Saints Triumphant Sunday
November 15 & 18, 2018
WELCOME TO ST. JOHN’S
We’re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end
of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with
us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Kuske. He would love to meet you
and to serve you in whatever way he can.
OUR FACILITIES
Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother’s Room
and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John’s believe that families should
be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be “taught” to
young children.) If your young one needs some “time out,” we have an A/V-equipped
Mother’s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during
the service, please feel free to ask an usher.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
As we approach the end of all things and the great Day of Judgment, we want to make
sure we have it all straight; the readings for this Sunday help us prepare by their careful
description of what is to come, so that we will not fear as we look and long for the day
of his appearing. Rather, clinging to his grace in Word and sacraments we strive to live
as though who know what to expect at the end of it all.
PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP
Lord Jesus, our Judge and King, you will come again with great power and glory to
gather your people to your side. Until you return give us the strength to trust your
Word which will not pass away and lead us to live in service to Christ in his
purpose. In the name of our Savior and Lord we pray. Amen.
Please Note Sunday service is video-recorded and will be aired on our local cable channel at noon today. If
you would like a copy, please speak to pastor after the service.

THE RINGING OF THE BELLS and WELCOME TO GOD’S HOUSE
HYMN Jerusalem the Golden
Christian Worship, 728 1. Jerusalem the golden, With milk and honey blest—
The sight of it refreshes The weary and oppressed:
I know not, oh, I know not What joys await us there,
What radiancy of glory, What bliss beyond compare:
To sing the hymn unending With all the martyr throng,
Amidst the halls of Zion Resounding full with song.
2. Oh, sweet and blessed country, The home of God’s elect!
Oh, sweet and blessed country That eager hearts expect,
Where they who with their leader Have conquered in the fight
Forever and forever Are clad in robes of white.
Jesus in mercy bring us To that dear land of rest
Where sings the host of heaven Your glorious name to bless.
3. The Christ is ever with them; The daylight is serene.
The pastures of the blessed Are ever rich and green.
There is the throne of David; And there from care released,
The shout of them that triumph, The song of them that feast.
To God enthroned in glory The Church’s voices blend,
The Lamb forever blessed, The Light that knows no end.
This twelfth century hymn, first conceived by Bernard of Cluny, depicts an idyllic, heavenly scene.
The hymn is gloriously set to the English folk tune THAXTED.

CONFESSION OF SINS

God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us
forgiveness.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have
disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil
and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now
and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior
Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
LORD, HAVE MERCY (Kyrie)
ABSOLUTION
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to
be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore as a called servant of Christ and by
his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son
(+) and of the Holy Spirit.

THE WORD
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 118
Christian Worship, page 108
The LORD is my strength and my song;*
he has become my salvation.
The LORD’S right hand is lifted high;*
the LORD’S right hand has done mighty things!
I will not die but live,*
and will proclaim what the LORD has done.
Refrain
I will give you thanks, for you answered me;*
you have become my salvation.
The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;*
the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
9
This is the day the LORD has made;*
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND LESSON 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to
grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose
again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in
him. 15 According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who
are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen
asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command,
with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ
will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together
with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so, we will be with the Lord
forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.
VERSE OF THE DAY (Revelation 7:15a)
M: Alleluia. They are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his
temple. Alleluia.

GOSPEL Mark 13:24-27
After the announcement of the gospel, the congregation sings:
C: Glory be to you, O Lord!
24 “But in those days, following that distress,
“‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ 26 “At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and
glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the
ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.
After the Gospel, the congregation sings:
C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and
glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY Like the Golden Sun Ascending
Christian Worship, 147
1. Like the golden sun ascending, Breaking through the gloom of night,
On the earth its glory spending So that darkness takes to flight,
Thus my Jesus from the grave And death’s dismal, dreadful cave
Rose triumphant Easter morning At the early purple dawning.
2. Thanks to you, O Christ victorious! Thanks to you, O Lord of life!
Death has now no power o’er us, You have conquered in the strife.
Thanks because you did arise And have opened paradise!
None can fully sing the glory Of the resurrection story.
3. You have died for my transgression; All my sins on you were laid.
You have won for me salvation; On the cross my debt was paid.
From the grave I shall arise And shall meet you in the skies.
Death itself is transitory; I shall lift my head in glory.
4. Grant me grace, O blessed Savior, And your Holy Spirit send
That my life and my behavior May be pleasing to the end,
That I may not fall again Into death’s grim pit and pain,
Whence by grace you have retrieved me And from which you have relieved
me.
5. For the joy your advent gave me, For your gospel’s great reward,
For your baptism which has saved me, For your supper and your Word,
For your death, the bitter scorn, For your resurrection morn:
Lord, I thank you and extol you, And in heav’n I shall behold you.

SERMON Daniel 12:1-3
Shine Like the Heavens! You can shine because God has sent Michael.
You do shine because he has written your name in the book. You will shine because of the Resurrection.
“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There
will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations
until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in
the book—will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will
awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those
who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many
to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be
done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as
we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.

THE SACRAMENT
PREFACE
M: The Lord be With You.
C: And also with you.
M: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them up unto the Lord.
M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.
C: It is good and right so to do.
M: It is truly good right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give
you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus
Christ, our Lord, who preserves his church to the end of time when he will come
again as king to judge all people and take his own to glory. Therefore, with all the
saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their
glorious song:
15
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Sanctus)
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread. When he had
given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this
is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it,
all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you
for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of
me.”
16
PAX DOMINI
M: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

HYMN Blessed Are the Saints of God
Christian Worship, 394
1. Blessed are the saints of God; They are bought with Christ’s own blood.
They are ransomed from the grave; Life eternal they shall have.
With them numbered may we be Here and in eternity.
2. They are justified by grace; They enjoy the Savior’s peace.
All their sins are washed away; They shall stand in God’s great day.
With them numbered may we be Here and in eternity.
3. They are lights upon the earth, Children of a heav’nly birth.
One with God, with Jesus one, Glory is in them begun.
With them numbered may we be Here and in eternity.
Text: Joseph Humphreys, b. 1720, alt.
HYMN I Know of a Sleep in Jesus’ Name
Christian Worship, 211
1. I know of a sleep in Jesus’ name, A rest from all toil and sorrow;
Earth folds in her arms my weary frame And shelters it till the morrow.
My soul is at home with God in heav’n; My sorrows are past and over.
2. I know of a morning, bright and fair When tidings of joy shall wake us,
When songs from on high shall fill the air And God to his glory take us,
When Jesus shall bid us rise from sleep—How joyous that hour of waking!
3. God’s Son to our graves then makes his way; His voice hear all tribes and
nations;
The trumpet of God will sound the day And shake all the earth’s foundations.
He calls out aloud, “O dead, come forth!” In glory we rise to meet him.
4. O Jesus, draw near my dying bed And take me into your keeping
And say when my spirit hence is fled, “This child is not dead, but sleeping.”
And leave me not, Savior, till I rise To praise you in life eternal.
Text: Magnus B. Landstad, 1802–80, abr.; tr. The Lutheran Hymnary, Decorah, 1913, alt.

HYMN Lord, When Your Glory I Shall See
Christian Worship, 219
Lord, when your glory I shall see
And taste your kingdom’s pleasure,
Your blood my royal robe shall be,
My joy beyond all measure!
When I appear before your throne,
Your righteousness shall be my crown;
With these I need not hide me.
And there, in garments richly wrought,
As your own bride I shall be brought
To stand in joy beside you.

Sunday Morning Bible Class: We explore chapters 11 and 12 in Hebrews, how Jesus
defines the heart of our faith.
Thursday Morning Adult Bible Study: We will investigate the book of Judges. There
is a pattern to spirituality which God makes clear in Judges. We encounter this pattern
in our time and culture as well. How can we stop the negatives of that pattern today?
This week, we will be looking at Jephthah and Samson.
Principal Called: Please remember Mr. Benjamin Schramm and his family in your
prayers. Mr. Schramm was called at the congregational meeting last Sunday to be our
principal for the next school year.
Ladies Aid Shut-in Baskets: Ladies Aid is collecting for and delivering Shut-in Baskets
Monday, November 19th. They are looking for donations. These baskets will go to men

serving dinner noon- 12:30 at St. Joseph’s cafeteria. It is an opportunity to have a great
meal, and to socialize with others in our community.
There is no need to be alone for Thanksgiving. If you would like to come, you will
need a reservation, so please call the store at 608-356-4649, by Monday, November
19th. If you live in the city of Baraboo and have no ride, we can provide transportation
for you. Please join us.
Holiday Ushers: We need ushers for the holiday services (Thanksgiving, Christmas
Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve)! If you are interested in ushering for a service
or two, please sign up on the sheets on the Narthex table.
22

the fellowship hall on Friday, December 7th at 8 am.
Do you want to help others? Are you a Thrivent member? Have you used your two
Action Team Grants for the year? That is $500 a year to help your school, church, or
community! You have until December 31 to apply. Not sure how to apply or use
them? Please contact Cindy Allen at 920-344-0455 or another TAC member (Eugene
Phelps, Marilyn Forbush, Steph Wilkinson, Shirley Steinhorst, Kathy Voss, John and
Barb Earl) for help.
Upcoming possible projects include: Christmas goody bags for children, Valentines
for Veterans, Valentines for active duty servicemen, Care packages for active duty

Military Christmas Care Packages: The ladies of the St. John’s Mary Martha Circle,
have stepped forward to offer their assistance for our active military personnel that are
members of our area WELS churches. We are in the process of putting together a list of
active duty military personnel from St. John’s-Baraboo, St. Paul’s-North Freedom, and
St. John’s-Rock Springs congregations.
If you know of WELS active military personnel let us know—we will need their
military mailing address. The Mary Martha Circle has agreed to use a portion of their
Fruit Cake sales for this project. Their plan is to put together Care Packages with items
recommended by the U.S. Military Commands. They also plan to work with our school
to have the children create cards and letters to be included in the packages. Nela Stacy
