MULBERRY STREET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH May 19, 2019 www.mulberrymethodist.org Mulberry’s Safety Team Being a downtown historic church comes with many unique opportunities. From a historic fire to serving Macon’s homeless population, Mulberry had a need for a group of people to help keep the membership safe in a variety situations. We have put together a team of nurses, law enforcement, and lay leaders for just that purpose. The team decided to take a proactive instead of reactive approach to the safety of our congregation. This team has been trained on CPR, come up with evacuation plans, and worked with staff to keep the facility as safe possible. Before we formed the committee, our custodial staff had been providing safety for our congregation without any organization or help. They are our first line of defense and are used to dealing with our downtown homeless population. We utilize their expertise and give them help and support as much as possible. Some of our memebers recognized that there was a greater need than what the staff could provide, so we have recently decided to be more proactive and purposeful about safety. Several different layers of safety have been put in place since the inception of the committee. We have off duty law enforcement in place during times when large numbers of our membership are at the church. The team has put a specific emphasis on keeping our children safe in the nursery. We also have nurses that are members who are available for any medical needs. Communication devices are utilized among staff and committee members to help with any situations that may arise and to ensure that we are able to help at any moment. With a large downtown campus and a historic facility, we have tried our best to prepare for any situation that may arise. We also know that it is a learning experience and we have to be open to change and updating what we prepare for. It has been a group effort and we are so appreciative of the staff and the membership and the help they give us. Katie Griffis Safety Team Chair

Celebrate the Day of Pentecost (June 9)!
Please plan to wear red on June 9, the Day of Pentecost. We’ll celebrate the Holy Spirit’s descending on the disciples 10 days after the ascension of Christ and fifty days after his resurrection. The color red reminds us, “They saw what seemed to be individual flames of fire alighting on each one of them” (Acts 2:3). Please plan to worship at Mulberry Street UMC (or another church if you’re traveling) on June 9.
