FROM THE PRINCIPAL Lisa Morresey

Kia ora koutou 2020 Classes Although we have stated previously that students would remain with their teacher in year 8, as long as all was working well for the child, teacher and whanau, we are signalling that this will not be the case in 2020. We need to establish three new roll growth classrooms, which will require us to move a number of year 8 students into these classes. We also have a number of new staff that we have appointed to cover the six maternity leave positions and Community of Learning Leadership positions for 2020, so, there is a likelihood that your child may experience some change, either with regards to their class make up or with their class teacher. As always we will make any changes with careful consideration. Adolescent Sleepovers This may seem like common sense, but in our experience, emerging adolescents can sometimes try to pull the wool over their parents’ eyes. When students are arranging sleepovers, please ensure that you communicate directly with the parent of the child who has arranged the sleepover. Do not just take your child’s word for it. It does become a pattern for some students, particularly late in year 8. Make sure that your emerging adolescent is where they say they are. Well Done Congratulations to our Literature Quiz Team and to our Battle of The Bay’s Team, who were victorious in their respective competitions last week. We had a great day at year 8 athletics yesterday. The year 7 athletics will be held on Thursday. 2020 Stationery Once again, in partnership with Bay Office Products, we will be offering for you to be able to order your stationery packs online for 2020. We are currently arranging the setup for this and will let you know when online ordering is available, once class placements have been made. Watch this space. Mā te wā Whaea Lisa Principal

WATER POLO – NORTH ISLANDS - AUCKLAND Recently, the MMI Year 7 boys’ Water Polo Team competed in the North Island Year 7/8 Water Polo Championships, in Auckland. The boys competed hard and showed a lot of development over the three days of the competition. This was an awesome experience for the players, parents and management of the team. Well done boys, you represented yourselves and school superbly - Jake Gibson, Griffin Hunt, Finn McKinley, Cole Frazer, Cooper Everett, Vinnie Baggott, Oli Hansen, Theo Aitken (pictured below).

PCT NATIONALS Our team headed to Wellington, with the Papamoa College team, to compete against 18 other schools at the National Blue-Light Police Challenge. They had to compete against the clock in physical and mental challenges over Saturday and Sunday morning. MMI team of Alana Eru, Macey Nixon, Kahutia Tukaki and Kahn Southby won the memory challenge and went well in the PE course but were just out of the top 3 in the final placings. The team were looked after by the Blue -light ventures incorporated team, with the whole weekend’s expenses covered by them. Thanks to parent Adrian Tukaki who looked after our team and also took on the bus driver role for the big road trip to the capital.

BATTLE OF THE BAYS

Our team of 20 pupils headed down to Gisborne last Wednesday and competed in the surf carnival on the Thursday and triathlon on Friday. Surf Carnival – 1st Place The team were outstanding in taking out the surf carnival with the Y7 girls & Y8 boys unbeaten, in all 5 events, which were beach flags, beach sprint relay, swim -run relay, board - run relay and grand relay. The Y7 boys and Y8 girls weren't far behind, taking 3rd in their prospective age groups. Hugely impressed by the way the team continued to back up, event after event, in challenging conditions. Triathlon – 4th Place On the Friday the team competed in the triathlon as teams or individuals. Our teams competed well, in very tough conditions, getting out of a very chilly 350m swim to take on a head wind for the 6km in the 12km cycle, prior to a 3km run to finish. Thomas Richardson recorded the fastest time of the day placing 1st in the individual Y8 boys’ event with Vinnie Baggott 3rd in the Y7 boys. Teams results

Y7 Boys - 3rd Y7 Girls - 3rd Y8 Girls - 2nd Y8 Boys - 3rd

Overall, with our individual and team results combined, we finished 1 point behind 3rd place. Big thankyou to all the parents who made an effort to travel down and support the team and well done to the MMI team who did themselves very proud and also for the way they performed and conducted themselves with their host families.
