Dear Friends,

Sheldon J. SteinPresident & CEO

Fred Wolf Chair, Foundation Board

John KellyChair, Board of Trustees

A day at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital is unlike a day anywhere else. From premature babies weighing in at less than three pounds to teenagers learning to walk again after an accident or major surgery, each child we serve is on a unique journey.

Traveling alongside them on that journey and providing the services to maximize their health and independence is what we are all about.

Over the past year, we experienced more than 40,000 outpatient visits in addition to the 750 inpatients who spent an average of 29 days each with us.

Financially, we had a good year despite the challenges we face with changes in reimbursement and pressure on Medicaid dollars.

As we embark on a strategic planning process, we consider the changing needs of the children in our community. When we got our start in 1922, rheumatic fever and polio topped the list of serious childhood illnesses. Today, we see children with autism, diabetes, feeding disorders, obesity, congenital challenges and more.

In closing, we offer our continuing gratitude to you. Your devotion to the work of Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, through your philanthropy, advocacy, dedication as a member of our staff, or as a volunteer, contributes in invaluable ways to our work with the children and families we have the pleasure of helping each and every day.

FOR MANY CHILDREN, the transition from hospital to home is the most challenging step in the healing process. At Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, kids get sophisticated medical care in an atmosphere that is family-friendly. We want them to heal, grow and go home stronger with the skills that lead to happier, more independent lives. We support families to make sure the healing never stops — even after the hospital stay.

“To have a place to play — to have a lot of visual stimulation — it really has helped and you can see her respond.”BY THE TIME Jennifer and Richard Ferrara arrived at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, they had already spent many a day riding an emotional roller coaster. You could say that by now, they were real experts at taking things one day at a time. Born premature at just 31 weeks, their daughter Siena also weighed just under 3-and-a-half pounds. Siena was born with Down syndrome and multiple life-threatening medical problems. Doctors said in order for her to undergo the surgery she needed on her heart, she would have to gain another nine pounds.

Siena, with Jennifer and Richard by her side, spent the next five months at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital’s Small Infant Program in the Center for Neonatal Transitional Care. She would have to gain the weight she needed, while striving to reach her development milestones.

The Ferraras had nothing but praise for Child Life and the Small Infant Program.

“They’ve done a lot of really special things to make us feel normal — as normal as we can in a hospital setting — having Santa come and visit … it’s helped a lot,” said Jennifer.

The Child Life Program is one of the few programs in which babies who are medically able spend about an hour a day in the infant playroom. There, Child Life specialists work with them on developmental milestones, like tummy time, sitting up and just taking in the colorful surroundings.

“To have a place to play, to let loose, to have a lot of visual stimulation— it has really helped. You can see her respond,” said Richard.

The Ferraras believe Siena wouldn’t be as far along developmentally as she is without this essential program.

“Yuba? Oh yeah, he’s the man!”DEVAN CURET had been in a serious car accident, and after spending time at University of Maryland Shock Trauma, he came to Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital for rehabilitation therapy. On the second day here, Adrienne Blizzard, a Certified Recreation Therapist and Facility Dog Handler, brought Yuba to meet him.

Yuba, a golden retriever mix from Canine Companions for Independence®, instantly made Devan feel better. He was able to play fetch with Yuba while the physical therapists worked with him and helped him to sit up on the edge of the bed for the first time since his accident.

Yuba would light up when he’d see Devan and especially loved working with him in therapy and snuggling during his stretches.

As a facility dog, Yuba’s job is to engage patients in activities to stimulate healing and recovery.

Since Yuba came to Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in 2012, he has never left Adrienne’s side — she even takes him home at night. Adrienne and Yuba have a busy schedule — they work with a patient’s therapist to help with fine and gross motor coordination, standing, range of motion, balance and mobility, learning to walk, muscle strengthening, awareness, sequencing, and many more difficult but essential tasks needed for recovery.

Yuba even works in the Small Infant Program — parents sometimes request that he be enlisted to help make their baby more accustomed to eventually being around the family dog. Yuba is a much-loved and integral member of the Mt. Washington family.

Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital 8 FY 2013 Annual Report 9

YUBA FACTSBY-THE-BONE § YOU LOOKING AT ME? All the puppies in his litter have names that start with a “Y.”

§ MAKING THE CUT: Only 4 out of 10 dogs that go through Canine Companion training and screening become service dogs. Others work in jobs such as bomb searching, Customs, or go to good homes.

§ HE’S A SCORPIO. Yuba’s birthday is Nov. 10, 2009. He likes long walks and lots of kids.

§ HE’S A CALIFORNIA BOY: All CCI dogs are born in Cali; Yuba spent his puppyhood on Long Island, NY.

§ DID SOMEONE SAY DINNER? Yuba doesn’t really have a favorite food. He loves ALL food.

Reaching out. Changing lives.Healing our Community.

Our story has always been your story, Baltimore.

Breastfeeding is Best FeedingWE ENCOURAGE AND PROMOTE breastfeeding — for as long as possible. Studies show that both mothers and babies derive great health benefits from the practice. Breast-fed infants have greater immunity and tend to require fewer hospitalizations, resulting in a lower total medical care cost compared to those who have never been breast-fed. It’s also a wonderful bonding experience for mom and her baby!

How MWPH Promotes Breastfeeding:

§ All nurses receive breastfeeding education so they have the tools to encourage mothers to breastfeed and are prepared for any questions the family may have.

§ Families receive a discharge bag with our MWPH logo.

$1,531,639

SINCE OUR EARLIEST DAYS 90 plus years ago, we’ve been reaching out, deep into the community to help, healing those in our community most fragile, most sick and most in need.

We will always keep our promise to treat all children regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

We are committed to serving the people of our community and neighborhoods who rely on us to provide leadership through high-quality health and wellness programs.

Programs like Safety Baby Showers educate new parents about injury prevention, infant back-to-sleep protocols, child passenger safety seat checks, lead poisoning and more. Our Weigh Smart® and Weigh Smart® Jr. programs address the childhood obesity epidemic, which has taken hold

of our community. Our Youth Non-Violence Initiative, which focuses on identifying violent and bullying behaviors and aims to replace them with those that foster self-esteem.

At Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, our Community Benefits Program ranks as a top priority, and with strategic guidance from our Community Needs Assessment*, we have undertaken a number of multi-year initiatives with the goal of improving the health and safety of the children and families who live in our community.
