Benefits of Volunteering Abroad Murray and Pearl Rosenberg Memorial Fund Established by Pearl Rosenberg, psychologist and former assistant dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School, in honor of her husband Murray Rosenberg, physician and professor of genetics and cell biology from 1963 - 93 and an advocate for human rights. Assists students who conduct research or provide humanitarian service in socially or economically depressed parts of the world or the United States. Provides travel assistance for undergraduate biological sciences students at the University of Minnesota. “I found that I can learn so much better by doing things rather than reading about them or being taught in a classroom.” “I will never be the same again and I am more open to learning new languages and exploring the world once again.” “One goal that emerged while in Peru was that I have a yearning to do more to bring a positive change in the world.” “While researching medical schools, I have made international volunteer opportunities a must.” “I want to make practicing medicine in underserved areas a focus of my life.” “I learned a doctor needs to be conscientious of a patient’s culture and background to ensure the patient truly understands questions, a diagnosis, and how to take any medications.” “I learned how to deal with unexpected situations, relate to people of another culture, and how to be a respectful volunteer who does not try to impose culture and beliefs on the people where the service is occurring.” “I want to spread awareness of the benefits of international volunteering (that it is not simply a tourist excursion) and to encourage others to participate in an international service project or work for positive, respectful change in countries abroad.” Travel Assistance Awards are given for travel expenses only – air, bus, train, car, etc. Awards range from $250-$850 Funds are awarded after the completion of the project or experience (reimbursed to students after they return) Students have traveled to Costa Rica, Ecuador, Kenya, Panama, Peru, and Tanzania, among other places “I think in any future international healthcare work that I would do, I would always remember to hold onto this attitude – not of pity, but of admiration for ingenuity and persistence.” “I realized I could spread awareness of the issues people face worldwide and create change in that manner. Established by Pearl Rosenberg, psychologist and former assistant dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School, in honor of her

It can be challenging for some students to incorporate traditional study abroad opportunities into their CBS curriculum.

International service supports the exploration of academic and career goals, especially for students interested in pursuing health

professions.

We want our students to graduate and become citizens who are concerned about their global community.
