Editor’s Note

Its finally here. The Expert point of view. That’s what I was going to call it. But I fol-low what the fan fondly call the community. MW Family.

I wasn’t sure it was going to get started. From the time we started the Mwanawanga fo-rum in 2011, I knew at one point we would need to have some expert advise on some of the issues discussed on the facebook wall. What I wasn’t sure about was when.

After putting if off for various reasons on several occasions, we decided to just go fro it. I sincerely hope this publication will be as helpful and useful to the readers as our facebook forum has been.

Although the center of this publication is to give expert point of view to some forum questions, we add other things to make it more like a maga-zine like the pregnant mom essentials in the shopping section and the recipes in the food corner.

Your critique and comments are invited and welcome.

Editor,

Susan.

Our favourite shopping items for a pregnant mom

An oil or cream to rub on your growing tummy for increased skin elasticity and less stretch marks. We like tissue oil from Johnson’s

Celebrities may wear super high heels while pregnant but nothing beats comfort so flats are a must have for a preg-nant mama

At least one comfy maxi dress either colourful or mono-chrome

Have at least one pair of comfortable maternity trou-sers or leggings. Change the look with different tops and accessories

Last but not least, have a go-to for those nasty nausea moments, try out different remedies and stick to what works. The mama lollies have ginger, it works for some

Q. What commonly consumed local foods must a pregnant woman avoid and why?

Q. How can a discordant couple have a child while minimizing the risk of HIV infection? To minimize risk of HIV to negative spouse , a discordant couple have to make sure that the HIV positive partner receives effective antiretroviral treatment if CD 4 count is below 350. This can reduce risk of infection up to 90%. Secondly – use of condoms during routine sex practice minimizing risk of HIV. If male partner Circumcised it will reduce transmission of HIV virus up to 60 %. When time comes to have a baby, couples should consult their Gy-necologist to find out about ovulation date, which is most favorable for conception.

It is important for the couple to know their ovulation calendar so as to

know the best days to try for a baby

Avoid undercooked meat, poultry and eggs and unpasteurized foods like low fat dairy products During pregnancy you are at increased risk of bacterial food poisoning. Your reaction might be more severe if your weren’t pregnant. During pregnancy food should be rich in pro-

teins,

minerals and vitamins.

Supplements may be taken according to advise

of your doctor or gynecologist

Is it safe to exercise during pregnancy?

The answer is yes and no. This is the case simply because each pregnancy is unique and has its

individual risk factors. The other reason is that not all forms of exercise are ok for a pregnant woman.

For this reason, every expectant mother should consult her doctor to find out if for her particular pregnancy

it is safe to exercise or not.

What are some of the benefits of exercise during pregnancy?

You will sleep better and feel less fatigue during your pregnancy

You will have better and quicker recovery after delivery

You will have reduced risk of gestational diabetes

You will have less back ache during your pregnancy

You will have shorter labour. This is not a guarantee but studies indicate that women who exercise during pregnancy tend to experience shorter labour

You will be happier generally due to the endorphins that are generated during exercise

You will have better quality of sleep provided you don’t exercise right before sleeping

Some simple exercises for you

Swimming is great a because it is low-impact and works many muscles at the same time.

Walking is also great and you get some extra fresh air while at it.

Simple stretching of arms and legs is another exercise you can do right in your home.
