QUICK TAKE
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Equity market valuations are broadly reasonable adjusted for the cyclical low in earnings and potential for revival going forward.
We remain bullish on equities from a medium to long term perspective
Investors are suggested to have their asset allocation plan based on one’s risk appetite and future goals in life.
MARKET
CORPORATE
Improving global sentiment and strong earnings across sectors powered markets to lifetime highs. Frontline indices S&P BSE Sensex & NIFTY 50 were up 2.8% & 2.9% for the month respectively. NIFTY Midcap 100 and NIFTY Smallcap 100 indices saw a jump of 5.5% & 2.7% respectively. FPIs continued to be active buyers with net investments of ̀ 5,146 Cr across equity and debt markets.
1QF19 saw strong revenue growth trends across sectors. Breadth in revenue and net profit growth improved. NIFTY 50 companies' revenue and net profit growth was 17% and 4% YoY respectively. Excluding SBI and Tata Motors, revenue and net profit growth stood at 24% and 20% YoY. A snapshot of industry results is below.

Consumer price inflation in July rose 4.2 percent compared with the same month last year, declining from the five-month high of 5.0 percent in June. Retail inflation cooled more than expected in July due to subdued food prices after the Monetary Policy Committee raised interest rates for the second straight time.
Despite global tensions, India continues to remain largely unaffected in the global context. The Indian rupee fell to an all-time low of 70.85. In comparison with currencies of its trading partners, the Indian rupee continues to remain strong on a relative basis. Oil prices have remained at the US$70/bbl which has been budgeted for by the government. Any further jumps in Crude could be a cause for concern for both the RBI and the government.
High frequency indicators are consistent with growth recovery gathering pace in Q2 2018 and Q3 2018. Consumption growth remains the key driver, while exports growth has remained robust. On the investment side, capital goods imports and order inflows of engineering and construction companies indicate a nascent recovery.
Rural and consumption stories continue to remain attractive with a long term perspective. Here we are currently focusing on market place disruptors. There are two types of disruptors, Traditional bellwethers looking to reinvent the market place and new disruptors which enter the markets and change the way the industry does business. Our investment focus continues to remain quality centric.
Going-forward, we continue to expect elevated volatility levels in the equity markets and hence advise investors to look at equity allocations from a medium to long term investment horizon. Systematic investments into equity products could also help investors ride out short term volatility.

7.95%. The market took positives from the largely in-line RBI policy minutes. The minutes of the August MPC meeting reinstated the underlying inflationary risk fears as output gap continues to close.
INR at new all-time Low: The INR touched a new low of 70.9 this month in line with other EM currencies. The RBI did intervene in the forex market cushioning the fall. However, the RBI understands that the Rupee may be somewhat overvalued on an REER basis, but with elections due next year they may not be willing to tolerate a sharp depreciation. The INR weakness despite this level of intervention suggests RBI will remain quite hawkish in the near term.
Inflation – A Pullback: Consumer price inflation in July rose 4.2% compared with the same month last year, retreating from the five-month high of 5.0% in June. Inflation continues to undershoot RBI's forecast. RBI expects 4.6% average inflation for Q2 FY 19. The next two prints are likely to be lower on account of a strong base. Thus RBI may well have to slightly walk back its hawkishness on the inflation front.
RBI Policy Stance: The RBI is worried that inflation will sequentially accelerate to 5% by June next year. This is basis the increase in Minimum Support Prices of key crops and potentially some imported inflation thanks to oil and the Rupee.
Global Events: The US Fed highlighted to investors that it`s policy action was data dependent and gradual keeping in mind the health of the US economy. The Turkish lira continued its downward descent in line with the weak EM currencies and bonds. Argentina approached the IMF for ‘early’ economic support on the back of worsening economic conditions.
The fairly large intervention in forex markets has not been completely sterilized. Thus domestic liquidity has tightened. The RBI continues to maintain neutral liquidity conditions in the domestic market. Our expectation is that RBI will have to do a minimum of about 1-1.5 trillion rupees in open market purchases to maintain neutral liquidity from here to March 2019. This expected support from RBI is likely to keep a lid on G-Sec yields.
Fears about tight liquidity (and RBI policy) caused short term rates (money market and short bonds) to spike between April and May. But even as RBI has delivered 50 bps in rate hikes short yields have fallen back. This is now getting repriced.
Short rates especially 3 year corporate bonds are even now acting like the repo rate is 7% with tight liquidity. Thus even with 1-2 more hikes the curve is well positioned to absorb the hikes. Long rates on the other hand cannot take multiple hikes from here. There is the belief in OMO purchases and the belief that RBI will hold the line on 10-year G-Sec breaching the 8% mark. Money market rates have also seen some moderation in the interim. For now, the value is clearly at the short end of the corporate curve (~3-year mark). Currently short bonds offer 175+ basis spreads over operative rates and hence remain conducive for investors on a risk reward basis.
10 Year at 7.95%: Bearish sentiments triggered by a weakening rupee and worsening crude oil prices saw benchmark 10-year G-Sec yields rise to

• INR continues to remain relatively strong on a REER basis. RBI remains cautious of steep corrections.
• The RBI is focused on maintaining a neutral liquidity stance and will focus on OMO`s to manage liquidity and bond yields.
• Long bonds are likely to trade range bound. Short tenor bonds look attractive from a risk reward perspective.
• We continue to advise investors to stay invested in short to medium term strategies and actively look at credit funds

Quick Take - Equity
•
•
•
Equity market valuations are broadly reasonable adjusted for the cyclical low in earnings and potential for revival going forward.
We remain bullish on equities from a medium to long term perspective
Investors are suggested to have their asset allocation plan based on one’s risk appetite and future goals in life.
Quick Take - Fixed Income••
••
The RBI is focused on maintaining a neutral liquidity stance and will focus on OMO`s to manage liquidity and bond yields.Long bonds are likely to trade range bound. Short tenor bonds look attractive from a risk reward perspective. We continue to advise investors to stay invested in short to medium term strategies and actively look at credit funds
INR continues to remain relatively strong on a REER basis. RBI remains cautious of steep corrections.

Key highlights
HYBRIDOUTLOOK
SEPTEMBER 2018
Improving global sentiment and strong earnings across sectors powered markets to lifetime highs. Frontline indices S&P BSE Sensex & NIFTY 50 were up 2.8% & 2.9% for the month respectively. NIFTY Midcap 100 and NIFTY Smallcap 100 indices saw a jump of 5.5% & 2.7% respectively. FPIs continued to be active buyers with net investments of Rs 5,146 Cr across equity and debt markets.
• 10 Year at 7.95%: Bearish sentiments triggered by a weakening rupee and worsening crude oil prices saw benchmark 10-year G-Sec yields rise to 7.95%. The market took positives from the largely in-line RBI policy minutes. The minutes of the August MPC meeting reinstated the underlying inflationary risk fears as output gap continues to close.
• INR at new all-time Low: The INR touched a new low of 70.9 this month in line with other EM currencies.
• Inflation – A Pullback: Consumer price inflation in July rose 4.2% compared with the same month last year, retreating from the five-month high of 5.0% in June. Inflation continues to undershoot RBI's forecast. RBI expects 4.6% average inflation for Q2 FY 19. The next two prints are likely to be lower on account of a strong base. Thus RBI may well have to slightly walk back its hawkishness on the inflation front.
• RBI Policy Stance: The RBI is worried that inflation will sequentially accelerate to 5% by June next year. This is basis the increase in Minimum Support Prices of key crops and potentially some imported inflation thanks to oil and the Rupee.
• Global Events: The US Fed highlighted to investors that it`s policy action was data dependent and gradual keeping in mind the health of the US economy. The Turkish lira continued its downward descent in line with the weak EM currencies and bonds. Argentina approached the IMF for ‘early’ economic support on the back of worsening economic conditions.
Key Events During the Month
Market View
Equity Markets
Rural and consumption stories continue to remain attractive with a long term perspective. Here we are currently focusing on market place disruptors. There are two types of disruptors, Traditional bellwethers looking to reinvent the market place and new disruptors which enter the markets and change the way the industry does business. Our investment focus continues to remain quality centric.
Going-forward, we continue to expect elevated volatility levels in the equity markets and hence advise investors to look at equity allocations from a medium to long term investment horizon. Systematic investments into equity products could also help investors ride out short term volatility.
Debt Markets
