Rodney M. Avent was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in 1959 where he lived there until he was 12 years old. His family moved because his father was in the active Air Force and was transferred to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. Tampa is where he now considers home. SFC Avent enlisted in the Army in 1980 and retired from the Army in November 2001.

SFC Avent served his country as a Signal Soldier for his entire career. He began his career in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as most soldiers do when they attend basic training. He went from there to Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, for military occupational training and then to his first duty assignment in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He then went to Germany, Maryland, Korea, Georgia, Korea, and finished his career with the elite communications element known as Joint Communications Support Element at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. This was his most exciting job because it was a joint assignment working with the Air Force, Navy, Marines, and of course Army. As the First Sargeant, his team supported the Kosovo/Bosnia Conflict. The team's efforts and success of this highly-charged sensitive mission which held direct visibility of the President of the United States earned each of them awards for their duties during this conflict.
