An evening with David Nason at the piano Ivor Novello, “Man of the Theatre”

David Nason is a Canon and Priest Vicar of Chichester Cathedral. He is also SeniorMaster and Chaplain at the Prebendal School, the Cathedral’s Choir School wherehe teaches Religious Studies. He started to learn to play the piano at a very earlyage and soon found that his interest lay in the realms of light music, including IvorNovello. He has presented ‘Ivor Novello – Man of the Theatre’ on many occasionsand in many venues, including Ivor’s homeland of Wales.

Ivor Novello dominated the British theatre scene for most of the first half of the20th century. From a very young age he was an adored matinée idol appearing innumerous films and plays most of which he had written himself. In 1935 he wrotethe first of the great musicals for which he is remembered today. In every sense ofthe word Ivor Novello was truly a man of the theatre.

‘Free Your Playing’ A Workshop by Martin Lawrence

Over many years of being in the firing line on stages around the world – the RoyalFestival Hall, Vienna Musikverein, Sydney Opera House..., Martin has beenexperimenting with different physical and mental approaches. In performance, theonly time is now! The only time you can find out whether your approach works isright now, in the firing line in performance.

In the middle of performances of the most delicate, technically challenging music, with the most famous conductors and the most discerning audiences, Martin hasbeen thinking. In the actual moment of a solo, about the position of his left middletoe, or trying not to concentrate, or imagining that he is personally responsible forthe actions of everyone in the room, or pretending to be someone else, or tryingto play the piece incorrectly or not at all. Martin has tried out being as tense as

possible, or so relaxed he might fall off his chair. He has prepared for a concertby doing yoga, shouting, drinking, sleeping, running, meditating... Why?

Because he is trying to find a way of performing that brings the best out ofhimself and out of the music, to make it enjoyable and fulfilling, and he iswilling to do some wacky things to see if they work.

But these ideas don't just come from anywhere. Martin has studiedmassage, yoga, post-Jungian psychology, Alexander Technique,Taoism and Buddhism. He is interested in the body's intelligence overthe mind's intelligence.

Martin has come to some conclusion about what works. Come andjoin him for a talk, demonstrations, and experience some of hisideas. It will have a workshop element so please bring along

something to play, he might be able to sort out your anxieties andtensions!

The University's newest orchestra begins its life with these concerts featuring someof the most beautiful music ever written. Haydn and his orchestra were subjects ofthe Prince of Esterhazy. Haydn and the court orchestra were at the Prince'ssummer palace in Esterhaza. The stay there had been longer than expected andmost of the musicians had been forced to leave their wives back at home inEisenstadt, so in the last movement of the symphony, Haydn subtly hinted to hispatron that perhaps he might like to allow the musicians to return home; during thefinal adagio each musician stops playing, snuffs out the candle on his music stand, and leaves in turn, so that at the end, there are just two violins left. Prince Esterhazyseems to have understood the message: the court returned to Eisenstadt the dayfollowing the performance.

The Chapel OrganThe organ hanging on the Chapel’s west wall looks very much part of the fabric ofthe 1960s building, but its pipework is actually much older. When the originalBishop Otter Chapel was erected in the mid nineteenth century, J W Walkerinstalled a small pipe organ, subsequently enlarged when the old chapel was itselfextended to accommodate a growing population of students. The instrument wasmoved to the current chapel by Walkers and substantially remodelled as anextension organ – unusually large with six ranks – where its excellent elevatedposition compensated acoustically for its tonal limitations. Some ten years ago the1960s electronics began to show their age and the console from which the organwas played became increasingly unreliable. What was essentially a very small organcould also not hope to support the musical needs of a rapidly growing musicdepartment, now offering the highest standards of cathedral singing and oratorioperformance, as well as the teaching of undergraduate organ students.

The Makin Organ Company have now produced a solution which retains theintegrity of Walker’s mid-twentieth century scheme, combining a new detachedconsole with additional digital resources to produce a much larger and more capableinstrument. Each digital stop is sampled (each note individually recorded from life)and has been selected from some of the most beautiful examples of Willis, Harrisonand Cavaillé-Col organ building. The result is a scheme which mirrors an imaginedhistory for the period from around 1920 to the present day, showing the evolutionof a Victorian instrument through succeeding rebuilds.

The university is grateful to the Bishop Otter Trust whose financial support hasmade this exciting project possible.
