Hopes high for best ever Wales Rally GBIn a major boost for British rallying, next week’s Wales Rally GB (13-16 November) will feature a capacity field of 160 crews for the first time since moving to the principality at the turn of the century.Building on the success of last year’s event, this year’s rally features a slightly more compact three-day route. It compromises 23 competitive special stages – totalling 191 miles – all run against the clock on a mix a traditional gravel forest tracks and fan-friendly parkland roads.

After the Opening Ceremony at Eirias Stadium in Colwyn Bay on Thursday evening, the crews face a marathon leg in mid-Wales on Friday. The weekend’s action is closer to the Deeside Service Park and includes RallyFests at Chirk Castle (see page 4) on Saturday and Kinmel Park on Sunday. The deserving winners will be crowned on Mostyn Street in Llandudno on Sunday afternoon.

Heading the entry list is the newly crowned 2014 World Champion, Sébastien Ogier. Also in action are previous Wales Rally GB winners Jarri-Matti Latvala and Mikko Hirvnben, the latter making his final appearance in the top-flight before heading into retirement.

However the greatest support is sure to be reserved for home heroes Elfyn Evans and Kris Meeke. MSA Team UK’s Evans will round off an impressive debut season with the M-Sport squad. “There’s something special about contesting your home event with a world rally car and I am really looking forward to it,” he said. “The itinerary looks fantastic – I can’t wait to get out there and I’m sure we’re going to enjoy every minute of it..

Meanwhile Northern Ireland’s Meeke, who will be gunning for a maiden victory aboard his Citroen DS3 WRC, said: “I don’t have a great deal of experience of Wales Rally GB, having only entered it once over the past eight years, but it’s always been a legendary event. My first-ever rally was actually through Dyfi Forest, so I feel at home on these stages – I can’t wait!”

Following the huge popularity of last year’s event, every effort has been made to increase car parking capacity in advance of next week’s season finale. Moreover the organisers have re-introduced a dedicated Wales Rally FM radio on 87.7FM to further enhance the spectator experience.

“The excitement is really building towards next week’s event and not just among the rally fans,” said Ben Taylor, Managing Director of Wales Rally GB. “There is a real sense that this is a world class sporting event coming to the region and everyone is looking forward to it. Wales Rally GB’s Chirk Castle RallyFest stage will be significantly improved this year to provide a better experience for rally fans next Saturday (15 November).

RallyFest stages were introduced last year for spectators wanting to experience all the excitement of the World Rally Championship (WRC) without venturing into the forests. They feature enhanced facilities and all-day entertainment for all ages.

For 2014, Chirk Castle gets a substantial increase in car parking together with a completely revised traffic management plan to help ensure that visitors can get in and out of the historic mediaeval venue with minimal fuss. Spectator viewing areas have also been significantly expanded to help everyone find a good vantage point. Toilets and catering facilities have grown in number and visitor access around the site has been improved.

The non-stop entertainment includes displays and demonstrations by supercars and historic rally cars, aerobatics by the Red Bull Matadors (weather permitting),

two giant screens showing the live action, a funfair, and some very special attractions courtesy of Hyundai Motor UK.

“Chirk is going to be amazing this year,” said Ben Taylor, Managing Director of Wales Rally GB. “It is a fabulous setting and we’ve packed a huge amount of quality entertainment into the schedule. It’s definitely one of the ‘must see’ stages of the rally.

“There were a number of things that went wrong last year. I know; I was there in the crowd and in the traffic. But we have had a proper look at everything and addressed all the areas that caused problems. The biggest issue was that 4,500 people turned up on the day and we simply weren’t geared up for them.

“This year we are much better prepared. Everything is ready and I am certain it will be a fabulous event. We just need to remind everyone that we have made it advance ticket only to give us a better idea of numbers, so please don’t try to turn up on the day without a ticket.”

WALES RALLY GBStars shine on Wales Rally GB National

The Wales Rally GB National Rally is an integral part of the overall event, featuring a huge variety of many of the UK’s top amateur crews aboard a great variety of exciting machinery.

This year’s National boasts 95 entries, including some iconic rally cars from yesteryear such as a Lancia Stratos, MG Metro 6R4 and many Escorts, plus Mitsubishi Evos and Subaru Imprezas.

One star driver returning to the stages is five-time British Rally Champion Jimmy McRae, who will be behind the wheel of an historic Vauxhall Firenza. Former England test cricketer Graeme Swann (pictured) is also trying his luck in rallying for the first time.

Home entertainment for Wales Rally GB

Both live and post-produced shows will be screened on no fewer than four different TV channels in the UK.

BT Sport will air daily highlights plus live coverage of Sunday’s concluding iRobot Brenig Power Stage. The station is also following the fortunes of cricketer Graeme Swann each evening and will complete an hour-long documentary of his exploits after the event.

ITV4 and Motors TV will both be screening daily highlights, while Welsh language station S4C’s dedicated motor sports programme Ralio will be broadcasting daily. Ralio will also be showing the Power Stage ‘as live’ later on Sunday afternoon.

iRobot to sponsor Brenig

Robotics company iRobot is sponsoring the spectacular new Brenig Stage, the climax to both Wales Rally GB and the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC).

While access to all 23 special stages is ticketed, there are several great opportunities for the public to experience the Wales Rally GB atmosphere free of charge.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Service Park in Deeside on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They will not only see all 160 cars being prepared but will also be treated to entertainment including live bands, stunt shows and on Saturday evening a fireworks display.

Entrance to the floodlit Opening Ceremony in Eirias Stadium and the Ceremonial Finish in Llandudno are free of charge, too. For those in mid Wales, Newtown offers a giant screen to watch the action and the chance to see the rally cars and stars up close in the town on Friday morning.

Marshals’ charity calendar 2015

The Marshals Charity Calendar 2015 – brainchild of Paul Sutcliffe, Oulton Park-based marshal and BRSCC North West Centre race secretary – is now available to order.

Sutcliffe has been a marshal for the last eight years but in 2008 he was diagnosed with Stage 3 Malignant Melanoma.

In partnership with photographer Andrea Pennington and Gaynor Stocker, he travelled across the UK to visit circuits, teams and drivers for 12 separate photo-shoots. The calendar costs just £10.00 (including postage) and all proceeds raised will go to Melanoma UK.

Governing body launches new website

The MSA has launched its new website to provide a better service to the sport and meet the needs of competitors and volunteers.

The www.msauk.org website has been completely redesigned by digital agency MSO.net, providing a more engaging user experience with improved content, style, layout and functionality. Importantly, the new platform will enable the MSA website to develop and change in the future as required.

Member services for licensed competitors, volunteer marshals and officials continue to work as before

but with an improved interface, while newcomers keen to find out more about the sport can benefit from a raft of improvements to the public-facing portions of the site.

These include an expanded Get Started section, with a range of information, contacts, advice and guidance on all the main types of four-wheel motor sport. News and publications are now easier to find, and there is also a dedicated Resource Centre to house the site’s many forms and documents.

“In recent years our website has been little more than an administrative tool

– and often a confusing one at that,” said Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive. “The new site has been completely overhauled; starting almost from scratch, we have evaluated what the MSA and – more importantly – the sport needs from the site and re-built it in that mould.

“We will make further improvements to our online presence and member services going forward but this is certainly a great start and a giant leap in the right direction. We are confident that motor sport’s competitors, marshals, officials, clubs and fans will agree.”

Aintree to hold 60th anniversary celebrationAintree circuit is holding a charity event on 22 November to mark its 60th anniversary, having first opened in 1954.

The evening will include a display of historic racing cars associated with Aintree along with a host of well-known drivers and motor sport personalities. It will also include a Special Tribute to Professor Sid Watkins and will be raising funds for The Walton Centre Neurosciences and Neurology NHS Foundation Trust “Home from Home” Appeal.

LHMC and BARC set to run British Rallycross

The MSA has announced that – subject to contract – British RX (Lydden Hill Motor Club) and the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) will promote the MSA British Rallycross Championship and MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix from 1 January 2015.

The move results from an Invitation to Tender (ITT) process launched by the MSA in July. British RX (LHMC) and BARC will work together on the organisation and promotion of both the championship and the standalone Grand Prix for an initial three-year period.

“Rallycross is enjoying a real surge in popularity, particularly with the success of the new FIA World Rallycross Championship and the exposure it has generated for this discipline,” said Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive.

“As such, we are delighted to entrust British RX (LHMC) and BARC with the organisation and promotion of the MSA British Rallycross Championship and Grand Prix by offering them a contract for the next three years. We are confident that by working together we will be able to create the best possible championship for everyone involved, whether competitors, teams, volunteers, venues or fans.”

2015 MSA Licenced Officials Seminars

For 2015 – with the continued support of the British Motor Sports Training Trust – the series of MSA Officials Seminars will revert to serving MSA licensed officials.These training seminars are targeted specifically at Clerks of Course and Stewards, including probationers and trainees. Their primary objective is to provide a training and learning opportunity, while enabling attendees to satisfy the seminar attendance criteria laid down in MSA Regulations for the maintenance of existing licence grades.

At seven of the venues there will be the opportunity for Kart Clerks and Stewards to meet separately later on during the day to discuss karting judicial matters.

Full-day seminars assemble at 9.30am for a prompt 10am start. New for 2015, each delegate attending will receive a £7.50 voucher towards the cost of lunch, collected at signing-on and redeemable on that day and at that venue only.

The day’s proceedings are scheduled to finish before 5pm. For Jersey and Guernsey, the Seminars will be half-day evening sessions, commencing at 7pm.

Also new for 2015, mileage allowance will be payable at the volunteer rate of 38p per mile. This allowance will only be payable for attendance at one of the attendee’s two most local venues. As always, car sharing is encouraged and the extra mileage incurred in collecting any fellow officials will also be refundable. Mileage claim forms will be available on the day for submission to the MSA after the training.

Invitation letters detailing the seminar dates and venues have been sent by email (where recorded on the MSA database) or otherwise by post to all MSA-registered Clerks and Stewards. It is important that attendees do not arrive on the day without prior notification.

New record for women racers

A record 29 female drivers contested the British Women Racing Drivers Club (BWRDC) Race for a Record, which ran during the Walter Hayes meeting at Silverstone last weekend (2 November).

Sarah Frankiln won the handicap race aboard her Renault Clio 197, ahead of Stacey Dennis (Alfa) and Caroline Gilbert (Rover Mini Cooper). Wendy Mortimer won the award for the top newcomer, while Nina Fountain was the driver of the day. The event was also supported by 84 lady marshals.

Final call for Renault/MSA AwardsYoung motor sport scribes and snappers have until 21 November to enter for the 2014 Renault MSA Young Journalists and Photographer of the Year Awards.

A panel of recognised experts from the sport and the media will consider the applications. Each winner will receive a trophy and a cheque for £1,000 at the MSA’s Night of Champions ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club in January.

In addition the winning photographer’s images will be framed and hung at both the Royal Automobile Club and Motor Sports House, and will appear in MSA magazine. The two winners will also receive a year’s free associate membership of the Guild of Motoring Writers, the world’s largest organisation of automotive editorial professionals.

Fire extinguisher installations, marking and servicingThe requirements for fire extinguishers vary according to the type of motor sport, so it is important to have a full understanding when installing any systems.

MSA regulation (K)3 deals with general fire extinguisher requirements, and (K)8 with external circuit breakers. Within (K)8 it is required that the triggering system is located on the lower part of the windscreen, preferably on the driver’s side (or on the lower main roll hoop for open cars), or below the rear window.

(K)3.2.2 requires that the exterior fire extinguisher triggering point must be mounted close to – or combined with – the exterior electrical cut-off. Some systems are mechanical; some are electrical. The images show two different installations that have been encountered at events recently; the top is an acceptable example and the bottom is not.

The external triggering point for the extinguisher and circuit breaker are adjacent and close together, with no confusion as to which is which.

While appearing to have an adjacent fire extinguisher trigger, the black ‘button’ is the screen wash jet and despite the sticker being on the outside of the car the trigger is internal only.

IAME X30 engine fiche 2015 updatesThose involved in karting are advised that there have been some updates to the IAME X30 engine fiche, applicable to both the Junior and Senior class, for 2015.

The first permits the use – with effect from 1 January 2015 – of an alternative solid clutch drum (pictured below-left), to assist in preventing unintentional lubrication of the clutch by over-spraying of chain lube, for example.

The second update concerns the carburettor, introducing an alternative throttle shutter (below-right) – again with effect from 1 January 2015 – which is now machined rather than hand finished, with the original dimensions maintained save for a minor adjustment to one of the tolerances.

2015 Cadet kart regulation changesPlease note that two changes have been made to the general Cadet class regulations (applicable to all Cadet racing) for 2015. The first concerns rear axles, which from 1 January 2015 must be fitted with circlips on each end.

The second concerns the fixing of the rear bumper, with a new restriction – also effective from 1 January 2015 – on the distance into the chassis rails that the fixing can extend. The maximum distance for the part of the fixing in contact with the chassis tube will be 100mm.

Truro & District Motor Club

Allan Dean-Lewis, MSA Director of Training and Education, visited Truro & District Motor Club’s Tregrehan Hill Climb in Cornwall to see first-hand the venue safety improvements grant-aided by the British Motor Sports Training Trust (BMSTT).

Dean-Lewis also discussed the club’s Academy initiative, which in the last year has been very successful in supporting and mentoring new Hill Climb and Clubsport competitors, and which also has the full support of Kevin Moore as the MSA’s Regional Development Officer (RDO) for the South West (see page xx).

Dean-Lewis said: “It was invigorating to see the continued enthusiasm for club motor sport in the deepest South West and the developments being planned by the Truro & DMC, in co-operation with the RDO, to sustain and grow that interest further, and to meet individual club officials and marshals. An enjoyable day’s motor sport was had by all – it was also good to see West Country Rescue providing the necessary safety cover for the event, a role that they undertake in a professional way with their two units at all events where they attend.”

Airedale and Pennine Motor Car Club Following up on a local council initiative aimed at drawing enthusiastic drivers into organised motor sport, the A&P MCC team laid out two tests on the shale surface of a local football pitch. This initial event of the six-round series was found to be just about the right format: Five rounds of two separate tests, each attempted twice with the worst score discarded, gave 20 runs for £10. This took 10 competitors two hours to complete under the floodlights and provided a fresh spectacle for everyone, including the photographer!

“Rupert North’s Mini was several seconds in front of a gaggle of Saxos and the like,” said A&P MCC’s competition secretary Neil Andrew. “Not bad for a guy who is more at home on the trials sections. The

excitement drew the attention of a passing young driver, who liked what he saw and joined the club immediately. Mission accomplished!”

Steve Johnson, Go Motorsport’s North West RDO, was delighted by the event’s success. “Neil came to an Under 17 Motor Club PCA at the Blackburn M65 services and saw how they encouraged young drivers from 14 to gain skills and have safety input,” said Johnson. “He then got the support of his motor club and local council and helped made things happen. Any motor club can have this help by contacting their RDO, whose details can be found on the MSA and Go Motorsport websites.”

Parry tests McLaren F1 carTeam UK’s Matt Parry tested a McLaren F1 car at Silverstone as part of his prize package for winning last year’s McLaren Autosport BRDC Award.

The 20-year-old Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup racer became the latest in a long line of top drivers to win the coveted award and prize test. “It was extraordinary to be sat in the car for the first time,” he said. “The speed is the biggest thing – it’s hard to describe the power, but it pulls in every gear and, even in seventh, it feels like you are in first. It’s just continuous power everywhere.”

Parry’s test took place on the day this year’s six award finalists were assessed. They include four MSA Academy members: Ben Barnicoat; Sennan Fielding; Seb Morris; and George Russell. The winner will be announced at the Autosport Awards in December.

Team UK’s King selected for FIA Institute YDEA

Team UK member and FIA Formula 3 European Championship frontrunner Jordan King will join the FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy in 2015, having won the North Eastern Europe qualifier in Holland after being nominated by the MSA.

“Each country only got to nominate one driver, so just to be chosen by the MSA was huge,” said King. “However to actually win my qualifying event and earn a place on the YDEA is incredible and an amazing opportunity that I’m determined to make the most of.

Squad MSA Team UK and Racing Steps Foundation driver Jake Dennis was a guest speaker at the latest MSA Academy Squad day, held at Silverstone’s Porsche Performance Centre.

Fresh from his FIA Formula 3 European Championship campaign, Dennis shared his experiences and advice before fielding questions from the assembled Squad drivers, drawn from racing, rallying and karting.

Cook gave a season review with accompanying driver evaluations, plus discussions around how best to use the winter off-season and prepare for the 2015.

They also led sessions on:

The new MSA Academy AASE group gathered for its third residential session at Loughborough College, where they were joined by fitness experts from Porsche Human Performance.

The training was led by PHP’s Elliot Challifour – an accredited MSA Coach – focusing on fitness education and assessments. The assessments will be repeated next year to monitor their progress over the winter.

The drivers also received a public relations presentation and a workshop exploring the principles of career planning and goal setting. They then continued their BTEC in Sport studies, supported by Loughborough tutor Jason Ramsay. The various sessions were overseen by MSA Academy Manager Greg Symes and Loughborough College’s Anna Kemp.

Performance Master ClassesCompetitors across a range of junior race and rally championships have benefitted from MSA Academy Performance Master Classes recently.Rupert Svendsen-Cook was at Brands Hatch in October to work one-on-one with MSA Formula Ford Championship and Ginetta Junior drivers. He also ran a discussion with the Formula Ford racers based on performance development over the off-season.

Two weeks later Svendsen-Cook was coaching BRDC Formula 4 competitors at Snetterton, where Adam Gould also provided anti-doping education.

Gould then joined Phil Glew at Brands for the BRSCC Ford Fiesta championship. Glew spent two days covering all aspects of driving,

from on-track techniques to human performance. Once again Gould gave an anti-doping presentation.

Gould’s next stop was Kames for Junior Rally Ecosse. A day’s coaching ended with a feedback session and more anti-doping education. Gould stayed at Kames for the following day’s Junior Rally Championship round to watch every stage and offer feedback at service.

His busy period continued with the Glyn Stages at Anglesey, again with Junior Rally Ecosse and also Junior Rally UK. The focus was on driving technique and strategy during the championships’ final round of the year.

Following on from the success of the national Go Motorsport Live! event at Silverstone last year, the AEMC joined forces with the MSA, ACU, car clubs, kart clubs and championships to showcase motor sport within the eastern region, with the support of MSV and the Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC).

Entry was free, as were passenger rides on an AutoSOLO course, which gave over 140 people their first taste of grassroots motor sport. Visitors also had the chance to experience navigating on a targa rally alongside an experienced driver. Again this was free and over 100 people took the challenge.

“There were lots of smiling faces once they had successfully navigated the course laid out on Snetterton’s 100 circuit, and many people expressed an interest in taking part in both autosolos and targa rallies in the future,” said Suze Endean, Go Motorsport’s South East RDO.

“As well as the chance to experience passenger rides, there were sprint demonstrations, karting demonstrations, car trial demonstrations, motorbike demonstrations and rescue demonstrations held during the day. There were many clubs exhibiting with everything from autocross cars to stage rally cars to 4x4s on display, as well as marshals and volunteers on hand to talk about the volunteering opportunities involved in motor sport.”

Over 800 people attended in total, with the CSCC race meeting providing the backdrop. “It was fantastic to see so many clubs, organisations and people working together and many clubs have already reported new club members joining as a result of the event,” Endean added.

Having featured various entries on these pages in recent months we are delighted to present the winning story, from Marion Sloan, aged 62-going-on-17 and a member of Wigton Motor Club

A first time for everything: Autotesting for beginnersIt all started at Rowrah Kart Track on a wet Sunday in October 2013. Oh, wouldn’t it be fun to try to kill ourselves within the confines of a concrete car park?! I said, “No” but the husband said, “Yes” and sure enough, 18 days later we became the proud owners of a 1972 MG Midget (soft top, in this weather?!).

Well, at least the thing started – as long as the clutch pedal wasn’t depressed at the same time. And the handling was apparently like a skateboard, which did nothing to dispel my reluctance to get behind the wheel.

I was eventually pressganged into a test drive and managed to squeak my way into the driving seat like a balloon. It’s only a little car but I couldn’t see over the bonnet. And no power steering – could it get any worse? Yes: No synchro on first or reverse…

Fast forward to our first autotest at Maryport, which was, after all, the whole point of the exercise.

Now, it’s not an ideal situation to set off on your first motor sport competition having previously driven your vehicle for only three miles on a minor country road but at least my expectations weren’t high. It would be freezing cold, probably wet, I would stall on the start line, I would have a senior moment and forget the test route and would, in all probability, come last.

How wrong can you be? The day was cold but dry and sunny, the organisers and other competitors were so friendly and encouraging, I didn’t stall on the start line and I wasn’t quite last – yippee! I did cause the dreaded words, “Wrong Test” to be uttered on only one occasion (which was one up on the husband, who had two – snigger!).

The whole experience has now got me hooked. The surge of adrenaline when you hurtle off from the countdown, the panic when you can’t select reverse, the gritted determination as you haul on the steering wheel with handfuls of opposite lock, the sheer relief when you stamp on everything at the finish line, knees like sewing machines. And I still took twice as long as everyone else…

It pains me to admit that, on this occasion, the husband was right about the fun factor. He came 11th out of 23 so is feeling a bit smug. He thinks I have “potential to improve” – what can I say? Next time I need to give it a bit more welly.

It was a fabulous day and I can’t flipping wait for the next one. If anyone out there fancies having a go, take it from me, it’s brilliant – but don’t forget the brown trousers…

Go Motorsport to aid STEM days at WRGB

Go Motorsport will be running an interactive motor sport themed STEM stand as a part of the Welsh Government’s initiative at next week’s Wales Rally GB.

The initiative seeks to encourage more young people to continue in their studies in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Maths and ultimately pursue careers in related sectors.

The motor sport industry provides exciting career opportunities in the STEM industries and with the World Rally Championship’s round as a backdrop, Go Motorsport will be there highlighting what the sport has to offer.

The schools and college groups will be split in two, with one team taking on the wheel change challenge while the other has to successfully complete a co-driver’s table-top navigation task, all against the clock.

The wheel change competition gives the students a basic taste of the ‘hands on’ engineering skills required in the motor sport industry. It also gives them an opportunity to look at some of the technology that a stage rally car has. Meanwhile the co-driver’s navigational challenge helps enhance map reading skills. The combined times will be displayed on the Go Motorsport leader board encouraging the teams to use their practical and theoretical skills to best effect.

“Both parts of the interactive activities not only demonstrate the huge variety of opportunities within the motor sport sector but also aim to inspire the students to become participants in the sport, especially at the grassroots,” said Jess Fack, MSA Development Manager. “Motor sport has a lot to offer and we are really looking forward to putting this message across to the 1000 students that will be visiting us over the two days and pointing them in the direction of their local clubs to get involved and also gain valuable experience for their futures.”

The Go Motorsport team will also be continuing these activities on the Saturday for the public visitors to the service park.

Volunteer recruitment at Wales Rally GB

Go Motorsport is delighted to be supporting volunteer recruitment at Wales Rally GB with a stand in the Service Park from Thursday to Saturday (13-15 November). With free public access, the team is looking forward to speaking to the visitors about volunteering opportunities. The recruitment team will have all the information needed to help interested visitors get involved in the sport and will be pointing them toward their local clubs.

GoMo winner enjoys co-driving prize

A Go Motorsport competition winner enjoyed her first co-driving experience at the Kingdom Stages Rally at Fife’s Crail Airfield.

Lauren Dryburgh won the prize – donated by Glenrothes Motor Sports Club – in a competition at the Go Motorsport stand at the MSA British Touring Car Championship’s Knockhill round in August. She sat alongside 2013 MSA Scottish Rally Championship runner-up Quintin Milne was in his Evo VI.

The pair enjoyed two successful runs, with stage times in the top-30 from an entry of 100, before mechanical issues on the third stage forced their retirement. A disappointed Milne said: “We got a puncture on the third stage and then the transfer box broke so it was game over. I was gutted for Lauren as she had put so much effort into preparing the stage maps. She was doing really well, calling every split correctly.”

Dryburgh added: “I was really nervous and didn’t want to let Quintin down, but he assured me he was just out for some fun rather than points scoring. But I really enjoyed the day and want to thank the Club and Go Motorsport for the opportunity.”

Get involved - you know you want to!

There is no getting away from the fact that competing in any branch of the sport is going to cost hard earned cash. However the level of spending varies massively across the disciplines, from the dizzy heights and high finance arenas of F1 and the WRC, all of the way down to club events where a day’s sport can be enjoyed for less than a Friday night out!

With more and more demands being made of people’s disposable income, volunteering as a marshal or official is becoming an ever more popular way of getting involved.

Somebody who has taken this route is Tigen Lillicrap. Coming from a family of competitors, Tigen decided to follow a different path to her brothers by becoming a Trainee Scrutineer, not only because she finds the cars

interesting but also because it would be good for future career opportunities. In the future she is hoping to go on to university to study physics or engineering, with a view to working in the motor sport industry.

Tigen, currently 16, has already covered many of the relevant safety aspects of competition vehicles, having had the opportunity to shadow Qualified MSA Scrutineers at Hill Climbs and Sprints. Her enthusiasm has been unanimously welcomed by those who have worked with her.

Tigen is excited to be helping at scrutineering on Wales Rally GB this year and this just shows where a volunteer role can take you in a very short time. New blood is so valuable for the healthy future of our sport and Tigen is a fabulous ambassador for the volunteering side of motor sport.

Inaugural Hillclimb Academy season hits the mark

This year has seen the birth of the Tregrehan Hillclimb Academy, hosted by Truro DMC. This initiative to encourage first time competitors into the world of Hillclimbing has not only met but exceeded all expectations, with in excess of 20 registered competitors.

The final event in the Academy calendar was held on 11-12 October and both myself and [MSA Director of Training & Education] Allan Dean-Lewis attended. The driving force behind the Academy, Andrew Dinner, competes

in a Pilbeam MP82 single-seater. He explained that the commitment and popularity for the Academy throughout 2014 was encouraging and that 2015 is expected to see an expansion of the program to include other motor clubs and venues in the South West.

Marshal and Clark at the Mull Rally

The country’s most well-travelled lion packed his bags and joined Scotland RDO Alison Clark for the Tunnock’s Mull Rally.

Marshal – of @ThanksMarshal fame – is now becoming a Mull regular, after accompanying Chief Marshal Lock Horsburgh last year and surviving the infamous McGochans hospitality.

On the Friday, he joined Radio Operator Ian Stuart for shakedown. He then had a very late night manning the passage control until 4.30am on Saturday morning in Tobermory. After a few hours’ sleep, Marshal took in the amazing scenery and spectacular rally action by helping out at the finish line of the Penmore stages on the Saturday afternoon leg.
