Developing himself and the communityPAGE 7

Throughout the year, not just during Women’s Month in August, Anglo American Platinum appreciates the significant contribution women make to our operations, our host communities and at home.

Platinum is only too aware of the value added by the 6 400 women on our

workforce. They contribute to the organisation in all areas of our business, from the loco tracks and mine stopes right through to the boardroom.

Taking the lead in transformation in the mining sector, Anglo American Platinum has achieved women representation above the targets set by the Mining Charter.

About 3 900 women are in core disciplines, such as, mining, engineering processing, projects, metallurgy, technical,

safety and health; with 27% board representation.

In line with the company’s employment equity policy, women have equal opportunities through bursaries, graduate development programmes, internships, learnerships, fast-tracking in the mining and engineering fields, leadership development programmes and mentoring.

Women enjoy the same employment benefits as men and receive full consideration for their unique needs, such as personal safety and maternity benefits.

We salute our women colleagues and members of our host communities, offering

them appreciation, respect and gratitude for their dedication and commitment to enriching our company and our nation.

WOMAN AT WORK… Mogalakwena complex’s drill rig operator Beauty Tefo compares raw platinum ore to a bracelet made of the precious metal for last year’s PlatAfrica jewellery design competition. Jewellery is just one of platinum’s many uses and applications.

“The role of women in the development of the society is still key in reducing gender inequality and ending centuries of discrimination. I believe that women are not regarded as powerful as they should be in the workplace.” Tintswalo Mabunda (27), high school

teacher, Mokopane.

THE CRITICAL ROLE WOMEN PLAY IN OUR COMMUNITIES

”The month of August saw the country celebrate women and this month we get community members' opinions on the significant role women play in the workplace, at home and in the community.

“Women are often knowledgeable about the growth within their community and are in a good position to analyse how best to improve their society. I think that women in the workplace are often not competitive enough when it comes to top positions due to a lack of self-esteem.”

Gloria Shimbani (25), technician, Hans Masibe.

”“In our society

woman’s rights are still developing. Men are

still dominant in many areas of the community, but things

are changing rapidly.” Bernard Molomo (69), pensioner, Skimming,

Mapela.

“The critical role of women in advancing rural development and ensuring a generally positive society has been widely acknowledged. Women are powerful both in the workplace and the community and it is good to see a woman mayor – Andrina Matsemela – take her place in the Mogalakwena Municipality.”

Lesego Magongoa (23), student, Ga-Magongoa.

““Women should stand up for themselves both in the community and in the workplace. However, the empowerment of women today requires profound changes in the minds and hearts of the people and within the structures of the society. You empower women, you empower a nation.”

Maria Modise (55), unemployed, Seema, Mapela.

”“Women are not always regarded as equal to men and the idea that a woman belongs in the kitchen still exists.”

Mosetja Legodi (66), pensioner, Moshate, Mapela.”“We should not underestimate

the power women have – they have a significant

role in making our society a better place. They are

powerful decision-makers and they make for great

leaders.” Brian Moloto (32),

unemployed, Mokaba.

MOGALAKWENA TIMES SEPTEMBER 2016 3EDITORIAL

MAJOR MILESTONE MARKED!The signing of the Ditholwana Tša Rena Community Development Trust deed at Anglo American Platinum’s Mogalakwena complex is a significant milestone for Alchemy, the Company’s multi-billion Rand social development project.

AT THE SIGNING CEREMONY… Seated from left: Linda Yanta, independent trustee; Nkaru Mateta, independent trustee; Richard Cox, general manager, Mogalakwena complex; Chris Griffith, Anglo American Platinum chief executive officer; and Nana Magomola, chairperson, Lefa Le Rona Trust. Back from left: Lesiba Sebola, working group member; John Motimele, chairperson of the Twickenham Trust; Hilda Motumi, social performance manager, Mogalakwena complex; Laurence Kgosana, working group member; Madimetjale Tjale, working group member; Ted Muhajir, Anglo American Platinum head of social performance and founder trustee; Freddie Chaba, independent trustee; Tim Hart, SRK Consulting; Emelda Malatji, working group member; Dean Pelser, Anglo American Platinum executive head mining and safety, health and environment (SHE); and Lebang Gaobepe, senior social performance manager.

Ditholwana Tša Rena is the fourth and last trust to be registered by Platinum.

Trusts for Amandelbult complex in Thabazimbi, Twickenham Project and the Rustenburg mines were officially registered in 2014 and 2015. They were based on the recommendations of the respective community-based working groups formed for this purpose.

This event was a major milestone in the Alchemy journey of empowering communities to undertake socio-economic development initiatives through appropriate representative structures.

DEVELOPMENT“All of our development structures are now in place, led by teams of trustees and directors entrusted with positioning them as valued agents and facilitators of development in their areas of operation,” said Chris Griffith, Chief Executive Officer of Platinum, in his address at the event.

“The next milestone will

be when Alchemy beneficiary communities hold their trusts accountable and take a personal interest in playing a part in influencing decision making,” he said.

EQUAL PARTNERSIn its end state, Alchemy engages and empowers communities as equal partners, facilitating and supporting real and lasting development in communities, said Griffith.

He encouraged the Ditholwana

Tša Rena trust members to “work diligently to complete your defined establishment responsibilities as quickly as possible, learning from the other trusts, and launch the process to select community trustees as soon as the environment allows.”

RESPONSIBILITY“Ditholwana” means “platinum wealth” and the trust has a responsibility to use resources from the company to promote, support and sustain real and

lasting development in the communities surrounding Mogalakwena complex.

“I’d like to see tangible signs of the community contributions of Ditholwana Tša Rena in our

villages in months rather than years,” Griffith said. “Community members will want Ditholwana to be a household word in the area – make it so through your actions.”

The trust has a responsibility to use resources from the company to promote,

support and sustain real and lasting development in the communities

surrounding Mogalakwena complex.

“We know only too well that excellent relationships with our host communities form

the foundation of our success as a mining operation,” says Lebang. “That is why we continuously work with community leaders to find ways in which we can help them to uplift the lives of their people.”

In the time Lebang has been at the complex he has enjoyed meeting the many people he needs to interact with to familiarise himself with the issues important to the community.

“Everyone has a story to tell and all those stories have a place in the story of Mogalakwena,” he says.

Lebang’s story began in the small village of Ganyesa in North West Province. “I attended primary and secondary school in Mahikeng. I went on to get a BA Communication, an Honours in BAdmin and a Masters in Strategy at North West University. This was followed by a post-

graduate diploma in strategic social engagement at the University of Cape Town.

He joined Anglo American Platinum in 2007 as human resources coordinator housing and since then has moved around quite a bit.

In 2010 he was appointed as community engagement and development coordinator (CED) at Twickenham project in Burgersfort. Two years later, he was promoted to CED manager at the Amandelbult complex in Thabazimbi.

The following year, he was back at Twickenham as CED manager. Then in 2015, he was promoted to senior social performance manager at Mogalakwena complex.

Lebang is married to Mpho and they have been blessed with three children: one boy – Orefile and two girls – Inalentle and Oreabetse. “So Orefile and I are outnumbered really,” he says.

HEALTHCARE MADE MORE ACCESSIBLE

WELLNESS TEAM… Members of the Mabuela Clinic board and staff, from left: Hendrick Khwinana, board chairperson; Frans Magwete, groundman; Susan Lekalakala; Mavis Kgwele groundlady; Olivia Baloyi, enrolled nurse; Malesela Molokomme, Board Secretary; Edel Langa, Professional Nurse; Malesela Mabuela, former community liaison officer; Meliah Ngobeni, professional nurse; Julia Thobane, data capturer; and Frans Masenya, operational manager.

“When the Mabuela Clinic opened in 2009, it brought healthcare relief to four villages,” says Malesela Mabuela, who was community liaison officer during the planning and development of the facility.

The clinic is centrally positioned to also provide easy access to the villages

of Mabuela, Ramorulana, Mahlogo and Sepharane. It is manned by a team of 14 who serve about 800 patients a month. They provide primary healthcare, support and education, as well as home-based care.

Frans Masenya, the clinic’s operational manager says: “We are service orientated and work to ensure our patients receive the best care possible”.

The establishment of the clinic was the result of the community working together with the Municipal Integrated Development Programme to find suitable land and funding.

“Anglo American Platinum was the first company to agree to our proposal,” says Malesela. Once funding was in place the Ward Councillor approached Headl ady Mabuela who agreed to the project.

The foundations were laid in 2008,with the construction company, Infrastruct Consulting Engineers, employing 19 young men and women from the community to work on site. “It not only provided employment to these youngsters for the duration of the project, it also

saw the construction company upskilling them in trades like carpentry and painting,” says Malesela.

He adds that the community also warned the construction company about the nature of the soil before building began.

“The clinic is built on muddy soil which had to be removed to the depth of a couple of metres and replaced by more suitable material to ensure strong foundations,” he says.

When the clinic opened on 11 March 2011, it was equipped with a borehole, sanitation and electricity.

“Sanitation wasn’t part of the original spec,” says Malesela, “But Mogalakwena complex readily agreed extend the project

to include it.”Says Frans Masenya: “The

complex literally sponsored every little thing in the clinic

Alchemy has its roots in Platinum’s commitment to promoting and supporting

sustainable community development in host communities around the company’s operations in the Limpopo and North West provinces. The Alchemy vision is to empower communities for a “sustainable future, beyond mining, through mining.”

The project benefits all residents of host communities, labour-sending areas and resettled villages within a 15km radius of Platinum’s mines, irrespective of tribe, community or settlement type, ensuring development is available to all.

The Alchemy journey began in 2009 through meetings and engagements with communities, acknowledging community concerns. The result was the development of high-level principles and structures to

build a new legacy of community empowerment and self-sustainability.

Alchemy encourages everyone to become part of an economically viable environment. It helps community members to take charge of their lives, realise their dreams, create opportunities and build a thriving future together.

The development trusts (such as Ditholwana Tša Rena), established by Alchemy, strive to assist people in becoming

self-sufficient by recognising and developing their skills, abilities and potential.

Most importantly, the trusts strive to strengthen human dignity by promoting equality and respect, as well as facilitating ethical engagement. They also work to increase confidence and self-respect; provide freedom of association; ensure personal safety and freedom from fear; extending participation in civil society and minimising crime.

In a nutshell, Alchemy and its trusts provide a framework in which families can build on this

new mining legacy – working together and doing business as equals; developing basic

services like decent houses, electricity, clean water, schools and community halls.

earlier this year. It was a great day for the 298 learners and the 10 educators who previously had to make do with old dilapidated structures which did not inspire much enthusiasm for learning.

The school, which is in Rantlakana village and falls under the Mapela tribal authority, was built in 1978 by community members. Over the years, however, the buildings deteriorated and Rantlakana residents turned to the Mapela

The Mapela tribal authority took their plight to Lefa La Rona, the holding trust of Anglo American Platinum’s community empowerment initiative, Alchemy. Lefa La Rona commissioned, through the Alchemy empower-ment structures, the construction of new classrooms.

THE BIG DAYAt the handover event, Mrs Makgetha, the principal of the Botlhapa Kolobe Primary

School, thanked Mogalakwena complex and the tribal authority and conveyed the gratitude of the learners and educators. The event was attended by Kgoshi KD Langa of the Mapela Tribal Authority; Richard Cox, Mogalakwena complex general manager; Ndo Mangala, district director of the Department of Education; Tladi Manaka of Bakone Community Development and Projects; Dumi Mahlangu, operations manager of Alchemy’s Lefa la Rona Trust; and Nana Magomola, chairperson of the trust.

It’s not only the big kids at primary and secondary schools who get attention from Mogalakwena complex, but also the little pre-schoolers who also need healthy and clean educational facilities.

Learners and educators alike were surprised by a visit to Salebella Crèche in Ga-Seema

village, Mapela, recently by Mogalakwena complex’s social performance team. The team came bearing gifts, as well as spent the whole day helping to give the facility a facelift.

Members of the community cheerfully joined forces with the team to repaint the whole building, tile the floor and to ensure access to borehole water. The last being very important at the community is in a water-scarce area. In addition, the

team also donated mattresses, blankets and food parcels to the pre-schoolers.

The result was a comfortable and attractive school that the community can be proud of.

Crèche principal Onicca Selota said that she was very happy and grateful for what Mogalakwena complex had done for the crèche.

“And access to water will not only benefit the children, but also the whole community,” she added.

The dangers of early sexual activity, neglecting to use condoms and the

advantages of abstinence were brought home to the teenagers through an entertaining, interactive performance by a theatre group. It was clear the learners were paying attention as they actively participated in the show. Each of them received a gift from Anglo American Platinum at the end of the event, presented by Johannes Sithole of the Mapela Task Team.

The purpose of the five-day camp was to equip Grade 12 learners to perform better in their final examinations in mathematics, physical science, life sciences, accounting and maths literacy.

Learners were prepared for typical examination questions, common errors were highlighted and hints and suggestions offered to improve their examination-writing techniques.

All learners were asked to complete an evaluation form. Learners are asked to comment on the Winter Camps and many aspects of it including evaluating each of their facilitators and commenting on what they liked best or least on the camp. We find these comments invaluable, as they present a clear and honest learners’ perspective and would recommend Anglo see all learners’ original hand-written comments. Annexures C1 and C2 will be delivered to Mrs Suzan Lekalakala so as to see all learners’ comments on the programme. Learners, according to the evaluation sheets were extremely impressed with the academic classes. Learners were more than grateful for the Winter Camps. Learners, according to our facilitators worked hard and were inspired by the activities they engaged in during class.

the population being infected in 2015 according to Statistics South Africa. What is even more alarming is that 5.59% is made up of young people in the 15 to 24 year age group.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE“Anglo American Platinum is well positioned to make a significant difference in educating the communities within which it operates on how to prevent and fight HIV/Aids,” says Lebang Gaobepe, senior social performance manager at Mogalakwena complex.

“The most important step is to ensure that learners are empowered with knowledge.”

Johannes said he was impressed by the show and pleased that Mogalakwena complex cared about its communities.

“I would be thrilled to see the next generation of mining engineers and heads of department come from Seritarita Secondary School’s graduates,” he said and encouraged the learners to work hard at their studies.

LEARNING ON THE WAY UP

When Sema graduated from Tlakale Mashashane Secondary

School in Mashashane, Aganeng, he was focused on carving out a meaningful future.

Through its bursary scheme, Anglo American Platinum develops its own young professional like Mahlatse, who applied for a bursary and was evaluated as part of Mogalakwena complex’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP).

“I went through all of the tests, including psychometric tests, and was awarded the bursary,” he says. The programme required him to go through a year of exposure to the various disciplines that the complex offers to allow the bursary recipients to decide which area they want to choose as a career.

“The exposure was an absolute highlight for me,” Mahlatse says.

“The year bridges the gap between high school and university in terms of academics,

Anglo American Platinum has a well-established bursary scheme orientated towards the development of suitably qualified and competent people, who, upon graduating, are afforded professional career paths within the company. Mahlatse Sema, a chemical engineer graduate from Wits University, is one of the participants in Mogalakwena complex’s Graduate Development Programme.

personal accountability and maturity.”

“It prepared me for not only my studies, but assisted me in maturing enough to hold my own when I arrived at university.”

Mahlatse is currently placed at the Anglo Amercian Platinum's Amandelbult complex in Thabazimbi, working at the complex's concentrator plant for developmental reasons and to gain experience. He will be appointed to the Mogalakwena complex once he completes the programme.

“I am completing and Advanced Graduate Development Programme (AGDP),” he says. “It’s more focused than university and provides on-the-job training, as well as theoretical training, with the purpose of developing graduates into highly competent

professionals.”“I graduated from university

and felt ready to take on the world, only to realise that there is still a lot I needed to learn,“ he explains, adding that the AGDP has stepped in to provide the necessary learning curve.

“Having already progressed to metallurgical technical engineer level, I would like to complete my AGDP and a masters’ degree.”

Mahlatse says that he looks forward to returning to the Mogalakwena community.

“I believe we have a responsibility to help create opportunities for those in need because that is how a community develops,” he says. He adds that he hopes to have a chance to contribute to the development of the youth in the area.

“There is only one way a community can move forward and that is for the ones who

‘made it’ to give back a helping hand.”

Nkululeko, which means freedom in Zulu, is a financial wellness

programme designed to assist employees in understanding and managing debt. Since its launch, the programme has resulted in employees saving more than R28 million annually in debt installments.

HELPING MINERS MANAGE THEIR DEBTS

GETTING THEIR MONEY GROOVE BACK… Many Anglo American Platinum employees are finding solutions to their debt problems with the help of Platinum’s Nkululeko programme.

With its Nkululeko programme, Anglo American Platinum has saved employees more than R28 million every year since the programme’s launch in October 2014.

Garnishee orders have also been reduced by 81% from 5 877 in March 2011 to 1 088 in March 2016. Platinum’s aim is to reduce the number of garnishee orders for its employees by 50% and ensure that they are replaced with more effective and less expensive debt relief solutions which will have a direct impact

on their disposable income and well-being.

Nkululeko is one part of the Company’s commitment to investing in its employees and is conducted in partnership with Summit Financial Partners, a company that provides professional, confidential financial wellness services.

Summit consultants are stationed at operations and develop personalised debt relief programmes for each employee they consult with. To date they have consulted with about 8 000 employees across Anglo American Platinum. One of the key reasons for indebtedness in the mining industry are

garnishee and administration orders which legally compel an employer to pay an employee’s debt instalments directly from salaries.

15. Prize-Giving/Awards Ceremony Radical Mathematics and Science presented a Prize-Giving/Awards Ceremony for the first time in Mapela. Two trophies/awards per subject were presented namely:

Best Student – for student attaining the highest results in his/her subject Student of Excellence – for student who stands out amongst the others (selected by facilitators)

The learners absolutely loved attending the Prize-Giving. Certificates were handed out to learners selected.

Mrs Suzan Lekalakala (Mogalakwena Social Performance Co-Ordinator) addressing learners at Prize-Giving 16. General Impression and Evaluation Sheets
