Keynote speakers at MWC 2015 – with The Edge of Innovation as its overarching theme – come from a variety of backgrounds, including banking, consumer goods and car manufacturing. Michael O’Hara, GSMA’s chief marketing officer, embraces the diversity. “There needs to be partnership between different industry players and mobile operators to develop the ‘connected living’ services that are sure to be a dominant theme at this year’s MWC edition,” he told Mobile World Daily. O’Hara highlighted a keynote session on Monday, ‘Keys to the Connected Lifestyle’, as just one example of big-name brands moving more towards mobile. One of the speakers is Karsten Ottenberg, chief executive of BSH Bosch and Siemens Home Appliances. Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Renault-Nissan Alliance, will be joining Ottenberg on stage, as too will Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T Mobility & Business Solutions. AT&T, along with a growing number of heavyweight operators, is making concerted pushes into the ‘connected home’ and ‘connected car’ spaces, emphasising the importance of partnerships and collaboration as a spur to innovation. Ronan de Renesse, lead analyst for consumer technology at Ovum, said that with mobile operators continuing to have a strong influence on device distribution, especially out of Asia, “it’s important for Asian vendors to come to MWC and connect with them”. The number of Asia-headquartered exhibitors this year is set to increase by 34 per cent compared with the 2014 event. Almost 20 per cent of exhibiting companies and about 15 per cent of total visitors are expected to be from the region. With almost 2000 exhibitors covering more than 100,000 square metres of net exhibition and conference floor space, MWC continues to be the largest global event for the mobile industry. Chinese and Indian handset vendors such as Xiaomi, Meizu, Oppo, OnePlus, Micromax and Karbonn have risen in popularity in their home markets and have captured the interest of operators and other non-Asia distributors throughout 2014, Renesse said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the presence of those device vendors has been requested by operators rather than the opposite way around – yet another reason for them to attend MWC,” he told Mobile World Daily. Canalys analyst Jessica Kwee noted MWC has become a natural choice for Asian firms as a platform to reach a global audience. With its scale, the event “gets the most attention, particularly from English- based media, which, in turn, creates more coverage worldwide”. Phil Marshall, chief research officer at Tolaga Research, argued that Asian vendors and service providers also tend to be more interested in what is happening in the rest of the world as opposed to just their local regions, while western vendors often tend to be more interested in what is happening in western markets. Such comments come at a time when MWC event organiser, GSMA, is also enjoying success for its own Asia-focused event, recently rebranded under the Mobile World Congress banner. Taking place 15-17 July, Mobile World Congress Shanghai will target the world’s largest mobile market, offering participating companies the ability to reach a global audience, while also enabling international brands to capitalise on opportunities in the fast- growing and dynamic Asian market. ZUCKERBERG IS BACKMark Zuckerberg certainly fits intothat category. The founder andchief executive of Facebook madehis debut MWC appearance lastyear, and will use a Mondaykeynote session at this year’s MWCedition – screened live by MobileWorld Live – to give an update onthe internet.org initiative. Led by Facebook, internet.org
has the ambitious target ofproviding internet access toeveryone on the planet. As part ofmaking that happen, Zuckerberg, atMWC 2014, said he wanted toprove that there is an attractivebusiness model for operators – inemerging markets – if they offeredbasic internet services for free. Unlike last year, however,
Zuckerberg will not take centrestage alone. After being quizzed byWired Magazine’s Jessi Hempel, theFacebook chief executive will bejoined by Jon Fredrik Baksaas, chiefexecutive of Telenor Group (andGSMA chairman), Christian DeFaria, chief executive of AirtelAfrica, and Mario Zanotti, seniorvice president of operations atMillicom. “We hope to hear a debate on
whether internet.org can be acomplementary play to mobileoperators,” said O’Hara. Other notable keynotes, said the
GSMA’s marketing chief, are KenHu, deputy chairman and rotatingchief executive of Huawei, andSteve Mollenkopf, Qualcomm’schief executive. It is the first timethat the Chinese supplier will begiving a keynote MWCpresentation, while Mollenkopf ismaking his first MWC keynote asCEO of the US chip company. Major figures from the mobile
operator community nonethelessunderpin the conferenceprogramme. Aside from Telenor’sBaksaas, Monday’s opening
keynote – on the theme of mobileinnovation – has presentations fromTimotheus Höttges, chief executiveat Deutsche Telekom; César Alierta,executive chairman at Telefónica;and Vittorio Colao, chief executiveof Vodafone Group.
HOT TOPICSO’Hara does not expect a shortageof talking points at MWC 2015. Netneutrality, 5G, mobile identity andinternet encryption are just some ofthe themes he expects to dominate.No doubt addressing the first – netneutrality – will be Tom Wheeler,chairman of the US FederalCommunications Commission(FCC). Keen for the FCC to imposenet neutrality rules, Wheeler will bekeenly listened to by mobileoperator executives when he takesto the MWC stage on Tuesday.On 5G, a term still not defined,
O’Hara said he wanted to “bringtogether those who have taken aleadership position”. The result is aTuesday keynote discussion, ‘Theroad to 5G’, which includes newEuropean Commissioner, GüntherOettinger. Other speakers are
Stéphane Richard, chief executiveof Orange, Rajeev Suri, chiefexecutive of Nokia and Dr Chang-Gyu Hwang, chief executive ofSouth Korea’s KT. Huawei’s Hu andQualcomm’s Mollenkopf make upthe rest of the panel.
INNOVATION LET LOOSEKeynote sessions, however, are justone part of MWC 2015. Among the2,000 companies exhibiting, and themore than 100,000 net squaremetres of floor space, there is alsoGSMA Innovation City. Known lastyear as Connected City, whichattracted around 18,000 visitors,O’Hara said the name change betterreflects the theme of MWC 2015, aswell as the more immersive mobileexperience it offers. Interactive demos featuring the likes
of AT&T, Jasper, KT Corporation,Oral-B, Sierra Wireless and Vodafonewill showcase what is possible with thelatest mobile technology. “If visitorswant to understand everything that’sgoing on, in one place, they should gothere,” said O’Hara. A glimpse of future innovation can
also be seen at Fira Montjuïc, MWC’sprevious main venue in Barcelona,with the 4 Years From Now (4YFN)international programme presentedby Mobile World Capital Barcelona.Now in its second year, 4YFN brings
together promising mobile start-upsfrom around the world. There were2,200 participants at 4YFN last year,but O’Hara anticipates that number toshoot up to around 5,000 this year.Other MWC 2015 numbers are
on the rise. For this year’s GlobalMobile Awards – celebrating its20th anniversary and hosted bywriter, actor and comic genius JohnCleese – there were a record 800-plus entries, well up on last year’s680 award submissions. And the number of total visitors
at MWC 2015? O’Hara expects thatto exceed 90,000 – well up from lastyear’s 86,000.

WHAT TO EXPECTRenesse said MWC also goesbeyond just devices, with largeAsian internet players like Alibabaand Tencent likely to attend todevelop and manage theirinternational expansion plans.Top handset vendors including
Samsung, Huawei and HTC areexpected to announce flagshipsmartphones. ZTE said it will unveilits Blade S6 in Europe, which waslaunched in Hong Kong in lateJanuary.The focus from device players will
be on the same specs as usual: screen,camera, processor, and battery life.“We might see some innovation withcurved and bendable screens like theLG G Flex 2,” Renesse said.
There will be some new tabletsreleased, the analyst continued, buthe doesn’t expect a lot ofinnovation in that space – whichhas suffered from mixed demandrecently.Samsung, forecasting its
smartphone shipments to increasequarter-on-quarter in Q1, said in anearnings call at the end of Januarythe business will recover by offeringdifferentiated designs andmaterials, such as flexible OLED,that rivals can’t copy. It offered nospecifics on its releases inBarcelona. Taiwan’s HTC, which has
rebounded strongly recently, isplanning to get an early start likemany of it rivals, with the companywidely expected to launch thesuccessor to its flagship One M8 atan event on Sunday, 1 March.
HTC recently reported its firstyear-on-year quarterly revenueincrease for the first time in severalyears and is forecasting strong salesgrowth in the first part of 2015,after developing more affordabledevices for emerging markets.
INSIDE THE DEVICESTaiwanese silicon vendor MediaTek,after a busy CES in January where itsigned up two customers for itssystem-on-chip hardware for AndroidTV, told Mobile World Daily it willannounce a new partner at MWC thatwill allow it to boost the power andefficiency of devices runningmultimedia and heavy graphics. An insider in the chip industry
suspects MediaTek will adopt one ofthe high-profile graphic processingunits (GPUs) – perhaps from ARM orNvidia. He said that many chipsets
now mention the specifications andthe brand of the GPU they include aspart of their offering.Many processors are supporting
up to eight GPUs, which are used tooffload workloads from the mainprocessor for applications such asHD video and the latest games, asscreen resolutions get higher.The fast-rising company, which is
targeting growth beyond low-end andmid-range smartphones where it ismost well-known, has developed nineLTE platforms since late 2013, withLTE chips accounting for 10 per centof smartphone shipments last year.That is forecast to jump to
more than 30 per cent his year. ItsLTE portfolio now only includes64-bit SOCs.A MediaTek representative said it
plans to speed up its LTE productroadmap with a series of chip
launches for a variety of devices,catering to the trend towards multi-screen convergence.Ovum’s Renesse said IoT and
wearables will be a big theme thisyear as well. He expects the bigtraditional mobile makers likeSamsung, HTC and Sony tocombine smartphone and wearableannouncements at MWC.Sherrie Huang, Analysys Mason’s
programme head for Asia Pacific,expects to see “smart home”releases from Samsung, six monthsafter it acquired SmartThings – andpossibly from LG.On the infrastructure side, we can
certainly expect more 5G conceptsand the extension of 4G with LTE-A and technologies like unlicensedLTE from the Chinese equipmentsuppliers, which remained tight-lipped about their plans at MWC.

What will be the mostoverhyped sector inmobile this year?
5G will be a big focus area,however it is premature totalk about potentialapplications as there is still noconsensus on what it is. Also,many of the 5G use cases thathave been proposed couldactually be achieved with 4Gtechnologies, with moreoperators enhancing theirnetworks with NFV/SDN orHetNets.
5G – no doubt. Absent anyclear definitions on what 5Greally is (or will be), expect tosee the term applied to nearlyevery mobile technologyunder the sun. Thepositioning of 5G as anevolution from today’s 4Gnetworks supports this type ofmarketing. That doesn’t meanit won’t quickly becomeannoying to hear everythinglinked to 5G, years beforeinitial deployments take place.
Virtual reality. Since theacquisition of the virtualreality startup Oculus VR byFacebook, we have seen newproducts being announced,such as Samsung’s Gear VRor the Sony Morpheus VR. Butthe lack of content, the bulkyhardware, the premium pricetag and the potentially limitednumber of users interested init may result in a gimmicktechnology like 3D TVs or 3Dsmartphones.
Big data is an over-used andclichéd term. The potential isenormous, but it is a hugearea that needs to be brokendown into its constituentmanageable parts to ensureprogress.
Smart clothing. Beyondprofessional athletes, thereare not enough compellinguse cases today. I’m hopingthat with advancement ofsensor technology, thewearable band on my wrist isable to gather all the relevantdata about me that I (or mydoctor) need.
What one thing wouldyou like to happen inthe mobile industryin the next 12months?
More activity within the cellularIoT space. Operators andvendors need to collaboratemore to enable the growth oflow power wide areaapplications within utilities,smart cities and agriculture. I’dlike to see also more focus ondeveloping innovative andsustainable business models inthis area.
If we can look back at 2015 andsee a deeper vendor focus onmobile services andexperiences – not just networksand devices – that would makeme very happy. Yes, networksand devices are key todelivering meaningfulexperiences. But they’re onlyone part of the equation…andnot necessarily the part thatwill help every carrierdifferentiate or break out ofprice wars.
I would like to see the mobilewallet become a mass marketreality. Most people carryseveral payment cards, loyaltycards, tickets, receipts,vouchers, and cash. The wideavailability of smartphones withNFC technology can enable themobile wallet in everyone’spockets, when the hurdles areovercome. Despite thechallenges, the launch of ApplePay last year will trigger theindustry to move faster towarda solution.
Operator tariff innovation fortablets and wearables. Forexample, AT&T and Qualcommmay have forged a way aheadwith the Timex Ironman Watch;1 year free followed by US$40per year thereafter, enabled byusing a Qualcomm server towork as an intermediarybetween the network andwatch, shrinking messagingand minimising powerconsumption. Similarly moreeSIMs in an effort to increasethe WAN attach rate forwearables, tablets, cars andbeyond.
It’s happening but I’d like to seethe Indian ICT market reallyfulfil its potential. The growth inChina has been phenomenal inrecent years – according toCanalys over 90% of newphones sold in China aresmartphones, it is less than40% in India. But it is not justabout getting smartphones inthe hands of consumers. Indiandevice vendors sourcecomponents from China, Indianeeds its own techmanufacturing ecosystem.

What do you expectto be the hot topics atthis year's show?
Internet of things. The themeof this year’s show is “Theedge of innovation” so I’dexpect to see even moreconnected devices and demosshowing how they fit into aconnected lifestyle. We’vebeen hearing a lot about IoT,wearables, and connectedthings and I’m looking forwardto seeing some coolconnected stuff.
This will be the year that 5Gtakes over MWC. Whilevendors jockey for mindshare,there will be no shortage ofposturing around “what 5G is”and who should care. Thisincludes the technologies thatwill make 5G a reality(including virtualisation,millimetre wave spectrum,unlicensed spectrum, duplex-free operations) along with 5Gdrivers like ubiquitous IoTdemands.
Wearables are part of mostmanufacturers’ roadmaps forthis year and we will see anexplosion of new products atMWC. Apple Watch will help togrow consumers’ awarenessof the category, while low-endLTE phablets will also be atthe centre of each phonemaker's launches as largerscreens become mainstreamat affordable prices.
IoT in the form of wearables,the smart home andconnected car will be the bigthemes once again.Wearables, smartphones andtablets will be launched infleets like last year. Forsmartphones I’m expecting tosee dual-edge displays,gesture sensors, arrays ofmultiple camera sensors orcamera fusion, energyharvesting, and LTE atridiculously low prices.
Flagship smartphonelaunches – some vendorshave used their own events fortheir flagship smartphonelaunches: this year they aredoing it on the biggest stage.Connected devices – theproducts and the lack of acommon standard that will getthem talking to each other. The topic of security will notgo away. It is getting morecomplex to protect our data –a great industry to be in.
Any tips for abreakthrough name,service orapplication?
Uber has recently causedquite a lot of disruption in itsfield and I am expecting to seestart-ups in other industriesutilising a similar businessmodel. We’re also seeing themessaging space movingtowards ephemeral andanonymous messaging withapps such as Yik Yak andTappy, which allow users toshare messages and pictureswith anyone in the samelocation as them.
Virtualisation and SDN will bemuch more “real.” In 2013,the topics seemed todominate MWC – with SDNoften getting conflated withNFV. Last year, messaginghoned in on NFV as carrierdemands became clearer andvendor solutions emerged.This year, carrier trials,deployments and Proof ofConcepts set the stage formoving the topics from whiteboards and into reality.
FlexEnable has developed anorganic transistor technologythat that can be used to createtruly flexible electronics withplastic flexible circuits. Thecompany claims that thisenables ultra-thin, ultra-lightweight, shatterproofelectronic displays. Thisbreakthrough technology, withcost-effective manufacturing,will revolutionise mobiledevices and wearables andwill open up new worlds forthe Internet of things (IoT).
Voice and gesture based userinterfaces will also be hottopics especially forwearables, smart homes andthe connected car. Also,renewed interest in alternateoperating systems likeWindows Phone, Firefox andeven AOSP given Android OEMprofits, due to lack ofdifferentiation.
It’s been talked about for anumber of years but we couldsee the breakthrough of softSIMs this year. It won’t bepopular with the mobileoperators, but a couple ofinfluential, global devicevendors moving in thatdirection could be enough toaccelerate the move.

This year’s Mobile World Congress marks the 4th
anniversary of the launch of Mobile World Live TV
(MWL TV) – the event’s official broadcast service.
Live TV hasn’t been without its challenges (I
remember the studio losing all power 30 minutes
into our opening morning broadcast back in 2011,
just after our professional host had handed the
presenting duties to my very amateur self), but it’s
been great to be part of something that brings the
event to a truly global audience.
And, with five years’ experience under our belt,
MWL’s reporter team has now mastered the art
of looking into the right camera (pictured: Matt
Ablott’s first live appearance).
We’re just a few days away from live
transmission - MWL TV will be streamed to
www.mobileworldlive.com from 8.30am on
Monday 2 March. And don’t forget that all the
week’s content will be available in bite-sized
programme chunks once the event closes its
doors for another year. So if you miss any of the
live broadcast and want to relive a particular
programme, every piece of content will be
available for replay just days after we’ve said
adios to Barcelona.

As we prepare for this year’s broadcast – and we can’t wait to bring the buzz ofMWC15 to all attendees throughout the event and the city of Barcelona via ourdedicated TV channel, as well as globally via our online stream – here’s 10 reasons totune into MWL TV this year, whether you’re onsite or stuck back in the office:
BIG keynotes! MWL TV is the only place you will be able to watch live, uninterrupted coverage oftwo of the biggest names in mobile: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and FCC chairman TomWheeler. First up – after the success of his appearance at last year’s show – MWL TV is excited towelcome back Zuckerberg as he discusses efforts to extend connectivity to more people aroundthe world. Our studio coverage will kick off at 5.45pm CET on Monday 2 March and will alsofeature Zuckerberg in conversation with the CEO of Airtel Africa, the SVP of Operations atMillicom, and the President and CEO of Telenor Group. And at the same time the following dayTom Wheeler will join GSMA director general Anne Bouverot in a fireside chat to discuss theimpact of recent telecom regulation in the US, as well as the potentially global ramifications ofWheeler’s stance on net neutrality.
This year, we’re adding a little extra… If Facebook and the FCC don’t whet your appetite, howabout tuning in to hear the thoughts of the man leading Google’s Android, Chrome & Appsstrategy? In a special ‘MWL Extra’ session at 1.15pm Monday, we will broadcast an exclusivepresentation by Sundar Pichai, the man described by Fortune as now “a clear No. 2 to Google CEOLarry Page.”
Our lineup of CEO interviews is (almost) an A-Z of the major players in the mobile industry. Our 25interviews already confirmed for the show include the bosses of everyone from ARM to YotaPhone(we’re working on ZTE!).
We’ve been promised time in the studio with musician will.i.am and comedy legend (and this year’sAwards host) John Cleese. We're not quite sure how these interviews will pan out, but they won'tbe dull.
On the subject of the awards, MWL TV will bring you extensive coverage of this year’s special 20thanniversary event. From nominee debates and winner interviews in our studio, to highlights of theawards ceremony and aftershow party, MWL TV will capture all the action.
In a new development this year, MWL will be capturing and sharing the buzz of the showfloor viamobile. Our reporter Ronan Shields will be filming video snippets of the coolest and quirkiest techand publishing this content socially, so keep an eye out on our Twitter and Facebook pages (as wellas the GSMA social accounts) for this series of videos throughout the week.
MWL TV will broadcast highlights of every major press event and device launch at MWC15.Ericsson, HTC, Huawei, Mozilla, LG, Samsung and Sony are all planning announcements beforewe’ve even made it to mid-morning coffee on the opening day of the show.
We’ll be inviting experts into the studio to discuss the hottest industry issues. Our lineup of 20panel discussions will cover everything from 5G and big data through to wearables and the smarthome of the future.

With this year’s theme of ‘The Edgeof Innovation’, what can we expectfrom Mobile World Congress?
We’ve put together five big trends we expectto define the event in 2015.
INTERNET OF THINGSThe Internet of Things (IoT) has becomeshorthand for the concept of billions ofconnected devices. And it’s an idea that’sgetting some real traction as big namesposition themselves as players in the market. MWC could, for example, be an
opportunity for Google to flesh out its plansfor Nest, the maker of wireless-enabled smartthermostats and smoke alarms it acquired for$3.2 billion in 2014.Emma Mohr-McClune, service director for
global consumer services at Current Analysis,expects more mobile operators to stake theirclaim in the IoT space with announcementsaround the use of WebRTC.“Carriers have been trying to figure out
how to evolve their place in the IoT valuechain beyond the mere connectivity piece,and we’re excited about the potential ofWebRTC in that respect,” she said.Following AT&T’s Enhanced WebRTC API
launch in January, Mohr-McClune would not besurprised if there were more operatorannouncements along these lines at MWC, withTelefonica, Telenor and Orange likely candidates,as well as operators from the Asia Pacific region.Away from the operators, Annette
Zimmermann, principal research analyst atGartner, told Mobile World Daily that
Bluetooth beacons will be “another importanttheme” for IoT.“We are recording more activity in this space
since the end of 2014 in Europe and we shouldsee more announcements at MWC,” she noted.Another area to fall under the IoT umbrella
is connected vehicles, a prominent theme atrecent editions of Congress. Keynotes from the CEOs of chipmakers
ARM and Qualcomm could well feature thetopic, while the presence of Carlos Ghosn,Renault-Nissan Alliance CEO, suggests thecarmaker could have some significant thingsto say.Mohr-McClune believes a new buzzword in
this area will be ADAS (advanced driver assistsystems), as the tech industry moves towards“smart, self-driving cars”.
“There’s a lot of commitment and goodwork going on in this space right now,especially from the chipset makers, andsignificant ecosystem opportunities foradjacent industries, such as insurance andsecurity,” she explained.The analyst added that there are likely to be
numerous ecosystem opportunities for thetelecoms industry that have not yet beenconsidered.“It sometimes takes an industry outsider to
join the dots, state the obvious, but also point outthe elephants in the room. I’m sincerely hopingto meet these outsiders at the show – frankly,we’ve never needed them more” she said.
FLAGSHIP DEVICE LAUNCHESSamsung looks set to launch its latest flagshipsmartphone at MWC 2015, following on fromthe unveiling of Galaxy S5 last year.The South Korean giant’s smartphone
business has faltered recently, meaning theGalaxy S6 will be critical in the company’sefforts to reassert itself.“Samsung will have to really impress with
its new flagship device,” said Joe Kempton,
research analyst with Canalys. “The companyhas suffered in many markets, particularlyChina, losing out to other Asian vendors suchas Xiaomi, and most recently Apple.”Gartner’s Zimmermann suggested that the
new Samsung device could well be compatiblewith the Gear VR headset, expanding usage ofthe device to virtual reality.It would also make sense for Microsoft to
launch a flagship handset at the event. In2014, it acquired the devices business ofNokia, before dropping the well-knownFinnish brand from its smartphone line.Zimmermann expects Microsoft’s activities
to be pitched at the midrange, to help expandits market penetration. A new device couldwell include high-end imaging as adifferentiating feature – something seen inprevious Nokia devices.HTC is another player likely to want to
make a splash in Barcelona. BothZimmermann and Kempton suggested thatthe Taiwanese company could launch twoversions of its flagship One (M9) smartphonewith different screen sizes. Kempton commented that past versions of
the One have been “impressive” smartphonesbut have been let down by their cameras. Hetherefore expects this feature to be much-improved on the M9, in order to address thisarea of weakness and boost sales figures.Announcements are also expected from
vendors including Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo andTCL/Alcatel OneTouch, although it is lessclear if Sony intends making a splash.Kempton also believes LG may wait until
after MWC to launch its G4, “given the overkillof smartphone announcements” at the event.Away from the big names, Zimmermann
suggested that newer operating systems suchas Sailfish OS, Firefox OS and Ubuntu couldwell feature on devices launched in Barcelona– the first Ubuntu device, from vendor BQ,was unveiled in the run-up to the show.
Mobile World Congress returns to Barcelona for the tenth year, and the thirdat the Gran Via venue. It has continued to thrive since it moved from FiraMontjuic in 2013, with more than 85,000 registered attendees and 1,800exhibiting companies in 2014. With new energy coming from the Internet ofThings, connected cars and wearable devices – along with the increasingimpact of internet players – MWC is, more than ever, a key date in the techcalendar. PROGRESS AROUND WEARABLESWearables should once again be a majortalking point at MWC. With Apple Watch dueto reach the market this year, rivals will bekeen to set out their stalls early, especially inthe design stakes.“With the Apple Watch coming out in April we
need to have some strong products in themarket,” noted Gartner’s Annette Zimmermann. Canalys’ Kempton said wearables are likely
to continue to focus on health and fitness,with vendors “increasingly attempting tosimplify and advance the wearables market,which is still evolving and hasn’t quite workedout what it really offers above and beyond asmart device”.Zimmermann expects MWC 2015 to see
many vendors announce next-generationversions of existing devices, and for AndroidWear to be more prominent. Samsung will probably launch new
versions of its Tizen-powered Gear, as it didin 2014, while Sony and Huawei may updatetheir wearable offerings. Kempton expects HTC to join the
wearables fray, but noted that if the companyis to capitalise on the market it needs to offer“something unique and innovative”.“Given that HTC partnered with the
sportswear brand Under Armour (at CES2015), it is almost certainly going to be
extremely health and fitness focused, andlikely a basic band,” he noted.The Canalys analyst also believes Huawei
could update its smartwatch and smart bandofferings using Google’s Android Wear platform.And Microsoft may also update on its
wearables strategy, following the recentunveiling of its Band health activity tracker.Zimmermann also suggested that there
could be some new products from companiesoutside the mobile industry. “There areaccessory companies, companies in thefashion industry and start-ups who could beannouncing new products,” she said.
THE PATH TO 5GInterest in the network technologies thatwill follow 4G has been growing over thepast year.LTE is now widely deployed in many
developed markets and is becoming a featurein some of the less mature territories. Despite5G technology not yet being standardised andunlikely to be ready for half a decade, manyin the industry are ready to talk.The CEOs of Ericsson and Huawei are
taking to the stage in Barcelona, and it’s likelythat both will address the hype around 5G byoutlining what they believe will be the nextshift in network technology.Hans Vestberg, CEO of Ericsson, has
emphasised the new services that are beingenabled by developments in networktechnology, and it would therefore be nosurprise if this is where he focuses hispresentation.Huawei’s deputy chairman and rotating
CEO, Ken Hu, could well cover the company’splans around an interim technology it iscurrently calling 4.5G.The Chinese company said in November
last year that it will finalise the name of theemerging technology it is working on in thefirst quarter of the year (a timeframe which
MWC falls into), and is targeting acommercial product launch in 2016.However, Current Analysis’ Mohr-McClune
doubts whether the developments in the 5Gspace will be significant: “There’s so muchnoise, contention and politics in the 5G spaceright now, I really wouldn’t be surprised if weall came home from Barcelona no wiser thanwhen we arrived,” she observed.
MULTIPLAY AND CONTENTSTRATEGIESMany telecoms companies are now pursuingmulti-play strategies in which they offer anumber of services, including mobile andfixed voice services, broadband and pay-TV.Vodafone has been active in this market
with several high profile acquisitions inEurope, while the deal between BT and EE inthe UK will also create a quadplaypowerhouse.It would therefore be a major surprise if
this isn’t a hot topic when executives from themajor mobile operators assemble at MWC.Paolo Pescatore, director for media at CCS
Insight, noted that industry developments inEurope “underline the importance of offeringa multiplay package” with service providerslooking to reduce churn and increaserevenue.CCS Insight research suggests that
consumers are interested in signing up tocompanies offering this range ofcommunication and media services if theiroffering is good value.Pescatore suggested that the appetite for
multiplay services may also be driven by peopleowning an increasing number of devices.“The more devices people own, the more
likely they will want to buy all of theirservices and connectivity from the sameprovider. But providers need to tread carefullyas there are still many challenges ahead,” hecommented.
The analyst also noted that as well as theaforementioned quadplay services, providerscould offer products around connected cars,home automation and surveillance.“We are already seeing some of these
services being bundled into specific packagestoday. And it won’t be long before providerscreate even bigger bundles of things,” he said.
ONE LAST THING…Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is returningto MWC after last year’s debut, when he setout his vision to connect the billions ofpeople around the world that don’t alreadyhave access to the internet. Since then, the social networking giant has
partnered with several operators to launch itsInternet.org app, which offers free internetservices, in several emerging markets. And like Google, the company is working
on other technologies to increase theavailability of the internet, including dronesand satellites. It will be fascinating to hear how
Zuckerberg feels his vision is progressing andwhat plans he has for Facebook in the future.

Research – Mobility:Why Your Customers Aren’tSatisfied and What to Do About It

In the application economy, simplyproviding the next killer app is no longerenough. Consumers’ expectations have
never been higher, and you can lose acustomer in a split second if you have notfocused on optimizing the entire customerexperience.CA technologies recently sponsored
research company Vanson Bourne to conducta global survey of 1,425 senior IT andbusiness executives on their mobilityinitiatives. The results revealed that overalluser satisfaction with mobility efforts to dateremains low: respondents report that only20% of their customers are completelysatisfied with their experiences with mobility.The most important result is what
organizations are actually doing to meetthese challenges: implementing a moreholistic approach to enterprise-wide mobility.In fact, 40% of respondents have alreadyadopted enterprise mobility and another 47%plan to in the next two years.By taking a holistic approach to improving
and securing the overall end-to-end mobileexperience, organizations are reaping hugerewards:
• Enterprise mobility adopters report sixtimes more end users who are completelysatisfied with their mobility products orservices.
• Twice as many enterprise mobilityadopters have already seen animprovement in overall user experience.
• Enterprise mobility adopters have seen a24% revenue increase from customer-facing mobility apps and a 25%improvement in the overall customerexperience.
The research proves a few critical pointsabout mobility. For one, optimization of theoverall end-user and customer mobileexperience is the most important thing youcan focus on for success in the application
economy. And two, the best way to achievethis is to implement an enterprise-wideapproach to mobility.
UNDERSTAND THE CUSTOMEREXPERIENCE. To truly deliver a quality mobile experience,IT and the business must know how thecustomer interfaces with the app and howwell the app responds to customer demand.Learn, understand and try to experience whatyour customers are experiencing.
DEFINE CUSTOMER-DRIVEN RESULTS. Do you want more customers using yourservices? Do you want to deliver more appsor more feature releases to existing apps?Businesses must understand the goals of theirmobility efforts to better design the enterprisestrategy.
DEVELOP AN ENTERPRISE MOBILITYSTRATEGY. It’s clear mobility projects cannot thrive in anad hoc environment—they must beintegrated across and baked into all IT andbusiness endeavors from the start. Asuccessful enterprise mobility strategy willencompass managing the data from the backend to the user device.
IDENTIFY AND NURTURE MOBILITYTALENT. To drive an enterprise mobility strategy, ITorganizations must be equipped with the skillsneeded to not only develop mobile apps andservices but also the talent to envision howmobility could enhance existing applications.

Mobile Explorers Club is our new and improved youth programme, bringing a Mobile World experienceto children of registered congress attendees. Previously known as mYouth Camp, the new andimproved Mobile Explorers Club offers excitement, education, fun and friendship to children aged 8-15years. Explorers will learn new skills and be able to discover the world of mobile and technology. Theprogramme is designed to build confidence and inspire children to learn more about themselves andthe world around them, with focus on mobile and technology.
Mobile Explorers Club will be held throughout Congress, within Fira Gran Via, for 8 to 15-year-oldchildren. The Club will operate across all four event days, providing a variety of activities to educateand entertain children while their parents attend the event.
