Dear Incoming 6th Grade Families,

Welcome to sixth grade and the middle school! Research has shown that continued practice with mathematics skills over the summer months leads to greater retention when students return in the fall. The mathematics department at Murdock Middle School has put a summer mathematics program in place so that you can best be prepared to enter your new mathematics course in the fall.

Students entering grade 6 are expected to complete this packet of mathematics activities over the summer in order to retain those skills learned in 5th grade and to be adequately prepared for 6th grade. All problems in this packet should be solved without the use of a calculator. Students are asked to show their work when solving the problems in this packet. The process is as important as the answer. Some helpful hints are provided below to help students in the completion of this assignment.

Make a timeline for completing the packet.

Break the packet down into sections and complete one part at a time – don’t leave it all for the end of the summer.

Set a regular time and place to work that is free from distractions.

In the fall, mathematics teachers will review student’s progress and will earn an assessment grade reflective of the effort that students have put into the summer work.

Math packets will be due to student’s math teacher by September 11, 2015. Students who complete this packet to the best of their ability and pass them in on time will be invited to a summer math celebration to be held in the fall.

Helpful Tips

When adding or subtracting whole numbers or decimals, line up the place values.

When adding or subtracting fractions, get a common denominator.

When multiplying or dividing mixed numbers, put them into improper fractions first.

When dividing fractions, do not forget to change the sign to multiplication and make the second

fraction its reciprocal.

Factors are numbers that can be evenly divided into a number…the factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3 and 6.

Multiples are the product of a number and any other number…some multiples of 5 are 0, 5, 10, etc.

To change a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.

To change a decimal to a fraction, put the number over the place value of the last digit and reduce.

To change a fraction or decimal into a percent, multiply by 100.

To change a percent into a fraction or decimal, divide by 100.
