The Year Book ‘Project Management class of 2008/09’

My life’s journey would not have been complete without the mention of The Robert Gordon University (RGU), Aberdeen. The search of a management course that could help manage project across all sectors of life led to my coming to RGU to study MSc Project Management. I have always wanted an international experience, working with people with different background and nationality and the modern University multinational student population provided the opportunity.

Still fresh in my mind was the winter of 2008, when at end of the Contract law lecture, the lecturer Bukola Faturoti introduced me to the class to talk about the year book. Simon the ‘classrep’ was with me he gave me all the encouragement, as I shared the idea with the class expressing my enthusiasm and the need for us to have a Year book. The Class bought the idea a few suggestions were made even the lecturer gave me a copy of his own undergraduate yearbook to use as a guide and make modification. The conceived idea became a project from that moment.

The beginning of the third semester, made a whole lot of difference as the course leader Senga Briggs gave an approval for the year book to be published, for her it was a proactive move for us to organize ourselves to produce a yearbook. The encouragement overwhelmed me when the likes of Nnamdi Obienu, Seun Olaniyonu and James Awam volunteered to be in the year book committee. The committee came up with the idea of making it an outstanding yearbook different from the other yearbooks that we were use to, a marketing tool it is was called considering the nature of our course and we wanted something different that could reflect our ability for research and creativity.

It was very challenging for us, the committee toiled and worked hard to see that this Year book was produced, we displayed very impressive multi tasking skills having to cope with the pressure of course works, part time jobs and placement meetings. We also had our dissertation to write. It was a very tough time management, but we pulled through. Today we are happy that you are reading through the pages of the year book, and our efforts were not vain.

Finally, I thank God for letting me pass through this path; He made it possible for me.

Many thanks to my course mates who supported this effort, without their inputs this would not have been possible. To the Dean of Aberdeen Business School and all our lecturers, thank you for your patience and sharing your knowledge with us. Jill Howatt thanks for your support which was very instrumental. The Gatehouse Design and Print Consultancy RGU, we will forever be grateful to you guys you made it possible for the printing of our department first yearbook.

My special thanks goes to Senga Briggs for her undying support.

To my committee I enjoyed every moment of working with you guys, you were all very professional, your discipline and passion for excellence was very remarkable. Thank you so much for the team spirit.

I wish every one of us the very best in our career as project managers; remember to share your positive ideas because these ideas could shape our world for the better.

Dean’s Atricle– Professor Rita Marcella, Dean Aberdeen Business School

Celebrating the Success of Project Management within Aberdeen Business School, Robert Gordon University

As Dean of Aberdeen Business School I am delighted with the development and success of Project Management.

By way of introduction to this yearbook I thought it useful to outline the history of Aberdeen Business School, Robert Gordon University. Robert Gordon University is one of the UK’s ‘new universities’, created in 1992. However it can trace its roots to 1731, when Robert Gordon bequeathed his estate to build a residential school for boys. In 1903, The Robert Gordon’s Technical College was formed to bring together a range of adult education activities in Aberdeen. It was redesignated The Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology in 1965 and was awarded university status in 1992. It is renowned for its vocational focus and has one of the strongest graduate employment records of any UK university. Robert Gordon University has been named, for the second year running, by The Times Good University Guide 2010 as the best modern university in the UK.

The university has three Faculties: Aberdeen Business School, The Faculty of Design and Engineering and the Faculty of Health and Social Care. Aberdeen Business School is one of the leading providers of management and professional education in Scotland and is more than forty years old. The School is business facing and our strong links with industry, commerce and the public sector enable us to ensure that our courses remain practical yet innovative, and offer students the very best learning experiences available.

The Management Department of Aberdeen Business School is the host Department for the Masters in Science of Project Management. The staff of the department comprises professionals from a wide variety of disciplines including Operations Management, Quality Management, Financial Management, Supply Chain and Purchasing, Project Management and Entrepreneurship. The department has been very successful in attracting corporate income and achieved a

strong result in the very competitive Business and Management section of the Research assessment exercise.

The Masters in Project Management is accredited by the Association of Project Management (APM). The School has built on achieving its accreditation by building strong links with the APM, and hosts the Local APM Chapter Body of Knowledge presentations and events. Aberdeen Business School is now also recognized by the Project Management Institute (PMI) as a Global Registered Education Provider. Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.s) are organisations approved by PMI to offer project management training for Professional Development Units (PDU). Professional membership with PMI adds exceptional credibility and career opportunity.

One of the key opportunities for Project Management students is the six week work based placement project. The project is undertaken by small teams of students normally 2-4, working on real projects with business organisations. The placement office sources the projects from their contacts within the full range of local employers, although due to our location it is not surprising that the majority of projects are sourced within companies engaged in the oil and gas sector.

The success of the course within Aberdeen Business School is evidenced by local companies seeking bespoke Project Management training for their employees, by the robust student numbers on all the modes of delivery offered, and by ultimately by the success of our students.

It was truly remarkable that in 2009, for the second year running, a team from the Aberdeen Business School won the Association for Project Management (APM) Student Challenge, beating teams from across the UK. Also earlier this academic year a student from Robert Gordon University won the competition (between Robert Gordon University and Aberdeen University) run by the local chapter of APM for the best dissertation.

I am delighted that the 08/09 set of students have shown their ability as future project managers with this special initiative of this novel yearbook - which is a first of its kind in for the department and the Aberdeen Business School.

Project Management with Attitude– Senga Briggs, Course Co-ordinator

Four years ago Robert Gordon University determined that ONE University-wide Masters of Science in Project Management should be developed to address the need for high quality provision of project management competence identified by market research. Market research identified that organizations’ across all sectors recognized that effective project management was essential in order to ensure their continued success and stability.

The development provided a unique opportunity to offer a University-wide course designed to meet the needs of a range of discipline areas such as engineering, business, health and energy in all sectors of the economy including private, public service and the voluntary sector. Beyond the specialist areas it is equally relevant to areas like renewable energy, de-commissioning, and the nuclear industry. It is also be highly relevant to the new emerging market of project management in professional services like HR, Finance and IT which is largely being driven by government modernization and large scale outsourcing.

The Masters was the first UK Course to achieve accreditation from the Association of Project Management (APM). The University is also a Registered Educational Provider for the Project Management Institute (PMI) and is being assessed by the PMI in September for accreditation.

The Project Management Programme has grown from strength to strength since its launch in 2006 and is now one of the biggest programmes in Aberdeen Business School. Our success to date, both in terms of student numbers and corporate clients has given us a very strong base from which to stabilize and grow. It may be that the economic downturn will slow growth but we expect given the international base of both the full time and distance modes for market driven growth to continue.

The Masters provides an educational programme of fundamental and specialized project management

knowledge across a wide range of disciplines necessary for its graduates to be effective in the team and manager roles in recognized specialties of project management. The focus on team work across a diverse student population from a variety of disciplines ensures an in depth understanding of industry and cultural contexts. The addition to BSM079 of a short work placement for full time students where they work in a team either to participate in a current project or to review an aspect of a completed project strengthens and grows relationships with industry partners. Several of our students have obtained employment as a result of these placements. Such placements provide graduates with the tools and techniques needed for successful practice in the period following graduation. It is very rewarding to note that many students come from word of mouth recommendations from other students.

The Masters supports the student through the journey to becoming a project manager by ensuring that they have professional as well as academic qualifications when they leave the programme and understand the value and need for life long learning. This has been achieved by collaborating with the APM to allow students to sit the APMP exam and thus obtain a professional qualification and by ensuring that students have to start a Continuing Professional development portfolio as part of the course. Our Masters is unique - it is university wide and multi-disciplinary. The underpinning vocational focus of Robert Gordon University aligns well with the practical discipline of project management and the intellectual rigour underpinning an educational Masters of this nature. Elements which we believe have underpinned our success include: graduate employment, vocational focus; flexibility, alignment with corporate clients, improvement and not least the professionalism and commitment of our students.

Good luck to you all and keep in touch!

Class Represenatative’s Comments– Iheakaram Chidozie, Class Representative

Oh what fondness, what memories shall I remember most? Will it be the first day in class when the ten new faces got up and presented themselves as group leaders for the ‘special’ John Lewis project or will it be the John Lewis project itself? Now that project deserves a special mention as it ran us amok from September through November and I have done just that. What about the very nice Galvin? The ultimate client who leaves you more perplexed as you leave his presence after a meeting with him. So what was the project scope after that last meeting with Galvin? I shall remember it all. From the team that did us proud by winning the first prize at the APM students’ week to the lunch at the end of second semester (project termination day).

A big thank you to the tutors and the module coordinator, Senga Briggs for their support in the past year.

Big thumbs up to Ajiduah and his team for their steadfastness in seeing this yearbook through despite the enormous challenges before them, and to Senga for her role in bringing it to fruition.

If you had not turned up for the lunch, this yearbook project would not have achieved its ultimate deliverable. So a big thumbs up to you all my cohorts for your support and overwhelming presence on lunch day.

Finally guys, REMEMBER THIS IS A MASTERS CLASS.

Adios.

‘Dozie.

Your Experience in AberdeenThe most interesting part for me in Project Management are the people involved and the way to use the different skills efficient to make a project succeed. Fire fighting will always be a major part of a project manager’s job and to deal with such situations will always need special skills which can’t be taught in a lecture theatre.

What Knowledge areas of Project Management are you interested in?The most interesting part for me are the people involved and the way how to use the different skills efficient to make a project succeed. Fire fighting will always be a major part of a project

managers job and to deal with such situations will always need special skills which can’t be taught in a lecture theatre.

Where do you see Project Management as a discipline in the nearest future? It is not a new discipline, it has been used to build the pyramids which are older than 10000 years. It’s a reinvention of an old discipline with a new fancy name in a fast changing environment. In the future software will handle the organisation of the schedule and the suppliers and the project manager will be the person to blame and the first to go when things go wrong.

Professional InterestsMy professional interest is to analyse the inefficient communication between managers and engineers.

After here, what next?To get involved in a project which actually makes a change to the people on the world! There are plenty of jobs out there when you are willing to work for it. My philosophy is “ONE STEP BACKWORDS, TWO STEP FORWARDS”

Since most organisation are project-based, as challenging as it can be to manage a project, the problem is magnified when a firm or department has tens or even hundreds of project. Each project is unique and has its own risks, stakeholders, communication channels and resource requirements. Project management discipline has evolved to address the challenges of individual projects and continues to evolve to address the problems faced by project-base organizations.

As populations grow and the share of the world’s resources diminish, we can confidently expect the rate of change to accelerate. Project management will continue to be the most powerful vehicle for handling these changes in an orderly manner so project management relevance can never be over-emphasized.

Article from the Team Desk– Nnamdi Obienu & Seun Olaniyonu

Strategic Management: The essential tool

As the MSc. Project Management course for 08/09 comes to a close, it is pertinent that we get ourselves equipped for the tasks ahead, which is to steer our different (future) organisations through the process of implementing projects to achieve strategic change. Project management is all about implementing a strategy and it is important to highlight a major tool that will enable us achieve this ultimate aim.

The process of formulating and implementing strategy is regarded as strategic management. Strategic management is basically concerned with shaping the destiny of an organisation; it forms a base from which organisations take a futuristic plunge.

Within the context of management, strategic management could be regarded as the managerial decision that relates an organisation or project to its external environment, guides its internal activities and helps to define/determine its long term performances.

For project managers, the adoption of strategic management processes will ensure that projects are carried out in alignment with the strategic objectives of any organisation taking into consideration the external factors such as Political, Economical, Socio-Cultural, Technological etc and internal factors such as Working Culture, Organisational behaviour and Learning, Employee performance and attitude etc. The balance from all these factors could be derived from effective strategic management, which results in successful delivery of projects and benefits realisation for the organisations.

The essence of strategic management cannot be overemphasized, and as such it is to our advantage as project managers in the making, to strive to become strategic managers and strategic leaders to navigate our future organisations through the increasing competitive business environment into a prosperous future.
