Multicultural News Dear Readers
Welcome to the December 2018 Multicultural Newsletter,
I was lucky enough to attend Metropolis 2018 Conference. A culturally rewarding
opportunity, a gathering that brings together leaders and experts from across the globe
to discuss migration, diversity and integration. This event was hosted by a consortium
led by Settlement Services International (SSI) in partnership with Australian
Multicultural Foundation (AMF) and Multicultural NSW (MNSW).
There are many factors that contribute to successful regional settlement, for the
Central West and Beyond communities. Experiencing the benefits of successful regional settlement requires
leadership to encourage support, advocate and bond within the local community. There are tangible benefits to
both the host and settler communities, employers, families and individuals, gaining understanding and satisfying
cross cultural curiosity.
Overall, the experience at Metropolis 2018 suggests to me there will
be growth in migrants settling in regional Australia driving the spread
of multiculturism and diversity across this great land.
World renowned expert on migration research, Professor Ian Goldin from Oxford University, revealed fresh evidence of the impact of migration for growth of economies, fiscal costs and benefits at the International Metropolis Conference, in Sydney this week. Professor Goldin’s research, conducted in conjunction with Citi, found that across
the globe migrants are:
• 2 to 3 times more likely to start businesses
• 2 to 4 times more likely to start ‘unicorn’ businesses
• 2 to 3 times more likely to win Nobel Prizes
• 2 to 4 times more likely to lodge patents
