know how. Some people are born to make music, some are born to judge, and I was not going to be judged by someone who couldn’t even remember my name”

I asked Faye about her life before mu-sic, and she stopped for a moment, and chose this moment to offer me a drink. Something told me this was a touchy subject. But, eventually, she continued “It hasn’t been easy. I’ve lost a lot, but I would do it all again in an instant.”

She told me that her Grandfather was one of the most important and influ-ental people in her life, “he just knew me, and knew that I was who I was” she went on “when my parents were trying to control me or tell me who to be, he would always be there, tell-ing me to go for it” Faye went on to say “whenever I write music, I think of him, and if he’d like the track. He knew a thomping beat when he heard one”

Faye seems to be focused on making her late grandfather proud, and it was admirable. She didn’t have that rude, ‘too good for you’ attitude, she want-ed to make music the old fashion way and make her grandfather proud. “I just knew I would make it. I just didn’t know how” Faye explained how she had been working as a waitress, doing pub nights and trying to make a liv-ing, while also trying to hold down a relationship which took a turn for the

I entered the deeply lit hotel suite; it didn’t look very rock n roll. It looks very clean. Everything was folded and the flowers looked fresh. Maybe Faye’s management had made an effort for me? Then,

she walked in dressed casually, in jeans and a t-shirt and offered me a place to sit down. So far I wasn’t see-ing anything rock n roll like, where was the terrible attitude, the drinking and hangover. I sat down and began to explain the shoot we were going to have later with Faye.

She loved the ideas we had, and even gave some of her own, which you don’t get a lot with artists. She had stylistic ideas. It reminded me of a young Da-vid Bowie in the way she knew what she wanted from the shoot, she knew what kind of styles she wanted, and she knew the way she wanted to look. Artists like this don’t come along all the time, they really don’t.

Faye was a breath of fresh air for the music industry, which is, full of plas-tic. She pushed away the barriers and wasn’t going to change for anyone. “I once got called into the office of Def Jam (the label Faye was with) and was told they couldn’t release my mu-sic video because they needed more time to ‘remove the ugly bits from it’ “that’s when I knew I was in the wrong place, they didn’t get me, they didn’t get my look. So I quit”

You don’t really hear of a lot of artists rebelling against their labels, more the opposite way around, what made you think, I can make it on my own? “Well, I wasn’t going to change, I always knew I would make it – I just didn’t

worse. “he just didn’t believe in me. I knew it” Faye told me about one night where she just gave up “look, I said to him. I know you don’t believe in this, in me, so you don’t believe in us and from that moment onwards I knew I was on my own” Faye took her suitcase and left for London. She knew how expensive it would be, but she want-ed to be in the middle of things, and started busking in places like Covent Garden, just her and a guitar. Some-thing she is very talented at, which I got to find out later in our shoot when Faye played one of her new tracks to us ‘Goodbye Hunny’. She wouldn’t tell us who it was about, but we think we can work out who it focuses on.

The song has that awesome guitar sound throughout. The song is raw, it sounds like a fresh demo, and that’s what makes Faye so different. She likes rough around the edges, she likes the way that the music just falls into place without being perfected, and it whats her fans love about her too. I asked her about her growing fanbase. “I just don’t get it, I mean I got giv-en security recentely to go out, I was like, what is this for?” “I think they forget I literally slept on the streets for months on a end.” Faye went on to say that her fans are the ones she writes for now. “They know me better than anyone else can, and I suppose I just don’t want to let them down. They are the reason I made it, so I owe them”

Faye spends a lot of time trying to enagage with her fans. She has a growing fan base and with thousands of followers on Twitter, Faye says that her fans are her real friends. “Without my fans my music means nothing, and why would I bother releasing music?” In a new age of music, artists some-

times get exploited by their la-bels to promote other products on Twitter. Celebs such as Paris Hilton have previously tweeted out links to other websites which sell make up or food products knowing that their fanbase will latch on and click the link.

However, Faye doesn’t seem to like this idea at all. “I think you have to be truely honest when you’ve been put into the limelight. You need to allow your fans to trust you, so you can trust them” Faye told me how her fans send her gifts sometimes, and she always tries to reply. I asked her how she would continue to do this even if her fan-base got dramatically bigger, to which is replied “I don’t care?”. Faye seems adement she will stay in contact with her fans whatever the pressures are.
