INTRODUCTION
Police officers and sheriffs ensure public safety by
enforcing laws and investigating crimes. State and
local law-enforcement agencies generally employ
them, although opportunities are available with
federal agencies.
NATURE OF WORK
- This is responsible law enforcement work in the
protection of life and property through the enforcement
of state and local laws and ordinances
Work is performed under the direct supervision of a
Police Sergeant and the general supervision of a Police
Lieutenant. Work is reviewed through
reports, observations, and discussions and evaluations
WORKING CONDITIONS
Police officers are first-line emergency workers
who investigate crimes, patrol communities and
respond to accidents. Working conditions vary
greatly based on factors such as location, staffing
levels and the number of incident reports. Police
work often proves to be both physically and mentally
demanding, especially compared to most other jobs.
JOB OUTLOOK/EMPLOYMENT
Employment of police and detectives is projected
to grow 5 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than
the average for all occupations. Continued interest
for public safety will lead to new openings for
officers; however, jobs may be competitive,
depending on location.
TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS, ADVANCEMENT
Law enforcement officers, including both state
officers, federal agents and detectives, protect our
lives and personal property from harm.
There are many different areas of law
enforcement, and duties performed by officers and
detectives will depend upon their area of focus and
the size and type of organization for which they
work.
