REFLECTION ON THE 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER Six weeks into our Easter rejoicing, the Church gives us readings today that start preparing us for a return to ordinary life. The Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel both dwell on proper daily behavior for followers of Jesus, while the reading from Revelation reminds us why we bother with laws at all. In Acts, leaders of the church meet to discuss which essential elements of the Mosaic Law converts must obey if they wish to be disciples of Jesus Christ. John’s Gospel reflects back to the Last Supper discourse when Jesus himself emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s commandments. Observing God’s law, says Jesus, shows a desire to be intimate with the Lord. We follow rules not for their own sake, but to love God and neighbor better. This more excellent love brings us closer to Revelation’s vision of paradise, gleaming with “the splendor of God.”

FAREWELL TO FATHER JEFFRY ROTT AND WARM WELCOME TO FATHER DAVID O’BRIEN My friends in Christ: Ten years ago, I welcomed a young, newly-ordained priest to SS. Simon and Jude Parish, West Chester. We spent two great years together, until I was requested to start a new office in the Archdiocese: the Office for Stewardship and Development. As a result, I had to resign as Pastor of SS. Simon and Jude. Fast forward a few years and who would have thought that Father Jeff would be assigned here at St. Jude Parish. This past week, Father Jeff was assigned as Administrator of St. Lawrence Parish, Upper Darby. He had requested the Archbishop to have his own parish. Father Jeff is so excited and I am happy for him. He has already discovered that Planet Fitness is only one mile away, Overbrook Golf Course is six miles away and the ballpark is much closer to his new Parish than St. Jude. Father Jeff is also thrilled to be closer to his spiritual director and our friend, Father Nick Rashford, President Emeritus of St. Joseph’s University. We will have a farewell reception on Sunday, June 2nd, following the 12:00 PM Mass, which he will celebrate. Please join me in congratulating Father Jeff as he assumes his new assignment.
WELCOME FATHER DAVID O’BRIEN On Saturday, May 18th, Archbishop Chaput ordained seven young men to the Priesthood for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Before the final blessing, the Archbishop gave the newly-ordained their first assignment. When the Archbishop called Father O’Brien’s name he stood up and heard the words, “I’m assigning you to Monsignor Beach at St. Jude Parish, Chalfont.” With that, the Cathedral broke into a loud applause. I know that my head was spinning with excitement and I’m sure his was also. On Sunday, May 19th, I concelebrated Father O’Brien’s first Mass at St. Peter’s Parish in West Brandywine (Coatesville). All the new priest assignments will take place on June 17, 2019. Please join me in welcoming Father David O’Brien to St. Jude Parish. (P.S. I will prepare a profile of Father O’Brien for the weekend of June 15 – 16.) Please remember both Father Jeff and Father O’Brien in your prayers.
THE LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR
The Little Sisters of the Poor are an international congregation of Roman Catholic women religious. Founded in 1839 by Saint Jeanne Jugan, they serve the elderly poor in over 30 countries around the world. Their mission is to offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed with the love of Christ and cared for as family. These residents are accompanied with dignity until God calls them to himself. The Little Sisters of the Poor have been serving and caring for the needy elderly in West Philadelphia for 147 years. It is with the deepest gratitude to God and to these wonderful sisters that my mother was accepted on January 5, 2017 as a resident in their long-care home, which is called Holy Family Home. For the past 2 ½ years, I have been so impressed and grateful for the tender, compassionate and loving care that they have given to my mother. Father Sullivan, who served here at St. Jude Parish as a parochial vicar just a couple years ago, is now the chaplain at Holy Family Home. The Little Sisters of the Poor have asked me if they could address our parishioners regarding their annual appeal. So please join me in welcoming the Little Sisters of the Poor to our parish next weekend on June 1 - 2, 2019. Sister Veronica Susan will speak after Communion and invite members of our parish to share in their special ministry to the elderly poor.
God bless! Monsignor Francis W. Beach, Pastor

Memorial Day — May 27, 2019 Heavenly Father,
We pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the examples of their sacrifice
inspire in us the selfless love of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops,
and fill their homes and their lives with Your strength and peace. In union with people of goodwill of every nation, embolden us to answer the call to work for peace and

Treasures From Our Tradition Why is it still Easter? The lilies have long since faded. The roots of our tradition of fifty days of rejoicing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven-day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of creation plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord ’s Day among our ancestors in the faith was The Eighth Day, meaning that in Christ a breakthrough to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signaling that a new age has begun in Christ and the outpouring of his Spirit. The Jewish appreciation for Pentecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the fiftieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. Today, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fasting and by never kneeling at liturgy. These customs all point to our conviction that time is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Christian year: forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to fifty days of unrestrained rejoicing. That ’s why it is still Easter!
