Masthead, clearly recognisable from a far, and always at the top of the magazine in the same place.

Main image, posed shot, looking at the camera/ addressing the viewer. Popular well known model on the front – a wider audience, Adele’s fan base will draw more people in.

Model doesn’t cover the masthead – could mean magazine doesn’t feel very recognisable.

Cover story, White writing – bold, stands out. Attracts not only up to date music fans but Adele fans to the cover.‘Blows us away’ – persuasive language to entice the reader. Barcode – is normally put at the bottom -

somewhere that doesn’t interfere with a cover story, its needed for the shop worker to scan the product, the barcode is generally on the front and not the back because there is usually an advert covering the back page , and the advertisers wouldn’t want a barcode covering it.

Flash box – letting the reader know that the magazine must be popular as its on the 300th issue. – persuasive device.Cover lines stand out in red and black on a white background - this is on the left third – attracting readers who are not fans of Adele, to buy the magazine.Layout is fairly plain, not too busy, easy to read, except the left third is more crowded – filled with information as its the part that people see when the magazine is on the rack.

Masthead used in the corner of contents page – could be a way of keeping its identity .

Main image –popular band who feature in a main story in the magazine.

Lots of text, however its split up and organised under the page numbers – which clearly stand out in red so they’re not hard to miss.

A smaller photo used at the bottom to break up all of the text.

Section of the magazine dedicated to Oasis – this targets a specific audience and draws in their fans.

Contents heading stands out on a black background.

Section of the magazine where they have regular features - shows that they’re a long standing magazine.

This text is in a light blue box, stands out slightly from the rest of the righting – perhaps to show its written in a different style.

Shows date and issue number, so you know your picking up the right issue and can keep up to date.

Layout isn’t too cramped, but the page is very textual.

Page 3: Music magazine analysis

Drop cap used to show where article starts.

Whole page used as a picture, clearly shows its importance, and the shot is posed – purposely taken for the use of a magazine article. Photo is a long shot, so her clothing must be important – perhaps to show her different style and fashion ideas.

‘Florence & the Machine’ headline stands out on the white background.

The page layouts are fairly simple and standard, one side is very textual but easy to read and not too much, and the other is a full page photo of the artist that they are reviewing.

By using the phrase ‘new albums’ the magazine is letting you know it keeps up to date with its readers.

Mini articles down the side, in a separate box and under a different heading to show they are separate from the main story.Small photos used to break up text.

Box in the middle picks out a certain sentence or phrase used in the article, as its a review, it is probably an opinion about the music – advertising and promoting Florence & the Machine’s new album.

A smaller version of the masthead in the corner of page.

Warm colours

Page 4: Music magazine analysis

Masthead clearly stands out, looks like it has been smashed around, this could be by the sound of rock music because it is so loud and heavy.

The word ‘security’ suggests danger or criminal, which compliments the colours of her t-shirt black and yellow (suggests danger) and the colours of the magazine.

Main graphic – posed shot, looking at the camera and viewer. Popular artist – main member of the band Paramore.

Skyline advertises competition – persuasive technique – showing what the magazine has to offer.

Flash box showing off more of the contents they have in the magazine.

Barcode out the way, but clearly visible.Screamer - bold and

jumps out at you, editors want you to see it, and read what its promoting.

Cover photos - poster special draws you in as ‘special’ makes you think there’s something extra and that its exclusive to this magazine.

Cover lines on the left third – a range of different music acts draws in a wider range than just one would.

Targeted at fans of the Rock music genre, the cover is kept simple and with black, white and yellow – ‘cooler’ colours and not specific to one gender.

Contents keeps the same base colours as the cover. This means the magazine can be identified by the layout and colours .

Heading is clear, bold and stands out on the white page.

Extra bit at the top – not set out like the rest of the contents page so you know its separate. The text is styled different and there is more of it.

Logo of the magazine is not needed on the contents page.

Clear subheadings in bright yellow on black background, separate from the page numbers and articles.

Main image on the page – recognised and popular music artist – has one of the main stories in the magazine.

Smaller images break up the text and give incite into what other stories are in the magazine. They have captions to show which pages each article is on.

Subheadings separate different sections of the magazine.

Smaller images are all the same size and set out around the main image – keeps the layout neat and easy to follow.

Rock artists are sometimes thought to go ‘off the rails’ and ‘wild’ - relevant story to a rock magazine.

Taylor Momsen is a new artist – shows that the magazine keeps up to date .

Popular, brings a younger generation to the magazine.

Black background – style of rock.

Photo is full page, clearly a posed shot looking at the audience.

Model is wearing rock styled clothes – black leather, a choker, and black dark eye make up.

Red writing makes the questions asked in the interview separate from answers, so they stand out clearly.

Drop cap signifies where the article starts.

Introduction talking about Taylor Momsen and who she is, before going to the interview.

Simple layout not too packed, and the writing is broken up so it makes it easier to read. The whole double page spread is dedicated to the article, instead of having little flash boxes or mini articles down the side of the page.
