PASTOR’S COLUMN The movie Life Is Beautiful takes place in the 1930's and tells the story of an Italian Jew who, along with his wife and young son, is imprisoned in a concentration camp. In an attempt to keep his son from realizing the horror of their circumstances, he chooses to portray a positive attitude, actually making a game out of the various situations that occur. His playful ways don't change the reality of their condition but do make it possible for them to ride the surface of its inhumaneness. The story illustrates an attitude of playfulness that's possible even if what we're doing is difficult. Summer is a natural time to think about play and playfulness. It seems to me that the ability to be playful is too often a casualty of the aging process. Many of us have lost this art that came so easily in childhood. We know it's important for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being to have a little fun now and then, but we're serious and logical people, responsible grown-ups. When we do try to play--as I have with my extended family in volleyball games on the Fourth of July--we often do it so competitively and with an intensity that begets tenseness. It's fun only if we win. Isn't it possible, as singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffet says, to "grow old but not up," to stay playful and young at heart even as our physical hearts weaken? Spiritual growth presents a particular challenge for playfulness. It's so easy to be overly serious about it. Who can fault someone intent on becoming more holy, more prayerful, more constantly in touch with God? And yet, unless those goals are held lightly--with a certain playfulness--they'll never be realized. The Buddhist tradition knows the wisdom of this approach, which is related in the story about a student who asked the master, "How long will it take me to reach enlightenment?" "Five years," was the reply. "Well, what if I try harder?" the student responded. "Ten years," replied the master." It's strange. In every other area of our lives we learn that we must put forth effort to attain our goals. But spiritual growth is different. Yes, there's discipline involved, and steps to be taken, but for the most part we have to learn to stay out of God's way. A spiritual director and retreat leader named Tom Stella puts it like this: "Spiritual growth is about transformation…. [It's] not about altering our ways, but being open to the playful, creative ways of the Spirit that brings us to new places in our lives almost without our knowing it. Transformation requires that we relax in our skin and accept the fact that being who we are is enough. It requires the willingness to loosen our grip and to let God lead. Seriousness is a barrier to this process, but a playful spirit enables it." Consider the fact, as odd as it sounds, that we could be at our playful-spiritual best when we're engaged in our hobbies, those things we do just for fun or for the love of it. Isn't that when we're least bothered by the self-consciousness that interferes with our ability to be playful? What if we could see all of life and live all of life like a hobby, without the burden of self-consciousness, our hearts lost in what we're doing and therefore more vulnerable to being taken by the Mystery that lies hidden in our day-to-day endeavors? What if? God's Peace, Pastor Brad

APPORTIONMENT DISCUSSION On Sunday, August 25 after worship, the representatives of the Ad Council and Finance Committee will lead a discussion regarding our option to pay all or some of our apportionments to the Wisconsin Conference, Jurisdictional Conference and General Conference as a way to protest the General Conference's vote of exclusion of the LGBTQ community. MUMC has always taken great pride in full payment of our annual apportionment, but as a Reconciling Church we feel strongly a protest must be sent to the General Conference. One way to effectively do that is to withhold all or a portion of our payments. We invite you to participate in this discussion and provide your prayerful recommendation and/or agreement with our Ad Council's recommendation as we represent our Congregation.

AUGUST MISSION OFFERING The River Food Pantry

The River Food Pantry is Dane County’s busiest food pantry, offering free groceries, meals, mobile lunches and clothing to anyone who comes for help. Located in a warehouse just off Northport Drive and Packers Avenue, The River is surrounded by low-income neighborhoods and subsidized senior housing—exactly where we’re needed the most. We also provide a mobile lunch program for children and teens in low income neighborhoods surrounding the food pantry. Nutritious packed lunches are distributed in the neighborhoods on weekends and other non-school days. More than just meals, The River provides a warm and welcoming family atmosphere where everyone is treated with respect, encouraged to find the support they need, and given the opportunity to share what they can with others. The River serves over 1,000 Dane County families per week, sharing over 50 thousand pounds of food every seven days, or about 2.7 million pounds of food each year. Over $1 million worth of clothing, furniture and household items are distributed annually. We also serve nearly 800 hot meals each week and currently distribute over 400 mobile packed lunches on each non-school day. In 2018, The River received 30,025 family visits. Approximately 34% of those served by The River are children and 9% are seniors. In 2018, The River provided 81,904 packed lunches to children and teens with MUNCH, The River’s mobile lunch program. Thank you for your generous support of this mission.

CARING COORDINATOR COLUMN Our 4th of July community outreach gathering was great fun! The parking lot was filled to the brim, our grassy north-facing hill was covered with blankets, and excited families and kids! Hundreds of passersby enjoyed popsicles, popcorn, water, and lemonade. Free-will donations brought in $789! Volunteers from Monona UMC along with four other Seeds of Peace (SOP) churches enjoyed fellowship and meaningful community interactions all while promoting our school partnerships and backpack meal programs. The children, families, and staff of Henry Schenk, Frank Allis & Nuestro Mundo elementary schools greatly appreciate the community support. Thank you Monona UMC for your continued support of these vital relationships and programs! The 3rd annual “Tunes on the Triangle” is set for Thursday, August 29, from 5 – 9:30 pm. Mark your calendars for this SOP fundraising event! The city street between Lakeview Moravian Community Church and Henry Schenk Elementary will be closed to traffic and filled with food carts and back to school activities. The grassy triangle church property will feature live music, kid’s activities, pie by the slice sales, and the popular Pie Auction! Sales and free-will donations benefit the school nutrition programs! Pie bakers, setup & teardown volunteers, and event workers needed. Please contact me if you can help. Caring & Coordinating, Mark Buffat

STEPHEN MINISTRY Walking out of the doctor’s office, we were both devastated. That was not the news we hoped for. Surgery was going to be necessary. That in itself was not what we expected. But even though she was very gentle and caring, Dr. Smith said the prognosis was not good. Our heads were swimming!

“Let’s call the pastor to talk about this.” Those were the first words my husband said, as we got into the car. We did. It was good to share our news with someone. Just speaking it out loud seemed to be good. Sharing it with someone else seemed to lift the burden a little. The days went on. We thought and prayed. We talked with our children. We talked with each other. Still, it was stressful. My husband said he wanted to talk to the pastor again. He made an appointment and had a helpful conversation with the pastor. And when he came home, he told me that upon the advice of our pastor, he was going to have a Stephen Minister to visit with once a week. They would be one-on-one conversations. Confidentiality was assured. The Stephen Minister would not be someone to tell him what to think or do. Rather he would listen, support and encourage. He could help my husband think through this new reality. We knew that even as it had been helpful to talk to our pastor, so it would also be a comforting relief to share regularly with his Stephen Minister. There was now one more caring person to share our burden. In our congregation, similar care is available. Pastor Brad, Mark Buffat or Frank Gaylord would be happy to arrange for a Stephen Minister for you or someone you know who would benefit from such care.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD’S CREATION …MUMC IS NOW GREENER THAN EVER…

As of the month of July, MUMC has been enrolled in the MG&E GREEN POWER TOMORROW program.

It all began with the generous gift of LED bulbs that now light up a good part of our building. With a sizeable cut in electricity use, our Church & Society group started to explore what going green would cost us. Not so much, it turned out, just around $35- per month. If we could recruit enough families to give a few dollars extra each month to their pledge, the Ad Council gave its approval. And so, we did. Thank you to all who now are participating. With regard to the Green Power Tomorrow program, the more participation, the more wind and solar energy MGE can purchase, and the less coal it will have to procure. Through the Green Power Tomorrow program customers can choose to participate 100% or at a lower percentage level. One hundred percent participation costs one additional cent per KWH usage, amounting to $6 to $7 increase per average household per month. For more information check out this web site: https://www.mge.com/environment/green-power/gpt Imagine if everybody would choose to buy electricity from renewable energy sources. It could make a lot of difference in the green-house gas we emit. Church & Society, Siv Goulding

A STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE The Impact of Our Giving

Be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For … those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing. (James 1: 22-23; 25) Much of what we read about stewardship is exhortation to give to the church and to missions. It often answers how and what without answering why. What is the impact of our giving on the mission of the church? Often, the church describes how it uses our gifts like this. In the table, we see that across all our Wisconsin United Methodist churches a third of our giving pays for clergy, 19% for other staff, 27% for building and utilities, and so on.

Clergy Staff Bldg Apport Prog Mission Loans Annual Conf 33% 19% 27% 9% 4% 4% 4% Main St UMC 50% 9% 22% 14% 1% 4% 0%

Bldg=Building Costs; Apport=Apportionment Costs; Prog=Program Costs A second line shows these same costs for “Main St” UMC. Clergy costs are a higher percent of budget, while staff, programs, and loans are less. The table below, in contrast, shows MSUMC’s costs by areas of ministry. Worship receives the greater proportion of gifts given to the church, while missions is second and spiritual formation is third.
