Evaluating My Music Magazine.

Page 2: Music Magazine Evaluation

I think my magazine front cover fits withthe conventions of music magazines.

I think the photograph stands out and the style fits with the people I am appealing to, as it’s alternative, and unconventional.

I think the colour scheme fits with the style and appears throughout the cover, so it’s continuous.

The cover is quite minimal which is not common on magazines, but I think if there was too much on the cover it would take away from the effect of the picture.

I think the logo creates a good brand image and works with the style of the text on the cover.

The editorial fits with the style of magazine and follows conventions, however I do think it might have taken up too much space.

The background of the contents page is intentionally plain, as it allows the focus to be on the pictures and text. Some colour could have been added subtly, however I think the background is made interesting by the picture in the corner.

I think the photographs are appropriate for their purpose in the music magazine and show a variety of people featured in the magazine and the article titles seem quite realistic.

The logo in the corner works effectively I feel as it shows continuity and adds to the brand identity.

Some of the reviews from my target audience suggested that the background colour for this double page spread was inappropriate, so this could have been changed. I do think, however that the colour in the double page spreads adds variety to the magazine.I think the articles in

the double page spread worked well and would appeal to my target readership, and the tone is right, but it has been suggested that the colour of the typography is not right, and I think this could have been improved.

Does the magazine suit the target readership?

I think my magazine does suit its target readership. I aimed to appeal to people in their mid-teens with an interest in ‘alternative’ music and style. They are most likely female, however I do think some parts of the magazine will appeal to males as well. The photographs in the magazine

and the models in them have the style of my target audience, wearing darker clothes and the items stereotypically worn by the ‘emo’ social group. I think the tone of the magazine suits

younger people as it is quite informal and the sections aren’t too long or potentially tedious. The content could also appeal as it is of a younger theme and not explicit or hard to understand. The

colours of the magazine appeal as well, with the double page spread being very colourful, the contents being eye-catching with the scheme and the contents page being quite neutral, it will

appeal to everyone.

How the audience was attracted/addressed.

I think the audience will be attracted by the style of the magazine. It is quite unique in it’s genre, and the people I’m trying to attract do not really have specialist magazines for them and their likes. The magazine ‘Kerrang!’ could be seen to cater for them, but I feel it’s too adult for the

mid-teen people I’m trying to attract, so I think the more age specific style will be more attractive. Also, many of the current music magazines are mainly for males, so the female music

fans would be attracted to it.I think the pictures are eye catching and engaging, as many of the models are looking straight at the camera, creating eye contact and drawing the reader in. The colours used in the magazine

aren’t too bright or too plain, and I hope they reach the medium where it is acceptable for most people.

Where would the magazine be distributed?

I think the magazine would be quite widely distributed to major magazine suppliers, but I don’t think it would be mainstream enough to be distributed in most newsagents or minor shops.

What has been learnt through the process of making the magazine?

I have learnt that good editing is vital in the production of a quality product. I hope my editing is at a decent standard, and I believe I have improved in my basic editing skills, and have enhanced my ability. I learnt that editing the eyes well will definitely improve the final outcome of a photograph as well, as eyes are integral to photographs and drawing the audiences attention.

Improvements since the preliminary task

I think my work has improved greatly since the preliminary task. I think my photography skills have really improved, and the editing style is better, as well as the importance of layout. I think I have been more daring with my final piece, as I have tried to be more minimal, which is hard to achieve properly, and I hope this look is effective and that the risk was worthwhile.
