Summary of the ReportWe visited MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad). This research gave us the opportunity to gain a detailed knowledge of the various types of Human Resource practices being carried out in MTM (Masood Textile Mills). During our visit to Masood Textile Mills we were able to study the practical aspects of Human Resource Management, which till now we had only studied in books. We visited MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad). We were informed about the various types of benefits offered to the employees to maintain a healthy working environment. The employees of MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) are even provided various health and safety benefits. In this report u will come across the various aspects of Human Resource Management in detail related to MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) by reading which you will be able to assess that Human Resource Management.

HISTORYThis tradition of leadership and great ingenuity is continuing with Ch. Muhammad Nazir who steered MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited) towards the next century of growth and prosperity. Throughout its history, MTM's progress has been through dedication, dynamism, hard work and most of all conviction and today this continues to be the code by which the 7,500 workers lives by. The founding member Ch. Muhammad Nazir (a kind hearted man, but with strength and honor) had considerable land holdings and influence in the region. The direct result was the establishment of MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited), set up in 1986. It is not only providing the benefits to the people of the region, but also exporting the raw material to Champion, Chaps, Calvin Klien, Dockers, GAP, Hanes, Polo R. L., Russell, Speedo, Tommy Hillfiger, Tom Tailor and Vantage, generating a lot of revenue for the country. And after the death of Ch. Muhammad Nazir, MTM (Masood Textile Mills) is still on the road of progress under the supervision of his son Shahid Nazir (CEO), Yasir Nazir (Executive Director) and Ch. Zafar Ali (GM). After setting up in 1986 MTM (Masood Textile Mills) have installed new technology and equipment to meet the needs of modern era. Now in MTM (Masood Textile Mills) the machinery is imported from Germany and Japan. After 15 years of MTM's establishment, in 2001 the system of MTM was totally computerized. MTM is now on its way to prosperity.

Masood Textile Mills Ltd. Overview:Masood operates throughout the World with over 7,500 employees as part of our team. Masoods Collection has a wide selection of quality garments including T-shirt, Polo shirt, Jogging suit, Henley shirt, Raglan shirt, Tank top, Shorts, Pants and Sleepwear. Competent professional staff, a team of talented merchandisers, excellent supplies & support services, and state-of-the-art technology is the driving force behind Masoods phenomenal growth in the past years. Masood has expanded its operations to include the Internet, and has taken advantage of the variety of international trade facilitated by the Web. Now Masood uses state-of-the-art client/server technology for its market information processes to coordinate its network of global buyers and agents around the world.

DIVISIONS:Masood is a truly Vertically Integrated Textile Unit. It has in-house Yarn, Knitting, and Fabric Dyeing, processing, Apparel Manufacturing and Laundry facilities. The Company has five SBU's and a highly qualified experienced mills manager heads each unit. All Mills Managers in turn report to the General Manager. The objective to operate in this manner is that there is a close co-ordination and link between all the divisions. Every unit operates in the most efficient manner in-order to achieve competitive prices, timely delivery and quality products.

Masood has invested in growing and ginning of cotton. The company would ask the growers to sow the most suitable cotton variety for knitted products. With the help of ginning process, we procure the raw cotton for the whole year. This helps us to provide the consistent quality products for our customers through out the year. If the customers want to lock the prices for a certain period, Masood can offer this service as we reserve the cotton for the particular program. MIXING

Maximum number of lots is mixed to get uniform results and avoid Barre (patta). Raw cotton is procured from best cotton growing areas. Sandwich mixing technique is used for stocking, which is a conventional method. Its contamination picking system is unique one contamination system. It is designed and made by Masood's Engineers. It claims the lowest level of contamination in yarn of Pakistani cotton. BLOW ROOM

We have a single line Toyoda OHara Hergeth Blow Room in operation. All produced Laps made are weighed and those found beyond quality controls limits at this stage are discarded. Removal of waste at subsequent beaters improves cotton cleanliness. CARDING

Carding section has 24 carding machines of Cross Roll MK-4. Best quality wire is used for cylinder, doffer, taker-in and flats. Additional stationary flats are installed to reduce IPI Level. We have a very good cleaning and suction system. Filter room is also of Cross Roll. Our technical expertise and equipment allows reducing higher percentage of fly and dropping to get good results. DRAWING

Combined machinery setup of TOYODA and latest model of RIETER is at function in our premises. In addition to photocells, in-house designed and fabricated Electric Silver stop motion on Toyoda Drawings is installed. Color silver picking system on Breaker Drawings is introduced. A special team of color- silver picker work round the clock. Reiter SB-2 and RSBD30C are installed with auto leveler. Barco silver watch system is used for color contamination. Wrapping is checked round the clock. RING

Thirty RY-4 TOYODA Ring Frames work round the clock at ring section. SKF PK-225 drafting system is attached on these Ring frames. LUWA Air conditioning systems in Ring department maintain the required R.H and temperature in the whole ring

department to maintain low hairiness in yarn. Cots, Apron and Steel rings of machinery is changed at proper time. PACKING

Our packing department consists of Xorella machinery. With the help of Xorella, we get superlative conditioning of yarn in very short period of time. Enhanced conditioning of yarn increases the strength of yarn and therefore, decreases the breakage of yarn during the knitting process. This result in a product which is not only conditioned exceptionally but additionally it helps to decrease the wastage as well.

To produce knitted fabric of supreme quality, it is impetrative that superior quality raw material is procured at competitive prices. At Masood finest quality yarn in the market is produced for our in house knitting. FLEECE MACHINES

We have dedicated a complete unit of machines for fleece fabrics with additional capability to produce heavy single jersey fabric as well. A variety of fabric such as plain, cross, suede, textured fleece can be produced at our versatile facility. We have "Vanguard supreme" Machines to knit body size fleece fabric and "Mayer & cie" machines for open width fleece fabric. The vast variety of available Dia Gauges has enabled us to produce all the widths thus reducing our costs in cutting. SINGLE JERSY MACHINE

Single knit fabric is knitted on four track machines. These machines can produce fabric such as single jersey, P.Q, mesh, drop needle jersey, bird eye jersey etc. Masood also has Lycra attachment equipment for best fabric stretch recovery. A large number of " Mayer & CIE " and "Vanguard" knitting machines are currently in production at Masood. Available Dia Gauges given as follows: Dia: 16'' 18'' 20'' 22'' 24'' 30'' Gauges: 20e-24e-18e INTERLOCK MACHINES

Drop needle and feeder stripe fabric are mostly produced on our inter lock machines which have the capability to produce rib fabrics in addition to Interlock fabrics. Available Dia Gages given as follows: Dia: 30 Gauges: 20e - 24e

FLAT KNITTING MACHINE

Considering the importance of fabric accessories such as Collars, Cuffs, Waist band, Trims, we have invested in a vast number of Matsuya flat knitting machines that are producing the trims for all our major replenishment programs. FABRIC INSPECTION

Our knitting units are producing fabrics of excellent quality with minimum defects. Additionally, an online 100 percent fabric inspection system is in function to meet the international quality parameters as required by most of our customers. 4points quality system introduced by J.C PENNY (USA) is also being followed at our knitting facility. The Fabric Processing Division of Masood Textiles has a capacity of dyeing 41,450 kgs per day. It is equipped with Thies, T.S.I, SCHOLL, and Gaston dyeing machines. It is capable of dyeing both 100% cotton and blended fabric. The machine size selection gives

the flexibility in dyeing a lot size ranging from 100 kgs to 1,000 kgs. The department has two Santex finishing lines from Switzerland, which include hydro extractors, dryers and compactors. In order to maintain the quality of processed fabric, Masood has the testing laboratory with latest equipment to check the fabric. It ensures that the fabric quality is maintained and is according to the required parameters of our customers. DYEING

Our in-house and very well equipped Dyeing department with a production capacity of around 41,450 Kg of dyeing / day allows us to fully meet our dyeing requirements. We have dyeing machines for dyeing cotton fabric and a fully computerized high temperature jet-dyeing machine to dye all kinds of synthetic fabrics including polyester. A well equipped laboratory ensures all dyed fabric is properly checked, as per buyer's requirements, for factors such as shrinkage, color fastness, etc. FINISHING

Finishing department at Masood, comprises of automatic hydro-extractors for the removal of moisture from dyed fabric, computerized tensionless dryers for instant fabric drying, soft-setting and calendaring machines for systematic soft-setting and rolling of fabric, fully computerized compaction machines for complete shrinkage control, and panel wash machines and tumble dryers for panel washing the fabric to give minimum shrinkage value. Again personal attention ensures that all the fabric leaving the finishing department is properly inspected and thoroughly checked for relevant factors before being forwarded to the next stage of production.

We believe that prevention is better than cure. The sooner the problem is tracked, the better it is in delivering the goods on time. During the process of stitching we have inline inspection and final inspection processes. The garments are 100% inspected by highly experienced inspectors. Our objective is to produce with Zero Defects. . The BACK TRACKING SYSTEM plays a vital role in developing sense of responsibility and accountability in every person in making and inspecting the garments. The same thing is emphasized in ISO-9002, so we are not only the ISO-9002 Certified holder but also the true executors. The company has independent Quality Assurance Team that conducts inline audits and final finished goods audits. The QA. Manager ensures that before the goods leave the factory, they comply to the customers AQL standard. CUTTING

5 cutting units working under the supervision of skilled unit managers, these cutting units are well equipped with latest machinery including Gerber Plotter, Spreader etc. STITCHING

With over 1,749 stitching machines, manned with the most skilled and expert operators, Masood is capable of producing about 120,000 dozens per month versatile garments ranging from basic to high fashion, mens, womens and kids with maximum flexibility in size and color assortments. The Quality control and Quality Assurance departments are in place to make sure the companys objective of zero defect. Computerized Bar coding and Back Track systems provide Masood 100% predictability and tracking performance. EMBROIDERY

Latest Tajima embroidery machines, fully automated, 6 color 40 heads provide Masood the flexibility and capability to cater to the customer requirements.

HUMAN RESOURCE IN MTMBasically human resource management is the process of acquiring training appraising and compensating employee and attending to their labor relation ,health and safety, and fairness concerns.

HR Department: While going into details, the HRD activities are categorized as follows: Recruitment and Selection. Contract of service. Training and Development. Performance Appraisal. Remuneration & Benefits. Employee Benefits. Incentives. Medical Cover. Work schedule. Employee Welfare Grievance handling. Health & Safety. Traveling Rules. Discipline

RECRUITMENT AND SELECTIONIn MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) they have a selection system that allows the organization to admit those individuals who share the philosophy of the organization, can adjust themselves to the behavior and culture of the organization, and are willing to put forward their best efforts for organizational success.

Basically it is the process of deciding what position the firm will have to fill, and how to fill them. SELECTION CRITERIA The selection is entirely base on merit, which confirms to selection criteria without any bias towards, gender, religion, race, color, nationality, age, and according to the procedures laid down in the HRD policies. The role of HR department in the recruitment and selection process is to:

Develop guidelines and procedures. Provide recruiting services and staff support Council Line Manager to make final employments decision. Provide basic training to newly hired employees.

Types of Recruitment: In MTM (Masood textile mill ltd) there are two type of recruitment Internal: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills) vacant posts are filled internally, to provide an opportunity for the workers already working in the organization. Vacant posts are displayed on the Organizations notice board.

External: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills) fresh or experienced candidates are also hired.

Recruitment Process: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) the Head of the department sends request to HRD department along with all requirement, if any, for the vacant post. HRD department invites and screen applications and then short-list the candidates according to selection criteria.

Sources of Applications: The sources of applications are as follows: Advertising and Print Media. Walk-ins. Internet.

Selection Procedure: The steps involved in the selection process are as follows: Filling out application forms. Application screening. Initial screening interviews. Tests. (Written and Practical) Interview. Final selection. Final interview.

Filling out Application Forms: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills) specific application forms are used to collect verifiable data from all level of candidates. It includes the information about education and skills, comprehension level, handwriting etc.

Application screening: After building a pool of candidates applications short-listing of selective applications is done by the HR manager according to the demand of vacant posts. Tests: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited) tests are of two types: Managerial Level: For executives, MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited) gives a specific written test according to the nature of the job. The reason for the written test is to assess that whether the recruits are able enough to fulfill the general practical requirements of the job. Labor Level: For this level supervisors are responsible for conducting the interviews fro the Workforce.

Final selection: The selection decision is based upon the marks that a candidate gets after going through complete selection process. Final decision to hire any person is taken by the Competent Authority (Interview Panel) after the interview. Final interview: This final interview is conducted for those employees who have been selected after the final selection process. The employees are sent confirmation letters and called upon by the HR Manager to assign them their specific duties according to the job requirements.

Appointment: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) each selected candidate is given a letter of appointment specifying his terms and conditions of service. The candidate has to pass the medical examination conducted by the companys doctor before he is confirmed. Induction: The appointee shall submit his joining report, in writing, to his head of department; on the date he joins his duty. The time office shall issue and Identity Card which shall indicate the Deportment, Designation and the Employee Number of the new appointee. Employee Orientation: Employee orientation provides new employees with basic background information they need to perform their job satisfactorily. New employee is introduced to his colleagues and provides information that covers things like working hours, performance reviews, vacations, employee benefits and regulations. The HR Manager performs the orientation. There is a different orientation process for every type of employee.

Training & Development:Basically the training is the process of teaching new employees the basic skills they need to perform their jobs. In MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) training is provided to every fresh employee, there are two levels of training Managerial Level: The Fresh Managers are to be trained for 6 months that includes: Training classes Practical Work Lectures from different managers Practical work in different departments

Labor Level: For this level there is a training of 20 to 30 days for every employee according to the nature of the Job. Job Rotation: In this method an employee moves from department to department to broaden his or her experience and identify his strong and weak points.

Performance Appraisals and Rewards:Performance Appraisal is a formal process or a periodic review in an organization where each employee is evaluated in order to determine how he or she is performing. The appraisal process in MTM involves: Setting work standards. Assessing the employees actual performance relative to these standards. Providing feedback to the employees

Evaluation is carried out for the following reasons: Promotions. Termination. Transfer. Pay raise.

Training and Development. Carrier planning of employees. Improving organizations performance

Method of Appraising Performance: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) the line manager appraises the employees annually through specific evaluation form. During the appraisal process the manager considers the objectives, which are given to the employees, evaluate his performance and reward him according to his work standard. During this process the appraiser also conducts an appraisal interview with the appraisee to make him satisfied that his evaluation is justified. The appraisal process consists of the followings: Appraisee Information: The first part of the evaluation form contains information such as Name, Employee Number, Department, Grade, Designation, Appraiser and performance time. Performance Plan and Evaluation: Rating key in the performance planning and evaluation form is assigned specific grade points such as: Outstanding (30) Superior (25) Competent (25) Below expectations (20) Unacceptable (0) Without numeric values the standards cannot be measured. The form further contains two boxes for key performance objectives and quantifiable measurement criteria. The employee is given a performance objective and then judged according to the measurement criteria and against these columns rating key scores are assigned. The form is signed both by the manager and the employee being appraised. Rewards: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) some rewards are also attached with performance. Employee of the Year:

The award of employee of the year is given to that employee who performs best in terms of attaining the given assignments according to the standards described by the organization. And awarded with two pay bonuses and one week vacation for managerial level employees.

Employee of the Month:

The award of employee of the month is given to that employee who performs best in terms of attaining the given assignments on monthly basis. The award given to employee of the month is that he will get three days off from his job. Rewards are also given to the employees who attain 100% attendance throughout the year. They are given a bonus of Rs. 2000 per year.

Remunerations and Benefits:Mode of Payments: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) Employee working in the office/security/transport and those performing supervisory nature of jobs on the process are paid on monthly basis. Labor force is paid on weekly basis

Salaries: Basic Pay: Basic salary is an amount, which is paid to an employee in accordance with the grade in which he/she is placed.

Transportation Allowance: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) transportation allowance is provided to the employees in case if they do not maintain any transport of their own as per rules.

Cycle/Motor Cycle/Car Allowance: All employees who maintain motorcycle/car are entitled to motorcycle/car allowance provided, when the vehicle is registered in their names and they bring the same for at least 15 days in a month to the factory.

House Rent Allowance:

House rent allowance is provided to those employees who are not living in the housing colony of MTM at 60% of the basic salary with a minimum limit specified for different grades (M1 to M6) from time to time. Utility Allowance: All employees in Grade M1 to M6 and above shall be paid utility allowance according to respective grades.

Supervisory Allowance: All the employees having the supervisory nature of job and are in Grade S1 to S4 and Junior Executive are entitled to supervisory allowance as stipulated in the grades. Till such time they continue to perform such duties.

Night Shift Allowance: All employees up to Junior Executive Grade are allowed Night Shift Allowance while performing night shift duty.

Leaves and Holidays: The following kinds of leaves are provided to employees during their work life. Sick Leave Casual Leave Annual Leave 10 days 10 days 14 days

Annual Increment: Annual increase in salaries of employees is made annually. This increase is according to the performance of the individual during the preceding period. Promotion: Promotion in company is subject always to merit and suitability of employees to the position for which he is being considered.

Employee Benefits:Insurance:

In MTM all employees have been ensured under the group team insurance policy. Under this group insurance policy, an employee is entitled to compensation in case of death and disablement, as described under the policy.

Employee Contribution Welfare Fund: The company has established a welfare fund where in all the permanent employees are eligible to become members. All the members are required to contribute a nominal amount towards the fund and the company contributes an equal amount. In case of sick leave with out pay, total permanent disablement and death, the members or his direct dependents are entitled to financial assistance.

Medical Cover:The company has a contract with Sahil Hospital and Nawaz Medicare Hospital Faisalabad. They also have a dispensary in their Mill for workers and for emergencies. Medical Allowance: The employee who does not want to avail medical facility can apply for medical allowance. Once he opts for the allowance he can only change it after the expiry of one year.

Attendance System: In MTM (Masood Textile Mills Limited, Faisalabad) attendance system is totally computerized. Every employee has a company card, the scanner scans that card and the employee is marked present. Over Time: All employees up to the Junior Executives are paid at one and a half times the rate of their basic salary.

Traveling Rules: In order to travel on companys business, an employee should obtain prior approval from his Divisional Manager/Departmental Head on the prescribed form.

The employee shall be entitled to Traveling/Hotel Expenses and Daily Allowance as indicated in the policy. Daily allowance is admissible for outstation duty of a minimum duration of 8 hours and a distance of at least 50 Km from the factory/office. In case the duration of stay is less then 8 hours but more than 4 hours, 50% of the admissible daily allowance shall be paid .The daily allowance shall cover the expenses for food, tips, and laundary.e.t.c. An employee who travels in his or her own car or on motorbike will be entitled to claim mileages as per the company rules. An employee is entitled to claim re-imbursement of taxi fare, expenses on telephone calls and telexes, which he may incur in the performance of his duties.

Discipline:Discipline is a procedure that corrects or punishes a subordinate because a rule or procedure has been violated. The purpose of the discipline is to encourage employees to behave sensibly at work. An organization performs well only if its employees performs well. No doubt, the best job security is the performance of person himself, yet the implementation of a fare, just and transparent policy has a great role to play. The aim of this policy is to evolve a system, which would make the termination of the services if the employees a just, fair and transparent process hence acceptable to all. Termination: During the probationary period, an employee service may be terminated at any time without assigning any reason for the same. The company may terminate a confirmed employee by giving notice of termination. Notice of termination shall be in writing, it shall become effective as specified therein.

Affirmative Action: If any employee were found guilty due to any reason e.g. (late coming, found lazy on job, delay in projects etc) affirmative actions would be taken. For this Head of Department of relative department will complain to the HR Manager about that particular employee then HR Department will take the following steps: Explanation letter: Explanation letter is issued to that employee, containing warnings and the employee is to explain the reason of being guilty within 24 hours to HR Department. Charge Sheet:

Charge sheet is issued to that employee if he/she fails to answer the explanation letter within 24 hours. Charge sheet contains basic charges that are committed by the employees and the employee is to appear in front of a panel of three people that comprises on HOD, GM and HR Manager. If he satisfies them, the inquiry would be closed otherwise he is FIRED. Dismissal: An employee shall be dismissed from service if found guilty of misconduct as specified under the law, such employee shall not be entitled to any notice or pay instead thereof.

Resignation: A probationer may resign form the services of the company by giving 24 hours notice in writing. A permanent employee may resign from the service of the company either by giving notice, in writing, as per the terms of his appointment or depositing salary instead thereof.

SWOT ANALYSISStrengths: MTM provide house training to freshly relatively inexperience people. And they give incentives to university graduates in house training. Selection is entirely base on merit without any bias towards gender, religion, race, color, nationality, age and according to procedures in HRD policies. Recruitment is always on entry level. There is different orientation process for every type of employees. MTM also provide job instruction training to employees that is Quality Improvement Team Youth Group. In this method various steps for solving the problems and training the employees to overcome these problems are made.

Weaknesses: In MTM there is only one type of recruitment process that is external process. MTM dont have an Updated human resource information system. MTM has less staff according to requirements. MTM has not cyberspace recruiting. The interviews conducted in MTM are mostly unstructured.

Opportunities:

MTM has always been at the forefront of new developments in textile research and have pioneered in several innovations. MTM has an institutionalized in-house training function, reflecting their commitment to building a workforce culture where all employees have access to personal and professional growth opportunities. Staff at all levels is encouraged to participate in these development programs. In-house training courses and workshops are regularly organized: some recent topics included Communication Skills, Time Management, Leadership, Language Improvement, Productivity Enhancement and Development Course for Supervisors. Adult education classes are held regularly for the workers' benefit.

Threats: Grievance handling is a major concern of the company. Unions and Labor relation laws influence how pay plans are designed. In MTM, top management cant make any policy without the acceptation of employees and labors. Labor unions always have imposed pressure on top management.

Recommendation:MTM should focus on recruitment process. They should also focus on training process. They have more focus on OFF THE JOB TRAINING. They have less focus on ON THE JOB TRAINING They should also start apprenticeship training, programmed learning, literacy training techniques, and computer based training. They should keep its own database system. When management requires data about employees, they can retrieve data immediately about employees. They should also start video conferencing and training via the internet. They should start structured interview, because in mtm mostly interview are conducted unstructured. They should have qualified and technical staff according to different departments and training method programs. Packages should also start cyberspace recruiting.
