PIETERMARITZBURGI suppose it’s a good thing that I was one of the fi rst people to receive an invitati on to a law fi rm’s golf day scheduled for the 12th of May... I quickly sent an email to suggest that he reconsider the date, as it’s Mother’s Day! Can you just imagine the tantrums in the house if Dad went off to play golf on Mother’s Day?

So instead of Dad playing golf, what can the kids do to make Mom feel special?• Make mom breakfast, lunch or dinner, and set and clear the table.• Don’t fi ght with your siblings.• Do all of your homework and chores without having to be reminded.• You could make a key ring with a special message that she can carry everywhere. • A nicely thought out hamper of good-ies – add her favourite DVDs, CDs and treats...• A cookery class is a hugely enjoyable gift . And if you go along too it’s a great way to bond with your Mom!• An appointment with a colour expert will help your Mom discover what colours suit her skin tone and what sort of outf its she should wear.• Treat your Mom to an aft ernoon tea or for a personal touch (and to save a bit of money) you can create your own aft er-noon tea – you just need a cake stand and tea pot set, with some tea, litt le sand-wiches and mini cake treats.• Give your Mom the gift of some ‘me’ ti me with a spa day or get a pamper set for her to enjoy at home, or a scented candle.• Moms tend not to spend a lot of mon-ey on themselves, so treat yours to a gift voucher so she hasn’t got any choice but to!• Or you could give a voucher that doesn’t hold a monetary value but off ers your ti me instead. Whatever you do to spoil your Mom, be grateful that you sti ll have her around to spoil, many of us aren’t as lucky. Alice xxx

Everyday LifeCorner Post

If you want to have Fish and Chips on a Monday night for R30 including a free drink, then Corner Post is the place to be – and you had bett er book as it has be-come that popular. If you miss Monday night, Tuesday is the Burger special night and this is good too at only R20 plus a free drink. Service is quick, food is hot and de-licious. The choice: a standard burger or, for a few more bucks, 180g patt y, avoca-do and bacon on a rusti c home-made bun. Chips are an extra but worth every penny with the yummy garlic mayonnaise made on-site. Many patrons (including myself) have suggested that they bott le and sell the mayonnaise; chips just do not seem the same without it. Sunday evenings are prawn nights – 500g prawns for R50, either peri-peri or garlic butt er. All other goodies ordered are extra – but what a fantasti c way to fi nish the weekend.

The latest owner of Corner Post, Jose, hails from Portugal also having lived in London for a while, where he met his South Afri-can wife, Tori. In a short ti me he has made his mark in Howick’s litt le village. Att en-ti on to detail, and a fl air for making the customer welcome, as well as a menu to tempt your taste buds, has made Corner Post the place to be seen. Corner Post is child friendly with an outside play area, jungle gym and a trampoline. Because I live in Hilton (with its numerous power outages), Corner Post is now on my speed dial; an impromptu family get to-gether during the week is sorted.

Liv.52Fussy Eaters

Getting used to meal times, new foods, strange textures and flavours can be troubling for a child. Spending time preparing food which is left uneaten can also be stressful.

• Dietary intake: Relax. Recent American research suggests that even the pickiest of young eaters are very likely to meet or exceed their recommended energy and dietary intake for their age. So focus instead on giving them a healthy nutritional en-vironment. • Food shopping with kids: Let your child choose an item to buy from the supermarket – so long as it’s something they’ve never tried before. • Cooking with kids: Make meal preparation a time for fun and working together. Let your little one add ingredients to dishes, sprinkle herbs or stir in the milk. Give your child a board and a plastic grater for some cheese or ask them to chop a courgette with a butter knife. If you can cope with the initial spillages, letting them get the family drinks will help develop their co-ordination. Younger children will love washing up, tearing up salad or getting messy with some floury dough. • Food and kids: Research suggests that the chance of a toddler accepting a new food only increases after we’ve offered it to them more than eight times. Make “taking a bite of everything on my plate” or “sitting at the table until I’m finished” categories in your child’s reward scheme and remember positive attention and praise are the best rewards.

If you’re cooking for a picky eater, try not to spend more than 10 minutes preparing it, that way if it goes into the bin, you’ll feel less frustrated. Take advice on nutritional supplements if you’re concerned.

They have started TV fi lm drama acti ng classes for kids – some-thing completely diff erent to commonly known drama classes. Go Big is also a cast-ing agency and can enable opportuniti es for most kids. They have cast for Mr Price, Cartoon Network, TV commercials, series and fi lm roles for kids as well as adults. The course teaches kids confi dence, how to deal with bullying, TV presenti ng skills, encourages creati vity, movement, and acti ng for TV and fi lm. It involves many fun theatre games as well as a year-end Drama Festi val, open to all surrounding schools. Children will also be taught by Maeshni Naicker from the movies Florida Road and Broken Promises during the year. Most will get an experience of being on a fi lm set. The Importance of Pre-School Educati on

Whether you call pre-school Grade 0 or Grade R, the important issue is: the ear-lier a child gets to a recognised pre-school environment, the bett er!

Grade RRR which is the three to four year old group at Hilton Pre-primary could be the most important year at the school. This is when beginning knowledge is de-veloped. It’s like being given a blank can-vas. As a result you can see how impor-tant it is to make the RIGHT decision as to who is going to be given the opportunity to make their mark on that pristi ne can-vas. Hopefully, parents are aware that the pre-school years are the few in which the greatest and most signifi cant brain growth and development take place in a human being’s life. From seven years old unti l the day they die, their brain development will not be as much as those fi rst six years of life.

As a parent you have a right to ask ques-ti ons of the school your child will att end. Are staff members trained with a four year qualifi cati on, registered with the South African Council of Educators? Is the equipment audited on an annual basis and is there a diversity of equipment encour-aging physical development? Do teachers get conti nuous training and are they ex-posed to the latest informati on in educa-ti on? Is your pre-school an NPO where all monies are spent on the children’s needs or is it a business which is run for profi t? Does the school believe in relati onships? Does it belong to eco–schools and support sustainable environmental educati on?

Please use your right as a parent to ques-ti on and don’t sett le! Only the best will do for these beauti ful litt le works of art!
