Safety Car document updatedThe Safety Car Roles & Responsibilities document published in July has been updated and is available at msauk.org/rallyfuture. The updated version includes:

� Clarification of the training requirements for safety car crews � Updated responsibilities for each of the safety cars, including the role of the Intermediate Safety Car and Sweeper Car

� A safety car check sheet � Updates to the closed-road safety car roles.

The new document builds upon the 2015 version, which was published in June to ensure that all UK stage rallies follow a common set of requirements.

The 2016 Stage Rally Safety Requirements, which also apply to Single Venue Stage Rallies, are updated with reference to the new MSA Rally Media Accreditation scheme, and the online MSA Marshals’ Training and Accreditation system, due to launch in January. Supplemental to the main document are annexes providing additional tools and templates for organisers.

Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “The original Stage Rally Safety Requirements, published earlier this year, represented the first basic template for running a stage rally in the UK. A lot of work has been put in behind the scenes to augment those requirements and produce what I believe is a very important document that will help to ensure the sport’s future.

“We appreciate that this adds to an already heavy workload for rally organisers, and while that may regrettably have contributed to the loss of some events, we are reassured that many others have been able to attract very strong entries this year. I wish to thank all those who have come with us on this journey so far – the sport has every reason to look ahead with optimism.”

Primarily, RallyFuture entails implementing 29 recommendations from the Motorsport Event Safety Review (MESR), which was set up by the Scottish Government following the 2014 Jim Clark Rally. The MSA committed to this implementation programme in a staged manner over approximately two years, until early 2017.

2016 MSA Unlicensed Officials Seminars and Trainers Briefings

The 2016 MSA Officials Seminars revert to being open to unlicensed officials and continue to be supported by the British Motor Sports Training Trust. The primary objective is to provide training and learning opportunities for all clubs and help them work together more closely. Additionally all Training Instructors, Lead Trainers, International Trainers and Training Coordinators are invited to attend the 2016 Trainers Briefings.Full-day seminars assemble at 9.30am for a prompt 10am start. Once again each attending delegate will receive a £7.50 lunch allowance, redeemable after the training event. The days’ proceedings are all scheduled to finish before 5pm, except for Jersey and Guernsey, where the seminars will be half-day evening sessions commencing at 7pm.

New for 2015, mileage allowance will be payable at the volunteer rate of 38p per mile. This will only be payable for attendance at one of the claiming delegate’s two most local venues. As always, car sharing is encouraged and the

extra mileage incurred in collecting any fellow officials as passengers will also be claimable. Mileage claim forms will be available on the day for submission to the MSA after the training.

MSA launches rally media accreditation schemeA robust new rally media accreditation scheme has been rolled out ready for the 2016 season, as part of the RallyFuture programme: msauk.org/assets/msarallymediaaccreditation2016.pdfOne of the recommendations of the Scottish Government’s Motorsport Event Safety review (MESR), established following the 2014 Jim Clark Rally, was that the MSA ‘introduces a more formal press accreditation scheme so that valid press credentials must be presented when signing-on. Press should be required to wear numbered tabards at an event.’

TRAININGMSA and IMS thank WRGB volunteers

If rallying is about man, machine and the elements, then Wales Rally GB 2015 had it all. Legendary stages, amazing performances and a home podium - but the story of the week was the dedication and resolve of those who battled the elements to play their part in creating an incredible rally.

The heroes of this year’s event were not just found in the cars; they were found on the stages, at the controls and in the organisational teams. More than 2,000 amazing people gave up their time to ensure that the atrocious conditions could not stop the rally or dampen the brilliant atmosphere generated by tens of thousands of fans. We cannot thank them enough for their extraordinary efforts.

This was a year when we really had to call upon the specialists within Natural Resources Wales who have played a huge part in keeping the forests and the stages accessible. We are grateful for their invaluable support and that of our ever-increasing number of partners, particularly the Welsh Government and Conwy County Borough Council. We thank all of them for being part of the success.

Finally a thank you to the competitors who thrilled us and the fans who cheered them; you have all contributed to a truly memorable event and we look forward to seeing you again at the end of October 2016.

New Clerks to receive mentoring from 2016The MSA will appoint mentors to new trainee Race and Kart Clerks from 1 January 2016 and may extend such appointments to Speed Clerks and MSA Stewards during the year. This represents a move towards continuing professional development (CPD) for Clerks of the Course.The governing body hosted the first pair of mentoring sessions at Motor Sports House and Solihull earlier this month, with 25 delegates in attendance.

The sessions were organised by MSA Race, Speed & Kart Executive Cheryl Lynch and MSA Trainer Bob Lentell, overseen by MSA Training Executive Alan Page. Assisting Lentell in creating and delivering the sessions was Jasper Gilder, whom specialises in a range of relevant skillsets.

The sessions aimed to provide a consistent approach to training, focusing on effective communication and other important skills. There was also insight into the notion of mentoring, learning styles, feedback and assessment.

Lynch said: “These were very positively received and the attendees responded well to the messages given. Everyone agrees that this is a positive step forward and a welcomed progression. I am very grateful to both Bob and Jasper for building a superb session and look forward to further development of the programme.

MSA clubs to get £0.5m rebateMSA-affiliated clubs will benefit from a significant total rebate of £575,000 on their insurance fees at the end of this year.All event-organising clubs collect ‘per capita’ insurance fees from competitors, which they then provide to the MSA to cover the costs of insurance premiums.

The MSA works hard to obtain the best possible insurance arrangements. At the same time, through risk management and by establishing a partial self-insurance scheme, the governing body aims to ensure a surplus over premiums and to make a rebate to the clubs concerned.

The MSA Board has been able to approve a rebate of approximately 30 per cent of the insurance fees to clubs at the end of the year.

Clubs do not need to apply for this, as the rebate will be paid direct to the nominated bank account details held by the MSA. Should bank details not be held for any reason, a cheque should be in your club’s hands on or after 31 December.

Internship The Motor Sports Association (MSA) – governing body of UK motor sports – has an exciting opportunity for a six-month paid internship working in the Chairman and Chief Executive’s office.

This interesting position involves working in strictest confidence and dealing with people at all levels within motor sport and also representatives of HM Government and the Royal households, for example. In addition there will be involvement in arranging hospitality at

international events, including the British Grand Prix and other motor sport World Championships.

The post offers an opportunity to apply relevant qualifications, to develop associated knowledge in a professional environment and to evaluate career opportunities in motor sport.

Duties will include – but not be limited to – the following:

� Helping to ensure the smooth running of the office of the Chairman and Chief Executive

� Arranging corporate hospitality at national and world class events

� Acting as Diary Secretary and taking responsibility for all departmental travel

� Using IT skills to develop departmental processes.

Applicants will ideally be educated to degree level and have an excellent command of the English language. Knowledge of motor sport is desirable but not essential.

New email alerts feature for proposed rule changesMembers of the motor sports community can now sign up to receive email alerts when proposed new regulations are posted on the MSA website for consultation.

Except for clarification purposes or urgent safety matters, all proposed rule changes are published for a period of consultation to enable people to have their say. However a common complaint has been that as people generally do not check the MSA website daily for new consultations, these can be missed.

Therefore anyone can now enter their email address and tick their areas of interest, for example circuit racing, karting or rallying. They will then receive an automated email informing them whenever a relevant new consultation document is uploaded.

Mel Nicholls & Loughborough Car ClubWith only nine months to go until the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, British athlete Mel Nicholls says competing in grassroots motor sports with Loughborough Car Club is a key part of her training regime.Nicholls entered club competition this year through Loughborough CC’s Disabled Driver Scholarship. She hopes to be selected once again to represent Great Britain in athletics, in the 800m wheelchair event.

“I believe an important element of all racing is in the mind,” said Nicholls. “Tactics, quick thinking, mental toughness and focus are all key in being the best. This is why I love motor sports and my days in the car (Dorcas) with Loughborough Car Club.

“I’ve always had a passion for motor sports and love being able to compete with myself (and others), driving as fast

as I can, accurately, around a course of obstacles, having to think quickly, react instantly and be focused and sharp throughout. This I believe is great mind training which I can transfer to my ‘day job’ of elite athlete and most of all it is fantastic fun!

“I can’t help but be super competitive, it’s always in me, but when I get a day away from the athletics track, it’s just the perfect tonic to get the adrenaline pumping and smiles beaming amongst like-minded, car loving, racing folk and I hope and feel there will always be a place in my life for motor sports, however crazy and busy it gets!”

Wigton Motor ClubThe Wigton Motor Club committee has agreed to donate £1,000 to the Cumbria Community Foundation to aid post-flood recovery.The club has also said it is able to support members who need storage, car transport and insurance valuations.

“Cumbria is up and running and open for business, please visit our

town, shops and hotels in the run up to Christmas,” said Wigton MC in a statement. “While some roads are still closed it is still possible to get to most places.”

The club’s programme of events will continue as normal and it looks forward to seeing members and friends at the autotest on 28 December and the awards dinner on 30 January.

Kart class homologation 2017 regulations issuedThe MSA has confirmed the regulations governing the introduction of new non-gearbox Junior and Senior kart classes for the next homologation period, running from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2019.

There are also new re-homologation regulations for all existing non-gearbox Junior and Senior classes, which must re-homologate for the same three-year period.

The General Regulations that underpin the kart class homologation process can be found in the 2016 MSA Yearbook at (U)1.2. The new Kart Class Homologation and Re-Homologation

New kart front fairing mandatory from MarchIt has been announced that the CIK-FIA’s detachable front fairing mounting kit will become mandatory in the UK from 1 March 2016, and will be provided for in the regulations from 1 January.Nigel Edwards, Chairman of the Kart Committee, said: “This will be a game changer! It isn’t just about the new front nose cone attachment; it’s about changing the mentality of the drivers. For years the sport has been blighted with contact driving and this will change that for the better.”

Sara’s Qatar AdventureThe MSA’s FIA WIMC-QMMF nominee Welsh rally driver Sara Williams flew to Qatar in November for an intensive five-day training and development programme led by Jutta Kleinschmidt, the first and only woman to win the Dakar Rally, and WRC rally winning co-driver Fabrizia Pons.

The MSA nominated Williams for the programme, which offered a chance to contest the 2016 Sealine Cross Country Rally. New Zealand’s Emma Gilmour and Lisette Bakker from the Netherlands were selected as the outright winning driver and co-driver.

Williams said: “I had a great time out there, learnt so much and met some great contacts for the future. Thank you very much to the MSA for selecting me for an amazing opportunity; it really was an honour to represent the UK.”

Michele Mouton added: “This is the first global project the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission has embarked on and we have been delighted by how our ASNs embraced it. They are all worthy winners but I must congratulate all the candidates as each and every one of them has demonstrated talent. Hopefully they will inspire other women to get up and have a go at something different.”

2016 Rotax fiche updatesPlease note that there have been a number of updates to the Rotax FR125 engine homologation fiche, which take effect from 1 January 2016. The latest version of the fiche – incorporating these updates – can be downloaded from the ‘Resource Centre: Kart Technical’ section of the MSA website at msauk.org/KartTech. Many of these updates concern the – mainly cosmetic – changes made to adopt elements of the ‘Evo’ engine. The updates are summarised briefly as follows:

Helmet standardsCompetitors are reminded that the British Standard 6658-85 Type A/FR helmet standard will be removed from the list of acceptable standards at the end of this year, as pre-warned in recent editions of the MSA Yearbook. Therefore anybody with a helmet of this standard will need to replace it with an eligible model before competing in 2016.

When reading the 2016 MSA Yearbook, competitors may notice that for the majority of the existing standards, expiry dates have now been detailed, some being as far away as 31 December 2023. Karters in particular should please note that the Snell K98 standard (pictured), will expire at the end of next year (2016).

Karting overalls Competitors are reminded that for 2016 the list of acceptable overall standards for short-circuit karting is being reduced to incorporate only the latest two standards, as noted in this year’s MSA Yearbook. These are CIK-FIA N 2001-1 and CIK-FIA N 2013-1 (both pictured). In both cases Level 1 or Level 2 suits are acceptable.

Coaches head northDuring November MSA Coaches worked with junior championships across the UK to deliver one-to-one coaching and classroom theory sessions.

James Wozencroft visited Junior Rally UK drivers at Corwen Buggy Track to discuss fitness and fatigue. James also offered techniques for analysing performance while rallying.

A few weeks later, James spent two separate days in Scotland working with Scottish Motor Sports (SMS) and SMRC Rising Stars. The classroom theory sessions at Pitlochry and Knockhill included presentations on driving technique, fitness and nutrition, sponsorship and working with the media. At Knockhill James was accompanied by SMS Development Officer Rory Bryant for the delivery.

Fellow MSA Coach Adam Gould worked with Junior Rally UK and Scotland competitors at Anglesey Circuit, providing driving feedback and answering any questions.

MSA L2 Coaching Award The latest cohort of qualified coaches completed the MSA Level 2 Certificate in Motorsport Coaching at Mercedes Benz World, Brooklands last week (25 November).

Among the graduates were Philip Ling of Buckmore Park Kart School

and Stuart Ziemelis of Ziemelis Motorsport, both of whom attended

thanks to the Association of Racing Kart Schools (ARKS).

“The Association of Racing Kart Schools Ltd has embraced and

welcomed the MSA Level 2 Coaching Course by funding one S

Grade Instructor from each member school to take part,” said an

ARKS spokesman. “So far four Instructors have passed the course

with many positive comments. We will continue to encourage all

Instructors to take part in the coaching courses, and recommend it to

kart team principals and their coaching staff.”

Tuck named RSF MSA Young Driver of the YearJunior racing driver Ben Tuck was named the RSF MSA Young Driver of the Year 2015 after a five-way shootout at iZone Driver Performance Centre, Silverstone.

The accolade is awarded each year to a member of the MSA Academy’s AASE programme, a three-year course delivered in conjunction with Loughborough College. The five finalists this year were: Tuck, 18 from Bedfordshire; Bridge Carey, 19 from Maidstone; Ryan Harper-Ellam, 18 from Brackley; Jake Taylor, 18 from Retford; and Liam Wilson, 18 from Southam.

The day consisted of seven sessions including physical and mental assessments, a simulation evaluation (including eye tracking and on board analysis), plus interviews with members of the judging panel.

The panel comprised MSA Performance Director Robert Reid, Racing Steps Foundation’s Derek Walters, Autosport’s Scott Mitchell, Loughborough College’s Anna Kemp and MSA Coach James Wozencroft. Tuck impressed the judges with his confident and precise approach and plans for future progression.

Tuck, who will receive a trophy and £1,000 at the MSA Night of Champions in January, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic experience and I’m hugely honoured to have been chosen as the winner after a tough day at iZone. Team UK visits Edinburgh for high performance workshopSome of the country’s top young drivers visited Edinburgh last week for a high-performance training workshop.

The four-day workshop included physical training sessions in Edinburgh University’s state of the art facilities, a climbing session as well as mental and theory based sessions on development, nutrition and driving theory.

The workshop covered the physical and mental elements of high-performance development supplemented by constant performance management by MSA Coaches.

Accompanied by MSA Academy Manager Greg Symes and MSA Coaches James Wozencroft and Tom Onslow-Cole, the young drivers ended their training with a practical driving session at Knockhill Circuit where they put into practice everything they’d learnt over the four days.

Clark at Crail AirfieldLast month Scotland RDO Alison Clark visited Thornton School to promote the recent Curvy Kit Kingdom Stages Rally at Crail Airfield.

Joined by local driver Drew Barker, Alison delivered three sessions to over 100 pupils. “Youngsters in the Fife area are really lucky to have so many motorsport venues on their doorstep,” said Alison. “I was really pleased to see some of the kids bring their parents along to Crail to watch the event.”

During freshers’ week at Edinburgh College in September, Alison and Scottish Motor Sports Development Officer Rory Bryant met students interested in forming a motor sports club. Some attended the Kingdom Stages Rally and were introduced to competitors and service crews, gaining tips and technical knowledge for their planned car-build project.

“Considering that the majority of the students would have been born in the mid-1990s, I was delighted to see that they were most enthused by the Mk 2 Escorts,” said Clark. “The lads finished their visit to Fife by buying a Ford Puma, which they are planning, long-term to turn into a track car, after honing their manoeuvrability skills on the Autotest circuit.”

Motor sports for all“With the present level of televised motor sports being restricted to the upper echelons of Formula One and the World Rally Championship, it is little wonder that the general public’s current perception is one of unaffordability and elitism.

“Awareness of the wide-ranging available disciplines is simply not there; the closest to ‘grassroots’ that the majority get to see is the BTCC. While this is undoubtedly entertaining, grassroots it is not!

“Historically, motor clubs have endeavoured to attract new members with the promotion of Road Rallies, Autotests and Trials events. While the value of these disciplines to our sport is obvious, the lack of knowledge outside our world does little to help sell the concept of getting involved as a competitor.

“Previously, many of the invaluable teams of marshals and organisers started out as competitors who then ‘sidestepped’ into such roles. Maybe now is the time to be selling the low cost option of volunteering as being the primary way of getting involved. With the first steps into motor sports seeming ever harder to make, surely promoting the virtues of roles such as marshalling must be easier, as it is something most people will understand and be able to relate to.

“Assuming we attract people through the volunteering route, surely a percentage will then sidestep into competing. Though a complete reversal of the traditional route of progression, this is a much more sustainable approach, with those who remain in the volunteer roles providing support for the future of successful motor clubs.

“Here is a real-life example of involvement through volunteering in the South West:

‘My initial involvement was through being the partner of an event organiser in the 1960s. However the ‘petrolhead’ element had been instilled and nurtured from an early age through sibling interest and living in the proximity of Claremont Raceway, Australia. Moving back to the UK, joining the local car club committee and taking on the role of treasurer showed a growing confidence, including some success with the purchase of a Ford Escort for Autocross. Moving around the country saw memberships of other car clubs and a progression into other disciplines such as Sprints. Moving back to my original area and motor club, the committee role of Secretary was taken and is still held to date. Having always hated ‘just going to watch’ they have always taken every opportunity to help as a marshal. Lately organisational positions have also been taken and for the future their personal remit is to ‘put something back’ and provide support for those in the sport for many years to come. The ethos has been passed to her children, with them taking volunteering roles in their lives too.’

“Last month I visited four Sunderland schools. Over 200 students got a taste of what it takes to be a rally co-driver taking part in a ‘virtual’ maths rally.“This involved the pupils calculating how much fuel their car would use

and then taking a gamble on how much to put in their car. The less they

put in, the faster the stage times, but would their car have enough fuel

to get to service? The pupils had to fill in a time card, adding times up to

make sure they arrived at the right place at the right time.

“After the classroom sessions the pupils went outside to look at a rally

car provided by two local drivers and discussed the differences between

a rally car and a road car. The sessions were booked in to be part of the

R.A.C. rally that was to have taken place in the area that weekend.

“The students did very well and the sessions showed how important

solving maths problems and mental arithmetic is to a rally co-driver. The

schools were excited about the sessions so when the rally was cancelled I

didn’t want to disappoint them. I also wanted to keep as much goodwill as

possible between the rally and the local council, who has been supportive

of the rally.”

Go Motorsport

Go Mo STEM success at WRGBGo Motorsport was part of a ‘Big Bang’ Industry Awareness STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Event at Wales Rally GB’S Deeside Service Park.

Organised by the Welsh Government and partners, it was designed to inspire and motivate students to continue studies in STEM subjects and look for careers in STEM-based industries. It featured 36 exhibitors, including colleges and engineering companies, with the likes of Airbus, Toyota and JCB on hand with interactive displays and activities that demonstrated STEM in action in Welsh Industry. Bloodhound, the supersonic car, was also on display to inspire students.

Go Motorsport ran a wheel-change challenge, which created competition between staff and students alike whilst allowing students to get hands-on with a Mini and discover more about getting involved in the sport. 150 wheel changes were completed over the weekend; one of those being MSA Chief Executive Rob Jones who had a go at the solo wheel-change challenge.

Jess Fack, MSA Development Manager, said: “The Big Bang @ Wales Rally GB event is a fantastic event for

students in Wales to engage in the science, technology, engineering and maths sectors. The Go Motorsport team had a great four days of talking to students and visitors alike, giving them the opportunity to get hands on with a competition car and learn a life skill that will be very relevant to them in the future. The challenge provided a lot of entertainment for everyone that had a go and it also opened up conversations to get involved in the sport both as a volunteer and a competitor. We very much enjoyed being a part of the event.”

Schools in Wales were invited to come and enjoy the various educational exhibits, with over 1,500 young people taking up the opportunity. They also toured the busy Wales Rally GB Service Park and the Toyota Engine Plant.
