Vision StatementMurdo Area will be a growing, productive and

unified community with diverse organizations.

Murdo Area will be a progressive, adaptive, and positive Community that makes complete use of the resources that are immediately available.

Murdo Area will be a place where young people come back to live and where people want to relocate. There will be available and affordable quality housing.

Vision Statement (Cont.)It will be receptive to new businesses and

complement existing businesses.

The school will continue to increase in student numbers, and the students will be well-educated with the opportunity to advance.

Murdo Area will be a central hub that utilizes Interstate 90, Highway 83 and the railroad, with import and export of goods and services.

Mission Statement

The Horizons Community Strategic Planning Team makes a commitment to stay active in the life of the Murdo Area through the implementation of the plan. We will do this by encouraging our residents to utilize their skills and talents to enhance our community and promote change and development.

Murdo Area Goals1. Work towards increasing the quality of housing

available in Murdo.

2. Expand the job market and improve the

economic development environment.

3. Implement and maintain a volunteer program.

4. Develop Recreational areas for the community.

5. Implement a “Welcome U to Murdo” Program.

Housing GoalA. By 2013, there will be 10 newly constructed

homes.B. Appoint a housing committee by January, 2008

that will:i. Meet with SD Housing Development

Authority by February, 2008ii. Meet with Economic Development

Committee by February, 2008iii. Identify available lots—to purchase or

through donation by April, 2008iv. Identify people who are willing to build or

bring in newly constructed homes—continuously throughout program

Enhance Jobs/Business & Econ Development Goal

A. Create a paid position to promote economic development in and around our community within one year.

i. Chamber of Commerce will coordinate. Board of Directors to arrange financing and select candidates will be formed within 6 months.

B. Develop a mentoring program within two years.i. Economic Developer hired in A above will spearhead

development of program and recruitment of experienced community members to serve as mentors helping people develop marketable skills.

C. Utilize the industrial park within 5 to 10 years.

D. Develop & support existing business i. Develop a “Buy at home” program – May, 2008

above – February, 2008

A. Recreation/Community/Youth Centeri. Promote use of public facilities (pool, gym, etc.) by

February, 2008ii. Increase access to such facilities by February, 2008.iii. Investigate need/funding for a separate facility

(Library/Center).
