Define “Musical Instrument”

• A musical instrument is a device created or adapted to make musical sounds. In principle, any object that produces sound can be a musical instrument

Classification in the Instruments

• There are 5 types of instruments

• They are 1. Stringed Instruments

2. Wind Instruments

3. Percussion Instruments

4. Brass Instruments

5. Electronic Instruments

Lets see Stringed Instruments

• String instruments have strings made up of steel or nylon wire can be either plucked or played with a bow.

• Examples- Acoustic Guitars with steel strings

Classical Guitars with Nylon strings Banjo, Mandolin, veena, sitar, sarangi, Dilruba, sarod etc….

Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass played with a Bow.

Now Lets See Wind Instruments

• Wind instrument is a musical instrument that contains some type of resonator (usually a tube), in which a column of air is set into vibration by the player.

Example: Flute, Saxophone, Clarinets, oboe, Nadaswaram, Snake charmer’s Pipe( Makudi)

Now Percussion Instruments

• A percussion instrument is a musical instrument that is sounded by being struck or scraped by a beater.

Example: Tavil, Drum kit, Kettle Drum, Xylophone, Kanjira, Dholak, Mrudangam,

Tabla, triangle, Timpani, jaltarang, Etc…..

• An instrument, made of brass or other metal, sound is produced through vibration of the lips and adjustment of the length of the sound tube by means of valves or a slide.

Examples : Trumpet, French Horn, Bugle, Trombone, Euphonium,Saxophone Cymbals etc…..
