This mainboard supports Intel® processor in LGA 775 package. W hen you areinstalling the CPU, make sure to install the cooler to prevent overheating. If you do nothave the CPU cooler, consult your dealer before turning on the computer.(For the latest information about CPU, please visit http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=cpuform)

Introduction to LGA 775 CPUThe surface of LGA 775 CPU.Remember to apply some ther-mal paste on it for better heatdispersion.

Important

OverheatingOverheating will seriously damage the CPU and system. Always make surethe cooling fan can work properly to protect the CPU from overheating. Makesure that you apply an even layer of thermal paste (or thermal tape) betweenthe CPU and the heatsink to enhance heat dissipation.Replaceing the CPUWhile replacing the CPU, always turn off the ATX power supply or unplug thepower supply’s power cord from the grounded outlet first to ensure the safetyof CPU.OverclockingThis mainboard is designed to support overclocking. However, please makesure your components are able to tolerate such abnormal setting, whiledoing overclocking. Any attempt to operate beyond product specifications isnot recommended. We do not guarantee the damages or risks causedby inadequate operation or beyond product specifications.

Important

1. Confirm if your CPU cooler is firmly installed before turning on your system.2. Do not touch the CPU socket pins to avoid damaging.3. The availability of the CPU land side cover depends on your CPU packing.

1. The CPU socket has a plastic capon it to protect the contact fromdamage. Before you install the CPU,always cover it to protect the socketpin.

CPU & Cooler InstallationWhen you are installing the CPU, make sure the CPU has a cooler attached onthe top to prevent overheating. Meanwhile, do not forget to apply some thermalpaste on CPU before installing the heat sink/cooler fan for better heat dispersion.Follow the steps below to install the CPU & cooler correctly. Wrong installation willcause the damage of your CPU & mainboard.

6. After confirming the CPU directionfor correct mating, put down theCPU in the socket housing frame.Be sure to grasp on the edge ofthe CPU base. Note that the align-ment keys are matched.

8. Cover the load plate onto thepackage.

7. Visually inspect if the CPU isseated well into the socket. If not,take out the CPU with pure verticalmotion and reinstall.

10. Align the holes on the mainboardwith the heatsink. Push down thecooler unti l i ts four c lips getwedged into the holes of themainboard.

12. Turn over the mainboard to con-firm that the clip-ends are cor-rectly inserted.

11. Press the four hooks down to fas-ten the cooler. Then rotate the lock-ing switch (refer to the correct di-rection marked on it) to lock thehooks.

9. Press down the load lever lightlyonto the load plate, and then se-cure the lever with the hook underretention tab.

Due to chipset limitations, to enable dual channel mode or single channel mode,installing memory modules should refer to the following table.

You can barely see the golden finger if the memory module is properly insertedin the DIMM slot.

Important

- DDR2 memory modules are not interchangeable with DDR and the DDR2standard is not backwards compatible. You should always install DDR2memory modules in the DDR2 DIMM slots.

- In Dual-Channel mode, make sure that you install memory modules of thesame type and density in different channel DIMM slots.

- To enable successful system boot-up, always insert the memory modulesinto the DIMM1 first.

- Due to the chipset resource deployment, the system density will only bedetected up to 3+GB (not full 4GB) when each DIMM is installed with a 1GBmemory module.

Installing Memory Modules1. The memory module has only one notch on the center and will only fit in the right

orientation.2. Insert the memory module vertically into the DIMM slot. Then push it in until the

golden finger on the memory module is deeply inserted in the DIMM slot. The plasticclip at each side of the DIMM slot will automatically close when the memory moduleis properly seated.

3. Manually check if the memory module has been locked in place by the DIMM slotclips at the sides.

Important

1. Maker sure that all the connectors are connected to proper ATX power sup-plies to ensure stable operation of the mainboard.

2. Power supply of 350 watts (and above) is highly recommended for systemstability.

ATX 24-Pin Power Connector: JPWR2This connector allows you to connect an ATX 24-pin power supply.To connect the ATX 24-pin power supply, make sure the plug of thepower supply is inserted in the proper orientation and the pins arealigned. Then push down the power supply firmly into the connector.You may use the 20-pin ATX power supply as you like. If you’d liketo use the 20-pin ATX power supply, please plug your power sup-ply along with pin 1 & pin 13 (refer to the image at the right hand).There is also a foolproof design on pin 11, 12, 23 & 24 to avoidwrong installation.

Mouse/ Keyboard ConnectorThe standard PS/2® mouse/ keyboard DIN connector is for a PS/2® mouse/keyboard.

Parallel PortA parallel port is a standard printer port that supports Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP)and Extended Capabilities Parallel Port (ECP) mode.

Serial PortThe serial port is a 16550A high speed communications port that sends/ receives 16bytes FIFOs. You can attach a serial mouse or other serial devices directly to theconnector.

VGA Port (Optional)The DB15-pin female connector is provided for monitor.

USB PortThe USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is for attaching USB devices such as keyboard,mouse, or other USB-compatible devices.

LAN (RJ-45) JackThe standard RJ-45 jack is for connection to single Local Area Network (LAN). Youcan connect a network cable to it.

Audio Ports (Type A)These audio connectors are used for audio devices. You can differentiate the colorof the audio jacks for different audio sound effects.

Line-In (Blue) - Line In is used for external CD player, tapeplayer or otheraudio devices. Line-Out (Green) - Line Out, is a connector for speakers or headphones. Mic (Pink) - Mic, is a connector for microphones. RS-Out (Black) - Rear-Surround Out in 4/ 5.1/ 7.1 channel mode. CS-Out (Orange) - Center/ Subwoofer Out in 5.1/ 7.1 channel mode. SS-Out (Gray) - Side-Surround Out 7.1 channel mode.

Audio Ports (Type B)These audio connectors are used for audio devices. You can differentiate the colorof the audio jacks for different audio sound effects.

Clear CMOS Jumper: JBAT1There is a CMOS RAM onboard that has a power supply from an external battery tokeep the data of system configuration. Entering Setup

Important

1. The items under each BIOS category described in this chapter are undercontinuous update for better system performance. Therefore, the descrip-tion may be slightly different from the latest BIOS and should be held forreference only.

2. Upon boot-up, the 1st line appearing after the memory count is the BIOSversion. It is usually in the format:

A7392IMS V1.0 071307 where:

1st digit refers to BIOS maker as A = AMI, W = AWARD, and P =PHOENIX.2nd - 5th digit refers to the model number.6th digit refers to the chipset as I = Intel, N = nVidia, and V = VIA.7th - 8th digit refers to the customer as MS = all standard customers.V1.0 refers to the BIOS version.071307 refers to the date this BIOS was released.

Power on the computer and the system will start POST (Power On Self Test) process.When the message below appears on the screen, press <DEL> key to enter Setup.

Press DEL to enter SETUP

If the message disappears before you respond and you still wish to enter Setup,restart the system by turning it OFF and On or pressing the RESET button. You mayalso restart the system by simultaneously pressing <Ctrl>, <Alt>, and <Delete> keys.

Getting HelpAfter entering the Setup menu, the first menu you will see is the Main Menu.

Main MenuThe main menu lists the setup functions you can make changes to. You can use thearrow keys ( ↑↓ ) to select the item. The on-line description of the highlighted setupfunction is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Sub-MenuIf you find a right pointer symbol (as shown in the rightview) appears to the left of certain fields that means asub-menu can be launched from this field. A sub-menucontains additional options for a field parameter. Youcan use arrow keys ( ↑↓ ) to highlight the f ield andpress <Enter> to call up the sub-menu. Then you can use the control keys to entervalues and move from field to field within a sub-menu. If you want to return to themain menu, just press the <Esc >.

General Help <F1>The BIOS setup program provides a General Help screen. You can call up this screenfrom any menu by simply pressing <F1>. The Help screen lists the appropriate keysto use and the possible selections for the highlighted item. Press <Esc> to exit theHelp screen.

Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T.This allows you to activate the S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis & ReportingTechnology) capability for the hard disks. S.M.A.R.T is a utility that monitors yourdisk status to predict hard disk failure. This gives you an opportunity to movedata from a hard disk that is going to fail to a safe place before the hard diskbecomes off line.

Floppy AThis item allows you to set the type of floppy drives installed. Available options: [Notinstalled], [360KB], [1.2MB], [720KB], [1.44MB], [2.88MB].

Full Screen Logo DisplayThis item enables you to show the company logo on the bootup screen. Settings are:

[Enabled] Shows a still image (logo) on the full screen at boot.[Disabled] Shows the POST messages at boot.

Quick BootingSetting the item to [Enabled] allows the system to boot within 10 seconds since it willskip some check items.

Boot Up Num-Lock LEDThis setting is to set the Num Lock status when the system is powered on. Setting to[On] will turn on the Num Lock key when the system is powered on. Setting to [Off]will allow users to use the arrow keys on the numeric keypad.

IOAPIC FunctionThis field is used to enable or disable the APIC (Advanced Programmable InterruptController). Due to compliance with PC2001 design guide, the system is able to run inAPIC mode. Enabling APIC mode will expand available IRQ resources for the system.

MPS Table VersionThis field allows you to select which MPS (Multi-Processor Specification) version tobe used for the operating system. You need to select the MPS version supported byyour operating system. To find out which version to use, consult the vendor of youroperating system.

Primary Graphic’s AdapterThis setting specifies which graphic card is your primary graphics adapter. Settingoptions are: [Internal], [PCI] and [PCI-E].

PCI Latency TimerThis item controls how long each PCI device can hold the bus before another takesover. When set to higher values, every PCI device can conduct transactions for alonger time and thus improve the effective PCI bandwidth. For better PCI performance,you should set the item to higher values.

Hyper-Threading FunctionThe processor uses Hyper-Threading technology to increase transaction ratesand reduces end-user response times. The technology treats the two coresinside the processor as two logical processors that can execute instructionssimultaneously. In this way, the system performance is highly improved. If youdisable the function, the processor wil l use only one core to execute theinstructions. Please disable this item if your operating system doesn’t support HTFunction, or unreliability and instability may occur.

Execute Bit SupportIntel's Execute Disable Bit functionality can prevent certain classes of malicious"buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system.This functionality allows the processor to classify areas in memory by whereapplication code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious wormattempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution,preventing damage or worm propagation.

ACPI Standby StateThis item specif ies the power saving modes for ACPI function. If your operatingsystem supports ACPI, such as Windows 2000/ XP , you can choose to enter theStandby mode in S1(POS) or S3(STR) fashion through the setting of this field. Set-tings are:

[S1] The S1 sleep mode is a low power state. In this state, no systemcontext is lost (CPU or chipset) and hardware maintains all systemcontext.

The information stored in memory will beused to restore the system when a “wake up” event occurs.

Suspend Time Out (Minute)If system activity is not detected for the length of time specified in this f ield, alldevices except CPU will be shut off.

Power Button FunctionThis feature sets the function of the power button (for DOS). Settings are:

[PowerOn/ Off] The power button functions as normal power offbutton.

[Suspend] When you press the power button, the computerenters the suspend/sleep mode, but if the button ispressed for more than four seconds, the computer isturned off.

Restore On AC Power LossThis item specifies whether your system will reboot after a power failure or interruptoccurs. Settings are:

[Off] Always leaves the computer in the power off state.[On] Always leaves the computer in the power on state.[Last State] Restores the system to the status before power failure or

interrupt occurred.

Wake Up Event SetupPress <Enter> and the following sub-menu appears.

Wake Up Event ByYou can turn On or Off monitoring of commonly used interrupt requests so theydo not awaken the system from, or reset activity timers for, Doze and Standbymodes. For example, if you have a modem on IRQ3, you can turn On IRQ3 as awake-up event, so an interrupt from the modem can wake up the system. Or youmay wish to turn Off IRQ12 (the PS/2) mouse as a wake-up event, so accidentallybrushing the mouse does not awaken the system.

Resume From S3 By USB DeviceThe item allows the activity of the USB device to wake up the system from S3(Suspend to RAM) sleep state.

D.O.T. ControlD.O.T. (Dynamic Overclocking Technology) is the automatic overclocking function,included in the MSITM’s newly developed CoreCellTM Technology. It is designed todetect the load balance of CPU while running programs, and to adjust the best CPUfrequency automatically. When the motherboard detects CPU is running programs, itwill speed up CPU automatically to make the program run smoothly and faster. Whenthe CPU is temporarily suspending or staying in the low load balance, it will restorethe default settings instead. Usually the Dynamic Overclocking Technology will bepowered only when users' PC need to run huge amount of data like 3D games or the

Spread SpectrumWhen the motherboard’s clock generator pulses, the extreme values (spikes) of thepulses create EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). The Spread Spectrum functionreduces the EMI generated by modulating the pulses so that the spikes of the pulsesare reduced to flatter curves. If you do not have any EMI problem, leave the setting atDisabled for optimal system stability and performance. But if you are plagued by EMI,set to Enabled for EMI reduction. Remember to disable Spread Spectrum if you areoverclocking because even a slight jitter can introduce a temporary boost in clockspeed which may just cause your overclocked processor to lock up.

1. The greater the Spread Spectrum value is, the greater the EMI is reduced,and the system will become less stable. For the most suitable SpreadSpectrum value, please consult your local EMI regulation.

2. Remember to disable Spread Spectrum if you are overclocking becauseeven a slight jitter can introduce a temporary boost in clock speed whichmay just cause your overclocked processor to lock up.

The two options on the main menu allow users to restore all of the BIOS settings tothe default Fail-Safe or Optimized values. The Optimized Defaults are the defaultvalues set by the mainboard manufacturer specifically for optimal performance of themainboard. The Fail-Safe Defaults are the default values set by the BIOS vendor forstable system performance.

When you select Load Fail-Safe Defaults, a message as below appears:

When you select this function, a message as below will appear on the screen:

Type the password, up to six characters in length, and press <Enter>. The passwordtyped now will replace any previously set password from CMOS memory. You willbe prompted to confirm the password. Retype the password and press <Enter>. Youmay also press <Esc> to abort the selection and not enter a password.To clear a set password, just press <Enter> when you are prompted to enter thepassword. A message will show up confirming the password will be disabled. Oncethe password is disabled, the system will boot and you can enter Setup withoutentering any password.When a password has been set, you will be prompted to enter it every time you tryto enter Setup. This prevents an unauthorized person from changing any part of yoursystem configuration.

DOT (Dynamic OverClocking)

Dynamic Overclocking Technology is an automatic overclocking function, included inthe MSITM’s newly developed Dual CoreCenter Technology. It is designed to detect theloading of CPU/ GPU while running programs, and to over-clock automatically. Whenthe motherboard detects that the loading of CPU is exceed the default threshold for atime, it will speed up the CPU and fan automatically to make the system run smootherand faster. When the graphics card detects that the loading of GPU is exceed thedefault threshold for a time, it will speed up the GPU, memory, fan and voltageautomatically to make the system run smoother and faster. When the CPU/ GPU istemporarily suspending or staying in low loading balance, it will restore the defaultsettings instead. Usually the Dynamic Overclocking Technology will be powered onlywhen users' PC runs huge amount of data, like 3D games or video process, and themotherboard/ graphicd card need to be boosted up to enhance the overall performance.There will be several selections when you click the DOT rate button (include increaserate and decrease rate buttons), to select the DOT level, then you have toclick the DOT button to apply the DOT function.

Use the draw bar to set the max system temperature. When the system temperatureexceeds the threshold you defined, the system will pop up a warning message andshut down the system.Use the draw bar to set the minimal fan speed. When the fan speed is lower than thethreshold you defined, the system will pop up a warning message.

Finally, you can choose the user profile by click the button in the left side and click theApply button to load the user profile.

After setting all values you need, you can change the user profile name in the boxthen click the save button to save all changes in a profile.

Multi-Stream FunctionALC888 supports an outstanding feature called Multi-Stream, which means you mayplay different audio sources simultaneously and let them output respectively from theindicated real panel or front panel. This feature is very helpful when 2 people areusing the same computer together for different purposes.

Click the button and the Mixer ToolBox menu will appear. Then check the Enableplayback multi-streaming and click OK to save the setup.

Important

You have to plug the device into the jacks on the rear and front panel firstbefore enable the multi-stream function.

Important

Before set up, please make sure the playback devices are well plugged in thejacks on the rear or front panel.

W hen you are playing the f irst audio source (for example: use W indows MediaPlayer to play DVD/VCD), the output will be played from the rear panel, which is thedefault setting.

Then you must to select the Realtek HD Audio 2nd output from the scroll listfirst, and use a different program to play the second audio source (for example: useWinamp to play MP3 files). You will find that the second audio source (MP3 music) willcome out from the Line-Out audio jack of Front Panel.

S/PDIF (optional, for HDMI graphics card only)Short for Sony/Philips Digital Interface, a standard audio file transfer format. S/PDIFallows the transfer of digital audio signals from one device to another without havingto be converted first to an analog format. Maintaining the viability of a digital signalprevents the quality of the signal from degrading when it is converted to analog.

Output Sampling Rate 44.1KHz: This is recommend while playing CD. 48KHz: This is recommended while playing DVD or Dolby. 96KHz: This is recommended while playing DVD-Audio. 192KHz: This is recommended while playing High quality Audio.

Output Source No S/PDIF out: There will no S/PDIF out. Output digital audio source: The digital audio format (such as .wav, .mp3, .midi etc) will come out through S/PDIF-Out.

MicrophoneIn this tab you may set the function of the microphone. Select the Noise Suppres-sion to remove the possible noise during recording, or select Acoustic EchoCancelltion to cancel the acoustic echo druing recording.

Acoustic Echo Cancelltion prevents playback sound from being recorded by mi-crophone together with your sound. For example, you might have chance to useVOIP function through Internet with your friends. The voice of your friend will comeout from speakers (playback). However, the voice of your friend might also berecorded into your microphone then go back to your friend through Internet. In thatcase, your friend will hear his /her own voice again. W ith AEC(Acoustic EchoCancellation) enabled at your side, your friend can enjoy the benefit with less echo.
