• On September 3, 2006, AFI revealed the top 25 movie musicals of all time in The Big Picture -- AFI's Greatest Movie Musicals, a one night only presentation produced by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association in cooperation with AFI. A jury of over 500 film artists, composers, musicians, critics and historians selected the Gene Kelly song-and-dance classic SINGIN' IN THE RAIN as the most memorable movie musical of all time. Rounding off the top 10 were movie musicals from the 1930s to today, including:

Singing in the rain is about the movement of going from silent movement to sound movies.

The main character Don Lockwood, played by Gene Kelly, is a silent movie star having to make his move into the sound movies.

According to Brett C. Stockdill, the AIDS movement, particularly in the late 1980s and continuing through the early 1990s, is characterized as a movement “because it was composed of a diverse set of people whose needs were not being met by existing dominant institutions, such as the government, the medical establishment, and pharmaceutical corporations, and who used ‘politics by other means’ to further their collective interests.”

Use in Classroom• Musicals have great music to play for

children. The different types give the students a wide variety to dance along to. Many songs change tempo. The students can move to the music and display how it makes them feel.

• Teachers can show students an example of musicals and then arrange a musical for the class to put on for parents or the school.
