MHM structured a capital equipment and manufacturing systems investment intentions survey, viewing 100 of the major Electronics Manufacturing sites in Europe.

Focus Is On Growth Scope

… Eastern Europe & Communications For Example

The Multiclient focused attention on growth regions, such as Eastern Europe and Russia, and growth sectors such as Communications although all regions and market sectors were covered. Specific types of capital investment analysed included:

MHM’s enquiries centred on intended capital investment, for systems and equipment in the next 6 and 12+ months, alongwith installed capacity. MHM’s study viewed systems and equipment purchases at OEM, EMS and ODM facilities.

Methodology

Methodology included MHM’s methodology included a comprehensive desk research, followed by a relatively large survey.

Research entailed identifying the top 100 OEM, EMS and ODM Electronics Manufacturing sites across Europe (see Appendix 3.1) and researching appropriate contact names and other information required for the survey. The research therefore entailed identifying top players per market sector, structuring a market sector overview alongwith a contact database of participants, for use in targeted marketing by the client.

Then A Survey of 50+ of the Top 100 Sites

The survey, which had the top 100 sites as its target, interviewed around 50 sites with a 20-30 question questionnaire identifying opportunity for MHM’s clients at these locations.

As the pie chart reveals Agilent and Viscom have similar shares – nearly three times the share of the nearest contender, Orbotech.

While Cyberoptics and VI register a share of 9% the collection of six smaller players represent around 15% when combined.

OVERVIEW’

Overall intended purchases, comparing OEM and EMS, were remarkably similar. In total, out of a sample of 54 manufacturing sites interviewed, around 63% were planning at some stage to buy AOI equipment – this ratio dropped to 35% of companies interviewed, counting only purchasing during the next 12 months.

Viewing the ‘installed equipment’ category the post-reflow/wave category is, at 50%, not too distant from the ‘intended purchases’ results above. The larger ‘installed equipment’ category sample shows 38% for post placement and 12% for post paste locations.

Cumulatively the buying intentions, within 12 months, represents 64% of total buying intentions – put another way 36% of potential customers intend buying, but in a time period greater than one year.

In a realistic buying time frame - of less than 6 months – the figure is 21%.


AOI Installed Equipment – ‘In-Line Versus Off-Line

From a sample of some 153 AOI machines installed the

results were that ‘in-line’ represented 76% and ‘off-line’ 24%.

Lead-Free Soldering

As the overview figure relates lead-free soldering is more

than two thirds advanced across Europe – in around a third of cases there was either no requirement for lead-free soldering or the site had not made the changes.

PCBA Traceability

68% of companies interviewed claimed PCBA Traceability was required – this was least evident in Eastern Europe where the incidence was around 56%.

Process Improvement Initiation

As may have been expected 100% of companies claim to be initiating process improvements.

BGA Components

Again around two thirds of companies interviewed are placing BGA components, a lower proportion in Eastern Europe was found.


0201 Components

Slightly less than half of the companies interviewed

claimed to have 0201 capability – although a significant number of those who did have the capability said it was under-utilised, or not used at all at present.

MHM conducted a comparative analysis, between equipment types, to gauge whether any types of equipment were more popular than others.

Overview of Assembly Equipment

MHM has constructed an analysis of the estimated number of future purchases within the 100 target sites. By pro-rating up the figures, from those interviewed. ‘AOI’ equipment appears well ahead – with purchasing intentions at approaching 60% of the 100 manufacturing sites.

‘Pick and Place’ equipment, with purchasing intentions at 44%, came second.

At 39%, just a few percentage points behind ‘Pick and Place’, ‘Soldering/Oven’ equipment came third.

1 in 3 and Screen or Stencil Printing equipment 1 in 5 locations.

Motion Control Automation equipment, Robotics mainly, was required in around 1 in 6 and the more specialised Bonding equipment around 1 in 8 sites.

MHM’s analysis reveals of 19 manufacturing sites buying AOI equipment from a total of 31 manufacturing sites interviewed, in Eastern Europe and Russia. When installed capacity is viewed it can be seen that: Average number of AOI machines per location – is

Process Improvement Initiations – 100%, same as

for ‘All Europe’ BGA Components – around 18% less than for whole

of Europe 0201 Components – around 38% more than Europe

Hence there is evidence that the leading edge 0201 technology is more likely to reside in Western Europe, but for the other factors processing conditions are similar between West and East.
