Veteran GroupMSUM enters the 2014 season with the most experienced team it has had under Head Coach Steve Laqua. The team returns 10 starters on offense and nine on defense

– and only two are seniors.

All-NSIC returnersThe Dragons had seven players who earned All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors a year ago, and all seven return.

That includes junior wide receiver Adam Jiskra, who was a first-team selection a year ago. Also returning for the Dragons are junior quarterback Jake Hodge (All-NSIC second team), junior running back Zayne Medhaug (All-NSIC second team), sophomore wide receiver Cory Ambrose (All-NSIC second team), junior linebacker Chris Lee (honorable mention), junior offensive lineman Troy Peterson (honorable mention) and defensive lineman Ryan Dahleen (honorable mention).

Opening actMSUM is 1-2 in season openers under Head Coach Steve Laqua. In 2011, the Dragons beat Robert Morris, 28-17. They have lost their past two openers, falling to Wayne State, 49-6 in 2012 and Augustana, 41-28 in 2013.

Record-Setting YearMSUM’s prolific offense set several records in 2013. That includes total offense in a season (5,057 yards) and first downs in a season (265). The team set single-game records for total yards (685), passing yards (472), individual passing yards (Jake Hodge, 472) and individual receiving yards (Cory Ambrose, 237). The team also set a record for the longest player from scrimmage in school history when Hodge connected with Ambrose for a 92-yard touchdown in a win over Minot State. That offense returns 10 starters plus has the healthy return of junior Preston Prince, who missed the last half of the 2013 campaign with an injury.

2014 CaptainsMSUM’s senior linebacker Lomumba Ismail and sophomore linebacker Aaron Bohl are the Dragons’ 2014 team captains.

No Place Like Home Nearly half of the Dragons’ 2014 roster is from Minnesota, as 43 players hail from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The next state is neighboring North Dakota with 18 players.

Hodge Earns Preseason Honors MSUM quarterback Jake Hodge has been named to the USA College Football Preseason All-American second team, it was announced in July. He set a single-game MSUM record with 472 passing yards against Minnesota Duluth (Oct. 12, 2013) and finished season 181-of-311 passing for 2,518 yards and 24 touchdowns. The Kasson, Minn., native also rushed for 615 yards and 11 touchdowns on 116 carries.

NSIC Division Standings - 2013 Final

The MSUM football team opens the 2014 season at Upper Iowa on Saturday.

“The beginning of a new season is always exciting,” MSUM head coach Steve Laqua said. “We’re hoping to push the tempo because we feel like we’ve had a solid summer conditioning session. That is the key to the game is pushing the tempo. I feel our team is in great shape after summer conditioning and fall camp.”

The Dragons will look to build off the momentum they built during the last half of the 2013 season which saw them go 4-2 over their final six games. Ten starters return on offense while nine return on defense, while punter Michael Schwichtenberg also returns.

MSUM will look for its second opening win during the Laqua era on Saturday.

“It’s a hungry group of guys,” Laqua said. “They’ve worked tremendously hard.”

COACHING RESUME• Steve Laqua was named Head Coach in the spring of 2011, becoming the 17th Football Coach in the 93-year history of the program. The 2014 season is his seventh year as a head coach and the fourth at the collegiate level.• Laqua has coached 13 players to the All-NSIC team in three seasons: three to the first team, four to the second, and six to honorable mention.• Coached team that set nine school records in 2013. Team won most games since 2007 season and finished third in NSIC North Division.• Laqua spent four seasons as the Shanley Deacons head coach prior to joining MSUM.

COACHING BIOSteve Laqua is entering his fourth year as the head football coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2014. The Cavalier, N.D., native has taken on the challenge of helping restore Dragon football to its past glory.

Laqua is the 17th coach in Dragon history, being named to the post in the spring of 2011. He came to the Dragons after a turning around the Fargo Shanley High School program, as its head coach for four seasons.

The 2013 season saw the Dragons make significant progress. MSUM finished third in the eight-team NSIC North Division with a 4-3 mark after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll. MSUM finished the season strong, going 4-2 in its last six games.

The Dragons had seven All-NSIC players, including sophomore wide receiver Adam Jiskra, who was first-team all-conference. Jiskra was also named to the Don Hansen Super Region 3 Second Team.

MSUM’s offense set eight school records, including most total yards in a game (685) and most passing yards in a game. The team’s offense was ranked 35th in all of Division II in total yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Jake Hodge ranked fourth in the nation for points responsible for and seventh in total offense.

MSUM also beat Mary for the first time in school history to claim the “Paddle” for the first time, and the Dragons also regained the Battle Axe for the first time since 2008 with a 35-17 win over Bemidji State.

The Dragons fielded one of the youngest teams in the NSIC -- starting as many as 11 freshmen in a game -- in 2012 and finished with a 1-10 mark, although the team had close calls against St. Cloud State and Bemidji State in games taking down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Safety Shea DeJong was named the NSIC Defensive Newcomer of the Year, while senior defensive lineman Steve Parks was named first-team All-NSIC.

In his first season, Laqua led the Dragons to a 2-9 record including an opening-day victory and a thrilling overtime win on homecoming. Four players were named to the All-Northern Sun Intercol-legiate Conference team while making a national impact. Jeff Schuette, named to the All-NSIC Second Team, was eighth in the country in tackles followed closely by Tyler Brody, named to the All-NSIC Honorable Mention Team, who was 18th.

Prior to his reign at Shanley, the Deacons had two winless seasons, and under Laqua’s guidance became North Dakota State Football Champions during his third year (2009). The team won a tight battle over Devils Lake, 31-30. In 2010, he coached the Deacons to their second state title, as the team topped Devils Lake on a field goal as time expired, 24-21. Laqua was honored as the the 2009 and 2010 North Dakota High School AA Coach of the Year.

Prior to joining the prep-ranks, Laqua served as the Running Backs, Tight Ends and Punt Team Coach at North Dakota State from January 2005-March 2007, where he coached five All-Ameri-cans including Tyler Roehl and Mike Dragosavich. While at NDSU, Laqua was one of the team’s top recruiters, as he was heavily involved in recruiting players from North Dakota, South Dakota and western Minnesota.

For the 2004 season, Laqua was the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles’ Offensive Coordinator, where he led an offense that led the NSIC in rushing yards, yards per attempt and least turnovers. During that season, he directly coached an NCAA DII All-American Frederic Rollins, who was also named a National Player of the Week during the season. The Golden Eagle offense set records for rushing yards in a season, as well as single game marks.

Laqua had a decorated career at North Dakota State as a Division II student-athlete, playing quarterback for the Bison. He was an Academic All-Conference member for three years as well as graduated with honors. He earned his Masters of Education from NDSU in 2007.

Laqua and his wife, Patty, have six children.
