Scottish Ensemble Takes Up Residencies

Aberdeen - 21-24 April : Perth - 26-29 April : www.scottishensemble.co.uk

The Scottish Ensemble (SE) returns to Aberdeen and Perth in April 2014 for its second set of residencies in the cities - each one specifically crafted in response to local needs in collaboration with community partners. Since launching its residency programme last year in Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and Perth, SE has seen community engagement increase significantly across each of the cities.

Over four days in each city SE will be involved in an eclectic range of events including: masterclasses and workshops; coaching sessions; free community performances; a piano promenade with pianist Alasdair Beatson, and participatory events including a tea dance.

Each residency culminates with an evening concert. In Aberdeen on Thursday 24 April at the Music Hall the Scottish Variations programme is a contrast of romantic and folk-inspired works from Bohemia by Dvořák and Suk, with contemporary responses to a Gesualdo motet and a traditional Scottish tune.

In Perth on Tuesday 29 April at the Concert Hall - Sally Beamish’s critically acclaimed Seavaigers will feature in a genre-defying collaboration with award-winning duo, fiddler, Chris Stout and

harpist, Catriona McKay. This programme will be repeated at performances in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Both residency concerts in Aberdeen and Perth will premiere a new commission - Scottish Variations – by six of Scotland’s leading composers.

Seven of the UK’s opera companies have joined forces to produce Inside Opera: Live, a unique online event offering unprecedented behind the scenes access and insight into the opera being created and performed in theatres across the country. In a collaboration, the scope of which is a first for the arts, the Companies – Scottish Opera, Northern Ireland Opera, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera, English Touring Opera, Opera North and The Royal Opera – will come together on 10 May as part of a Europe-wide celebration of opera. Designed for anyone who is new to opera, but with obvious appeal for opera fans, this ambitious event will be hosted on YouTube. It combines live streamed and filmed footage to give viewers a chance to experience opera across the UK from the inside, and encourages them to find out about the opera activity on their doorstep. On the day Scottish Opera will be showing a film of the creation of the costumes for Lisa Milne as Donna Elvira in SO’s recent production of Don Giovanni from initial design through construction, fittings, rehearsals through to the first performance. Live activity will have the SO Community Choir gives a performance at Glasgow’s Riverside Museum. It will air specially commissioned behind the scenes films from all the participating companies, live interviews with singers and directors, and live links to rehearsals, backstage and community-based activities. In the course of a packed afternoon, viewers will have the chance to hear from performers just before they go on stage; find out how a singer prepares for a new role; meet the people behind an opera production and learn what they do; see what it takes to make and take an opera out on tour; and understand the skill that goes into making a period costume.

Throughout the event there will also be the opportunity using #insideopera to put questions live via Twitter to the companies’ artistic directors. Since 2007, opera companies from all over Europe have been collaborating on The European Opera Days – an open invitation to discover opera in all its forms on the weekend closest to 9 May, Europe Day. Inside Opera:Live can be seen at www.youtube.com/insideopera from 2pm - 6pm on Saturday 10 May http://scottishopera.org.uk https://twitter.com/ScottishOpera www.facebook.com/pages/Scottish-Opera/125673660782760

The diverse line-up on 6 April showed off the wealth of musical talent coming out of Scotland, and brought together fans of genres such as pop, hip-hop, folk and rock. Enthusiastic New Yorkers packed out the famous Lower East Side 400 capacity venue, part of the former live recording home of RCA Records which has played host to Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, CHVRCHES, Mumford & Sons, Macklemore and Florence & The Machine among others. Nina Nesbitt said: "It's been incredible to come back to play Webster Hall and perform as part of the international Scottish music showcase Caledonia Collective at Scotland Week. The crowd were great, really into the music and the venue is amazing." The LaFontaines were in the city having won the prestigious Big Apple Award, part of the Scottish Music Awards, which each year sees one band or artist sent to New York to play the Caledonia Collective at Scotland Week. The annual award is part of the fundraising events programme for the renowned Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland charity. The LaFontaines lead Singer Kerr Okan said: "We've been in NYC for 3 days now, and it still feels surreal - we played at the Scotland Run in Central Park yesterday morning and then

walked the Tartan Day Parade down 6th Avenue in the afternoon - tonight we played our first ever sell-out show in NYC which has been a huge privilege and all thanks to the Big Apple Award. We're all hugely grateful for the opportunity and can't wait to see what the future brings as a result, and of course playing at the annual Scottish Music Awards in Glasgow at the end of this year. "The work that Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland does to help improve the lives of children and adults with serious illnesses and disabilities is incredible, we hope to help continuing to support the great work they do back in Scotland for years to come." Multi-award winning folk three-piece Lau, performed a heart felt rendition of "Torsa", with their unique sound, it’s

no surprise that the audience were held captive. Accordionist Martin Green said, "It's great to see such contrasting sides of Scotland's music scene on show in NYC - it's a special city, and hugely important for Scotland to be represented in one of the world's most important music and cultural scenes." While in New York hip-hop rap duo Hector Bizerk have been soaking up the culture of the city, taking part in the history of hip-hop tour through Harlem and the Bronx ahead of their gig at Caledonia Collective. Tonight they proved that the genre may have its roots in New York but that the power of music transcends country, with a performance that could well have come from some of the finest hip-hop talents.

Caledonia Collective rock New York at Scotland Week

The 'Caledonia Collective 2014' Nina Nesbitt, The LaFontaines, Lau and Hector Bizerk played a cracking show together at Webster Hall promoting Scottish music.

Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland helps improve the lives of children and adults isolated by disability, trauma or illness. The charity requires £500,000 each year to operate and their aim is to Make Music, Change Lives. The unique qualities of music as therapy can enhance communication, support change and enable people to live more resourcefully and creatively. This April sees a welcome shower of shimmering piano notes over Scotland as the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) premieres a new arrangement of Mozart’s 9th Piano Concerto. The SNJO has invited the superbly gifted pianist, Makoto Ozone to create a vivid and inventive re-imagining of Mozart’s 9th Piano Concerto for piano and Jazz Big Band. It promises to be a unique and memorable experience where the freedom of jazz is wedded to classical discipline. The result will be an enthralling addition to the jazz repertoire. Tommy Smith’s stunning arrangement of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue also offers the ideal complement to Ozone’s Mozart, matching two iconic compositions in an intriguing programme full of life-affirming wit and artistic verve. Makoto Ozone is no stranger to some of the most prestigious concert platforms in the world, having shared the stage with, among others, The New York Philharmonic Orchestra

and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He is recognized worldwide as a classical and jazz pianist of equal accomplishment, and has made more than 34 recordings, many of them with his own jazz trio. He is noted too for his collaborations with, among many others, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Ellis Marsalis and the SNJO itself on their 2011 album Celebration. The SNJO have begun 2014 with ambitious ideas, innovative programmes and bravura performances and earned standing ovations during recent shows featuring Kurt Elling in Syntopicon, and Revisiting Coltrane with Courtney Pine. More than that, audiences have been a bit shaken and more than a little stirred by the full measure of commitment from an impressive repertoire orchestra. Audiences in Scotland will be the first to appreciate the SNJO’s vibrantly, fresh approach to Mozart’s 9th Piano Concerto and to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, two universally popular classical pieces. They can also look forward to an evening of sheer, unashamed enjoyment in the company of Makoto Ozone and Scotland’s National Jazz Orchestra. There will also be a free pre-concert talk at 6.45pm. www.snjo.co.uk http://twitter.com/snjo2

Creative Scotland has launched a plan and funding plan that aims to unlock the potential and support the ambition of the arts, screen and creative industries, saying these developments represent continued progress in the delivery of Creative Scotland’s promise for change. Janet Archer, Creative Scotland’s Chief Executive, said: “Today marks an important moment for the arts, screen and creative industries in Scotland. I’m particularly pleased that the plan has effectively been ‘crowd sourced’ bringing together more than 1000 voices from across the arts, screen and creative industries. Coupled with the launch of our Regular Funding Programme, which will deliver stable, three year funding for organisations, today is the beginning of a new phase for Creative Scotland."

Information Sessions: Creative Scotland will be holding a series of nine Information Sessions across Scotland in Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stornoway, Birnam, Dundee, Lerwick, Aberdeen and Peebles. These sessions will enable anyone working in, or interested in the arts, screen and creative industries in Scotland to attend, hear about the ten-year plan and discuss how Creative Scotland can collectively fulfil its ambition. The sessions will also enable people to find out more about the new funding approach and, specifically, the Regular funding Programme.

Unlocking Potential, Embracing Ambition: a shared plan for the arts, screen and creative industries, 2014-2024 is available in both full and summary versions (aimage opposite) @ www.creativescotland.com/what-we-do/the-10-year-plan

MNS notes that some information sessions are already full - if these are, quote, "for anyone interested" then perhaps bigger venues are required?

Scottish troubadour Dave Arcari teams up with his Boston USA-based pals Erin Harpe and Jim Countryman – the Erin Harpe Delta Blues Duo – to play a double-header show at Buchanan Memorial Hall, Milton of Buchanan, by Drymen. Arcari met Erin & Jim during his debut US tour last year when they played a show together in Providence, Rhode Island. Arcari – who returns to the USA in July – has just finished a 15-date UK tour promoting his latest album Whisky in my Blood. He is particularly excited about Whisky in my Blood: “The label (Blue North, Finland) put the album out on heavy coloured vinyl as well as CD and digital download,” says Arcari. “And although this is my fifth album, the vinyl release makes it feel like my first ‘proper’ record!” Arcari is currently working on material for his next album scheduled for release later in 2014 on French label, Dixiefrog which released his 2012 album Nobody’s Fool. Arcari has shared the stage with major artists including country/Americana legend Steve Earle, the mighty Alabama 3, Seasick Steve, Toby Keith and veteran blues-rocker Robin Trower. A regular at UK and European festivals, Arcari cites recent highlights as Glastonbury; Moulin Blues Festival in Holland; Belgium’s Peer Festival (alongside Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Winwood); BluesAlive in the Czech Republic and Poland. Headline shows in the USA and mainland Europe as well as across the UK continue to take Arcari and his music to a wider audience beyond the confines of any specific genre. www.facebook.com/davearcarimusic

The irrepressible, Dan Stuart – formerly of seminal Alt-Country rockers Green on Red during the 1980s – makes irregular forays into the music spotlight these days. But what an impact he makes when he does! His first solo record this century, “The Deliverance of Marlowe Billings” was released in 2012 to a round of top reviews. Then he toured, and included a memorable show at King Tut’s, which the respected americana-uk website reviewed as “80 minutes of unabashed fervour, intensity and commitment in every single song.” Dan’s just brought out a double CD, Arizona 1993-95 that includes his first solo record, “Can O’ Worms.” His songs have been performed by artists as varied as Manic Street Preachers, Richmond Fontaine, Jon Dee Graham and Vivian Girls, which Mr Stuart himself describes as: “strange bedfellows for sure.” Sinner/songwriter/expatriate Kathleen Haskard is a 4th generation native Californian based in London and spends her down time in a tipi in a canyon on the Pacific coast in the Santa Monica Mountains above Ventura County Line. She is a culturally aware musician who passionately believes in the healing power of music, people power and that the personal is most definitely political. 56n are Graeme Hawley (of Oldham) and Derek Martin (of Dundee), living in Edinburgh for over 18 years, and together for 15. Sleevenotes is their first album. Paul Anderson, from the heart of rural Aberdeenshire, is one of Scotland’s most respected traditional musicians.Land of the Standing Stones is really a love letter to Paul’s native Aberdeenshire as all but a couple of the 51 tunes on the album are inspired by the people, landscape and history of the North-East of Scotland. The new single from Irish folk singer Heidi Talbot’s latest album ‘Angels Without Wings’, is a beautiful modern day folk song. Co written and sung with King Creosote, AKA Kenny Anderson, ‘Button Up’ was created after the pair discovered a mutual admiration: “He was asked to pick his fantasy band for The Independent and he picked me and Morten Harket from A-ha on joint lead vocals,” Heidi laughs. She conceived the melody for Button Up with Anderson in mind, and he sent back his own lyrics. The result is a brooding urgent love song. Lose this Feeling Album / ep / single? : cd / download Release Date: Out Now "The Voice" Season 3 runner-up Terry McDermott and his band the Bonfires have returned with another stunning, sweeping Britrock ballad, co-written with Todd Burman of Australia's Juke Kartel. (Todd also worked on Terry's first post-"Voice" single, "Pictures," which went to number one on the iTunes rock chart.) And judging by the new video for the track, Terry hasn't lost the feeling at all, perfectly suits the dreamy song...and yes, it does rock. CEILIDHCATU NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name. STEPHEN LEE 4 Orchestral Pieces Album : cd Release Date: Out Now 4 Orchestral Pieces is a body of work composed by Stephen Lee. Influences reflected in it include the rich, dark imagery of the art of Douglas Gordon and of Caravaggio, the melancholic vision and 'eternal solitude' of the poetry of James Thomson/Charles Baudelaire and the range and poignancy of the musicianship of Billy MacKenzie.
