Sri Madhava Perumal Temple in Thyaga-rajapuram will soon wear a fresh look. Reno-vation is expected to start soon., being done after the last one some 15v years ago.
In 2005, industrialist Venu Srinivasan had anchored the renovation that involved refur-bishing the sacred tank on the southern side, revival of the Nandavanam, repair works of the flooring as well as painting of the vima-nas and the Raja Gopuram.
The previous consecration had taken place in January 2007.
Once again, Venu Srinivasan’s team will undertake the repair and renovation , cover-ing the entire temple complex. Last Saturday, his painting team was at the temple to assess the current state of the temple walls and to take measurements.
Balalayam could take place in Avani once the Thiruppani Committee gives the green signal for the renovation. Following this, all the repair works and painting of the walls will commence. The consecration event is expected to take place early next year.

VINCENT’s JOTTINGSBy VINCENT D’ SOUZA
The last time I was on the Marina, I was battling rodents on its lawns. It was my little bag they were after; had they bored in they would have been challenged by my inhaler.
In the pre-Covid days, I had found a convenient nook here - outside the Vivekananda Coffee counter; some sundal or masala vada and piping hot coffee, seated at a table and surveying life across the sands, and around me. I regret not having patronised Sagar Vihar - it was demolished recently to make way for Chennai Metro. The Parikhs’ snacks must have been yummy.
The coffee though had triggered the outline for a story - a film star’s murder in the Sagar’s washroom. It comes to light 25 years after the macabre act, when workers demolish its walls . . .Shades of Auto Shankar!
If you are a Marina manic, you would have known that the beach has been the haunt of many creative souls. And for film shootings.
In my teen years, classmate Prem and I would spend many a weekend in the sand off Labour statue. Prem was trying to find his way in life and was reading many Tamil books on self-improvement; he bounced his thoughts on me and these set off long debates.
The Marina holds social history. The stories it holds . . . .But I do not like the way the
state manages it.It raises lawns every 5 years, plants foreign saplings
every 3 years, granites pathways every 3 years and now wants to set up a ropeway car service for visitors so you can sight the sands and sea from far above. The state spends crores on the Marina because the money spins many side-dishes when tenders are floated and are not disciplined and there is no accountability.
I think we must have a Marina Beach Authority. A department that manages this unique, natural state. It must have officers, staff, departments, collaborators and volunteers. Just now some PWD or GCC Johnny oversees the Marina. Time and again, he and his team present ‘beautification’ schemes. Carts for hawkers, archways for memorials, coffee-and-loo units on the service road . . . .
I have said this before. All we need here is Clean Sands. Like the Clean Metro Rail. That is the first, foremost priority. You and I can make this happen if we stop flinging the fryumms packets on the shore or burying beer bottles in the sand.
As for the rodents, I wonder if our city has a Pied Piper? Or can Magician P. James do the trick?
MY STORY
Rani Meyyammai Girls Higher Secondary School is a government-aided school started in 1961. The majority of the students are from eco-nomically weaker sections and their parents are daily-wage, domestic workers.
In the early days of the pandemic-time lock-down in 2020, online teaching faced a big block. Only about 50% of students’ parents had smart phones. The others had simple phones and they were of no use.
Many NGOs and the alumnae of our school began to support us by providing study materials. Our school management also provided good support to the school students and teachers
during lockdown. Those without smart
phones had to rely on books and watching Kalvi TV.
The pandemic also called into question the readiness of our resource systems, including push-ing teachers to have better knowledge of electronic
gadgets for virtual mode of teaching. In a way, COVID-19 became a catalyst for
digital adoption in our school’s teaching and learning process. Our middle and high school teachers prepared video lectures using their mobile phones and shared them with students via WhatsApp groups.
The higher secondary school teachers provided their lectures using Zoom. There were hiccups in the beginning in conducting online classes and monitoring classes during the lectures.
The role of parents was also very important in motivating students to attend online classes.
Generally, educated parents were able to teach their wards the lessons we shared. But a major-ity of our students’ parents are uneducated and school drop-outs. Their wards found this season very difficult.
When our school re-opened after being closed for 15 months, we followed a careful strategy based on SOPs of the government to smoothen the transition of children getting back to school.
We had a week-long special session to moti-vate them, to bring them into classroom learning mode and to communicate.
But there is the downside to the long months of phone usage. Many students have got addicted to it. There are cases outside the classroom where girls bluff to their parents and get the phone and spend worthless time on the contents it offers. We have to find ways to get them off this addiction.

LETTERS FROM READERSLetters to the Editor must carry the complete postal address of the correspondent.
Tributes to Dr. N. Ramanl It is very rare to see doc-
tors like N. Raman nowadays: no doctor is giving holistic treatment. They keep pointing fingers. It is the middle income group that is affected.
- N. Ashok
l Raman was a doctor with divine grace. His mere touch would heal you. Complicated problems he would re-solve with some home remedy, and medi-cines which would cost less than a toffee.
- Bala
l He was our family doctor for more than 15 years. His experience and knowledge are so much that with just a touch, he could find out the problem. He always preferred to prescribe very mild medicines and ensured that his patients never got scared.
- Paddy Sundaram
l We were his patients since the early 70s. His nobility, humaneness, his way of treatment of both rich and the poor alike….made him a legend. He once said that actor M R Radha used to come to him, when he had his clinic near Gurukulam on the parallel street
- Swaminathan Kunjithapatham
l He was our family doctor for a long time. His diagnosis was accurate. He relied more on his judgement and rarely advised tests. His treatment was simple. He had the uncanny ability to put his patient at ease. Since I am a CA, he would engage in con-versation with me from economics to politics and current affairs. He hardly asked for fees - which we had to give voluntarily.
- Rama Krishnan
l A very kind and gentle doctor. In 1993, we came to know him and went to him for consult-ing and underwent his treatment. He was a family doctor to us and all our relatives and friends. He was a pious and religious person and very calm and invited his patients with a warm and
genuine smile. - Gamesh Gajaratnavelu
l Have been to him for treatment. Very gentle person with vast experience. His family will miss him just like his patients.
- Usha Sivakumar
l He was the kindest doctor I have met, and I have met a lot as a kid because I used to have weak lungs.
I used to be on heavy antibiotics as a kid and would hate going to see doctors during recovery.
He was recommended by a family friend, and since our first interaction in my 3rd / 4th standard, I would insist that we see him only because he always treated my episodes of asthma so casually that I was convinced I would be okay with the simple dose of medicines, and believe me I would.
He is the reason I stand today without being dependent on inhalers and what not.
- Archana
l My friend, philosopher and family doctor.
- Ambi Siva
l My BP would be normal only when I saw this doctor. I will miss him so much.
- Vijayalakshmi N.

This stately Dame of Higher Education overlooking the Ma-rina Beach just turned 108. On July 14, at a snappy, smart event, students, ‘old girls’ and faculty celebrated Queen Mary’s College’s foundation.
After the face lift the college was given recently, thanks to the visit of the chief minister and to the tireless efforts of the college principal, Uma Maheswari, this Home away from Home looks like a lady fresh out of the beauty parlour.
Greenery every- where, spotless grounds and tarred paths, polished tiles et al.
To many of the fac-ulty, who have spent over 25 years here and on its sprawling grounds, the fulsome birthday celebrations were organised by the staff and Old Students Association spear-headed by Eswari Ramesh and Kalpana Siva.
This was another milestone in the history of the college that had witnessed two World Wars, a tsunami and a threat of being converted into a state Secretariat.
The birthday included the unveiling of the newly polished statue of Queen Mary which now gleamed white and dignified. Indian Oil Corporation ( IOCL) which, along with Exnora has been instrumental in improving
the campus, organised a tree planting session with 108 saplings (the saplings planted a few months ago are being meticulously watered).
Kumar, General Manager, IOCL was present on this occasion.
Cake cutting, meeting up with old colleagues, friendly
banter – the air all round spread the message of positivity.
The poem in Tamil by Anisha Nilofer and the English poem composed by Dr Kasthuri impressed the guests.
QMC remembers its former principal Eugenie Pinto who got the okay for the new administrative block, Rajasulochana Elango who handled effortlessly the Jallikattu unrest as well as a cyclone and Santhi Samikannu who worked tirelessly to get all the backlog of files updated.

Garbage bins create some history. Take the story of Lazarus Church Road.
When this space grew out of groves, peo-ple flung their waste by the roadside.
Then a few cement bins, without bases, were placed at two ends of this road.
In time, they over-flowed. New metal bins replaced them. There were at least three on this road.
Then, some vanished and one got plonked at the gate of the newly-laid out park - created from OSR land by the then councillor Dha Velu, now Mylapore’s
MLA. Waste overflowed and stink greeted all those who visited the park. Con-
struction debris also got dumped here. When apartment blocks multiplied, more waste arrived. Another bin was stationed near the park gate.
The twins weren’t enough. Maids flung the waste bags into the bins, some landed
all around the bins. This became a dump.
When local residents complained hard, the bins
were shifted to the street round the bend. The families there complained hard; so the bins were moved back to the park gate. Ev-erybody put up with the mess and the stink.
Finally, some residents backed the ward councillor Amirda Varshini. With Urbaser’s help, the bins were removed and door-to-door waste collection intensified.
The local area maids were upset. They banged on the door of residents who had
complained. And continued flinging their bags of waste generated in some apartments.
One family spent some money to source potted plants and set them up where the two bins existed. In two days, one pot was knocked down, another plant lost its leaves and the
protective cover of a third was stolen. But the stink had lessened though the
‘dump’ retained its space. Now, Urbaser is tracking all the maids,
meeting families whose maids fling the waste and do not part with it at their gates - to get them to be civic-conscious.
But the last chapter of the waste bins’ story of Lazarus Church Road cannot be written now. 25 years have been covered though.

Sitalakshmi Narayanan (91), a resident of Mylapore for 37 years, passed away on June 19.
Hailing from a small village in Tirunelveli, her formal education stopped with elementary school. That didn’t stop her from continuously learning and broadening her knowledge and acquire consummate managerial skills.
Married before she became a major – at the age of 15 in the year 1946, she started young in Madurai shouldering the additional responsibility to nurture and educate the siblings of her spouse.
She moved to Mylapore in 1985 and managed the household independently till 2021, where-after she opted to live with her children.
Sitalakshmi was a multi-faceted personality with innate qualities of leadership and dynamism, her family said, She managed an extended family with hard work, frugal spending and much sacrifice, not uncommon in the 50s and 60s.
Regular visits to temples, participation in Thirupugazh bhajans, teaching Soundarya Lahari and other slokas weren’t just a pass-time but quintessential passion for her, her family said.
Sitalakshmi has extensively travelled within India. She travelled to Europe and the USA with her husband on her 50th wedding anniversary.
Her home, too small in the early days to reason-ably spacious ones later, was always filled with relatives and guests. Seldom did she miss attending a function and assuming a central role in guiding the hosts on customs and traditions.
She was orthodox since birth and by conviction
but was adaptive to accept changes over the next generations, albeit with reluctance. She recently had her 76th wedding anniversary.
Sitalakshmi is survived by her spouse L Naray-anan (96), two sons and one daughter, all residing in and around Mylapore.
Contact – sons N. Ramanathan (9840016264) & N. Krishnamoorthy (9840009770), daughter Meena Muralidharan (9487471210).- Inputs for this Tribute came from Athulya Ramanathan
The founder-director of the well-known Clarke School for the Deaf located in Mylapore, Dr. Leelavathy Patrick passed away on July 7. She resided in the school campus at 3rd Street, Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore.
She was born on May 29, 1929.Leelavathy, and founder secretary, the late
Dr. S. K. Nagarajan started The Clarke School for the Deaf, Chennai in a small way with just three students, an old hearing aid and some makeshift furniture in her residence in R. A. Puram. That was in 1970.
Over the years, with the help of experts in community development and rehabilitation services, the institution has grown from just three students to 130 students with varying disabilities, with a reputation for quality services.
Her colleagues say Dr Leelavathy did her post-graduate studies in this field in the USA; this college later honoured her with a honorary doctorate when the school completed 25 years, in recognition of the fact that she was the only woman then, in the
sub-continent to set up a school for hearing impaired and manage it for years.
She was one of the first women to start a school for special children in India. She played a key role in bringing in technology for this education, linking up with Clarke Schools in USA, a 187 year old institute. An example of the new tech - oral method instead of sign language group hearing system. She also conducted teacher training programs, tying up with a Holland institute and sending out her teachers for better exposure.
