Quinenes wins Voice of
Democracy essay contestLillian Quinenes, left, is the winner of VFW Posts 8216 Voice of Democ-
racy contest. Commander John Bechtol, right, presented her a $100 award
at the post meeting of December 5. Her presentation was forwarded to thedistrict competition with other winners from across southern Wisconsin.
Each year, more than 51,000 high school students from around the countryenter to win a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships and in-
centives awarded through this audio-essay competition. Knowing that a dem-ocratic society needs nurturing, the VFW established the Voice of Democracy
program (VOD) in 1947 to provide students grades 9-12 the opportunity toexpress themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles.
The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directlyto the recipients American university, college or vocational/technical school.
Other national scholarships range from $1,000 to $16,000 and the first-placewinner from each state wins an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.
