rules for reference section are as under:

1. The required CD's be must obtained from the concerned person and returned after viewing.2. No other CD's / Pen drive from outside will be used in the audio visual library.3. All persons are required to adhere to the library timing.4. Readers are not allowed to take any reference book outside the reading room.5. Readers are not allowed to take any other book inside the reading room.6. Readers are requested not to put any mark with pen/pencil on reference books. Defaulters shall have to pay an amount equal to twice the cost of defaced books/journals.7. During weekends faculty members may borrow reference books. Such book/Volumes shall be returned to the library within one hour of the opening of the library the next working day. In case a book is returned late a fine of Rs 2/- per hour shall be charged.8. All students must carry their identity card while visiting the library.

A book bank exclusively for SC/ST students has been established in the library by the Govt. of Punjab, in which there are 1770 books at present, which are issued to SC/ST students only.

1. Four books shall be issued to student for a maximum period of 21 days.2. In case of faculty members, 12 books shall be issued for a semester to the teachers teaching under-graduate classes and 15 to those teaching M.Tech. Classes.3. In case of non-teaching staff, 3 books will be issued for a maximum period of 15 days. The non-teaching administrative staff will be issued only non-technical books.4. Students proceeding on training shall be issued 2 books for a maximum period of one semester5. Only SC/ST students shall be issued upto 8 books from the SC/ST book bank meant for them for a maximum period of one semester.6. Video Cassettes/CD will not be issued to any student. Teachers can get these issued for use in the Audio-Visual room in the library.7. The loss of a book should be reported immediately otherwise the applicable fine shall be charged up to the date of reporting the loss.8. In case books are not returned on time, a fine of Rs.1/- per day per book shall be charged for the first 7 days and Rs. 2/- per book per day for the subsequent days.9. Reference books, Journals, Periodicals, Thesis/Project reports shall be issued to the teachers on overnight basis only. These books/ volumes shall be returned to the library within one hour of the opening of the library the next working day. In case book is returned late, a fine of Rs.2/- per hour shall be charged.10. A lost book shall either be replaced by the latest edition of the book or paid at double the current price of the book. The price to be charged shall be determined by the librarian.11. In case a book is out of print and its latest price is not available, it shall be the discretion of the principal to decide the amount to be charged.

12. If student is found stealing the book, he/she will be fined Rs 1000/- and shall be debarred for entering the library for a period of one semester. In case of repetition of the act of stealing, disciplinary action shall be taken which may result in rustication from the college.13. No person shall engage in conversation in any part of the library to the annoyance of other readers.14. No person shall write upon, damage or mark any book.15. All personal belongings, including personal books, magazines and issued books to be returned on a future date, shall be kept at the property counter of the library.16. A student must carry one's identity card while visiting the library.17.The library shall remain open from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. or as decided from time to time but the books shall be issued only from 9 A.M. to 4:30 PM.

The Training and placement cell of BBSBEC is an integral part of the Institute with an active role in career services. The institute has provided complete infrastructure for effective functioning of the cell. Training activities are organized throughout the year in an effort towards preparing the prospective students for the campus selection programmes.The cell keeps on inviting various industries and reputed firms for the campus selection programmes. Every year almost 75% of the students are being placed in well reputed companies.

The average salary of a pass out student is around 2.5 lakhs per annum. The very fact that the same companies keep coming back for our students each year demonstrates the caliber of our students and the academic ranking of our college. Being NBA re-accredited, the college receives ample response from the industries and the corporate sector for the recruitment of engineers. We have new companies added up every year with the assurance that they will get the crème-de-la-crème from us for the industry from every department. Those considering career in education or its related fields are offered detailed career guidance at the Training & Placement Cell. All advice is based on up-to-date placement statistics and an envisioned view of future educational and industrial trends.

The cell receives the feedback pertinent to the curriculum improvement from the officials & HR personnel of visiting companies and facilitates it to the faculty, to ensure that the curriculum follows the latest industrial trends. In reciprocal, the departments take the onus to incorporate the suggestions and the updates.

The cell is sensitized to function all through the year towards generating placement and training opportunities for the students. Reputed industrial houses across the country visit our institute regularly for the campus recruitment programmes. The placement cell coordinates with the corporate sector and provides well developed infrastructure such as Auditorium, Conference and Interview rooms, Guest house to facilitate the campus selection programmes.

A large number of seminars are organized by the department to acquaint the students with the latest opportunities and market trends. Seminars & Workshops on Personality Development, Interview, Communication Skills, Mock Interviews etc. are also organized.

The top recruiters include Cognizant, Larsen &Toubro ltd., Data Patterns, Punj Lloyd, Acme Telepower, CBL, Punjab Tractors Limited, Mobera Systems, HCL Technologies. We have MOU's with organizations like Red Hat, CISCO, and Mobera Systems to produce certified professionals. A research and development center especially set up for these organizations is functional in the college.

The training and placement department has also conducted successfully one month in-campus training program for the new recruits of Cognizant and students of Delhi Engineering College, Delhi, Thapar University, Patiala, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and many other prominent colleges of North India participated in the training program.

The training and placement department arranges special need-based training courses, workshops, guest lectures to enhance the knowledge and skills of students. External faculty and experts are invited, when needed, to provide this training. Certain basic skills like personality development, preparation for interviews are conducted in the college campus, as part of the college support.

Sports Activities The college has excellent facilities for indoor and outdoor games and sports. The college has two Lawn Tennis Courts, two Basketball Courts, two Cricket Practice Pitches and grounds. Standard track for track & field events and for almost all the games such as Hockey, Football, Netball, Handball, Kabaddi and Kho-Kho are available. Gymnasium hall for indoor games (Badminton, Table Tennis, Chess, Shooting, Judo, Taekwondo) is also available. In the year 2005-06, the department organized fencing coaching camp on behalf of PTU, and and PTU team stood first in All India Inter-University Fencing Competition held at Punjabi University, Patiala . In the year 2006, the department organized workshop-cum-games and sports on latest rules and regulations on behalf of PTU, Jalandhar, which was first of its kind in the history of PTU. The department has maintained its record to hold inter-branch and inter-year competitions of various sports this year as well, in which the students of the college had shown their extreme interest. Some of the major achievements in the year 2007-08 by the college in the Inter-college PTU and Open Invitation Tournaments are:
