Dear Friends,

With the launch of our Little Artists Preschool, the Trayle Press Studio, expanded outreach efforts by the Shakespeare Liberation Army, and record student participation… well, it’s been an exciting year.

But wait, there’s more! Summer at MAC always brings wonderful ways to get creative. While discovering all the new classes we’ve developed for you, be sure to check out Community Events on page 36, too.

Finally, please read about the incredible renovation planned for the gallery. I hope you’ll seriously consider supporting this major effort after learning more on page 39.

Sincerely,

Family clay night

Fridays • 6 to 8:30 pmJune 21 to August 23No pre-registration

Come as a family and play with clay! $20 a session per adult & child pair.

$10 a session for each additional family member. Pay at MAC office.

Includes glazes, firings & 5 lbs of clay. Not for solo participants.

This is an adult and child activity. Use of the potter’s wheel by

instructor approval only.

These classes are designed for parents, guardians and their children as a way to interact and participate together.

These classes offer a process-oriented art experience. While providing instruction in the use of art materials and techniques, our teachers guide students through the creative process in an effort to elicit and encourage each child’s individual style of

visual expression. Rather than simply following directions to construct prescribed art “products,” children in our classes learn to trust their own creative impulses while

being supported by their parent or guardian. We recommend both adult and child wear grubbies as these classes can be messy. All materials are included. Clean-up is part of

visual arts classes. Once classes are full, we cannot accept extra students.

It had been startling and disappointing to me to find out

that story books had been written by people, that books were not natural wonders, coming up of themselves like grass. Yet regardless of where

they come from, I cannot remember a time when I was not in love with them—with the books themselves,

cover and binding and the paper they were printed on, with their smell and

their weight and with their possession in my arms, captured and carried off to myself. Still illiterate, I was ready for them, committed to all the reading I could give them.

City Budget Updateby Jennifer Yocom, Community Relations Manager,Portland Parks & Recreation

As you may know, the City of Portland is facing a $25 million deficit for fiscal year 2013-14. Several factors have impacted this deficit including the Multnomah County Library District, the recent Department of Justice settlement, and budget notes from the FY 2012-13 Adopted Budget. With that, the Mayor and City Council have asked all City bureaus, including Parks, to develop a budget based on 90% of their current budget (the Current Appropriation Level). That means Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) faces up to a 10% cut in programs and services.

While we don’t know what PP&R’s final budget will be at this point, it is possible that certain programs will be changed, reduced or eliminated, or fees will increase to help cover costs.

Follow the process at www.portlandoregon.gov/parks/budget, and find out more about community budget forums where you can testify at www.portlandoregon.gov/cbo. The City’s final budget should be adopted in June and implemented on July 1, 2013, the first day of the new fiscal year.

The work of PP&R—its parks, natural areas, community centers, and programming—daily and directly affect the lives of Portland residents. Follow what’s happening and consider attending and testifying at public meetings about the issues important to you.

Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to participate in programs offered citywide.

How it Works1. Choose the activity you would like to

participate in, and then the PP&R site where the activity is being offered.

2. Register for the activity. You can do this in person at a PP&R site, or on-line at www.PortlandParks.org. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity (online, check the box.)

3. Once registered, please contact Inclusion Services at 503-823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member. At the end of the phone intake, it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.

Important DetailsA general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids and services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed, and can be flexible and creative. Participants need to register for activities that are intended for their birth age. Personal care is provided for activities in the pre-school and youth category, up through age 12.

If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.
