Simon Napier-Bell, Dan Willson and The Jellyman’s Daughter to Appear at 'Born To Be Wide' Talk Show at The Edinburgh International Book Festival

Veteran artist manager and author, Simon Napier-Bell, is set to make his Scottish debut at a special evening hosted by leading music industry event organisation, Born To Be Wide, and the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

The free talk show takes place from 9-11pm on Monday 18 August at the Guardian Spiegel Tent as part of the Jura Unbound programme, and is hosted by journalist and Born To Be Wide co-Director, Olaf Furniss. He will also interview Dan Willson [aka Withered Hand] - who has been described as the “UK’s best lyricist” - about his approach to song-writing and The Jellyman’s Daughter will perform live. Napier-Bell will talk about his career and what led him to write his latest book, Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay, the world’s first definitive account of the music industry, which goes back 300 years. The former manager of acts including The Yarbirds, Boney M, Japan, Marc Bolan and Wham! will also discuss why he opted to crowd-source his latest publication, enlisting the support of an impressive cast of music industry figures and writers. These include Jeff Beck, Simon Cowell, Julie Birchill, Mark Knopfler, Miles Copeland and Vicky Wickham. “Olaf first invited me to speak at a Born To Be Wide event three years ago, and I am delighted to finally be able to accept the invitation,” says Napier-Bell, who will fly in from his home in Thailand to take part in the evening. “I am very much looking forward to making my debut at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.” Napier-Bell’s previous works were based on his own experience in the

recording industry, and provide an entertaining insight into different areas of the business. His first book, You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me focused on the swinging 60s and was followed by Black Vinyl, White Powder, which explored the role of sex and drugs in British popular music. Meanwhile, I'm Coming To Take You To Lunch, recounts how Napier-Bell wined and dined Communist Party officials to ensure Wham! became the first western pop act to play in China. “There are several authors who have written a great book about the music business, but only Simon has written four,” says Born To Be Wide’s Furniss. “Combined with Dan Willson and The Jellyman’s Daughter, the evening promises to provide a fantastic insight into music-related writing, and will be accompanied by some wonderful musical interludes.” Following the Born To Be Wide Talk Show, Napier-Bell will sign copies of his books, with DJs drawn from the Scottish music scene, providing background music. Born To Be Wide is a Community Interest Company which organises music business events, including seminar and social nights, and the annual Edinburgh Night, which provides a snapshot of Scottish acts performing during the Fringe. In 2010 it launched the Wide Days convention in Edinburgh, which in May 2014 was voted Best Networking Event/Service at the Yearly Music Convention Awards at The Great Escape. In 2013 the company launched Off The Record, a series of daytime youth events providing 14-25 year-olds with advice from music industry professionals on topics including organising and getting gigs, releasing music and promotion. www.borntobewide.co.uk www.facebook.com/borntobewide https://twitter.com/borntobewide

A free one-day training seminar for music companies, hosted jointly by the BPI and the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA), will take place in Glasgow on Thursday 21 August, the two music organisations have announced. The first half of the event - which will be for BPI and SMIA Members Only - will see delegates receive a digital marketing master class hosted by Music Ally. This workshop will cover how to be Socially Savvy and make the most of YouTube. Social Savvy will cover the finer details of all the major social media platforms and will provide tips and tricks on how to get profiles looking enticing in no time. The YouTube session will look at how to get the most out of a channel, how to optimise videos and, importantly, how to monetise your artists’ view count. Looking forward to the event, BPI Director of Independent Membership, Chris Tams, said: “Now is a fantastic time to be venturing up to Glasgow - we hope to capture the excitement and creativity that is bubbling in the city as a result of the Commonwealth Games and equip music businesses with the knowledge they need to make more of the opportunities available to them. We want Scottish music companies to be aware of and tap into the support on offer. “This event is just a taster of what we hope to deliver in Scotland in the year ahead through training initiatives, educational support and – of course – The Big Music Project which will provide further funding for internships to independent companies across the nation. “It’s great to be partnering with the SMIA and we hope that this joint initiative can bring added value to both organisations’ memberships.” The second half of the event – open to all music companies in Scotland and the North of England - will comprise a content protection session delivered by BPI’s in-house Anti-Piracy Team and a funding workshop, with a particular focus on how to apply for funding under the Music Export Growth Scheme. The Music Export Growth Scheme offers grants ranging from £5,000 - £50,000 to UK-registered independent music companies to assist them with marketing campaigns when looking to introduce successful UK music projects overseas.

Voicing his support for the joint partnership, Stewart Henderson, Chair of the SMIA and Director of Glasgow-based record label Chemikal Underground, said: "It's more important than ever that

musicians are given as much support and assistance as possible in making a sustainable career out of their art. Effectively protecting their copyright and learning more about the support networks and funding opportunities available to them will help them along that road and the SMIA is delighted to partner with the BPI in delivering this seminar.

“The support currently being offered by the BPI through their Music Export Growth Scheme is a progressive example of how targeted funding for independents in the international markets can help artists in the key early stages of their international development. Chemikal Underground was delighted to have benefitted from this scheme for our own artist Holy Mountain and it's proved invaluable." The BPI was formed in 1973 and is the representative voice of the UK recorded music business. As a trade organisation we promote recorded music in the UK and worldwide and champion the rights and interests of a broad range of members, including hundreds of independent music labels and companies and the UK’s three major record company groups – Sony Music Entertainment UK, Universal Music UK and Warner Music UK. In 2013 our members accounted for approximately 90% of all recorded music purchased in the UK – the world’s fourth largest music market – as well as 1 in 8 albums sold around the globe. The event is free for all attendees and will be held in the city centre at Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts. Early booking is advised as places are limited. For more details or to register interest in the event, contact Chris Tams, BPI Director of Independent Membership at [email protected] www.bpi.co.uk www.smia.org.uk https://twitter.com/TheSMIA https://twitter.com/BPI_Music

Dundee 'Musician’s Award' Applications Now Open - Grants up to £500 available

Closing date 5 September : Download Application Form @

www.dundeemusiciansaward.co.uk

A number of grants, up to a maximum of £500, are available. The Award, staged by Leisure and Culture Dundee, was established in 2008 to support the work of outstanding Dundee-based musicians. It supports projects that look at creative development through collaboration and working with new partners, or new producers. There does not have to be a recording or gig at the end: the creative process is valid enough. Support will be for applications that stimulate fresh and innovative work (in any genre), to give musicians time to research, experiment and explore. Applications can also be made to attend industry showcases or network events. A successful recipient of the Award, Dundee band The Mirror Trap have been supporting emo rock giants Placebo on their eight-date arena tour of Russia. Wayfaring Strangers: The Musical Voyage from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia mountains by Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr - Foreword by Dolly Parton

Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a steady stream of Scots migrated to Ulster and eventually onward across the Atlantic to resettle in the United States. Many of these Scots-Irish immigrants made their way into the mountains of the southern Appalachian region. They brought with them a wealth of traditional ballads and tunes from the UK and Ireland, a carrying stream that merged with sounds and songs of English, German, Welsh, African American, French and Cherokee origin. Their enduring legacy of music flows today from Appalachia back to Ireland and Scotland and around the globe. In the fascinating and beautifully-illustrated Wayfaring Strangers, due to be published in October, Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr guide the reader on a musical voyage across oceans capturing along the way the stories of the people, the times, and the songs as they have altered and developed across the centuries. Laments and ancient ballads mourn imminent departures, lively dance tunes bring cheer on the long journey over sea, homesick and hopeful songs help keep spirits high and new sounds emerge as cherished ballads are adapted to new lifestyles. At the heart of them all is a musical tradition that continues to impact musicians today.

Incorporating interviews with modern-day songwriters whose own family stories help bring history to life, drawing on insights from key contributors to the living tradition on both sides of the Atlantic, and including a CD featuring 20 songs by musicians profiled in the book, including Dolly Parton, Dougie MacLean, Cara Dillon and Sheila Kay Adams, this enchanting and important book tells the story of migration in a way words alone never could and is a must for traditional music-lovers world-wide. Scotland-based Fiona Ritchie is the founder, producer and host of the US’s National Public Radio’s The Thistle & Shamrock, a show of music from Celtic roots. This year, she will receive an MBE from the Queen in recognition of her services to broadcasting and Scottish traditional music. Doug Orr is president emeritus of Warren Wilson College, where he founded the Swannanoa Gathering music workshops. www.facebook.com/WayfaringStrangersBook

"Songs can take us on extraordinary journeys. They respect neither border nor time, and by following them, we can chart the movement of generations of people. In Wayfaring Strangers, Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr take a long look at this story using Scottish songs as their compass. It's a fascinating and often surprising ride." Cerys Matthews

Scottish Ensemble musicians join with string players from across the commonwealth to create a unique orchestra

Celebrating this summers Commonwealth Games, 14 musicians from Scottish Ensemble will be joined by 14 of the most talented pre-professional string players from across the Commonwealth to create a unique double string orchestra: Commonwealth Strings. From 26-30 August they will perform at Edinburgh International Festival, Dundee’s Caird Hall, Inverness’ Eden Court Theatre, and at Aldeburgh’s Snape Proms in Suffolk. The concerts form part of Scottish Ensemble’s celebratory JM 10 Season which marks Jonathan Morton’s 10th anniversary as Leader and Artistic Director. Commonwealth Strings builds on SE’s commitment to developing the next generation of leading string players from Scotland and across the world. The Commonwealth Strings project was created in response to SE’s ambitions to mark the year of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It grew from a conversation with EIF about the success of SE’s current work with young string players from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The internationalisation of the project was envisaged to showcase emerging talent from the Commonwealth, celebrating music-making from across these countries and providing an important professional development opportunity for young musicians. Royal Over-Seas Arts have a long and proud history of supporting young musicians from across the Commonwealth. They hold an annual competition - ROSL Annual Music Competition – and also provide ROSL Commonwealth Music Scholarships. ROSL Arts were the ideal partner for this project with their strong links across the Commonwealth and knowledge of its musicians. They have also generously supported the travel costs of the young musicians. The artistic inspiration for the project is Tippett’s Concerto for Double String Orchestra, which will close the programme, and provides the line-up: the 14 musicians of Scottish Ensemble will be joined by an equal line-up of 14 young Commonwealth musicians: 4.4.3.2.1. Music featured in the programme includes some of the greatest British string music and

rich, evocative Antipodean music. At the EIF concert SE will be joined by internationally-renowned mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly. She will perform a new commission for string orchestra and mezzo-soprano by New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. Relict Furies marks the centenary of WW1 and pays tribute to the fallen men of the Battle of Passchendaele, but the wider concept of the piece reflects on the unseen effects on families in war. Commonwealth Strings will begin at EIF with a concert on Tuesday 26 August (11am) before touring to Inverness, Wednesday 27 August; Dundee, Thursday 28 August; and finish at Aldeburgh’s Snape Proms, Saturday 30 August. The EIF performance will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Scottish Ensemble Chief Executive Thorben Dittes said: "Scottish Ensemble is committed to supporting the development to young string players in Scotland, and throughout the world. Our partnership with Edinburgh International Festival and the Royal Over-Seas League has enabled us to assemble some of the finest young string talent from throughout the Commonwealth for an ambitious celebration of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. The forming of this unique double string orchestra to perform music from the Commonwealth underlines our commitment to expanding the string repertoire; our creative, thought-provoking approach to programming; our desire to create international connections from Scotland; and our investment in the next generation of string talent." Re-defining the string orchestra, Scottish Ensemble (SE) inspires audiences in the UK and beyond with vibrant performances which are powerful, challenging and rewarding experiences. The UK’s only professional string orchestra is based in Glasgow and is built around a core of 12 outstanding string players who perform together under Artistic Director Jonathan Morton.

'My First Music' the promoters of Kilmarnock and Glasgow's 'Dirty Weekender' is giving one lucky Scottish band / artist the opportunity to support Brit Pop legends CAST on 11 December at Glasgow’s top music venue, The Garage. Part of the mid-nineties movement in the UK, CAST shot to fame in July 1995 when their debut single “Fine Time” entered the charts at number 17. October 1995 saw the Liverpudlian rockers release their debut album “All change” which featured hit songs “Alright”, “Promised land” and “Sandstorm”. “All Change” was released through Polydor and went down in Polydor’s history books as the fastest selling debut album on their label. In August 2001 the band split but June 2010 seen John Power, the bands front man undertake a “Cast Acoustic show” tour, shortly after the tour began NME announced that the band were getting back together and had plans to release new material and play a full UK tour. To support these legendary rockers 'My First Music' hosted a Battle of The Bands competition throughout July at Pivo Pivo in Glasgow with the winners getting to support CAST at a guaranteed sell out show. The BOTB Final will take place at Pivo Pivo on 23 August and the runners-up will be offered support slots at the next Glasgow’s Dirty Weekender, in March 2015. "BOTB's are not something I would regularly consider doing but I was inundated with emails from acts looking for the support slot for these gigs. So I thought we would look outside the box at supports.” David Hanvey, My First Music www.facebook.com/mfmpromos https://twitter.com/mfmayrshire

Mythical Creatures + Static Rock + Vida + Calum Frame + Wot.D.Funk

THE FINALISTS Mythical Creatures: From the sludge of Glasgow’s treacherous swine of a music scene ‘The Bear’, ‘The Wizard’, ‘The Wookie’ and ‘The Rabbit’ came together to create an epic psychedelically laced rock and roll backdrop with melodic, left of center social commentary regarding the times we live in. With flood, fire and famine common place among bleak newspaper headlines and mothers praying alike, one unified voice sings and bellows and screeches out against the one percent. This is ‘Mythical Creatures’ and its voice shall be heard. www.facebook.com/MythicalCreaturesBand Static Rock: ‘Every member of the band met at a Music Course in Motherwell College, and since then we’ve attempted to merge our music tastes together and come up with a sound we all took a liking to. When we originally started out, our style was interesting to say the least, but through time we’ve found it easier to create and improve! Every member of our band has great input in every aspect of what brings a band together, and that’s something we’re very proud of!’ www.facebook.com/StaticRock Vida: ‘Vida are a rock and roll band from Alloa, Clackmannanshire in Scotland and consists of Jamie Pollock (lead singer, rhythm guitar), Nathan Evans (lead guitar, backing vocals), Ross McShane (bass guitar) and Jamie Piggot aka Jiggy (drums). Most of the interview had to be done via the medium of ‘messaging’ as many things were getting lost in translation… However, the exchange of Snapchats

showed that Vida really are just typical lads who still play FIFA and took the piss out of my accent.‘ www.facebook.com/CravingKarma Calum Frame: ’Calum Frame has been writing his own material since the age of 16 and, now 20, he has achieved some great things in this time. With 2 EPs and a single being released on itunes he has quickly made a name for himself and was invited to support The Proclaimers in 2012 with his backing band. The development in his work is clear and it seems the only way is up for this exciting young artist. www.facebook.com/calumframemusic Wot.D.Funk: Glasgow based band. The Scottish Music Centre received £93,000 from CashBack for Creativity in 2011/12 which was used to deliver their Hit the Road project, which went nationwide from April 2012 – March 2013, providing young musicians with their first professional touring experiences, in addition to industry workshops and training days covering many areas of the music industry. Through her Cashback for Creativity experience with the Scottish Music Centre, project MusicPlus+ Highlands based self-taught singer/songwriter, Jemma Tweedie gained access to a professional music studio with an experienced producer who helped record her debut single 'All This Fear' which is now available on iTunes. The project enabled her to develop her knowledge and understanding of specialised areas of the industry. She has been able to strengthen her skillset further having the opportunity to work with other musicians and producers of the same age and she is now working on creating new music with some fellow peers she met through the project. Jemma said: “Without Music Plus+ I would never have afforded such an opportunity being a full time university student on a tight budget. Following this I completed a UK tour as a featured artist for Cafe Nero and have played numerous gigs and festivals across the country as well as being nominated as 'best acoustic' act at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards (SAMA's) last year. “The project provides fantastic opportunities to learn valuable information and develop skills with people who share similar interests. I think it is a very special programme as it has helped me achieve things I would never have been able to complete on my own. I would recommend it to anyone starting out or wanting to take their creativity further.” The CashBack for Creativity programme offers a wide range of activities and training opportunities which this year will be expanded to include all art forms including: dance, film, music, visual art, drama and literature, as well as digital media, for young people throughout Scotland, aged 0-25 years. Scottish Music Centre is situated in the City Halls, Candleriggs at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow’s Merchant City, the Scottish Music Centre is a member organisation, registered Scottish Charity and development / resource centre for musicians and infrastructure across Scotland. Scottish Music Centre was founded in 1969 by Glasgow University professor Fred Rimmer and originally named Scottish Music Archive. CELTIC MUSIC RADIO IN FIRST WORLD WAR SONGS TRIBUTE Glasgow-based Celtic Music Radio is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I in song. Presenter, Gordon Hotchkiss has started a six-part series of inserts on songs about the War in his weekly “Wednesday Hotchpotch” programme on Celtic Music Radio at 7.00 pm. “With over one hundred songs, poems and music, this could well be the most comprehensive coverage of music relating to the war presented on radio,” said Gordon. The series will feature a mixture of original songs recorded at the period and more contemporary songs written about the war. The first programme looked at the origins of the war, the early days, recruitment and the European Countries involved. The second explored how it turned into a truly World War featuring, amongst others, songs from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Turkey and the USA. The third on 20 August will concentrate on Scotland’s involvement in the Great War while the following week will look at Ireland’s involvement including the role of the Ulster Volunteers and the Easter Rising in Dublin.

The fifth programme on 3 September examines major battles and opposition to the war including revolution in Russia with the final show (10 September) concentrating on some of the songs sung by the troops and the end of the war. Celtic Music Radio has offered copies of the show to other community radio stations around the UK and it is set to broadcast in Canada. Join Gordon Hotchkiss across Glasgow on 95FM and worldwide at www.celticmusicradio.net on Wednesday evenings at 7.00pm. www.celticmusicradio.net https://twitter.com/celt95fm www.facebook.com/celticmusicradio95FM

Phil & Aly, two of Scotland’s most acclaimed traditional musicians, take to the road once again, following a year of awards and chart success, to delight audiences across Scotland with their masterful, versatile and amusing performances. They have been leading us in the dance on BBC’s live Hogmanay show for over two decades and October 2013 saw the legendary folk duo receive the The Sunday Mail's Great Scot ‘Lifetime Achievement Award'. They have become a national institution with their incomparable mastery of fiddle and accordion, bringing excellence in traditional music to venues across the country. Individually they pursue other ventures in performance, television and education. It is when they tour together that they truly shine with over quarter of a century of well-honed skills and hilarious banter delighting audiences everywhere. Mike Russell wrote of them in The Glasgow Herald “They are probably the best traditional musicians you are ever likely to hear” Both Phil and Aly have ‘many other strings to

their bow” Phil, who is artistic director of Scottish music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, had the

wonderful opportunity this year to perform at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony alongside Nicola Benedetti. He also arranged & co-produced Pumeza Matshikiza’s performance of Freedom Come All Ye. Phil also arranged and co-produced tracks on Nicola Benedetti’s new album ‘Homecoming’, and

works with John Ashton Thomas (Hollywood film Orchestrator and composter) on orchestration and arrangements. This year Phil is also working on a new BBC series on piping. Aly, who now holds 5 honorary Doctor of Music degrees, was honoured in the 2013’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, with a lifetime achievement award. His now world acclaimed “Transatlantic Sessions” will be going network in the USA this year. Aly continues to develop that series, while also touring in the autumn each year as 'Aly Bain, Ale Möller & Bruce Molsky'. www.philandaly.com https://twitter.com/PhilandAly www.facebook.com/pages/Aly-Bain-and-Phil-Cunningham/146659355363333
