We are midway through 2019, and I’m pleased at the eorts the Foundation has supported for the first half of the year. We have concluded our Mah Sing inaugural YNBC Challenge and it was nothing short of inspiring to watch Malaysians youth enhance their community and living space with their creativity and innovative ideas.

Apart from this, Mah Sing Foundation has also taken a proactive approach to support Mercy Malaysia with their Community-Based Disaster Management Programme in Penang and Kundang. This programme helps communities and first responders develop awareness and skills so they are best able to handle an impending disaster.

In addition, Mah Sing sta also took part in a number of initiatives supported by the Foundation, including World Vision’s #RunForChildren Charity Run and Suka Society’s Empowered 2 Teach donation drive. Cik Merah, our red elephant sculpture from Hospis Malaysia’s ‘Speak Up! There's an Elephant in the Room’ campaign, has returned to Southville City Sales Gallery, KL South after 6 months exhibition at Suria KLCC.

We are also excited to launch the Mah Sing Foundation Facebook page. We hope to spread awareness of the Foundation’s work and encourage more people to contribute to good and worthy causes. This greener platform will also help our stakeholders and potential stakeholders stay abreast about our activities. Follow us at www.facebook.com/mahsingfoundation/

On 5 May 2019, 50 Mah Sing sta participated in the World Vision #RunForChildren charity run in KL City Centre to raise funds for child protection interventions for children in need to help them grow and thrive in a safe environment, free from violence and harm. The participants gathered in Dataran Merdeka early in the morning and each of their runner’s bib featured a picture of a child to represent the community that World Vision serves.

Mah Sing Foundation contributed RM10,000 to World Vision Malaysia. These funds will go towards World Vision Malaysia’s Advocacy Funds, which is used for child protection interventions that ensure the well-being of children in the communities that the organisation serves in.

Mah Sing Young Nation BuildersChallenge 2019 Grand Finale The inaugural Mah Sing Young Nation Builders Challenge (YNBC) drew to a close on 22 June 2019 with team DJ Cyborg of SMK Damansara Jaya winning first place. The final event had Mah Sing Foundation Chairman, Dato’ Indera Syed Norulzaman to award the winning school and team RM6500.

YNBC is a first of its kind competition that engages second-ary school children, from 13 to 17 years of age, to reimagine living spaces in their communities with the aim of cultivating the next generation of nation builders from the Nation’s classrooms. A total of 10 teams, made up of 3 to 4 students, were encouraged to observe and empathise with challeng-es around their community and come up with sustainable solutions. The competition was built around the design thinking framework and their ideas were guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Dato’ Indera Syed Norulzaman, Mah Sing Foundation’s Chairman said, “Mah Sing YNBC is our inaugural event which was carefully planned over the course of a year. It was a pleasure to witness young minds actively recognise the issues that aect their community and identify plausible solutions and working ideas that they then implemented with the support from the Foundation. I have great hope in the future, not only of our Nation but globally, is in better hands as we witness the calibre of young empathetic minds working together to solve problems.”

First place – Team DJ Cyborg – SMK Damansara JayaTeam DJ Cyborg team found that indoor air is proven to be 2 – 5 times more polluted than outdoor air quality. This lead to the decrease in health and productivity among those who stay indoor for a long time such as oce workers. Their solution to the problem was the I-Green Wall which is a movable partition that can hang indoor plants which include auto lighting and watering system to help produce better air quality.

Second place – Team F-Link – SMJK(C) Yoke Kuan, SekinchanTeam F-Link identified that clogged drains around the local market were causing terrible smell and attracting pests. The team solution was to install drain covers and paint attractive murals to prevent people from throwing rubbish into the drains. Also, filters are installed to trap the trash from entering the drain.

Bandar Baru Kundang is located in the Kundang River Basin, an important watershed passing through several main villages around the years. In recent years, the river has experienced worsening flood events that caused massive destruction of infrastructure and properties in the area. In April 2018, the town experienced flash floods and landslides that caused major damage to roads, which aected almost 400 homes.

With support from the Foundation, Mercy Malaysia helped the local community to set up a Disaster Risk Management Community (DRMC) and the development of an action plan. As a result, the local community’s knowledge on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) concepts and practice has expanded and is prepared to handle disasters eectively and safely.

In April this year, Mah Sing Foundation supported Mercy Malaysia in rolling out their Community-Based Disaster Risk Management programme in

Penang and Kundang, Selangor.

The programme helps communities strengthen their knowledge and skills on disaster preparedness. It aims to increase a community’s capacity and

resilience, thus reducing their vulnerability to natural hazards.

Hospitals are the focal point during a disaster for patients seeking treatments, families looking for missing members and more.

Mah Sing Foundation through our partner Mercy Malaysia had conducted a Resilient Hospital Initiative workshop at Lam Wah Ee Nursing College, Penang on 28 - 29 April 2019. The two-day workshop for healthcare professionals and

first responders in Penang was to equip them with disaster preparedness awareness and skills.

The workshop was attended by over 80 representatives from the Georgetown Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Malaysian Red Crescent, St John Ambulance, the Fire and Rescue Department, and six hospitals in

Penang.

Thank you YB Dr Afif Bahardin, Penang State Exco for Agriculture, Agro-based industries, Rural Development and Health for ociating the workshop.

Most Orang Asli children do not have access to preschool education which can hinder their school readiness before primary education. This disadvantage can hold back a child’s progress at school which sadly leads to them being trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty and struggle to be self-sustainable.

To mark Hari Raya, Mah Sing Foundation organised a donation drive with Mah Sing employees for Suka Society’s Empowered 2 Teach programme which prepares indigenous children for primary school by teaching them how to read, write, speak and count. The Foundation managed to raise RM6,000 worth of stationery supplies for 10 schools to use for one year. These preschools are located in remote Orang Asli villages in Kelantan, Pahang and Perak that can take 2 hours to reach from the nearest town.

Furthermore, Mah Sing Foundation has donated RM16,800 to support one pre-school in Kelantan to help these underserved community. Chairman of Mah Sing Foundation, Dato’ Syed said, “This programme does not only provide early education for the children but the teacher is chosen from the community itself which will provide a sustainable education programme for the community”.

Dying is an inevitable part of life that we will face, but it’s often a very dicult topic to broach. What should we do when someone we know needs end-of-life care, and how do we talk about it, let alone deal with the emotional upheaval.

To shed more light on this topic, Mah Sing Foundation supported Hospis Malaysia’s initiative titled ‘Speak Up! There’s An Elephant in the Room’. The campaign’s aim was to raise awareness on the importance of having open communications about life-limiting illnesses such as cancer.

Mah Sing Foundation was one of the 10 corporate sponsors who committed RM25,000 for an elephant sculpture named Cik Merah who was on display at Suria KLCC until April 2019 to raise awareness on palliative care. Cik Merah has finally returned to the Mah Sing family and is now display at Southville City Sales Gallery, KL South.

Hospis Malaysia is a charitable organisation that provides professional community palliative care for those with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Mah Sing Foundation (MSF) donated a total of RM45,000 to two Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) in conjunction with the Tun Siti Hasmah Charity Gala for the Phantom of the Opera musical. The two beneficiaries are The Dyslexia Association of Malaysia (PDM) and Malaysian Spinal Injuries Association (MASIA), each receiving RM22,500.

MASIA's Treasurer, Mr Wong Siew Ming said, "Our association helps about 400 Malaysians who are suering from spinal cord injury with special medical equipment which is normally not available at the normal pharmacies. Our members are mostly unemployed, and many are unable to work due to injuries, thus making the purchases of this equipment a heavy burden to them. We depend largely on charitable contributions from the public and hope more will help us in supporting this cause."

PDM’s President, Pn. Sariah Amirin said, “Children with Dyslexia are often silent victims of neglect and injustice. They are actually very artistic and intelligent, but they are just not able to discern alphabets and sometimes numbers. With proper diagnostic, especially at an early age, they can assimilate back into the school system.”

For more information, please visit PDM’s website at www.dyslexiamalaysia.org and contact MASIA at 03-9080 3198.
