Multimedia University of Kenya RIDING THE PATH OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Following inspection and a good report by the Commission for University Education, His Excellency the President and Commander-In- Chief of Kenya’s Defence Forces Hon. Mwai Kibaki granted a university charter to Multimedia University of Kenya on 1st March 2013 in a colorful and momentous ceremony at KICC. The President also appointed Mrs. Catherine Kimura as the first Chancellor of Multimedia University of Kenya. Prof. Walter Oyawa, the outgoing Principal of the former University College was also appointed Ag. Vice Chancellor of the University by the Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Hon. The University Charter comes at a time when MMU is celebrating the ranking by CPS International as the best public university in Kenya in ICT excellence (usage and facilities), the 2 nd best overall in Kenya, and 5 th best overall in East Africa. Reports from the Centre for Public and Social Research Ranked the best Public University in Kenya in ICT Excellence (CPS) International confirm that while MMU is the top public university in Kenya in the use of ICT in education and operations, it is the second University in Kenya, and fifth in the whole of East Africa. The ranking of the Universities was done based on ICT Policy, Infrastructural facilities, Faculty’s use and access, Students’ use and access to ICT tools and the use of ICT in the Finance Department. MMU Selected to host “Sap Skills for Africa” Training Program Multimedia University was selected to host an Information and Computing Technology (ICT) training programme that equips university graduates with latest skills necessary for the job market. This comes after the government of Kenya through the Kenya ICT Board and SAP announced a partnership deal that will see 100 bright but underprivileged students undergo training to become certified SAP Software engineers. Dubbed “SAP Skills for Africa”, Kenya ICT Board CEO Paul Kukubo said the partnership is key in equipping young professionals with high end ICT skills that are on demand in the Kenya and the wider East African market. This hands-on initiative perfectly fits into MMU’s agenda of producing graduates who are immediately ready to be productive in the industry upon graduation. Mechatronic Engineering, have come up with an innovative clean cook stove. The cook stove is a smoke-free stove that not only conserves the environment but also boosts food production. The stove, made out of locally available material has two ventilations and takes four minutes to boil two litres of water. The primary aeration lets in air that helps the twigs to burn, producing heat that is used for cooking. The other one allows in air that mixes with smoke, causing combustion, hence limiting smoke and turning the twigs into charcoal. The charcoal, Mr Masinde says, is what could be used in the farm for food production as it contains high levels of nitrogen, which is good for plants. This ongoing research project is foreseen to play a central role in forest conservation since the stove uses twigs often regarded as waste, sparing trees from being used as firewood or charcoal. Following inspection and a good report by the Commission for University Education, His Excellency the President and Commander-In-Chief of Kenya’s Defence Forces Hon. The granting of university charter to MMU is the culmination and grand finale of a long journey that commenced soon after the elevation of the former college KCCT into the former University College in 2008. The University Charter comes at a time when MMU is celebrating the ranking by CPS International as the best public university in Kenya in ICT excellence (usage and facilities), the 2nd best overall in Kenya, and 5th best overall in East Africa.

development and training and laptop support. Following the signing of the Memorandum of understanding, MMU was selected among four other institutes in Kenya to benefit from a one year student apprenticeship at Samsung Engineering Academy in Westlands, Nairobi. The apprenticeship will see top students employed by Samsung upon graduation. MMU students have also had an opportunity to jointly host a road show with the Samsung team of experts.

MMU signed an MOU with China CCTV media group, enabling MMU students to get internship positions at CCTV station. MMU has also signed MOUs with Kenya Wildlife Service, Postal Corporation of Kenya and Kenya Film Commission. Further, MMU is partnering with Safaricom Ltd to digitize the Kenyan high school curriculum and avail the information to schools, using the Safaricom Blackboard platform.

MMU shines at East African varsity games in Dar es Salaam

MMU’s sports teams showcased an impressive performance in the just concluded East Africa University games that were held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, by bagging the second best trophy in Badminton and clinching the third spot in Hockey.Sheila Gakii, MMU’s prolific Badminton player had her star shining bright after she manage to outshine big teams like Kampala International 2-1, Kyambogo 2-0, Laikipia University 2-0 and Kenya Methodist 2.0 to proceed to semi finals in the Badminton individual takes. In the semis, she was again pitted against Kampala International University but carrying on with her rich form of vein, she nailed Kampala 2-0 to book her ticket to finals.

Hockey team did not disappoint either! In a tight competition that saw only Kenyans teams taking part since it is the only country that registered, the Trojans, as they are known, managed to clinch the third spot after playing with JKUAT, Moi, KU, and Kimathi.

MMU Alumni elected to top UPU (UN Agency) position

Multimedia University of Kenya has once again been cast into the map of landmark achievement when Kenya’s Amb. Bishar Hussein, a former student of MMU and the first Postmaster General of Postal Corporation of Kenya was elected Director General of Universal Postal Union (UPU) for 2013-2016 in Doha, Qatar on 10th October 2012. This news came during the 25th Universal Postal Congress (UPU) where member countries selected him over other international candidates. UPU is a UN agency whose Headquarters is based in Berne, Switzerland. Soon after this achievement,

Amb. Bishar visited Multimedia University and encouraged both staff and students to strive towards achieving excellence in the core business of the University.

Other Alumni of MMU who have taken key positions in the country include Mr. Francis Wangusi, the Director General of Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) who was a lecturer at MMU and Dr. Enock Kinara, the Director General of Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) who was a student at MMU.

MMU’s Special FacilitiesMMU Radio

MMU has a 24 hour vibrant community radio with the frequency 99.9 FM. It broadcasts five kilometers around the university, therefore covering the nearby towns of Rongai and Karen

among others.

State-of-the-Art Film and Animation Laboratory

MMU prides itself in offering the first and only degree programme in Film Production and Animation in the country. It has some of the best-equipped media and communication labs,

including more than 22 high-end I-Mac computers and many Multimedia PCs for use by our students in the duration of their studies.

The Bachelor of Film and Animation programme is a four-year degree programme that covers technical and creative components of filmmaking including concept development, screen writing, camera operation, production management, and directing, editing and sound design.

Students create their own projects to develop skills as directors, producers and editors with the aim to become proficient filmmakers. They also gain expertise in digital film production, (film) business management, marketing, and communications for the film related industries.
